why it's led to increased security this morning. monday was clear skies and very hot temperatures inland. yesterday we dropped 20 degrees. today it looks like we'll drop more. >> reporter: squirrel trouble in one berkeley park. the new plan by the city to control the critters and avoid a potentially hazardous situation here. "mornings on 2" starts right now. we continue to follow the fire burning in napa county this morning near pope valley. this is a live picture from newschopper2. you can see the plume of smoke there. ktvu's tara moriarty is near the command center. she just learned the fire grew overnight and it is on the move. coming up in two minutes, she'll have more on where the fire is heading now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell.

>> i'm brian flores. dave clark has the day off. let get your day started with weather and traffic. the big question, whether the weather will be playing a role in the fireworks. >> it's definitely helping. there's not a strong easterly breeze. more of a westerly or southerly. the fire creates its, though, own wind direction. a lot of that smoke is heading up towards lake county. there is a huge fog bank out there. the humidity is up. that's good. i did hear some low clouds made it. they burned off. a lot of low 50s on the temperatures. south wind at napa. that makes sense. two reports at pope valley. more of a westerly breeze or southerly breeze. gusts 32 at travis. even from sfo out to livermore, where we get more of a westerly breeze. it's a cooler direction. 50s and 60s on the temperatures. there were a couple of upper 40s. i did see calistoga at 48. a lot of cloe clouds, weak front coming in. it will be sunny, breezy and below normal temperatures. 70s and 80s for some inland.

berryessa close to 90. for many, the temperatures will come down. here's sal. right now we're looking at a commute where traffic is doing okay. we are starting off with a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. 25 to 30-minute delay as you drive through. there are no major problems. it's pretty slow at the toll plaza and the traffic is going to be busy. now, the rest of the commute doesn't look too bad. from concord to walnut creek there's slow traffic and on highway 4 coming in to conrecord from the antioch area. as we move over to 580 we've had some slow traffic especially in the altamont pass. it's filtering in. there's a new trouble spot westbound 580 and 680. watch out for slow traffic there. traffic will be busy. if you are driving to san jose, northbound 280 traffic, that looks okay getting up to highway 1. you can see it for yourself right there on the live picture. it's very clear through downtown san jose. i want to mention public transit. b.a.r.t. and caltrain no delays.

muni has slight delays. they sent out a tweet saying the roads are slick. some of the tracks are slick as well because of the drizzle in san francisco. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. new video from newschopper2 of developing news in napa county. a large wildfire in pope valley has now grown to 3200 acres. ktvu's tara moriarty is at the command center where mandatory evacuations are underway as the firefight continues this morning. >> reporter: this fire is now at 3200 acres. so it increased by 500 acres overnight. we do know that it moved northeast into lake county. the good news, the humidity did suppress it a little bit and make the wildfire not as raging as it could have been. the view from newschopper2 shows a lot of low clouds and smoke. it's very hazy out. crews have this fire at 30% containment. people from 180 homes in

berryessa estates has been evacuated. this was a very fast-moving fire. about 50 people got stuck yesterday afternoon. crews say they are safe and staying put for the moment. at least five buildings have burned to the ground. one of them, possibly a home. the rest, barns and sheds. neighbors have been helping neighbors rescuing livestock. many families ended up at two red cross shelters. >> the grass, brush and even the tries are very dry. we're experiencing conditions we could see in late summer, early fall. that's what allowed the fire to grow so quickly. >> reporter: the fire began around noon yesterday and quickly scorched hundreds of acres of wooded hillside, parched by years of drought. the bone-dry conditions and extreme heat added fuel to the fire. investigators say they won't know exactly what caused this fire just yet but we're hearing reports that some young men accidentally started it while clearing weeds are power tools. we did peek to calfire -- speak

to calfire. they are planning to send aircraft out here later. probably around 8:00. we'll keep you posted on that. live from napa county, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. the red cross has set up two evacuation centers for people who have been ordered to leave their homes. one is at middletown high school on big canyon road in lake county. the second is at pope valley elementary school. 7:05. two fires burning at the same time in san jose exposed how stretched the city's resources are for the fire season. on monday afternoon, a large grass fire threatened homes in south san jose. then another fire started about six miles away at the public golf course. according to the mercury news, 60% of the city's fire crews responded to both fires and that left only a handful of firefighters to cover any emergencies for the rest of the city. the fire captain says if they are ever in need of more help, it will call an off-duty -- call in off-duty firefighters or ask for help from other

cities. despite being a very dry winter, only one city set a record. the rain year ended yesterday. san jose marked the second driest year with 6.4 inches of rain. it was san francisco's 15th driest year with 12.35 inches of rain. oakland recorded the driest ever with 9. santa cruz set a record with 13 inches. just over a half-hour ago, the dow industrial and s&p 500 opened at their highest levels ever. right now, the dow is up again. it's up 15 points at 16,8971, still getting very close to the 17,000 mark. s&p is also up a dollar and nasdaq is up 3. now, the dow actually came within 2 points of hitting 17,000 during trading yesterday. uc berkeley finance director terence says that could spur more investors to buy because crossing that mark will grab

their attention. he says people have been focusing more on the world cup than wall street, they may decide to jump on the trend and with nothing obvious to send stocks down that could move markets even further. in an unusual move, the richmond city council passed an unbalanced budget with a deficit of about $6 million. the city manager says they hope to make up the difference overtime through new tax revenues. city officials made cuts to a variety of departments, including public works, fire and 2.3 million to the city's police department. police warn, though, this could have an impact on public safety with officers taking much longer hours, in fact, to respond to lower priority calls. the city of berkeley has come up with an unusual way to try to control the problem with squirrels. alex savidge is live in berkeley and says animal advocates are applauding the new idea.

