about the two people shot. >> we are live in palo alto where police say they need your help to find a man that attacked a woman in a park. >> a fast moving fire in fairfield became dangerously close to home. the big question forecasts hope to answer today about how it may have started. the morning news continues. good morning. you are looking live in palo alto. this is where police continue to look for a man accused of harassing and groping a woman in a city park. coming up in three minutes, ktvu katie utehs will have a look at the sketch of the man police are look for. thank you for joining us. monday morning, july 14th i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve, you have a tricky forecast. people don't know how to dress. >> dress cool if you are inland.

if you're by the coast it will be pretty nice there. there is some areas of thick fog. other than that most of the coast is clear. it's higher clouds. we are between. there are some to the north. not many. temperatures you warmed it up yesterday. they will continue that theme today. livermore 94-98. east san jose 84-90. the key is the coast is even though it's clear, it will not be that warm. there is no offshore breeze. we will go 72 in san francisco. although it is mostly clear it will be a nice, nice day. here is the cloud cover i'm worried about. if these take the turn i think south bay and peninsula could see a lot of these clouds. but as it is, we will start off with 60s for many and end up with 90-100s away. under mostly sunny skies in the morning. don't be surprised. yes, that all add humidity. kind of a muggy feel temperatures anywhere from 60s and 70s by the beaches. 80s around the bay. here is sal. all right.

we are still look at a commute that is getting busier although we haven't had any major collisions in the main part of the commute. right now traffic is getting busy for example at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's also going to be a little bit slow on the livermore valley commute. this is one of the slowest commutes and the traffic continues to be slow. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. i want to show you traffic is going to be slow here if you are driving into san francisco. it's about a 15-20 minute delay if you're at the very end of the line to cross the entire bridge into san francisco. and we continue to watch the south bay where most of the freeways in san jose, santa clara valley are doing well. let's go back to the desk. we are beginning our 6:00 hour with developing news. police in vallejo investigating a deadly shooting. there is still a lot of unanswered questions involving

her death. about 9:00 last night. investigators say the man shot was taken to the hospital. right now we are not sure of his condition and it's still not clear what led up to the gunfire. early this morning a car crashed on highway 13 in oakland killing the driver. there were reports of the same car was seen driving erratically just minutes earlier. tara moriarty is at the crash scene this morning. >> the driver was actually driving erratically through several cities before he crashed. if you take a look behind me here there are smudge mark there is on the center divide. that is where he hit the center divider. we're on highway 13. you can see a bit of glass in the roadway. we're at the redwood road off ramp where the southbound lanes

were down shown for two hours. the man wastrifing a very high speed. swerving at all the roadway. someone called 911 before they spotted him. just minutes before this accident. then around 1:00 this morning he hit the center divide on 13 at redwood and rolled for about 100 feet. officers say he was wear his seat belt but died on scene. no other cars were involved in this accident. luckily. cars were diverted off the highway but around 3:00 this morning the roadway opened back up. the chp is trying to figure out what caused this crash were drugs and alcohol involved? we will also keep you posted if you learn the identity of the victim. live in oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. the search continues in palo alto for a man accused of attacking and groping a woman at the park. it happened just before noon on friday. police have released the sketch of the man. katie utehs is in palo alto with a description of the

attacker. katie. >> reporter: neighbors and joggers we have spoke with are happy to hear that description and spread the word. it's exactly what police want you to do so they can catch this attacker. the woman attacked on friday is doing okay. she did have to fight off the man as he tried to pin her down. let me show you that distinct description that we have. about 5'3" and 170-180 pounds with a pot belly. the map was slightly unshaven with salt and pepper hair. he approached a woman sitting on a park bench. she asked if she was married and if they could quote become good friends. as she stood to leave he shoved his hand down the back of her shirt. he tried to kiss her neck and mouth. >> if i was by myself in the park which i often a during the

day. so i would be scared. >> reporter: police say the man was seen walking away from the park but they have not had any similar reports. she had to call the police when she got home because her cell phone was not working in the park. that is why they need your help spreading the word about the suspect -- live in palo alto katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. time 16:06. firefighters in fairfield are trying to determine if a homeless camp may be to blame for a fast moving fire that came real close to homes. >> oh my god. >> reporter: you are looking at cell phone footage. this was taken yesterday by neighbors showing you all the heavy smoke out there. the fire started in a grassy area off highway 12 near beck avenue. at least 20 homes were evacuated as the flames spread

and some of the people joined firefighters in battling the flames. >> i started knocking on the neighbors and screaming oh there is a big fire and everything. after that my husband was out there watering everything. >> about 100 firefighters rushed to the scene. they were especially concerned because of all the dry and windy conditions. 15 acres burned before the fire was controlled. fire crews stayed out there until 8:00 p.m. making sure there were no flairups. firefighters in cast that county still battling a wild fire that has already burned 4,000 acres. it's called the bully fire. it started saturday afternoon. this morning it's only 15% contained. 18 buildings have been destroyed and 15 homes and 508 other buildings are threaten -- and 50 other buildings are threatened by the flames. two injuries reported so far. a man identified as 27-year-

