>> reporter: we're live in los gatos where a michelin star restaurant is partially in ruins after a fire rips through it. what employees are telling us. we're monitoring a crash that's blocking a busy road in fremont right now. the impact on traffic in the

area. also a man shot to death overnight. it's the size of a credit card but it's also very dangerous. the concern from tsa officials this morning, as "mornings on 2" starts now. 7:01. we continue to follow developing news in the south bay this morning, where a firefighter has been hurt fighting a well-known fire in los gatos. no word yet of what sparked the blaze. ktvu's janine de la vega is on the scene. she's been there since early this morning. coming up in two minutes, she will tell us the special reason the restaurant was shut down over the weekend and why this only adds to the mystery of what started the fire. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. a big welcome back to dave clark. >> good to be back. >> nice to have you back.

i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve is off today. but rosemary is over there. >> our warmup will continue for monday today. low 60s in antioch. 60 60 degrees in livermore. 58 redwood city, as we heed into the north bay, upper 50s to lower 40s. clouds at the coast and patchy fog. half moon bay. 54 degrees outside your door right now. these numbers are a lot like yesterday. even slightly warmer in some areas. it has to do with all of the cloud cover overhead. so the low clouds continuing as we have seen over recent days but there's something different going on this morning. we have high clouds in the area as well. these mid and high level clouds are streaming all the way from the desert southwest. this monsoonal moisture could make us feel a little different this afternoon. perhaps a little muggy. in the afternoon, giving you a look this morning, the cloedz

will clear out as we get into the second half the of the morning. for the second half of the day, the clouds move back into the bay area. i think it could be sticky for some of our hot spots. for today, temperatures are expected to peak. 80s and 90s for our inland areas. the shades of pink independent it -- indicating a few 100- degree temperatures. i will put some numbers on the screen and i'm tracking a cooldown coming up. good morning, sal. we have a serious accident this morning in fremont that's closed paseo parkway at the sequoia turnoff because of a pickup truck that ran into a tree early this morning. the driver was taken to the hospital. police describe his injuries as major. the traffic is not being allowed through on southbound and northbound. that is southbound you are

looking at here. northbound may be allowed within the next hour according to police, pretty soon, anyway. but southbound will be closed until 9:30 this morning. that's what we were told. again, major injuries. they have to use some of the other routes around the area. you cannot use paseo padre parkway. to the bay bridge toll plaza, 15, 20 minutes. if you are driving near the eastshore freeway, you will see elevated drive times because of earlier problems on rich mornd on 80 westbound. if you -- richmond on 80 westbound. 880, so far so good. the giants play the as at the coliseum. that means there are likely to be a lot of people attending. the best way to get to the coliseum is to take b.a.r.t. back to the desk. back to our developing news in los gatos where an award- winning restaurant caught on fire earlier this morning. fire crews have contained the fire now on village lane near university avenue. ktvu's janine de la vega has been updating us on the fire

for more than two hours. you've been talking to customers who are pretty upset. >> reporter: yeah, it's heartbreaking for them as well as employees in shock. this is a two-star michelin restaurant that's been here in downtown los gatos for 1 years. the staff says they -- 12 years. the staff says they are devastated. the smoke has died down. the firefighters are winding down their work. they've been ventilating the roof making sure the flames don't spark back up. here's video of the fire earlier this morning showing the flames and smoke engulfing the restaurant which is located on university and village. someone driving by spotted the fire at 4:00 a.m. and called 911 and because the fire station is less than a hundred yards away, crews were here quickly. they started to attack the fire. at one point the gas meter was in flames. it's unknown if that's where the fire started. the restaurant was vacant. we're told it was closed for the 4th of july and it was set to reopen this wednesday see it could have a thorough cleaning. that won't happen now.

again, it's heartbreaking for customers we spoke to this morning. they feel for the owner and chef, david. >> we were running by and we saw the fire hose. we're like what's going on? we saw that. we were devastated. i feel awful. >> reporter: you feel for david? >> oh, yeah. he puts his heart and soul into that restaurant. that's his life. >> reporter: during the firefight, a fireman was injured and had to be treated for a chest injury because he ended up falling down over debris. he was taken to the hospital and is said to be okay. and investigators are out here and will start to look for signs for evidence of what may have started the fire. we're told the dining area is intact but there's smoke and water damage. the back of the building and the roof has the most destruction. again, very difficult for restaurant employees. you are looking at a live picture of some of those employees who are out here and they are just in disbelief. one of them told me, you noel, it's hard for her -- you know,

it's hard for her not to cry. this restaurant has been rated one of the top ten in america. the owner and chef is not here yet, david kinch. he's on his way back from new york. he is scheduled to come back at this time. he will have a lot of thinking to do about his future plans. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. san francisco police are looking for clues in a deadly shooting. it happened around 3:00 in the sunnydale neighborhood. the shooting woke up many neighbors. some say they thought the gunfire was actually fireworks left over from the 4th of july. police say the victim was a man in his early 20s, just a short time ago, alex savidge spoke to one neighbor who knew the young victim. >> good young man. used to pick up his children at the teen center every day. any time i needed him to help

me do some work he helped. didn't ask for money. just a fun-loving by. i always saw him up here. he definitely didn't deserve this. >> it's still not clear what led up to the deadly gunfire. police are still looking for suspects. 7:07. hot temperatures, shifting winds, still hampering efforts to control the wildfire southeast of lake berryessa. this one started near the monticello dam. it's only 30% contained. dozens of homes are threatened. the drought has created dangerous conditions that firefighters don't see until late summer. >> very difficult access to get to but combined with the triple- digit figures, low humidity, it makes it a very challenging environment for firefighters to work aggressively all day and all night. >> many who were evacuated over the weekend, they are being allowed to go home this morning. coming up for you in 30

minutes, pam cook will tell us about the firefighter who was hurt on the fire lines. on the other side of lake berryessa, fire crews are making progress on the big fire that broke out there. calfire says the fire that started six days ago in napa county and has burned 4300 acres and destroyed two homes, it's now 90% contained. full containment expected tomorrow. passengers on some international flights heading to the u.s. will now be asked to turn on their cell phones and other electronics to prove they are not explosive devices. if the cell phone, tablet or laptop will not power up, it will not be allowed on the plane and the passenger may have to undergo additional screening. the new security measures follow reports that terrorists are developing -- or working, rather, to develop more sophisticated bombs to go undetected through airport