>> reporter: well, good morning to you. instead of killing the squirrels, the city is planning to make it a crime to feed them in the parks. this is meant to deal with the large squirrel population here at cesar chavez park along the water front. this park is on top of a landfill. the critters have been burrowing holes in the dirt. that could potentially lead to a leak if they break through the cap that covers the dump. city considered exterminating the squirrels but the council backed away from the idea after a public outcry. they so decided the best way to control the critters was to stop feeding them. once this new law takes effect, anyone caught tossing food to the squirrels could face $1,000 and six months in jail. over the next few months, you

can expect new signs and brochures go up in the parks, letting people know it's against the law to feed the squirrels. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. well, the stage is now set for another tense confrontation involving the future of the as in oakland. late yesterday, the city council ordered it four members on the -- its four members on the board to reject the lease extension. that proposal would have lowered the as rent by 20%. the council will now release its own proposed lease extension tomorrow addressing its economic concerns. last week, the city council members on the coliseum board did not show up for a vote on the lease deal designed to keep the as in oakland for the next ten years. 7:09. skipping breakfast may not have a big impact on your weight loss goals after all. researchers from the university of alabama spent 16 weeks tracking 309 overweight but otherwise healthy adults and they were split into three groups. one was told to eat breakfast,

another group to skip it, and a group told not either way. many people gained a couple of pound. some loss a couple of pounds. >> i know you always have a healthy breakfast. >> yes, i sure do. a security scare at one of bay area's busiest hospitals. the discovery inside the building that's shaken up the hospital staff. to think they did this to her is just -- it's craziness. it's so gross. >> a manhunt continues for one of the suspects who broke into a home in san jose and sexually assaulted an elderly woman. the injuries police say that should help identify the man they are after. right now we're looking at the commute that's getting busier in many areas, especially east bay. as we look at the south bay, that's coming up here on 17. you can see the slow traffic here. we'll tell you more about the

in the meantime, at least 11 people were hurt. take a look at. after a food truck exploded in philadelphia. as you can see, it was caught on surveillance cameras. two women inside the truck received serious burns. the explosion happened yesterday evening as the truck was parked outside of an auto body truck. >> went by at truck just blew up and the fire hit me and i started running. >> police say it appears the explosion was caused by one of two propane tanks on the back of the truck. the tank that exploded was found about 150 feet away. about 140 undocumented immigrants, many of them unaccompanied children, are at a federal facility in san diego this morning. that's after they were blocked from reaching their intended destination in murietta, california. >> [chanting] >> three loaded buses had to turn around to mur eta and go

to a -- murrieta and go to a customs facility. the immigrants came from texas, where families have been overwhelmed by an influx of children crossing the border illegally. authorities are racing to find facilities to accommodate them. but protesters say they do not want them in murrieta. >> we have to get a handle on immigration and stop giving them a reason to come over. >> we're the ones who build your homes! we're do your plumbing! >> what's next is unclear. official says they were told to expect 40 immigrants every three days. the next group is scheduled to arrive on friday, the 4th of july. we have new information about a home-invasion robbery in san jose, where an 85-year- old woman was the victim of sexual assault. police say two suspects broke into the home of the woman and her husband early yesterday morning. we now know they were armed with a knife which was used to force the couple to the back of

their home. >> right now, i'm feeling so disgusted with the people that did this. so sweet. >> the two suspects stole the couple's car and were later spotted by police. after a short chase, they crashed into a vacant home. the 15-year-old pinned in the passenger seat was arrested. police are looking for the driver who is described as latino between the ages of 17 and 25 with a possible severe cut from that car crash. police are hoping to get more information to put together a sketch. 7:16. the federal government is suing t-mobile for a practice known as cramming. the federal trade commission says t-mobile charged customers for premium services, including special ring tones and horoscope subscriptions they never authorized. one customer found one of those $10 charges on page 123 of his bill. consumer advocates say lengthy bills make it easy for t-mobile to hide charges from customers. >> it looks to us like t-mobile

was trying to get away with a fast one to rip off its customers and that's just not right. >> t-mobile says it has already stopped billing for the text services and it says it is reaching out to customers to let them know how to get refunds. there's more opposition to the golden gate national recreation area's proposed dog restrictions. the san mateo county board of supervisors voted to send a letter to the ggnra opposing the lan that would bar offleash dog walking in four coastal counties. the agency maintains it must atom date various -- accommodate various types of visitors, not just dog owners. a neighborhood is on hey leart after a mountain lion killed a deer. it happened on ferndale street near hillsdale boulevard. residents say they heard noises coming from their backyard. and when they went outside, they saw the mountain lion

