more than 1,000 firefighters are working to get a wildfire in napa county under control. the butts fire broke out yesterday afternoon in butts canyon just west of lake berryessa. governor jerry brown has secured a federal grant to help pay for the firefight. right now, the fire has burned 3200 acres. it's only 30% contained. already five structures have burned and 380 more are threatened, which means evacuations are in effect. we have team coverage with steve paulson in the weather center tracking the conditions firefighters will be facing today. but we begin with john fowler who is at the fire command post and joins us live. good afternoon, john. >> reporter: good afternoon,er , tori. the fire is burning over the ridge of those hills. a few smolts ago, i spoked to a homeowner who learned his home has burned to the ground. let's take a look at the lives from newschopper2.

you will see the fires burning northeast of the napa valley and pope valley. huge plume of smoke. the residents have been evacuated. about 50 people we've learned are sheltering in place with fire engines protectioning them -- protecting them. firefighters say the weather remains a big challenge. it's getting drier as we speak. even as they struggle with hot spots they are very concerned about with the days ahead. >> we're looking at the 4th of july this weekend. we're very nervous. we need to get the message out to the public that there is zero-tolerance for any illegal fireworks in the state. the safe and sane fireworks, you have to be very careful with those also. >> reporter: this morning, governor browns announced the state has received a grant. it covers 75% for the cost of the butts fire. there are more than 1,000 firefighters on the line. residents say smoke in the area

is less than yesterday afternoon but temperatures are now heating up. we'll have much more on this coming up live at 5:00. reporting live near the fire lines, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, john. here is a look at where the fire is burning. mandatory evacuations are in effect from the west side of butts canyon road to north of snell valley road. an evacuation center has been set up at middleton high school on big canyon road in lake county. let's check in with steve paulson who has been monitoring the weather conditions in the area and joins us with what firefighters are facing today. >> it is pea gypping to warm up. it -- beginning to warm up. it was 51 degrees this morning. two observations from pope valley. it's 82 right now. the humidity was way up, even had a few low clouds this morning it bushed off pretty early. humidity was 80%, 90%. now it's hovering around 40,

took just 15 minutes to extend give a house fire but the home was a total loss. the fire started around 1:30 a.m. at a home on el paseo drive in east oakland. flames were coming out of every window and the front door when firefighters arrived. they spoke with the homeowner who says he sometimes lives there but was not there at the time of the fire. >> the fire was extip gived fairly -- extinguished fairly quickly. one structure was threatened but did not burn. we're investigating further and performing overall. >> firefighters are trying to pinpoint the cause. the damage is estimated at $250,000. the bay area man at the center of a prostitution and money laundering investigation just appeared in federal court a short time ago. alex savidge was there and joins us live from outside of the courthouse. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. we just spoke with one of the defense attorneys. she believes the charges here

are baseless. she calls this a first amendment case. she said the defendants were providing an online public forum and what was said on the website should be protected free speech. both of those defendants went before a federal judge a short time ago. the two appeared in court. the man entered a not guilty plea. both are free right now on bond. they were arrested last week and federal authorities seized their controversial website. the two were charged with using the mail and internet to fa till say prostitution. they say that allowed section workers to advertise services and help others find dancers and other adult entertainment. their --

>> the debt is part of our daily -- the internet is part of our daily life. it needs to be protected. this is a novel question, if the question will be litigated in the court. >> reporter: in addition, omuro is facing money laundering charges. the federal government says that he was transferring revenue from myredbook.com into bank accounts. prosecutors say the two defendants pulled in more than $5 million over the last four years. meantime, another thing that happened this morning in judge. the judge relaxed the rules a little bit to their release allowing them to use the internet with one exception. neither are allowed to access the website or any of its affiliated websites. both defendants are due back in federal court next week. we're live this afternoon in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, alex. some scary moments at a hospital in fremont after the staff was informed that parts of a bomb were found on a

property. that prompted the staff to go on high alert. but law enforcement authorities are now saying something different. ktvu's janine de la vega sorts it out for us in this report. >> reporter: washington hospital on mowry avenue beefed up its security after discovering suspicious items it thought might be a threat. the hospital put out this notice to all employees saying additional security personnel and extra screening measures are in place as a result of recent security related incidents which included the discovery of the components of a bomb found in the main hospital. the device was examined and confirmed to be the makings of an explosive device by local law enforcement and the fbi. >> it was a little scary but they came out and told us everything was fine, that we were safe. >> reporter: some hospital employees told us they were nervous and wanted more information but were focused on patient care. they were e-mailed the notice last night. fremont police never confirmed