security. >> we continually evaluate the world situation, and we know that there remains a terrorist threat to the united states and aviation security is a large part of that. >> the new security measures will primarily focus on airports in europe and in the middle east. it is the size of a credit card but can be very dangerous. federal transportation officials have seen an increase in these rather discreet weapons. brian flores is live at sfo with this weapon that can actually fit in your wallet. >> reporter: that's right. good morning to you. they are called credit card knives. they are the size of a credit card. they are very dangerous and they are very hard to detect for airport screeners. now, the transportation security administration says they have seen a surge in the amount of credit card knives being found in people's wallets. they are thicker than the size of a credit card as we mentioned. they come in different designs

and shapes. but it becomes a knife with a steel blade once it is folded out. according to the l.a. times, so far this year, the tsa has confiscated nearly 500 of these on passengers. that equates to 20 per week. that's an increase. sfo topped the list where the credit card knives have been confiscated. a couple of weeks ago, the tsa says 61 knives were found at airports nationwide and 10 were recovered at sfo. these knives can be bought online and are priced anywhere from $3 to $15. they were allowed through security. if you have one going through security, the tsa says you will be asked to turn it over, you can give it to a friend or get rid of it. you can check it in your bag as well. the tsa says there isn't a specific group carrying the knives. kids and adults have been carrying. they've seen an increase in people carrying these knives. we have a call into tsa. we've not heard back.

brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. a man working at the alameda county fair was arrested for reportedly soliciting teenaged girls for the pornography industry. 16-year-old justice says her mother and brother had gone off to get a drink of water when a man approached her. she said he handed her a card with the name big pimpin, incorporated on it. the card reads, be a star and offers a signing contract for an 18th birthday contract. >> he asked if i was 18. i said no. i'm 16. he kind of thought about it and told me to call him when i turn 18. >> the teenaged girl and her mother reported that incident to the managers of the fairgrounds and 34-year-old aaron gimbert was arrested. managers of the fair ground say that gimbert is not a regular fairgrounds employee. he was a contract employee for the carnival. palo alto-based tesla wants to study the remnants of a stolen model s sedan that split

in half and burned after a high- speed chase in los angeles over the holiday weekend. according to bloomberg, the company is working with police and fire officials on the investigation. the crash happened on friday after the car was stolen from a dealership in west los angeles. the driver crashed into several cars and a light pole. no one was seriously hurt. authorities are also investigating the cause of another fiery crash involving a tesla in palmdale just a few hours later. the chp says a speeding tesla rear ended a toyota carrying a family of five. the toyota burst into flames. two children and one adult in the toyota were killed. the man driving the tesla was not injured. the safety of tesla cars bail an issue earlier this year after two fires were reported in the car's battery pack. since then, tesla has identified a titanium plate to further strengthen the casing that protects its battery. all right, tc.

7:13. they've been planning it for years. now the plans to extend b.a.r.t. into the south bay have hit a snag. coming up at 7:30, the problem that may delay the project. video of a chp officer beating a woman in the middle of a busy freeway is sparking outrage. the reason the officer says he did it and what's happening today in response to the video. and we're looking at a commute that is busy in many areas, including on the east shore and on highway 24 and a lot of the east bay freeways. we'll tell you more about the drive times in these locations. and our warming trend will peak this afternoon with temperatures reaching in the upper 90s to 100 for those hotter spots. i'll have a detailed look at the afternoon highs for your area and a cooling trend in the extended forecast -- coming up.

7:16. new this morning, a big earthquake this morning killed at least two people. it rocked parts of southern mexico and central america. it was a 6.9 magnitude quake. it hit about three hours ago and was centered off the southern pacific coast of mexico, about 20 miles from the border with guatemala. here is a new picture posted on twitter. look at this. firefighters took this picture in the city of san marcos in guatemala. you can see some of the damage caused by the earthquake. there are other reports that several homes were destroyed in guatemala and mexico. 7:17. today, a civil rights group plans to meet with chp officials in los angeles to talk about why a chp officer beat a woman in the middle of a busy freeway. this happened tuesday along the santa monica freeway. someone in a passing car took video of the incident. that video has gone viral. it shows the chp officer repeatedly punching marlene

pinick and her family plans to sue the chp. >> he punched and pound and pound on her. the only thing she could do was block her face. >> she got savagely beat by someone who seemed like he was trying out for mixed martial arts. it's absolutely unacceptable. >> the chp has not identified the officer but says he's been put on leave. a police report says the officer believed the woman was a danger to herself and other drivers because she was walking within traffic lanes. all right. 7:18. sal is coming back. you are watching all of the roads, especially the east shore. >> we had a couple of incidents on the eastshore freeway. it will be busier than normal. driving from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze, about 34 minutes and a lot of that is stop and go traffic coming in through richmond by the time you do get to the toll plaza, you will see traffic as slow there as well.

about a 25-minute drive time between oakland and san francisco side of the bridge. nothing major but it is not lighter than usual. and if you are driving as i move to the south bay, the traffic in san jose does look pretty good. northbound 101 has not been the same old slow traffic. it gets slow in sunnyvale up to mountain view. but 85 and 280 are doing pretty well. 7:19. let's go to rosemary. a warmer day in store. for some it could feel more humid. a live look at low clouds through areas this morning. we have the low cloud along the coast moving through parts of the delta. high clouds streaming in from the east. monsoonal moisture pulling in. this is why the influx could make it feel sticky for some. the ridge of high pressure and the circulation bringing in the mid and level high clouds today. perhaps for tomorrow as well. along the coastline, the low clouds stuck again. machine with low clouds for today along the coast and cool

for you there. around the bay, temperatures will feel quite nice. mid-70s for mid-80s. the hottest spots could hit 100 for your afternoon as temperatures peak today. 57 in napa. a 8 in redwood city and 60 -- 58 in redwood city. a warm day in san jose. mid-80s expected for the afternoon. as we get into 1:00, low 80s. 77 degrees at 7:00 and sunset is after 8:30 these days. a look at the afternoon highs. 63 pacifica with cloudy, cool conditions. 78 in oakland. 98 for concord. 99 in antioch. brentwood not on this map you are one of the areas expected to hit 100 for the afternoon. the good news for those of you that have had to bear the heat, it's on its way out. as early as tomorrow, we'll see the temperatures drop off, low 90s in the forecast for the hotter 1309s and then settling