attacking the deer. officials are warning people to be extra careful in wooded areas and not to feed deer which have trapped mountain lions. :17. want to check in -- 7:17. want to check in with sal. i would imagine traffic would start to get lighter each day as we approach july 4th. >> that's right. mort people take time off surrounding the 4th of july. might as well take thursday off, right? that's what some people think. we'll get lucky with our commute. right now, it's still slow at the bay bridge toll plaza. 25 to 30-minute drive time getting into san francisco. we're also looking at the east bay commute and traffic on 880 northbound and southbound is moderate. this commute usually doesn't start getting busy until after 8:00 to the trip for downtown oakland. i want to mention 580 has been the biggest problem coming up from the tracy triangle into livermore and dublin. most of that slow traffic is in dublin. getting word of a crash near the freeway but not on it on stone million road at 680, word of a car and a bicyclist got involved in the crash.

contra costa sheriff's authority is arriving on the scene. the chp is also on the way. 7:18. let's go to steve. a lot of low clouds and fog in place. helped along by a weak cold front. that's all it takes this time of year. boy did that charge into the fog bank. a lot of low clouds making a push inland. some areas don't always get the fog. low overcast. it will be cooler and breezy. today is the coolest day. we'll start to see inland temperatures warmer with the fog getting squashed. next couple of days look to be hoe rum. starting off 56 -- ho-hum. starting off 56 in san francisco. the record high, 92, 1970 and 48 back in 1800. the low cloud deck continues to get enhanced by the weak system coming in that has produced a few reports of drizzle, sausalito to the san mateo

coast. a robust, definitely a fresh breeze out to the delta. been out there all morning long. it's west or southwest or southerly. some of that southerly direction is making it up to napa county. sfo is in there, redwood city, livermore now, these are gown, 5, 20 -- down, 15, 20 degrees. calistoga bottomed out at 48. lakeport, 68. a lot of that smoke heading into lake county as well. anguin at 50. i think monday they were 7 a. thunderstorms erupting over us. 58 ukiah. that's a cooldown. sacramento, 58. the monterey probably stuck at 57. you can see all of the gray there. it's getting enhanced. low cloud deck. you can call it fog. breezy to windiy. patchy drizzle will take us through today and temperatures will be below average.

low clouds have moved rather far inland, below normal temperatures, especially out to the east bay. the fog forecast looks like the fog will be burning off sooner. the only question will be friday night. i think it will be the document. today it's maxed out. 62 sausalito to novato, 79. sonoma 79. 92 clearlake. 81 concord. 88 in antioch. brentwood to oakley. livermore 83. oakland, san leandro and hayward at 70. 78 santa clara. san jose, 79. too much fog for santa cruz, upper 70s there. 50s, 60s on the coast. 70s redwood city, pal -- palo alto. it will be warmerrer inland on the -- warmer inland over the weekend. if you signed up for the new healthcare under covered california, there's a good chance there might be a problem with your application.

prosecutors in los angeles have decided not to charge 49ers linebacker aldon smith for reportedly making a bomb threat at l.a.x. but their investigation is not over yet. this is cell phone video of the incident in april. tmz reports smith will be summoned to the los angeles district attorney's office later this month for a closed- door meeting. prosecutors will try to learn more about the incident involving an airport security agent that led to his arrest. later this month, smith will be sentenced on felony gun charges in an unrelated case in san jose. well, san francisco police have broken up an illegal fireworks operation just before the 4th of july. undercover officers say 18-year- old eric yang was running the

operation out of a cafe on grant street in chinatown. he had a 15-year-old boy retrieve the fireworks from a storage space. police say they confiscated about 100 illegal fireworks that were being told for $10 apiece. >> we're talking about a destructive device, whether it's called an m-1,000 or m-80. it's a small desist. you can lose a -- device. you can lose a hand or arm. it's very dangerous. >> prosecutors are charging the 18-year-old with felony possession of explosives and child endangerment. first it was oakland mayor quan's fender-bender now ed lee is making news on the road. today's chronicle is publishing these photos of him pulling up to devil's, a baking company. one photo shows the mayor's chevy double parked. another shows the same car apparently blocking the intersection. so far, there's been no response from the mayor's

office. 7:25. an early-morning fire destroys a home in oakland. why a bad situation could have been a whole lot worse. >> reporter: a disturbing discovery inside a bay area hospital. why it's led to increased security this morning. highway 24 we're looking at that and figuring out how long it will take to you get to the tunnel. so far it looks pretty good. monday was the hottest day. this is looking like the coolest day of the week. that didn't take long. there is a lot of fog. we'll take a look at the forecast highs today and a little warmup due for the weekend? it sure looks like it. we'll have more on that coming up.

