[ indiscernible ] >> h good guy -- good guy. good guy. family guy. >> we are all family run businesses and we are all close. >> i have been here 10 years and there have been 10 robberies. >> reporter: the guy in the get away car is on the loose. the mustang stolen, found about a mile from the jewelry store. he wasn't in it but there was blood in it and police believe he was wounded. he is african american, large build, in his 20s. a year ago almost to the day this same store was robbed and he shot back again. those suspects got away but

they were arrested off the freeway. this time again a suspect is still on the loose. we will monitor the situation and bring you updates as they happen. reporting live, debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. traffic is still a mess on highway 17 in the south bay after a big rig lost control on the steep and windy road. the truck smashed into 10 cars. some were barely recognizable afterwards. one person was also killed. tonight the truck driver is talking about the moments just before the impact. the crash happened on highway 17 between san jose and santa cruz before 8:00 a.m. this morning. ktvu's ann rubin has ben on the scene. -- been on the scene. >> the last of the vehicles has been towed and they are expecting to open the lanes anymore -- to open the lanes any minute. traffic in both directions were devorted all afternoon -- diverted all afternoon as they try determine what happened

here and what made the driver lose control. >> one by one he hit them. a total of 10 cars as the tractor-trailer went out of control. >> seemed like it was in slow motion. >> reporter: he was behind the wheel of the big rig. saw traffic slowing and realized he couldn't stop. >> i can't hit the cars. i can't hit the cars. i have to do something about it. >> reporter: she jammed on the breaks -- he jammed on the breaks. >> it was too steep. there is a 6% grade on highway 17 and the trailers were fully loaded with dirt. he has been a truck driver for not quite three months but his training helped him know what to do next. [ indiscernible ] >> i hit the rail. i can stop myself. that is why i stopped. >> reporter: a 26-year-old was killed in the crash.

the driver crashed his car into another vehicle at 10:30 a.m. this morning. you can see here the driver also took out a wooden fence. the man driving the car that was hit and a boy in the car were taken to the hospital. their injuries are not life threatening. one year after a disappearance her father is dead from suicide and what happened to her is still a mystery. the family is marking thenivorous with a -- the anniversary with a candlelight vigil. ktvu's katy eustis with what might be movement in the case. >> family is starting to arrive. we are an hour out from the vigil. the police department forwarded their investigation to the district attorney's office. exactly what that means officers would not elaborate on but it is movement in the case of the missing toddler.

>> reporter: another mystery surrounding the death. her father. he committed suicide in may. we spoke with the coroner's office which is not releasing the cause of the death yet. he reported her missing a year ago today. he parked at a store at 79th and international. he left the 21-month-old girl in the car with his mother who suffers from dementia. he told police when he returned from the store she was gone. there was an extensive search of the area. at one point police released suspect information of a woman seen with a baby matching the description. investigators arrested him on suspicion of child endangerment but charges were never files. the grandparents say his death has only pushed them further from the answers they seek.

lead singer was alix tichelman's boyfriend till he died. the cause of death was unclear. possibly a heart attack. alix tichelman was with her at the time. here is her 911 call. >> my boyfriend over dosed or something. he won't respond. and he is just laying on the ground. i don't know. >> reporter: he died of an over dose. 911 conversation continued with alix tichelman sounding sure of what happened. >> why do you think it is on over dose? >> um, because that is -- there is nothing else it could be. i know that for a fact. >> accidental or intentional? >> accidental. accidental. >> reporter: at the time alix tichelman did not tell police she administered the heroin which she now admitted to police. it is also what killed forest hayes two months later. police are taking a second look at his death.

>> just looking at the similarities of the two situations. we will go back and look at it and make sure that everything that we determine to be correct almost a year ago is still factual and accurate. >> investigators also said today alix tichelman's searched for how to defend herself after giving a lethal dose of heroin. they met through seeking arrangement.com. the site released a statement saying it does not allow prostitution and we are shocked to learn of this tragedy and would like to convey our sympathies to the family. and here is a police report from georgia before the death in which alix tichelman accused him of domestic violence. after interviewing both of them, the officer arrested alix tichelman for biting him. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. a man is ceptanced to 15 -- sentenced to 15 years in prison

for selling company secrets to the chinese. he was arrested for selling the recipe for white pigment. it is used from paint to paper and brings in $17 billion in annual sales. he was also fined $28 million, which is the amount he took from chinese companies that bought the information. the aclu and other groups said in san francisco they are challenging the obama administration over the national suspicious activity reporting initiative. they say the federal government has been treating people like suspected terrorist when they be done nothing wrong. one man said he was questioned about supposed statements he made because he converted to islam. >> i have no idea to what they could be referring to. one of the offenses said he did

not want me to become the next 9/11 hijackers. >> the attorneys say that information on innocent people get swept into databases and sometimes can lead to fbi action. one man was stabbed, another assaulted inside a restaurant because of a fight to help a woman. it started with a altercation between a man and a woman. a second man stepped in and a fight began. the man who intervened was assaulted and his friend was stabbed when he tried to help. police say there are 5 suspects in the incident but at this point no arrests. police are looking for whoever broke into couple's home while they were asleep and robbed them yesterday morning. investigators say the burglar hopped a gate and got into the home by removing a screen. the couple remained asleep and didn't realize they were robbed

their obligation to report suspicions of child abuse directly to law enforcement. law makers are showing support for the arts with a budget increase. the director said the budget signed by governor jerry brown doubled their budget to $10 million. they support a variety of projects from public television to art classes for incarcerated teens help get them back on the right path. just last year a 2 million one time contribution from the state assembly allowed them to fund 32 projects in 43 counties. medical marijuana supporters rallied today outside san jose city hall to protest new limits going into effect. the restrictions on where medical marijuana clubs can operate in the city will cause more than 70 of them to shut down on july 18. the restrictions are included in an ordinance approved by the
