conditions are absolutely terrible out here. it is hot, dry and as you can tell very windy. not to mention this community is fueled by propane tanks so that is the issues firefighters had to contend with and there are many hunters here so there is a lot of ammunition in the homes that have been popping throughout the afternoon and into this evening. 7 structures have burned so far. all of the people made it out okay. minus some minor burns as they tried to get their things. some pets did not make it out. the fire started in a field behind a home on the far end of town and spread quickly from there. we spoke with the family who lives in that home. >> i go running outside and i see the pfeifer. mom, there is a fire. we need help. we are -- see the fire. mom, there is a fire. we need help. there is a piece of fire that

wenten to my porch. >> reporter: this fire, their efforts to put out the fire were futile. it quickly spread jumping from house to house and house. now the woman you saw tells me they just moved into the rental home this week. there is controversy over who would get that home and she tells me threats were made and someone was seen in the field this afternoon. firefighters say they have not even had a chance to investigate those claims that the fire may be suspicious. at this point the fire had moved to an 8th structure and there is just no stopping flames as they are whipped by the wind. we will have updates throughout the night. katy eustis, ktvu channel 2 news. a water park in sacramento evacuated because of a fire near cal expo fairgrounds. at this point no structures are

women has authorities seeking the public's help. they started a task force in march to track down leads in the 38-year-old murder cases and tonight they are looking for a person of interest. ktvu's cristina rendon is in the news room with more on the developments. >> reporter: the fbi says every since they started the task force to reinvestigate the gregory hale murders they have been -- the gypsy hill murders they have been turning to the public and they are turning to the public again. >> reporter: file footage three decades sold a reminder of the unsolved mysteries, the gypsy hill murders. six women were stabbed to death in 1976. now the fbi is saying they are looking for a possible witness. a white man driving a car with a nevada license plate. investigators know it is a vague description but one they

hope trigars memory. >> if they saw -- triggers a memory. >> if they saw something out of the ordinary, maybe not at the right place at the right time. >> they reopened the investigation in march and dna evidence found on the five women matched dna on a women killed in nevada at the time. the brother of one of the victims says his family is glad the case is still alive. their mother is 80 years old now and wants to see her daughter's murder solved before she dies. >> there is a family so we are hoping -- [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: if anyone remembers a man from nevada who frequented the area in 1976 you are asked to call the fbi in san francisco and reference the gypsy hill murder cases.

cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. and to learn more about the gypsy hill killings, and more on the victims, go to our website, www.ktvu.com. new information on the shooting now of an 11-year-old boy in antioch. police say they arrested a 14- year-old boy for the shooting. he was arrested last night and is now in juvenile hall. the 11-year-old was shot yesterday. he was taken to a hospital in sacramento where he is in stable condition. the bay area getting ready for a big night, 4th of july celebrations. people are streaming into san francisco for the big fireworks show on the water but it is not all fun and game. with fireworks and dry conditions everywhere, tonight could be a busy one for firefighters across the bay area. let's start with the fun. 200,000 people are expected to be in san francisco the fireworks display and we will

start with a live look at the city. peer 39 at the water front. a lot of people crossing the street. we see fog already. we will keep an eye on the fog with mark tamayo but people show up whether or not the fog is there. fireworks start at peer thrown at 9:30 p.m. tonight. most people will gather where our camera is along the water front. live pictures here, a lot of people still making their way into the city. this is a live look at what is happening at the bay bridge. the fast track lanes are the clear ones. over all not too, too bad getting into san francisco. >> the big question will the fog stay away so everyone will see the big fireworks show. our meteorologist mark tamayo is here now. doesn't look good. >> yeah. when i arrived to work at 3:00

p.m. i was watching the fog, it has been increasing. clouded up over the past few minutes. going in and out. the fog is a factor. it is not going to be completely clear. there are breaks in the clouds as well. lots of low clouds and fog near the coast, pushed into the bay. the fog will be a factor in san francisco. you can see a closer look. the golden gate bridge. a few patches pushing back into the bay. a lot of fireworks shows, all the red dots correspondent to the fireworks displays. inland neighborhoods in the 70s. here is a look at san francisco. as you saw with the live cameras. low clouds and you want to bundle up. temperatures in the mid-50s. 55 at 9:30 p.m. coming up more about the fog for saturday morning and the one direction temperatures will be trending.