-- spots and then settling in for wednesday, thursday, friday. your bare weekend always in -- bay area weekend always in view, showing mid- to upper 80s in the forecast by sunday. around the bay, it's a good one. we have temperatures in the low to mid-70s and low to mid-60s at the coast. back to the desk. the national security agency has gathered thousands of baby photos, medical records, resumes and selfies as part of the program. the washington postsaid 90% were used by what it calls oempd american ordinary americans. the post says the information came from edward snowden, the former nsa contractor who sparted releasing -- started releasing classified information last year. the first trial tied to the boston marathon bombings is due to start this morning. a 20-year-old friend of bombing suspect, dzhokhar tsarnaev, is

facing charges of obstruction of justice. he's accused of removing a backpack from dzhokhar tsarnaev's dorm room after the attack. prosecutors say he and another young man grabbed the backpack once they realized that dzhokhar tsarnaev was a suspect in the marathon pomming that killed three -- bombing that killed three people and wounded 260 others. a heroic act ends in tragedy. what a lifeguard was trying to do when he drowned in southern california. also, he was bitten by a great white shark and survived. you are gonna hear how a southern california man fought back to stay alive. ♪

private residence. none of the victims were from the u.s. but shawn o'malley attended the meeting. boston has been at the center of this scandal since it erupted ten years ago. the pope has promised zero- tolerance but this is the first time he's met with any victims since becoming pope. some have criticized him for being slow to react on the issue. an amazing story of survival. we're hearing now from the southern california swimmer bitten by a great white shark. it was all caught on video. >> hey, get out of the water! >> shark! >> i really thought i was seeing my last moments of life. >> that's steve robles. he was swimming saturday at manhattan beach when bitten by a great white shark hooked on a fisherman's line. after the shark started to bite him, he fought back by grabbing his nose and prying his nose off his chest. a teen rushed over to help save

him. robles think that the fisherman used bad judgment. >> knowing there's all of these swimmers, surfers, kids out in the water, he should have cut that line immediately. >> some of the witnesses say that fisherman may have been throwing pieces of fish in the water to lure in sharks which is illegal but officials say they don't think that's the case. lifeguards say it's been more than 100 years since someone has been attacked in los angeles county. a recent survey says a population of these sharks is growing. there are more than 2 hurricane great whites along the california coast. since 1950, there have been 101 great white shark attacks in california. 13 of them were deadly. last year, there were 47 shark attacks in the entire country, only one of them was in california. 7:26. a new legal battle involving a

troubled bay area college. it involves city college of san francisco and a coffee shop. also, two women carrying groceries hit by a car in a particularly dangerous stretch of roadway in san francisco. what the driver is telling police. serious crash on a major road in fremont. why police have made progress. we'll tell you what happened and when southbound traffic is gonna move through here. a hotter day inland shaping up around the bay area. at this hour, i'm tracking clouds. i will show you where the clouds are coming from and what you can expect for the afternoon -- coming up.

a cooldown coming our way. i will show you the extended forecast -- coming up. good morning, sal. good morning. we're looking at a fremont crash on paseo padre which just reopened northbound five minutes ago. southbound lanes are still closed and should stay that way for at least another hour or two. this all happened because of a crash that happened earlier this morning. this pickup truck hit the guardrail, bounced back and hit the tree. the person inside the pickup truck was taken to the hospital with major injuries. southbound paseo parkway is still closed. northbound is open. but it would be a good idea to use another way because of the police investigation. let's take a look now at the bay bridge toll plaza. heavy on 80 getting here and also heavy at the toll plaza. about a 25-minute drive from the toll plaza area across to san francisco. san jose has not become all that bad. 101 is lighter than usual today. likewise for 280 and 85 on the way to the valley. 7:32. back to the desk. two san francisco women

recovering this morning after being hit by a car in the sunset district. it happened just before 9:00 last night at sunset boulevard and moraga street. ktvu's alex savidge joining us live. you are in san francisco to tell us what happened out there, alex. >> reporter: dave, good morning. thankfully both women are expected to survive their injuries. they had both left a nearby supermarket according to police, and that's when they stepped out into this intersection here trying to cross sunset boulevard. we're at moraga street. this is where the crash happened. that's when both women were hit by a car coming up the street. the driver did stay here at the scene and cooperated with police. and the driver simply didn't see the two victims in this case according to investigators. this crash was just before 9:00 last night. the two women were carrying bags full of groceries and many items were thrown across the roadway. there was even a box of cereal sitting on the windshield of

the silver honda terrific. place -- civic. police say this area has seen its share of accidents recently. >> we've had quite a number of accidents on sunset. i can only advise motorists to slow down and pedestrians to not have objects in their hands like cell phones while crossing the street and paying attention. >> reporter: and san francisco is taking steps to curb crashes like this one. last year 21 people were hit and killed while trying to cross. the city has adopted what's called vision zero. it's an effort to end pedestrian deaths through the next ten years through engineering, education and stepped-up enforcement. the accident happened here last night. the women are expected to survive. the driver was allowed to leave the scene but it's possible that person may be cited for failing to yield to those pedestrians. we're live in san francisco,

alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. leading safety group recently gave the city of san francisco a grade of miserable when it comes to pedestrian safety. as you heard alex say, several city agencies have created a program called vision zeer-- zero. it's aimed at ending all deadly accidents in san francisco within the next ten years. a divided jury will resume deliberations today in the civil trial of bryan stow against the los angeles dodgers. >> the focus is on whether the dodgers provided enough security and lighting to keep fans safe. on wednesday, jury members said they may not be able to reach a verdict but the judge told them to keep deliberating. bryan stow was permanently disabled when he was brutally beating in the parking lot of dodgers stadium three years teag. the men who -- ago. the men who beat stow accepted plea deals in january.