7:29. we continue to follow the fire burning in napa county. these are live pictures right now of some of the smoke. this is where firefighters worked through the night to battle a fire that has rapidly spread. hundreds of homes have been evacuated. again, as the camera zooms in here, you can see some of the flames there in the woods and an awful lot of smoke as well. ktvu actually has a crew near the command is center. we're told the fire crew grit. it's on the move. coming up in about two minutes we'll tell you where the fire is heading now. good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning.

everybody. i'm brian flores. dave clark has the day off. let's get you out the door on this beautiful wednesday. steve has your forecast. >> we do, indeed. first of all, a couple of updates. there are two observations at pope valley. the humidity was up there. now it's 70, 80. the temperature is 55. the smoke is heading northward towards lake county had a report of a lot of smoke and haze up there as well. the fog is big. really helped along by a weak cold front but this time of year that's good enough to do it. a couple of reports of drizzle. sausalito, daly city, westlake i know on the san mateo coast as well around half moon bay. 50s on the temperatures. very, very low 60s. livermore at 60. some of the higher elevations have cooled out out of the upper 70s or 80s. 59 san jose state. 58 in saratoga, even gilroy is at 57 degrees. had upper 40s around calistoga. plenty of low clouds and fog. we'll keep a cool forecast. i think this is the coolest day

of the week. we'll gradually warm it up. below normal temperatures. 80s inland. 50s, 60s, 70s by the water. here's sal. we're looking at a commute where traffic is busier than it was a few moments ago. but also seeing some things get better. highway 24, just a slight more slow traffic here between pleasant hill road and the caldecott. but still a green light here, nine minutes an average speed, just a little bit above 60 miles an hour. not too bad, especially for a weatd. i think we're beginning to see the 4th of july effect as people are taking time off surrounding the holiday. let's move along to the bay bridge toll plaza where yao can see traffic -- where you can see traffic is backed up. it wouldn't surprise me to say this commute is improving in the next hour. traffic is okay in the karl pool lanes -- carpool lanes. westbound 580 is busy. most of the slow traffic on 580

coming up to the 680 interchange and in livermore getting to dublin. and in san jose, 101 traffic looks pretty good. looks better than it normally does. had a tip about slow traffic in palo alto. could not find an accident associated with that. we're still watching. the chp doesn't have anything reported just now. back to the desk. all right. thank you, sal. again, live pictures of developing news in napa county. this is a large wildfire that's bumping in pope valley northwest of lake berryessa. it started yesterday afternoon and this morning it grew from 2700 acres. it's now at 3200 acres. it is 30% contained. mandatory evacuations are in place for people who live in the berryessa estates. people on snell valley road to the lake county line are being told to leave their homes. the red cross has set up two evacuation centers. one is at middletown high school on big canyon road in

lake county. the second is at pope valley elementary school. we'll continue to follow the story throughout the day here on ktvu. there's extra security at washington hospital in fremont this morning following a disturbing discovery. bomb parts were found inside the hospital building. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live from fremont with reaction from the hospital staff and also patients. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. we just spoke to a patient leaving the hospital on mowry. she said she was not told by staff about the security threat. she found out by watching our newscast in her hospital room. the security notice, this was just e-mailed to all of the hospital staff, making them aware that components of an explosive device were found here. now, there is heightened security at the hospital and according to the notice, it states there have been recent security-related incidents, which included the discovery of the component of a bomb found at the main hospital.

local law enforcement and the fbi examined the parts and determined it to be the makings of an explosive device. the notice says effective immediately, washington hospital is on high security alert which means anyone entering a hospital building is subject to increased security screenings, including the inspection of personal belongings. >> it was a little scary. they came out and told us everything was fine, that we were safe and not to worry. >> reporter: did you notice any difference in how security was handled at the hospital? >> no, just a lot of staff coming in and out, checking things, looking around. a lot of activity. >> reporter: is that normal? >> i don't think so. >> reporter: well, hospital staff we talked to this morning say they were somewhat nervous upon hearing about the incident, but they are going to focus on patient care. the hospital says anyone entering including physicians, employees, volunteers, visitors, patients and vendors

must wear hospital-issued identification that is visible. if they are not, they will be stopped and escorted to the lobby. they urge anyone who sees anything suspicious to alert security. we're still waiting to hear back from a hospital spokesperson and law enforcement to get more details on this case. reporting live from fremont, jag, ktvu channel 2 news -- janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. fire investigators in oakland are trying to determine the cause of a destructive house fire. this was the scene moments after the fire started around 1:30 this morning at the home on el pass yodrive near 105th avenue. no one was home at the time. firefighters say the intense fast-moving flames gutted the home and forced the evacuation of the hours next door. 7:35. hayward police will start to use small body-mounted video cameras to record encounters with the public before the end of the year.

