>> ktvu channel 2 news starts right now, with breaking news. >> that breaking news is in fairfield, crews are getting the upper hand on a grass fire that forced residents out of their homes. i am ken wayne. >> i am heather holmes. the fire grew to four alarms. it burned on highway 12. both lanes of the freeway were shirt down for some time but within the last hour some lanes were reopened to traffic. we have live team coverage. meteorologist mark tamayo is tracking the conditions but we begin with ktvu's cara liu who is learning new information about the evacuations. >> the weather conditions posed a challenge for firefighters out here in fairfield today. it took 2-1/2 hours to get the fire under control. and right now they are ballparking it at 10 achesser. it started -- acres.

it started about 2:00 p.m. there is a lot of dry grass, temperatures were in the 90s. there were homes nearby. the fire did jump to the north side of highway 12. firefighters did bump this up to a four alarm fire enlisting the help of a strike team as well as a half dozen other area fire departments wanting to know as many resources on it as possible. 20 homes on james street were revacuated at one point for a -- evacuated at one point for a while. >> dry grass. very fast spread of fire right now. this year. just with the drought conditions. we -- we bumped up our first alarm. we added more engines and it still wasn't enough. it spotted a quarter mile. which is uncharacteristic and with the winds fires move very

fast. >> reporter: 30 minutes ago we saw firefighters rush out to a spot fire on the south side of highway 12 but they got that under control. firefighters are still investigating the cause. we did see a homeless camp close to the edge of the fire. firefighters so far have not said if that has anything to do with the fire. but a section of highway 12 was shut down for more than an hour. the westbound lanes are now back up. one of the eastbound lanes has just opened within the last hour. cara liu, ktvu channel 2 news. >> ktvu's meteorologist mark tamayo is tracking the conditions that the firefighters are up against. >> how is it looking for the firefighters? >> still hot out there. whenever you hear of a fire in fairfield you get nervous

setting off a wildfire. freddie alexander smoke was booked yesterday on felony channels that he caused a fire and -- charges that he caused a fire. the fire started friday afternoon in a dry wooded area southwest of redding. 3,000 acres burned and it is only 10% contained. firefighters say the suspect caused the fire when exhaust from his truck ignited dry grass. protest ended peacefully with no arrests. >> 100 people marched yesterday to protest the district attorney's decision not to prosecute erik gelhaus, the deputy who shot and killed andy lopez. at one point 20 of the protesters marched on to a freeway off ramp but they were corralled off safely. the district attorney said the decision not to file charnels