the oakland city council is scheduled to meet behind bars closed doors about a lease deal for the as at the coliseum. jean quan and pat concernahan say they want to -- kernahan want to rework the deal approved. it was approved after bud selig indicated he would allow the as to move out of oakland if a deal was not worked out. b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t.'s extension may be delayed to san jose for almost a year. they need to build a trench to prepare for future tracks near interstate 880. it was supposed to take eight months. the vta closed down a small part of dixon landing road during the construction but the city of milpitas didn't want that road shut down during that work. a cord agreed with milpitas.

they said vta leads to leave part of that road open. that adds ten months to the construction schedule. it could push back the first trains operating in santa clara county to 2018. that's almost a year later than originally planned. well, some good news this morning for san francisco drivers. after being closed down for four days, interstate 280 reopened ten hours ahead of schedule. caltrans reopened the freeway last night about 7:00. a portion of the northbound direction had been closed since wednesday night letting crews make seismic upgrades. another closure is scheduled over the labor day weekend. commuters are not looking forward to that. >> traffic is blacked up. we live a couple of blocks away from the exit. you know, they had to go kind of round about way to get to our place. >> about 60,000 commuters use that freeway on a regular weekday. the next closure could also

take about four days again but caltrans is still working out the details. 7:37. city college of san francisco is suing a campus coffee shop for nearly $130,000 in unpaid rent. today's chronicle reports the college evicted the bean scene company from the mission street campus in downtown san francisco in june. that came after years of the coffee shop allegedly ignoring a series of missing lease payments. the college says bean scene owes $127,000 in back rent and other fees. happening today -- people throughout the bay area and across the country are calling on the fda to end its ban on gay men donating blood. it's part of a national gay blood drive day. the fda adopted a ban in 1983 to prevent the spread of a.i.d.s. and h.i.v. it's a policy many say is

outdated due to testing capabilities. there are 60 of these throughout the country. they will write messages and encourage to sign a petition. the democrat democrat from los angeles is battling betty yee for second place to advance to the general election for secretary of state. perez trails yee. the mayor of fresno finished first in the primary. any registered voter can ask for a recount but that person has to foot the bill. this week, president obama will pace more pressure to help settle the immigration crisis at the texas border as he flies to texas for three fund-raisers and a speech that focuses on

the economy. texas governor rick perry said the president should take some time to get a firstthan look at the crisis -- firsthand look at the crisises of thousands of children flooding across the border. last week, a white house spokesman left the door open for a possible addition to the texas travel schedule. israel arrested six suspects in connection with the pruttal kitting of a 16 16- year-old palestinian boy. he was kidnapped and burned alive last wednesday. it's believed to be a revenge killing for the earlier kidnapping and killings of three israeli teenagers. today, netanyahu telephoned the father of the palestinian teenager and said the killing was abhorrent and said the people will be brought who are

berryessa. the fire is near state highway 128 in solano and yolo counties near the southeast shore of the lake. pam cook is in the studio to explain why this is difficult to fight. >> good morning. the hot weather has had the biggest impact on the fire and the winds. still bumping near the monticello dam, which is right where solano, napa and yolo counties all meet. that fire started friday night. it's burned nearly 6500 acres. it's still threatening 40 homes. now, the drought has created some dangerous conditions and firefighters say it is a tough fight because of the fire's location. >> not only are we in steep, rugged terrain, very difficult access to get to. but combined with the triple digit figures, low humidity, it makes it a very challenging environment for firefighters to work aggressively all day and all night. >> one firefighter was injured when the bulldozer he was using to clear a fire lane overturned.

we just learned that possibly two other firefighters might have some minor injuries as well. the fire just got an update, still is only about 35% contained now and highway 128 still closed except to people who live there, 128 in that area. we also just checked with calfire for an update, they tell us that everyone was allowed back into their homes last night by about 8:00 but they still are considered threatened because the firefighters are worried about a shift in the winds. we're keeping aeye on that. in our -- an eye on that. in our next hour of "mornings on 2," we'll hear from some of the people forced to leave. tori? >> thank you, pam. several people in the bay area suffered severe injuries from illegal fireworks over the 4th of july weekend. san jose police say a man in his 40s lost his his hand when an illegal fire work exploded prematurely late on the 4th of july. two men in sunnyvale were also injured by illegal fireworks.

the men, ages 41 and 32, both lost fingers and parts of their hands. also a san francisco man was seriously injured lighting illegal fireworks on folsom street on the 4th of july. in tennessee, a fireworks story went up in flames. more than a dozen people were inside the store when the fire started yesterday afternoon but they all got out safely. witnesses say they saw fire worth shooting off as the fire -- fireworks shooting off as the store burned down. the cause is still under investigation. the oakland as have the best record in baseball. next week they are gonna send six players to the all-star game. con donnellson, cashmere doolittle brandon moss and the catcher. the as pitcher was named to the national legal all-star team after being treated on friday

a lifeguard in southern california drowned while trying to rescue a swimmer. 32-year-old ben carlson went into the water at newport beach to help save a swimmer caught in six to eight had the foot surf -- eight-foot surf. while in the water, they were both hit by a large wave. other lifeguards were able to save the swimmer but cannot find carlson. three hours later, they found his body. >> ben was a well-respected individual, always a nice guy, always there to help somebody. he would give the shirt off his back at any time. it's an utter tragedy to lose a man of that caliber. >> carlson had been a lifeguard at newport beach for 15 years. this was the first time in 100 years newport beach lost a lifeguard. a reminder of about how dangerous the life can be. >> what a sad story, tc. still ahead -- combining cat adoptions with a cup of

three people were killed after the small plane they were in crashed in riverside county. the single engine plane went down shortly after 9:00 a.m. yesterday morning in the mountains above lake elsinore. the plane made a sharp turn and clipped a tree, breaking off a wing. it then fell into a ravine. the nails of those killed in the crash have not been re-- names of those killed have not been released. one of them is a 32-year-old man from irvine. the other victims were said to be the father and uncle. testimony in the murder trial of oscar pistorius

resumes this morning. hours ago, the chief prosecutor challenged the credibility of a physician who testified for the defense. now, that doctor testified that the double amputee runner has an anxious nature lidge -- linked to his disability. oscar pistorius admits he killed his girlfriend but claims the deadly shooting was a tragic mistake. the prosecution says he intentionally killed her after they had an argument. another trial begins today to determine whether shelley sterling has the right to negotiate the $2 billion sale of the los angeles clippers. she did that when her esstranged husband was -- estrainged husband was -- estrainged husband was banned from the nba. shelley sterling removed him from control of the family trust that owns the clippers. the trial has put that sale on hold. if the sale is not completed by september 15th, the nba says it