they approved buying the cameras. the city attorney says that could help cut claims of officers using excessive violence as much as 50%. there's no public opposition to the plan. the police chief says wearing the cameras will be mandatory. berkeley voters will get to decide if there should be a tax on sugary drinks sold in the city. last night the city approved this on the ballot. if voters approve it, there will be a penny tax on drinks with added sugar. the money will go into the city's general fund. so it only requires a simple majority to pass. in just two hours, jury deliberations resume in bryan stow's civil lawsuit against the los angeles dodgers. the jurors are deciding whether the dodgers and former owner frank mccourt are responsible for the brutal beating in the stadium parking lot that left

the giants' fan with severe brain damage. stow's lawyers are asking for about $50 million in damages claiming the dodgers claimed to provide adequate security. bryan so's mother discussed the family's options if they don't win this case. >> we'll have to look at maybe cutting out bryan's nighttime care and taking care of bryan ourselves, getting him ready for bed and keep somebody for two hours in the morning. >> the attack happened on opening day, 2011. the dodger defense team argues there was more security that day than at any other dodgers' opening day in history. barry bonds will be heading back to court in a couple of months. the 9th circuit court of appeals agreed yesterday to review his obstruction of tus conviction. it will be heard -- justice conviction. it will be heard by a nine- judge panel. he served 30 days of house arrest for giving evasive testimony during the government investigation into the use of

performance-enhancing drugs. arguments in the new case are set for september. well, caltrans is warning drivers to get ready for delays and detours. the weekend closure of 280 begins at 9:00 tonight. caltrans is shutting down northbound lanes between the 101/280 interchange and downtown san francisco for freeway repair work. the closure is scheduled to last the entire 4th of july weekend until 5:00 a.m. on monday morning. now, the southbound lanes of interstate 280 will remain open. a stretch of southbound 280 in san francisco was closed over the memorial day weekend for a similar highway repair project. another 280 closure is planned for the labor day holiday weekend. and wildlife officials are asking for people to be on the lookout for a marmot that's running loose in san francisco. it was spotted yesterday under the deck of a home near 25th and rhode island streets in potrero hill. wildlife officials are hoping to capture it soon to return it

to the native in sierra. last june, another was spotted in the bernal heights neighborhood and managed to stay on the loose for almost two months before it was captured. 7:38. we continue our live coverage of that huge wildfire in napa county. the new information that came in from the fire lines just one hour ago. a parking lot filled with cars and broken glass. the crime problem at one particular amtrak parking lot and why one victim tells ktvu getting help is not easy. well, plenty of low clouds around. it will be cooler today. we'll show you how much cooler and what's in store for the holiday weekend.

it is 7:41. the accused mastermind of the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya two years ago is scheduled to appear in a federal court in washington, d.c. today. the u.s. attorney's office says he was motivated by his extremist ideology. he's accused of directing the assault on the u.s. consulate back on september 11th, 2012 that killed three americans. he was captured by american commandos on the outskirts of benghazi. he's pleaded not guilty. the pentagon says more u.s. troops could be sent to iraq. that's because sunni-backed militants are moving closer to bagd. military leaders say the main concern is to protect baghdad's airport. it's the only way to evacuate thousands of americans out of baghdad if the embassy or the city itself comes under attack.

california's health insurance exchange is under fire. a federal auditor says marketplaces across the country were sometimes lax when it comes to verifying applicants' eligibility for obamacare. ktvu's kyla campbell is live in washington, d.c. to explain what the auditor had to say about covered california. kyla? >> reporter: tori, in california alone, this report said there were about 150,000 inconsistencies with applications. most of them involved income information. that could result in people receiving too much in subsidies, your tax dollars, and having to repay that money on future tax bills. more than 40,000 of the inconsistencies in california included verifying citizenship for applicants. the california marketplace said the findings are based on a small sample, 45 applicants compared to the 1.4 million who signed up. the white house said the report

there's still break-ins at a parking lot near the coliseum. one man takes amtrak daily from oakland to santa clara. he said his truck was broken into twice in two months, most recently on friday. he isn't alone. he said four other vehicles were vandalized in the same lot on the same day. >> it doesn't feel good to know your belongings were ripped apart. they didn't steal anything. straight up vandalism. >> he complained to an amtrak employee and said he was told to park at a different station. he also reported the crime to oakland police. opd says they patrol the area but amtrak does its own patrol of the parking lot. we want to check in with sal who says we're already seaing the effects -- seeing the effects of the holiday week. >> yeah, as a matter of fact, we're seeing lighter conditions on a lot of these freeways. highway 80, we go to the maps to show the road sensors, not that much. there was a stalled truck on 80

near central avenue. even that didn't cause a lot of slow traffic. when you get to berkeley, you will see traffic is moderate. the drive time has picked up from 19 minutes to 26 minutes now between the carquinez bridge and the macarthur maze. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, a backup, 25 minutes. we're thinking this will improve in the 8:00 hour because of the way the traffic is monning. we can't be -- moving of we can't be sure. 880 southbound beginning to get more slow traffic in hayward, fremont and union city. you can see traffic there. in san jose, the slowest freeway is still 101, although it's better than other days. we're beginning to see a little bit of that holiday week effect. friday we won't have mauch of a -- have much of a commute at all. let's go to steve. half moon bay, local clouds

we're seeing some improvement for your morning drive to work, especially in the south bay but all over the place now. we'll start with the bay bridge where there's still quite a bit of slow traffic for you to wade through to get into san francisco. your drive time is about 25 minutes average getting into the city with no major problems on the span itself. also looking at the san mateo bridge, that traffic is doing very nicely getting over to the peninsula. it's about a 15-minute drive time from the toll plaza hayward area over to the peninsula where you will see she traffic at 101 -- at and 92. 2800 is still a little bit slow in cupertino. highway 101 usually looks worse. most of what i am drawing on is red. today it's pretty green. traffic is a little bit slow in mountain view but that's all. you can see that we have a better commute on this wednesday than we would on a normal wednesday. 8:01. back to the desk. thank you. we continue to follow developing news out of napa

