backyard next to a canyon. ktvu's christien kafton is where the department of fish and wildlife are. >> reporter: there is a heard of deer in the neighborhood that made their home here. and this afternoon we captured video of those deer. the mountain lion eat dear regularly. if you need the deer you might be bringing mountain lions closer to your home. >> reporter: homeowners expect the deer lured mountain lions to the area. >> i think everybody should make theirselves aware of it. be aware the cat is here. >> reporter: he spotted the mountain lion twice. the first time on monday night. he heard a noise outside and went to investigation with his

son. >> we walk again yards this way and 15 feet away this cat steps up off a dead fawn and darts up the hill. >> reporter: people were surprised to learn a mountain lysine hunting here but say the deer population is growing. >> neighbors sometimes they just throw food to the deer. [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: that can set opdangerous cycle. >> -- up a dangerous cycle. fish and wildlife say mountain lions pose very little risk to people so they won't be catching or killing it. all the same when he left his dog out, he will bring along extra protection. >> i have guns.

30% contained. crews are having trouble getting around the fire because it is in such a remote area. they are bringing in more resources. meteorologist mark tamayo has more on the weather but first ktvu's john fowler joins us live at a red cross evacuation center where they are hoping for good news. john? >> reporter: that's right. right now the -- here neighbors have been dropping off pet food, boxes and canned and pet carriers. plus the salvation army began serving dinner for families whose homes are still at risk from the fire. >> reporter: this fire is still burning across the hills of pope valley. clouds of emotions. >> scary. tiring. worrisome. >> she fled her home of 15

years. >> got the kids. got the dog and the cat. chickens and turkeys are still there and my husband stayed back. >> reporter: firefighters protecting 50 homes where resident could not or would not leave. the wind and humidity today favored firefighters. 280 structures remain at risk and evacuations still in effect. american red cross volunteers expected a new surge of needy people. >> we expect twice as many to spend the night. >> reporter: the red cross expects 60 people tonight. >> especially accommodating the people who evacuated with their pets. >> reporter: there is a lot of support in the community. one sheriff's deputy left to feed pets at one house. everyone is hoping that some

drivers. caltrans is closing off interstate 280 at 9:00 p.m. tonight it will be closed till 5:00 a.m. monday for road repairs. happening now, ktvu's amber lee has the plan for the closure. >> reporter: we are on indiana vote. 280 north bound -- street. 280 north bound, between 101 and 280 to king street. they hope to reopen monday. crews will take out the road with a jack hammer and putting in a new one. the road was built in 1964. it is warn and time to be replaced. officials estimate 130,000 motorist use 280 each day. officials say the closure is expected to cause traffic back ups. >> you never know how bad it

will be. i would say minimum, i would say give yourself another hour. >> the work is expected to be completed this weekend and it will open 5:00 a.m. mondays. they are advising people to take public transit and the other alternatives are 101 or surface streets. reporting live in san francisco, amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. very important and visual warning as the 4th of july is upon us. look at what happened to a man. residents heard a explosion last night and called 911. deputies found a man holding his arm and covered in blood. he was holding a fire work when it exploded in his hand. the man was flown to a hospital. it is unclear how badly he was injured. deputies e-mailed us this photo. it is a reminder on how dangerous fireworks could be.

firefighters are sitting on countless kegs of exploded. ktvu's tom vacar joins us now with the explosive problem. tom? >> reporter: just take a look at how dry the fuel in. law says seized fireworks must be turned over for safe disposal at federal facilities in louisiana or missouri at $6 a pounds. >> reporter: for two years now the state couldn't afford disposet and holds 300,000 pounds of fireworks and no more space available. he says that left local agencies holding the seized explosives. >> every fire agency in california has the same issue. we have these dangerous goods,

explosives, putting them into residential neighborhoods and storing them there. >> reporter: most are professionally made to be used by professionals and they remain stable in storage but we are getting things like these, they are not stable. they are made by non- professionals. if they go off they become weapons of mass destruction. >> we had it store a lot of dangerous fireworks for a long time. >> much has changed in the last couple years. >> the biggest problem we dealt with were cherry bombs, m 80s, bottle rockets. in the last couple years, these large scale dangerous fireworks being brought in from out of the state. the drought increased the fire danger. >> we had no fire units to send

of a leak in a propane tank. when police arrived they found a number of victims lying in the street. one person was on fire. 13 people were hurt. 5 are in critical condition. including the owner of the truck and her daughter. investigators said today a leak from one of two propane tanks created a vapor cloud that was ignited by the cooking grills. the truck was licensed to operate and open for business at the time of the explosion. that explosion was a hot topic today and ktvu's david stevenson is looking at who is making food trucks here are safe for customers and workers. >> that explosion in philadelphia made vendors at this food truck park think twice about their own safety. the explosion is huge as a