in many fire departments the 6:00 p.m. hour is the official beginning of maximum fire response activities for the many fires that will be set off tonight. especially after the many well planned and regulated professional fireworks. ktvu's tom vacar is in san pablo and looks at what firefighters are preparing for. >> reporter: there should be no trouble but look at this problem. what if the wind, the wind is picking up here. and the problem is, with illegal fireworks the fires get out of control very quickly and the drought is only getting worse. >> reporter: earlier today fire inspectors went to each of the six major shows in contra costa county to assure compliance to ensure safety. these inspectors will be here all through the shows as well.

now attention turns to the dark side. the many fires sure to be set off by those discharging illegal fireworks. professional pyrotechnician explains. >> it is not something where you can light a project and watch it go. there is more involved in that. you don't know who manufactured it and you don't anyhow how it will take off. >> the emergency operation center is opening right now to deal with a flood of fires soon to come. >> we have a meeting at 6:00 p.m. last minute preparations. we get busy around 9:00 p.m., 9:30 p.m. and we will be here into the morning hours. >> somewhere around midnight, 12:30 a.m., 1:00 a.m. maybe. >> reporter: this year another danger looms. the weekend. >> people have to go to work

in critical condition. 5 others, including two lapd officers were taken to the hospital. the chase began after police got a call about someone camperring with -- tampering with a call. the richmond b.a.r.t. station is shut down. a rider was struck by a train and now b.a.r.t. is reporting the person died. b.a.r.t. is waiting for the coroner to receive. b.a.r.t. trains are stopping at el cerrito and the a.c. transit bus line is taking over taking passengers to complete the run to richmond. a very grand marshal grace as parade in san jose today. >> his birthday was yesterday. greatest thing ever happened to him. >> why this veteran is so admired. >> and a warning about a chicken recall, what you need to know before you grill.

4th of july fireworks could be terrifying for pets. officers say they routinely spent july 5 out looking looking for dogs and cats. they say pets especially dogs need special care today. >> please don't leave your pets outside alone. don't bring them to a celebration. and please don't leave them in a car. leave them at home. >> she says if you leave your pet home alone leave a radio or a television on to drown out the noise from fireworks. foster farms chicken is under a recall after officials confirmed salmonella. the recall is for chicken with a "use or freeze by" dates from

remember those who served our country. 100,000 motorcyclists are expected to roll into town for this weekend's event. the rally started in 1947 and was the inspiration for the marlon brando movie the wild one. one man brought his own thunder bird that he has been restoring for 20 years. >> he had a bike exactly like this and road it in that movie. this bike is the icon. >> the rally features live music, food and all kinds of bike gear. the city set up a new surveillance camera system to help officers keep the peace. nice 4th of july out there. except fog near the immediate coast line and around san francisco as well.

we talked about that. impacting the fireworks in san francisco tonight. as far as temperatures today, they range from upper 50s in pacifica. san jose 79. warm inland, upper 80s to 90. antioch 98 degrees. there is the fog bank off shore and sneaking back into the bay. no big changes in the short term. the fog increases tonight and into tomorrow morning. here is an update on hurricane arthur. you can see made land fall last night off the north carolina coast line. right now still a hurricane, winds of 80 miles per hour. speed picking up. 28 miles per hour. here is the track into saturday. weakening into a tropical storm into saturday and sunday. as far as over night lows in the bay area, lots of 50s, santa rosa, san francisco, san jose 57. livermore mid-50s, 55. high pressure is rebuilding from the southwest. but it is not that hot off