brentwood. i think you will hit 100, brentwood. the heat will be leaving. i'm tracking a cooling trend in the extended cooling forecast. good morning sal. we're looking at a fremont crash that has cleared up somewhat. but fremont police are doing an investigation. southbound which is the westbound area is still closed but northbound has opened. you can see the pickup truck that was involved in this crash, halved after 1:35 -- happened after 12:35 this morning. ran over a guardrail and hit a tree. the person in the truck was seriously injured. avoid paseo padre and sequoia. you can get around paseo padre just after a couple blocks from sequoia. good idea to avoid the area. let's take a look at now at a different picture. this is the south bay. you can see traffic here is going to be busy as you drive

on 101. but it's only busy in mountain view. and b.a.r.t., caltrain and muni, not reporting any major delays. i want to mention the bay bridge toll plaza has lightened up quite a bit. you can see a little bit on the side. if you are driving through, it's light getting into san francisco. that's about a ten-minute drive time. let's go back to the desk. 8:02. 8:03. we're following developing news in los gatos where an award- winning restaurant has been destroyed by an early-morning fire. janine de la vega joins us live from los gatos to show us the damage and also tell us what this restaurant means to people there. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. well, customers who have been watching the fire on the news are actually coming down to see what the restaurant looks like in person. they are just shaking their heads. this is the service and kitchen area where you can see the heaviest damage, especially to the roof. this is a michelin star restaurant that's world

renowned for its fine dining. here is video of the fire showing the flames and smoke engulfing the restaurant which is located in downtown los gatos. someone driving by spotted the fire at 4:00 a.m. and called 911. crews were able to get here quickly. during the firefight, they saw the gas meter was in flames. it's unknown if that's where the fire started. the restaurant was vacant. it closed for the 4th of july and it was set to reopen this wednesday. so it could have a thorough cleaning. that won't happen now. customers are shocked andthy feel for the owner and chef, david kinch. >> devastate,ing, yes -- devastating, yes. it's the finest eating establishment in town. hopefully we won't lose it. if they can rebuild, it will be okay. >> reporter: during the firefight a fireman fell over debris inside the restaurant and suffered a chest injury. he was taken to the hospital and is said to be okay. the dining room is intact but

there's smoke and water damage. the back and the roof has the most destruction. as far as the investigation goes, investigators will be going in there later on to take a look and look for any signs of exactly which room the fire started in. as of this point, the cause is unknown. now, this restaurant has been rated one of the top ten in america. the owner and the chef, david kinch, is flying back from new york and is supposed to be here sometime this afternoon. at this point, employees and staff aren't able to go on camera. we're trying to find out plans about rebuilding. but just still some very tough news and heartbreaking for them as they stand around here looking at the building. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:05. san francisco police are looking for clues in a deadly shooting. it happened around 3:00 this morning in the city's sunnyvale

neighborhood. the shooting woke up many neighbors. many thought the gunfire was fireworks. police say the victim was a man in his early 20s. el alex savidge spoke to one -- alex savidge spoke to one neighbor who knew the victim. >> good young man. used to pick up his children at the teen center every day. any time i needed him to help me do some work, he always helped and didn't ask for money. a fun-loving guy. i calls -- i just saw him up there. >> police are still looking for suspects. passengers on some international flights heading to the u.s., you will now be scped to turn on your cell phones and other electronics to prove they are not a bomb. if the cell phone, tablet or laptop won't power up, it won't be allowed on the plane. the passenger may have to go through more screening. all of this follows reports that terrorists are developing more sophisticated bombs designed to get past airport

security. >> we continually evaluate the world situation and we know that there remains a terrorist threat to the united states and aviation security is a large part of that. >> now, the new security measures will focus primary only on -- primary on airports in the -- primarily on airports in the midwest and europe. brian flores live now at sfo to tell us about this small but possibly dangerous threat. some people say they didn't know they were carrying it. what's going on? >> reporter: hi, good morning. they are called credit card knives. as the name suggests, they are the size of a credit card. they are pretty dangerous. but here's the thing -- the tsa says screeners have seen an increase in passengers carrying they. they are also pretty -- they. they are also pretty -- them. they are also pretty hard to defect. these knives can fit in your

wallet. many people send to forget they have it. they are thicker than the size of a credit card. they come in different designs and shapes you bit it becomes a knife once it is folded out. according to the l.a. times, the tsa has confiscated nearly 500 credit card knives on passengers. that ates to 20 -- equates to 20 per week. 61 niches were found at airports nationwide. ten recovered at sfo. and then just last week. 30 were uncovered again at airports nationwide and once again, ten were found at sfo. passengers we spoke with this morning feel safe but they are a little bit concerned. >> sounds kind of dangerous. pretty much everybody has credit cards. so that seems like something that could be a problem or could be eliminated by technology. and that's something that's kind of scary to me because everybody has one. >> reporter: now, these knives can be bought online and are

spliced anywhere between $-- priced anywhere between $3 and $10. the tsa is unclear why there's an uncease. if you are caught having one of these, the tsa says you will be 0 asked to turn it over -- asked to turn it over. you can give it to a friend or turn it over or check it in with your bag. they say there isn't a specific group carrying the knives. the tsa says you could face a civil penalty if you are caught with one, however. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. 8:09. a man working at the alameda county fair is now in custody after reportedly soliciting teenaged girls for the pornography industry. 16-year-old justice told police that a man approached her after her mother and brother went to get a drink of water while they were at the fair. she says the man handed her a card with the name big pimpin, incorporated on it. the card also says be a star

and offers a signing bonus for an 18th birthday contract. >> he like asked if i was 18. i said no, i'm 16. he kind of fought about it and said call -- thought about it and said call me when you are 18. >> they reported the incident to the man of the fair grounds and 34-year-old aaron gimbert was arrested. managers of the fair say gimbert is not a regular fairgrounds employee but was a contract employee for the carnival. tesla wants to study the remnants of a stolen model s sedan that split in half and bushed after a high-speed chase in los angeles over the holiday weekend. according to bloomberg, tesla is working with los angeles investigators on this. the crash happened on friday after the car was stolen from a dealership in west los angeles. the driver crashed into several cars and a light pole. no one was seriously hurt. now, authorities are investigating the cause of another fiery crash involving a tesla in palmdale just a couple