the makings of a bomb were found. a spokesperson said the hospital made the discovery a couple of days ago but the department was not called until yesterday. >> we sent an investigator out to look at the items, confirm the items were suspicious. we then took potential of the items and then are now investigating why the items were left there. >> reporter: police say there's no threat but are investigating whether it was abandoned property or if it was left intentionally. >> the security is our highest concern. there are enhanced security measures that we put in place that are seen and unseen to ensure the safety. >> reporter: washington hospital says they don't want their patients to worry and they are still providing the same level of care. it reporting in fremont -- reporting live in fremont, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. in about an hour, the state department of fish and wildlife will discuss a mountain lion attack that happened in san mateo yesterday morning behind

a home on near hillsdale boulevard. residents heard noises and when they went outside, they saw the mountain lion killing a deer. officials are warning people to be extra careful in wooded areas and not to feed deer which attract mountain lions. i was there inside the courtroom as the accused benghazi terrorist came before a federal judge. coming up what his attorney said about him remaining behind bars. and a new city law in the east bay makes it illegal to feed squirrels. how this is effected to concerns about leaking at a former dump.

the libby yan militant charged in the deadly -- libby yan militant charged in the benghazi attacks was in court. justin gray was there for the proceedings as we learn more about the case. >> reporter: what actually took place in the courtroom was actually pretty routine. what a rare, strange site an accused foreign terrorist sitting before a judge in a u.s. courtroom. [ sirens ] >> reporter: a major security effort as ahmed abu khatallah made his way to washington, d.c. district court. inside, the 43-year-old was calm and attentive and required an arabic translator to determine whether he will stay locked up behind bars until his

trial gets underway. prosecutors have charged ahmed abu khatallah in connection to the 2012 attack in libya that killed the u.s. ambassador and three others. in court papers prosecutors say the defendant gave voluntary statements corroborating key facts. prosecutors said there are witnesses and physical evidence linking him to the terrorist attack. they say even after benghazi, the defendant had continued to make efforts to target american personnel and property. ahmed abu khatallah's court appointed attorney concedes he should stay locked up until trial but she described her client not as an anti-american terrorist but as an enemy of gadhafi who to the the regime. report -- who to the the regime. san francisco police have broken up an illegal fireworks

operation days before the 4th of july. they say 18-year-old eric yang was running the operation out of a cafe on grant street in chinatown. he had a 15-year-old boy retrieve the fireworks from a storage place. police say they confiscated about 100 illegal fireworks that were being sold for $10 apiece. >> we're talking about a destructive device, whether it's called an m 1-000 or an m- 80, it's strong. you could lose a hand or an arm. it's very drugs. >> prosecutors are charging the 18-year-old with felony possession of explosives and child endangerment. hayward police will start to use small body-mounted video cameras to record their encounters with the public before the end of the year. the city council approved buying the cameras that attach to an you an officer's uniform or glasses -- to an officer's uniform or glasses and record video and audio.

there was no public opposition to the plan and the police chief says wearing the cameras will be mandatory. first it was oakland mayor quan's fender-bender now mayor lee is making news on the road. today, san francisco chronicle pushed these twitter photos of mayor lee's car pulling up outside of devil's teeth yesterday. that's a making company in the city's sunset neighborhood. one photo shows the mayor's chevy volt apparently double parked. another shows the same car apparently blocking the intersection. so far, there's been no response from the mayor's office. meanwhile, in oakland, there's growing frustration after a rash of car break-ins at an amtrak parking lot near the coliseum. one man who did not want to be identified said his truck was broken into twice in two months. most recently on fry. he says four other vehicles were also vandalized on the same lots in the same day.