[audio difficulties] >> it we lost tara's live shot. the fire is at 30% containment. 3200 acres. we'll re-establish with tara and get you an update as soon as we can. in the meantime, the red cross has set up two evacuation centers for people ordered to leave their homes. one is at middletown high school on big canyon road in lake county. the second is at pope valley elementary school. well, two fires burning at the same time in san jose exposed just how stretched the city's resources are for the fire season. on monday afternoon, a large

grass fire threatened holes in south san jose -- homes in south san jose, another fire started six miles away at the public golf course. 60% of the city's fire crews responded to both fires and that left only a handful of firefighters to cover any emergencies for the rest of the city. the fire captain says if they are ever in need of more help, they will call in off-duty firefighters or ask for help from nearby cities. despite being a very dry winter only one bay area city set a low rainfall record. the national weather service's official rain year ended yesterday. san jose marked the second driest year with 6.4 inches of rain. it was san francisco's 15th driest year. oakland, however, recorded its driest year ever with only 9 inches of rain. santa cruz also set a record with just 13 inches.

8:03. it's day two on the job for the new superintendent of the oakland public school system. ktvu talked with antwan wilson who says he has two main goals for oakland schools, improved graduation rates and getting more students into college. but he says both goals will take time and work. right now the oakland unified school district has 40,000 students, 100 schools and a $64 million budget shortfall. >> if kids do not have access to quality teachers, they do not have access to rigorous curriculum, they do not have a safe environment, anything else we look to build on top of that weak foundation will crumble. >> before coming to oakland, he was the assistant superintendent in denver. he wants oakland to become a city people move to because of the public school system. you might want to take a closer look at the next parking ticket you get in san francisco. the san francisco examiner says one man reported getting a

parking ticket even though he had been in the spot for less than the four-hour posted time limit. he moved his car to a different spot and kept watch. he saw a city officer start to write him a ticket less than four hours after he parked. he says when he confronted her, she drove away. he argued his case to muni who is refunding his $74 fine. a muni spokesman told the examiner is receives similar complaints frequently but officers to their best to get it right. there are plans for three new microapartment projects in the hayes valley. the neighborhood is filled with shops, restaurants and parks. some people say all of that could offset living in a place that's just 74 square feet. that's the size of a -- 174 square feet. that's the size of a shipping container. >> anything we can do to

is growing in size. want to go to some new video from newschopper2. want to go to the fire. tara moriarty is at the command center where we understand conditions are also helping firefighters. >> reporter: we just drove through the fire-ravaged area, there are scorched power lines. they are down in the roadway. there's also a home and fg around the home -- everything around the home has burned. but the home is still standing. now, when we drove through, we noticed there's into raging fire but there are a lot of hot spots. it's quite smoky. this morning calfire released new numbers. the acreage burned is 3200. 380 homes are threatened. 180 of those had to be evacuated. we know that the fire moved northeast overnight into lake county and some bad news, the winds are expected to pick up and humidity is already dropping. crews have 30% containment at this point. we are in butts canyon, just

east of calistoga. at least five buildings have burned to the ground, one of them possibly a home. >> we're very nervous. we need to get the message out to the public, that there's zero-tolerance for illegal fireworks in the state. the safe and sane fireworks, you have to be very careful also. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is under investigation. the fire began around noon yesterday. it quickly scorched hundred of acres of wooded hillside parched by years of drought. many families ended up at red cross shelters north and south of the fire. we know that temperatures are already on the rise. that is a great concern to firefighters. we'll have much more on this story coming up on our noon news. we're live in napa county, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you for the update. the red cross has set up two evacuation centers for people ordered to leave their homes. one is at middletown high school on big canyon road in lake county. the second is at pope valley elementary school. the city of berkeley is

going to try to reduce -- try a new tactic, rather, to reduce an out-of-control squirrel population. as alex savidge explains, though, it involves changing some human behavior, right, alex? >> reporter: good morning to you, tori. the idea is to deal with the large squirrel population here at cesar chavez park in berkeley. this has been an ongoing problem in the area. this particular park is built on top of a landfill. those critters have been burrowing holes in the dirt here. there's concern that could lead to a toxic leak if they break through the clay cap that covers up this former dump. so the city of berkeley has made it a crime to feed squirrels and other animals in the park. this happened during the council meeting last night. originally the city was considering killing the squirrels but the council backed away from the idea after a public outcry. the council formed a special

squirrel subcommittee to try to come up with another solution. that's when they decided the best way to control the critters was to simply have the public stop feeding them. once the new law takes effect, anyone tossing food to squirrels could face $1,000 fine and possibly six months in jail. over the next couple of months, the city is expected to begin putting up new signs and brochures at city parks letting people know not to feed the squirrels. one woman out walking said she was happy to hear that the city is going with a more humane solution to this ongoing problem at this park. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. about 140 undocumented immigrants, many of them unaccompanied children, are at a federal facility in san diego this morning. that's after they were blocked from reaching their intended destination in murrieta. three loaded buses had to turn around and instead go to a