of hours later. the chp says a speeding tesla rear ended a toyota carrying a family of five. that toyota burst into flames. two children and one adult were killed. the man driving that tesla was not hurt. now, the safety of tesla cars bail an issue this year after two fires were reported in the battery packs of the cars. since then, tesla has added a titanium plate to strengthen the casing that protects the battery. the first trial tied to the boston marathon bombings is due to start this morning. a 20-year-old friend of bombing suspect, dzhokhar tsarnaev, is facing construction of justice charges. he's accused of removing a backpack from dzhokhar tsarnaev's college dorm room after the attacks. prosecutors say he and another young man grabbed the backpack once they realized that dzhokhar tsarnaev was a suspect in the bombing that killed three people and wounded 260

others. 8:11. two san francisco women, rushed to the hospital after a trip to the grocery store. coming up at 8:30, what a driver told police after his car hit those women and the growing push to keep pedestrians safe. but first, a woman punched several times by a chp officer. the new questions being raised as the agency launches its own investigation. good morning. we're still looking at a commute that is busy in some areas and lighter in others. as you can see at the bay bridge toll plaza, we've cleared out. but there's another commute that seems to be taking its place. our bay area heatup will hit its peak this afternoon. i will line up the temperatures and give you a look at what's going on out there this morning. a mix of low clouds, mid and high level clouds. we'll explain where those are coming from -- coming up.

8:15. today, a civil rights group plans to meet with chp officials in los angeles to talk about this incident right here. why a chp officer beat a woman in the middle of a busy freeway. it happened tuesday along the santa monica freeway. someone in a passing car took video of the incident which has gone viral. it shows the chp officer repeatedly punching marlene pinnic and her family plans to sue the chp. >> he punched and pound and pound on her. the only thing she could do was block her face. >> she got beat. she got savagely beat by

someone who seemed like he was trying out for mixed martial arts. it's absolutely unacceptable. >> the chp did not identify the officer but said he has been put on paid administrative leave. the investigation continues into a shooting in hollister that injured three people. police say the shooting happened yesterday morning about 10:30 at the chevron station on san felipe road. when officers arrived, they found three people with gunshot wound and a fourth person attacked. investigators say it appears the incident started the night before between two rival motorcycle clubs at a hollister rally. police are reviewing surveillance video and say they've recovered a lot of evidence. a big earthquake this morning that killed at least two people, rocked parts of southern mexico and central america. it was a 6.9 magnitude quake. it hit about four hours ago. it was centered off the coast

of mexico, 20 miles on the border with guatemala. this new photo was posted on twitter by firefighters in guatemala. this is in san marcos. incredible. it shows just some of the damage caused by this morning's quake. there are other reports, several homes were destroyed in both guatemala and mexico. pope francis met today with six victims of the church sex abuse scandal. the pope according to reports begged for forgiveness for the church leaders' failure to handle the cases. the meeting was at the pope's private residence at the vatican. son of these sex abuse victims -- none of these sex abuse victims were from the united states. but sean o'malley was there. boston has been at the center of the abuse scandal. the pope has promised steer row tolerance. this is the -- zero-tolerance. this is the first time he's met with any victims since he became pope. some people have criticized him for being slow to react on this issue. 8:17. want to check in with sal who

said traffic has been heavy in some areas, better in others. how is 880? >> it's a little slow. 880 was fine until now. you can see it's slow here as you drive past the coliseum. remember, tonight, the giants will travel to oakland to play the as, it's a very popular series. fans from both sides will crowd to the kol low she -- coliseum. the beast way to get there, b.a.r.t -- best way to get there, b.a.r.t. if you are just driving through, be aware that people start to show up early for the game. it will be going on. there will be a couple of games at the coliseum and a couple of games at at&t park. there's a little bit of backup this this air -- in this area. the eastshore freeway has been slow. we had a few crashes. still a 38-minute drive time

between the carquinez bridge and the macarthur maze. let's go to rosemary. a minor warmup. in addition to the low clouds along the coastline, just inside the bay. take a look at that beautiful view over the east bay hills. these clouds are pulling in from the desert southwest. monsoonal moisture wrapping around the high pressure and swinging into california. so along the sierra, even the possibility of thunderstorms in the forecast for today. for us, we'll be between a mix of sun and clouds and in addition to that warm weather for our inland communities, it could feel sticky with this added moisture. now, in our neighborhood for the next day, maybe two. 60s and cloudy, along the coast. areas like pacifica and half moon bay. a little change in the forecast for you. we'll be comfortable around the bay. mid-70s to mid-80s. inland areas mid- to upper 90s. a few areas topping out at 100 for the afternoon. temperatures right now, in the mid-50s. santa rosa, upper 50s san francisco. oakland, concord, checking in at 64 in san jose.

it is 8:24. it is an amazing story of survival. we're hearing from the southern california swimmer who was bitten by a great white shark and it was all caught on video. >> hey, get out of the water! >> shark! >> i really thought i was seeing my last moments of life. >> steve robles was swimming saturday at manhattan beach when he was bitten by a great white shark hooked on a fisherman's line. after the shark started biting him, robles fought back, grabbing the shark's nose to pry the shark's mouth off his chest. a teenager with a surfboard

rushed into the water to save robles. robles thinks the fiverman who hook -- fisherman who hooked the shark used bad judgment. >> knowing there are all of these swimmers, surfers, kids out in the water, he should have cut that line immediately. >> some witnesses say the fisherman may have been throwing pieces of fish in the water to attract sharks which is illegal. but officials don't think that is the case. lifeguards say it had been more than a hundred years since someone has been attacked by a shark in los angeles county. a recent study shows the population of great white sharks is growing here in california. right now, there are more than 2,000 great white sharks along the coast. according to the state department of fish and wildlife, since 1950, there have been 101 great white shark attacks in california. 13 of them were deadly and last year, there were 47 shark attacks in the u.s. only one of

those was in california. all right, tc. 8:25. a big meeting today for the owners of the drake's bay oyster company still fighting to stay in business. lawyers for the oyster company meet today with a judge about last week's supreme court decision to not hear the company's appeal. drake's been fighting the eviction from the point reyes national seashore since 2012. lower courts have allowed the company to keep operating through this appeals process. well, the city of oakland could soon be home to the first permanent cat cafe in the nation. cattown cafe has signed a lease on a space at broadway and 29th. it's expected to open sometime in september. the idea is to have a cafe where people can interact with cats and hopefully adopt some of them. you are looking at video from a cat cafe in new york. this is back in april sponsored by purina. it was only a temporary exhibit.