>> it doesn't feel good to know your belongings were ripped apart. they didn't steal anything. straight up vandalism. >> he complained to an amtrak employee and said he was told to park at a different station. he reported the crime to oakland police who say they do patrol the surrounding area but amtrak is in charge of their own lot. the city of berkeley is hoping to reduce an out-of- control squirrel population at city parks with a new ordinance. officials are concerned that squirrels at sees rar chavez park -- cesar chavez park will burrow into an underlayer of clay that seals off a former dump at the park. the city council approved an ordinance making it illegal to feed the squirrels at all city parks. violaters could face possible fines of $1,000 or a six-month jail sentence or both. the city previously proposed an extermination plan for the squirrels. three big gulf events are coming to san francisco

including a major championship. this monthing, the pga commissioner and ed bishop made the announcement at city hall along with mayor ed lee. the tournaments are the match play championship next spring. the pga championship in 2020 and the president's cup in 2025 and they will all be played at harding park. >> i'm as excited as when former mayor willie brown asked me to build that clubhouse out there at harding park back in the early 2000s. he said you better build it on time because the pga professionals are coming in and they can't be delayed. >> harding hosted the cup in 20009. the match play event has spent the last eight years in arizona. well, a little update on

our weather pattern up in napa. we'll have that in a second. had a lot of fog this morning. made a very, very significant push inland. it's now retreating back to the coast. it's sunny but breezy. and the temperatures are noticeably cooler. there dropped yesterday and they've settled in there. it looks like a day of below normal temperatures. 83. we had 82. the humidity has gone done a little bit. but the wind has turned more westerly at some of the higher elevations. that's taking the smoke a little bit away from lake county. one of our observers said the wind has shifted. you can see a little more westerly breeze. that might be sending some of that more to the east instead of south to north. it's still warming up. at high -- the high will be about 91. some fog to the north but there's plenty at the coast. we had a weak front by. when you get to july, that's all you need is the weak front.

we had trizle in sausalito, daly city, westlake, san mateo coast, we had some. 76 in livermore. fairfield, 73. that's one of the higher elevations. concord, 76. san jose the 70s. 57 half moon bay. it's a cool one. up north, 72. by this time on monday, i think they were about 90. 87 in lakeport. still warm there. calistoga was only 75 and 74 healdsburg. petaluma 66 degrees. a sign of much cooler air not only at the surface but also aloft. the breeze has been coming down a little bit. it was rip roaring at travis at 30, 35. concord is decreasing. they are southerly so there's still a southerly breeze heading up the valley. slight westerly for most locations including sfo northwest, west and then livermore west. san jose has had southeast most of the day. thunderstorms continue to pop up over the sierra right on cue. a little quieter today. the fog will be back tonight. ukiah is 87. sacramento is only 78.

tahoe is warmer than that. it's hot up there. the fog will be back. it looks like it will start to burn off sooner. low clouds, a little breezy but not too bad. the wind can pick up at times. 10, maybe some of the windiest locations get up to 30. the morning clouds will be back tonight and tomorrow. we call it the fog. sunny, breezy, clouds made it well inland. i think they will burn off sooner. 4th of july is looking near normal like we had this morning. i think there will be a decrease in the fog. temperatures, 60s, 70s and 80s. there are hints of a warmup as we head towards the weekend. today it will be 60s to 90s. some locations, down a good 15 degrees almost on monday. antioch, brentwood, oakland, 60s, 70s. oakland. 79, san jose. gilroy only 84. santa cruz, a lot of fog. 50s, 60s, 70s on the peninsula. it does look like a gradual decrease in the fog. it will still be with us until friday. then warmer inland temperatures

report that business hirings surged in june. also today, janet yellen said she does not see a dangerous excess esin the financial system so sees no need to raise interest rates. markets are open half day tomorrow. closed for the 4th of july. stage is set for another tense confrontation involving the future of the as in oakland. late yesterday, the city council ordered its four members on the coliseum board to reject the lease extension. that proposal would have lowered the as annual rent at the coliseum by 20%. the council will release its own proposed lease extension tomorrow addressing the economic concerns. last week, the city councilmembers on the coliseum board did not show up for a vote on the lease deal designed to keep the as in oakland for the next ten years. the mountain view city council has approved a year- long pilot program to charge for parking during events at

levi stadium in neighboring santa clara. the city held a dry run on how to deal with 49er fans transferring from caltrain to light rail on game days and for other events. now the city plans to hire a parking management company to run city lots and charge for parking in neighborhoods. there would be a three-hour parking limit at lots in the downtown area when events are held. burger king has a proud whopper. but it's only available at the market street restaurant in san francisco and only for another day. the proud whopper is the signature burger wrapped in rainbow colored paper which reads we are all the same inside. it went on sale during last week's pride celebration. it will continue until tomorrow. all money raised goes to a scholarship front for lgbt students. a food truck explodes with no warning and it is caught on surveillance video. people working in the truck did survive the massive explosion. tonight, starting at 5:00, we take a look at how food trucks