customs and border facility in san diego. the immigrants came from texas where facilities have been overwhelmed by an influx of children crossing the border illegally. the authorities are racing to find facilities to accommodate them but protesters say they don't want them in murrieta. >> we gotta get a handle on immigration. you gotta stop giving them a reason to come over. >> we're the ones who build your homes. we're the ones that do your plumbing. >> now, what happens next is unclear. murrieta city officials say they were told to expect 140 immigrants every three days. the next group is scheduled to arrive on the 4th of july. today, burger king is releasing a new video about a sandwich it calls the proud whopper. only the market street restaurant in san francisco has that burger and sales started during last weekend's pride celebration. it's wrapped in a rainbow colored paper with the inscription we are all the same inside but that's the only difference between it and a

night to battle a fire that's rapidly spread and is currently on the move. tara moriarty is at the command center this morning. coming up in two minutes, tara will tell us what she noticed while driving past some of the burned areas that surprised her and stands as an example of how hard firefighters are working to save homes in the area. good morning. i'm brian flores in for dave clark. let's take a look at your weather and traffic. steve is right over there. thank you, much. rather strong sea breeze in place. gusts to 30 for some out to the delta. west-southwest for many. it's a sea breeze in place. temperatures are really slow to warm up here. started in the 50s we're still in the low, not very many 60s. thunderstorms possible in the sa sierra nevada the probably on the nevada side. there's a lot of fog. you are getting helped alightning by a weak front. as it does, it's giving us local drizzle. local overcast. sunny. low clouds made a rather significant push inland this morning. that will make for a below

normal temperature today. 80s for some. 50s, 60s, 70s for others. just getting word of major b.a.r.t. delays. i have to hang up the phone here. just got off the phone with b.a.r.t. central. they have police activity going on at the coliseum station and they also have a train with mechanical difficulties. these two things are causing major delay on the fremont line. this -- the fremont line, trains from richmond and fremont into san francisco experiencing major delays because of the police activity and also one of the trains has mechanical difficulties. if you drake a train on the fremont line to san francisco -- take a train on the from line to san francisco -- this is just coming into the newsroom. we're gonna try to find out more. you can see traffic will be okay on the bay bridge toll plaza as you drive at the toll plaza. it's about a 15-minute delay. things are getting a little bit

better. now, then, at the coliseum, traffic is a little bit slow. northbound 880 passing the coliseum. a ten-minute drive into the city. there are no major problems getting into the area. south bay traffic continues to look good. we've had some slowing. it's not been full strength today as we get closer to the 4th. just to eit rate, the -- reiterate, the major bart clays on the fremont -- delays on the fremont line are affecting commutes into the city. back to the desk. >> all right, sal. thank you. fire investigators in oakland are trying to determine the cause of a destructive house fire. now, want to go to the scene moments after the fire started around 1:30 this morning. there you go at the home on el a say -- el paseo drive. the flames gutted the home and forced the evacuation of a hours next door.

the fire was extinguished fairly quickly. we had one exposure threatened. >> investigators are expected to return to the scene later this morning as they try to pinpoint the cause of the fire. this morning, we're on the scene of developing news in napa county, where a wildfire is growing in size. i want to go so some video from newschopper2 of the fire. ktvu's tara moriarty is at the command center as well with the latest on this morning's firefight. tara? >> reporter: we're here in butts canyon. just down the road we were able to take a drive and we would see some scorched power lines, and you can see where the fire jumped the road. there's no raging fire at this point. but there is a lot of smoke, as you can see from newschopper2 and it has just filled the air. this morning, calfire actually upgraded the burn to 3200. 380 homes are threatened.

180 had to be evacuated. now, the winds are expected to pick up and the humidity will drop at least five buildings have burned to the ground. one of them possibly a home. crews say they have the fire 30% contained. >> the temperatures were a little bit cooler which enabled us to get close to the fire lines and go direct right up on the fire's edge. however, the humidity did not go very high last night. right now, you can see the smoke, if you have been here for a little bit, you can see that the smoke is starting to rise, it's starting to clear up. and now we're gonna get some heat on the fire. >> reporter: the fire began around noon yesterday. it quickly scorch youd hundreds of acres of wooded hillside parched by years of drought. many families ended up at one of two red cross shelters located north and south of the fire. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. we're live in napa county, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, thank you.