88 vallejo. 99 in antioch for the afternoon. brentwood, not on this graphic but 100 degrees expected for brentwood. the good news, if this is too much to bear, i have a cooling trend to show you in the extended forecast coming up. good morning, sal. >> good morning. we are still looking at pretty heavy commute on the eastshore freeway, this is because of earlier problems. about 38 minutes. haven't seen a time like this for a little bit between the carquinez bridge and the macarthur maze. i have good news when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, the traffic is lighter than usual although there is a little bit of a delay. there was a stalled truck up on the bridge. they pushed it off and that caused the delay. it had gone completely light but now the metering lights are back on and things are slowing down again. i do want to mention as i move the -- to the maps here that southbound 880 traffic looks good. northbound 17 traffic is okay. we had an earlier accident in the los gatos area. we've had a couple of minor things go on there. but so far, the traffic in san

jose area has been just better than it normally is. 8:32. back to the desk. sal, thank you. two women recovering in san francisco after being hit by a car last night in the sunset district. ktvu's alex savidge joining us live to tell us why some of the neighbors say they are not surprised by this crash. >> reporter: good morning. neighbors say you really do have to be cautious crossing sunset boulevard even if you are in the crosswalk. this area has seen its share of crashes recently. last night, police say two women who left a nearby supermarket stepped into the street and they were both hit by a car. this morning they are both hospitalized with injuries. but they are expected to survive. this crash happened before 9:00 last night. it was at the intersection at sunset and morago. the person behind the wheel cooperated with police. the driver simply didn't see the two victims according to investigators. those two women were carrying

bags full of groceries. many of the items were thrown across the board. there was even a box of cereal sitting on the windshield of this silver honda civic involved in the crash. one woman we talked to said crossing the street in this area can be dangerous and this crash is proof of that. >> it's very disturbing, you know, it could be someone we know. even though it's someone we don't know -- it's very scary. it could be pretty dangerous. there is too traffic and sometimes they don't stop for the pedestrians. >> reporter: and san francisco is taking steps to curb crashes like this one. last year, 21 people were hit and killed by cars trying to cross the streets in the city. san francisco has adopted vision zero. now, as for the accident here at this intersection here last night, police say it's possible the driver could be cited. the two women hit by that car are expected to fully recover.

>> we're live in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. 8:34. good news for you san francisco drivers. after being closed down for four days, interstate 280 reopened ten hours ahead of schedule. caltrans reopened the freeway last night just before 7:00. part of the northbound direction had been closed since wednesday night for a seismic upgrade. another closure is set for the labor day holiday weekend and commuters are not looking forward to that. >> the traffic was really backed up. we live a couple of blocks away from the exit. so, you know, they had to go kind of in a round about way to get to our place. >> about 60,000 commuters use the freeway on an average week dey. the next closure may also last four days but caltrans is still working out the details. 8:35. the b.a.r.t. extension to san jose may be delayed for almost a year.

the valley transit authority needs to build a trench to prepare for future b.a.r.t. tracks under dixon landing road in milpitas that's near 880. it was supposed to take eight months with vta closing down a small part of dixon landing road during that construction. but the city of milpitas did not want dixon landing road shut down during the work. a court agreed with milpitas saying vta needs to leave part of the road open and that adds ten months to the construction schedule and it could push back the first b.a.r.t. trains operating in santa clara county to the near 2018. that's nearly a year later than originally planned. happening today -- people throughout the bay area and across the country are calling on the food and drug administration to end its ban on gay men donating blood. it's part of a national gay blood drive day. the fda adopted a ban in 1983 to prevent the spread of

a.i.d.s. and h.i.v. it's a policy many say it now updated due to improved hiv testing capabilities. there are 60 blood drives organized across the country where gay and bisexual men are being encouraged to bring someone who can donate blood in their place. they will write messages to the fda and be encouraged to sign a white house petition. a veteran southern california lifeguard drowned yesterday trying to rescue a swimmer. 32-year-old ben carlson went into the water in newport beach to save a swimmer. while they were in the water, both were hit by a big wave. other lifeguards were able to save the swimmer but they couldn't find carlson. three hours later, they found his body. >> ben was a well-respected individual, always a nice guy. always was there to help somebody. he would give the shirt off his back at any time. it's just an utter tragedy to lose a man of that caliber.

carlson had been a lifeguard at newport beach for 15 years. this was the first time in 100 years newport beach lost a lifeguard. israel arrested six suspects in connection with the brutal killing last week of a 16-year-old palestinian boy. -month-old kader was kidnapped and burned alive while -- mohammed kader was kidnapped and burned alive last week. it's believed to be a revenge killing. today, netanyahu telephoned the father of the teenager saying the killing was abhorrent and promised the people responsible will be brought to trial. a 15-year-old american cousin of the slain palestinian teenager was released from a jerusalem jail said. his face badly bruised after being attacked last year. he's visiting from florida. cell phone video shows masked men in uniform beating him

during a protest over his cousin's death. his parents believe the men are israeli police. >> the group of people and then they came from the side of me and i tried to run away. but they attacked me. >> israeli police say the teen was taking part in violence against israeli troops and was carrying a slingshot. he was been ordered to remain under house arrest for nine days. they say the u.s. is profoundly troubled by the alleged police beatings. the deliberations lee suped for a -- resume for a divided trial in the civil trial of bryan stow against the l.a. dodgers. the focus is on whether the dodgers provided enough security and lighting to keep fans safe. on wednesday, jury members said they may not be able to reach a verdict but the judge told them to keep deliberating. brian stow was permanently disabled when he was brutally beaten in the parking lot of dodger stadium three years ago. the men who beat stow accepted plea deals back in february.

if the jury can't reach a verdict, a mistrial will be declared. the oakland city council scheduled to meet today behind closed doors about the fate of a ten-year stadium lease deal for the oakland as at the coliseum. mayor quan and pat kernighan say they want to rework a deal already approved by the authority. it was approved after bud selig indicated he would allow the as to move out of oakland if a deal was not worked out. 20 minutes before 9:00. the chp is accepting applications for new hires. they are looking to hire ka kets. the -- cadets. the application started 30 minutes ago. you must be between 20 and 35 years old, have no felony convictions and pass a physical and written test. all right, tori.

the carnival. san francisco police busy looking for suspects in a deadly shooting. it happened about 3:00 this morning in the sunnyvale neighborhood. it woke up many of the neighbors who initially thought it was fireworks. police say the victim was a man in his early 20s. a well-known famous restaurant destroyed in an early-morning fire here in the bay area. the restaurant was empty at the time but a firefighter was injured battles the flames. janine de la vega has been at the scene since early this morning. you are also getting reaction from long time customers among many others. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this is a michelin star restaurant. it's fine dining. it's a place where people come to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. you are looking at the back of it right now. they just put up this tape. an investigator that you see there is about to head in there and take a look around. now, most of the damage here is

structural and it is to the roof. we're told that the dining area is intact. this video taken early this morning shows the flames and smoke ripping through the restaurant located in downtown los gatos. someone passing by spotted the fire at 4:00 a.m. and called 911. crews were able to get here quickly. the restaurant was vacant. we're told it closed for the 4th of july and was set to reopen this wednesday to have a thorough cleaning. now, that won't happen now. investigators will be looking to see what caused this fire to start. >> it would be to speculate that the fire started outside because the first visual was the gas meter was involved. fire going up the wall into the attic. you just never know. something could have been on top, dropped down, might have been a person that walked by saw something, someone threw a

cigarette, minor gas leak somewhere. >> reporter: a fireman fell over debris inside the restaurant and suffered a chest injury. he was taken to the hospital and is said to be okay. while the front of the restaurant was not destroyed, there is water and smoke damage there in the dining area. investigators, again, we just saw are right now looking around the building looking for signs of where this fire started. the restaurant has been rated one of the top ten restaurants in america. the owner and chef david kinch is on his way back from new york. we're told he's in shock. employees told us off camera that they are heartbroken. right now we saw a fencing company come here and they are about to put a chain-link fence around this to keep people away. throughout the morning we've seen many customers come back. they are looking at the building and basically just shaking their heads in disbelief. reporting live from los gatos, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. we haven an update on the -- we have an update on the

fire burning near lake berryessa. pam cook is in the newsroom with some good news. >> the good news, everybody who lives near the fire was allowed back in their homes around 8:00 last night. firefighters are still worried about a shift in the winds. now, we want to show you some new photos from alameda county fire this morning. they have sent several strike teams from the fire in napa county which is winding down now. they sent them over to the fire near lake berryessa. we checked with calfire. the canyon creek campground along highway 128 is still under investigation. the road is also still closed unless you live in the area. now, the hot weather has had the biggest impact hon the fire which is still -- on the fire which is still burning near the monticello dam. that's where solano, napa and yolo counties meet. >> we didn't really realize right away.

>> calfire says there's a lot of smoke in the area. the fire started friday night. it's burned nearly 6500 acres. this morning, at last check, it's 35% contained. today is going to be the hottest day of the week as the temperatures cool down. firefighters hope they will be able to make more progress during this fire and containing the fire. right now it's a tough fight. dave and pam? >> thank you. let's bring sal back. you still keeping an eye on 880? >> that's right. i want to mention that 880 has been going up and down. in the last hour we've had some slow traffic there. i want to take a look at it. you can see traffic here on 880. i think we have it for you. maybe we don't. that's right. this is the paseo padre crash. i went out of order here. northbound is open. southbound is closed. all of the police investigators seem to have left the scene. but that vehicle was there. i'm not sure what's going on. we'll find out soon. it looks like more

investigators are showing up here still closed. let's take a look at the east bay. you can see slow traffic on 880. and at the bay bridge toll plaza, it is backed up for about a five-minute delay at the toll plaza, ten minute drive time. let's go to rosemary. in addition to a warmer day sort of an interesting day, giving you a live look over the bay, you can see in addition to low clouds in the bay up against the coast, patchy fog reported in half moon bay. mid-level clouds and above that high level clouds. those mid and high level clouds parking a little bit of moisture. take a look. so the ridge of high pressure still in control of our weather pattern. the circulation around that high pressure pushing some monsoonal moisture into the bay area, stretches from across nevada and through the sierra today, possibility of thunderstorms in the forecast. moves to the central valley and is right here in the bay area. this is gonna be the case over the course of today as well as the possibility there with us for tomorrow. in addition to the warmup, it

feel humid. the low clouds hugging the coastline once again for today. it will be cool there. but notice the clouds continuing to stream in. they thin out at times. thicken up. once again and there again the possibility of thunderstorms over the sierra. as we get into the evening hours, they are still coming. this lightning the scenario toeferrer the next -- this will be the scenario over the next day or two. already 71 in antioch. here is a look at afternoon highs for today. low 60s in pacifica. cloudy, cool there. upper 60s san francisco. 78 in oakland. if you are going to see the as game later this evening, low 70s at game time and is slipping in the 60s but here's where it's been baking for the past few days and will continue to do so. 99 in antioch. 99 for livermore. in the extended forecast, i have a cooldown for you. temperatures will drop. low 90s in the forecast for our inland cities. low 70s around the bay.

8:54. a near-miss at an airport in spain over the weekend caught on camera. the video was captured and posted to youtube by an aviation enthusiast. it's been viewed 3.5 million times. it showed a russian jet coming in from for a landing at the airport in barcelona. as it approaches, a plane from argentinas the runway right in its path. as you can see, the russian jet pulls up and aborts the landing at the last minute. it landed safely after ward. an airport official said there was not any risk of the two planes colliding despite what the video shows. a matter of perception depth there. work on the new dam at the reservoir has turned up a treasure of fossils. it's east of milpitas.