as tara mentioned, mandatory evacuations are in place. people from the west side of butts canyon road to north of snell valley road are being told to leave their homes. the red cross has set up two evacuation centers. once again, one is at middletown high school on big canyon road in lake county. the second is at pope valley elementary school. 8:34. there's extra security at washington hospital in fremont this morning, following a disturbing discovery. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live to tell us about the bomb parts that were found inside the hospital building and janine just spoke to a hospital staff member. what did they say? >> reporter: tori, a spokesman told me that the fbi is actively investigating, so they would not say exactly when the explosive device was found but he did confirm that there had been more than one security threat that's happened here at washington hospital. in the hospital notice put out yesterday evening, it states that there have been recent

security -- local law enforcement examined a dedevice. anyone entering the buildings are subject to increased security screenings, including the inspection of personal belongings. patients and visitors were not aware of the threat. >> it's sort of strange to hear about it after. i guess they don't want to alarm patients, you know, and make whatever is happening with them worse. >> a lot of staff looking around and coming back and forth and checking their doors and seeing everything working. and again, just reassuring us that we were fine. >> the safety of everyone who enters washington hospital is our highest concern. and we -- there are enhanced security measures that we put in place that are seen and

unseen to ensure the safety. >> reporter: that was the spokesman from washington hospital who says the leadership here and the security staff are working closely with law enforcement. he says anyone entering the plg must wear -- building must wear hospital identification. again, the spokesman says he can't reveal any additional details about the security related incidents because they don't want to jeopardize the fbi investigation. reporting live from fremont, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. we have new information about a home-invasion robbery in san jose where an 85-year- old woman was the victim of a sexual assault. police say two suspects broke into the home of the woman and her husband early yesterday morning. we now know they were armed with a knife used to force the couple to the back of their home. >> right now i'm feeling like so disgusted with the people that did this and this couple is -- just like i said, so

sweet. >> the two suspects stole the couple's car and were later spotted by police. after a short chase, they crashed into a vacant home. the 15-year-old who was pinned in the passenger seat was arrested. police are looking for the driver who is described as latino between the ages of 17 and 25 with a possible severe cut from the crash. police are hoping to get more information to put together a sketch. hayward police will start using small body-mounted video cameras to record their encounters with the public before the end of the year. the hayward city council approved buying the cameras that attach to an officer's uniform or glasses and record video and audio. the city attorney says that could help cut claims of officers using excessive violence as much as 50%. there was no public opposition to plan and the police chief says wearing the cameras will be mandatory. caltrans is warning drivers to get ready for delays and

detours. the weekend closure of 280 in san francisco begins at 9:00 tonight. caltrans is shutting down northbound lanes between the 101/280 interchange and downtown san francisco for freeway repair work. the closure is scheduled to last the entire 4th of july weekend until 5:00 monday morning. the southbound lanes of interstate 280, however, will stay open. the stretch of southbound 280 in san francisco was closed over the memorial day weekend for a similar highway repair project. another 280 closure is planned for the labor day holiday weekend. 8:39. a food truck explosion caught on camera just eight minutes, the nearby object police believe triggered this fiery scene. >> reporter: we're at the marin county fair where game is on. your move. we're playing some big games out here. when we come back, we'll show you something ridiculous.

on sugary drinks sold in the city. last night, the city council approved putting the measure on the november ballot. if voters approve it, the measure will impose a penny an ounce tax on sodas, sweet teas and other drinks with added sugar. the money will go into the city's jen general fund so it -- general fund so it only requires a sim a majority to pass -- sim a majority to pass -- simple majority to pass. the federal government is suing t mobile for the practice known as cramming. they say t-mobile charged customers for premium services, including special ring tones and horoscope subscriptions that the companies never authorized. one customer found one of those ten-dollar charges on page 123 of his bill. consumer advocates say lengthy bills make it easy for t-mobile to hide charges. >> it looks to us like t- mobiles with trying to get away

a jury has cleared johannes mehserle of civil rights violations in a claim brought by oscar grant's father. now, the father was seeking finance am damages for his son's death. jurors concluded grant's father did not have a close relationship with his son. the father has been serving a life sentence for murder since before his son was born. >> the kind of conversations he would have with his dad would be simple conversations about staying out of trouble, become responsible, of course, get your education, get a job.

>> the attorney for oscar grant's father says he's considering an appeal. the two women who were attacked while heading home from last weekend's gay pride celebration in san francisco are speaking out about their harrowing experience. ja ki and jennifer were walking along 9th and market when they were attacked by six men. >> got kicked at least ten times that i could count before i held my head and i curled up into a little ball. >> i seen the guy lift back his leg and kick her so hard in the head it reminded me a football player kicking off the ball. >> i felt slows to being gone. >> jennifer says one of the men told her she was being attacked because she's gay. both women suffered injuries and are working with a police sketch artist. police have several leads and are asking witnesses to come

forward. there is growing frustration about a rash of car break-ins at an amtrak parking lot near the oakland coliseum. one man takes amtrak daily from oakland to santa clara. he says his truck was broken into twice in two months. most recently on friday and he is not alone. he says four other vehicles were vandalized in the same lot on the same day. >> it just doesn't feel good to know that your belongings were ripped apart. they didn't even steal anything. they just straight up vand halism -- vandalism. >> he complained to an employee and said he was told to park at a different station. he reported the crime to oakland police. the police say they patrol the area but amtrak does its own patrol of the parking lot. well, the man some people consider america's most attractive felon is now wanted by a modeling agency. 30-year-old jeremy meeks of stockton stirred up a social media frenzy when his mugshot went viral.