old freddy alexander smoke iii was arrested. he's accused of starletting the fire. investigators say he was illegally growing marijuana and the exhaust from his truck set dry grass on fire. even with more thieves being caught on surveillance video, car thefts are on the rise. police say car thefts are up by 10% city wide this year. in the angle side school district they are up 6%. police say older honda's are a target. time is 6:08. the oakland city council meets this week with a big meeting over the future of the oakland a's. they will hold a special session wednesday night on the controversial lease extension for the a's. council members will get their first chance to question members of the coliseum board which recently approved the ten-

year lease. oakland mayor jean quan wants them to ratify the deal. however some city council members say while the lease is a good deal for the a's. it's a bad deal for the city of oakland. meantime the a's on certain future that may be causing tensions between the fans and owner wolf. several a's fans claim coliseum security guards are taking down signs in the stadium stands urging the team to stay in oakland. the a's deny the claims which they are only taking down signs that are too big or violate other stadium rules. time is 6:09. some luxury stores in san francisco are closed today. coming up the big match that left many under water in union square and when they could open up again. >> but first possible relief at the pump. how much gas prices have dropped over the past few weeks. >> right now we are still looking at a commute that is

more than two years after

the sinking of the costa concordia crews have started their biggest salvage operation in history. they are rying to -- 32 people died in that cruise ship. one person was never found. it's possible his body may still be inside the wreckage. the ship was hauled upright in september. it's sitting on under water platforms at this point. the floating operation will take up to seven days. 25 kite surfers and wind surfers are safe. that is after being rescued by the coast guard. it took place between 5:30 and 7:15 p.m.. the coast guard used two boats to rescue the stranded surfers. so far no reports on why they needed rescuing. but the coast guard is reminding other sports entuesday chris to -- enthusiasts to wear a life jacket.

the house veterans affairs committee will hear from the inspectors generals office about the latest inspection. some va workers were cooking the books on veteran's benefit claims to make it look like they were being handled properly. this is similar to other charges that va schedulers were changing dates to cover up long delays in medical appointments. investigators say the workers manipulated numbers to meet their performance goals and also get bonuses. the u.s. marines testing out something new. a bionic helper. this is called a robo ma reap. it is being tested during the annual rim of the pacific military exercises in hawaii. that event involves 22 nations and 25,000 military personnel. israel's military says it shot down an unmanned drone

sent from gaza. the first time it has seen such a weapon sips the fighting with militants started last week. israel continues its air strikes on targets in gaza. so far more than 170 palestinians have been killed in those attacks. and hamas in gaza have fired almost 1,000 rockets at israel. they have caused some injuries and damage but until deaths. that is largely because of israel's iron dome defense system. >> the difference between us is that we are using missile defense to protect our civilians and they are using their civilians to protect our missiles. >> you cannot target that building even though if you suspected that a militant is there. according to international, that is a war crime. >> now israeli troops entered gaza briefly yesterday. they raided a missile launching cite. that lead to full scale ground

invasion. prompting foreign citizens in gaza to leave. gas prices across the country continue to fall as crude oil production has stabilized. the average price for a regular gas in the u.s. $3.67 a gallon. that is down four cents a gallon in the last three weeks. bay area gas prices poll lowing the national trend. they are down more than $0.03 a gallon within the last week. in oakland gas is $4.10. san jose is averaging a penny cheaper. there -- so far 1600 people have died from children being left in a car. when it's 91 degrees outside, the inside of a can can reach 108 degrees after only ten minutes. >> you still have a child that is strapped in a car that is

exposed to extreme heat. that i can assure you no adult would be able to endure. >> authorities in el paso, texas are investigates the most recent hot car death where a two-year-old was left in the car parked at the family's home. >> it really is a big deal. especially with the hot temperatures in the bay area. sal, can you take care of the folks especially in the south bay? >> yeah we will start there dave and pam. right now we are looking at a commute that is mostly good. even a crash hasn't made it slow yet. we look at 280 northbound. it is very nice getting into the silicon valley. you can see the traffic will be doing well. if i put the maps up, you can see the traffic is doing well. all of the road sensors are green. there is an over turned vehicle 880 right near 237. but it has not been causing delays. right now the traffic is not

effected. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza where there is definitely slow traffic. we can still see that traffic is backed up for about a 15 minute delay here and it makes your total drive time into the city 20 minutes. now at 6:17 let's go to steve. thank you. a very good morning. mostly clear. usually the ktvu east bay tree is wrestling in the wind. today it's very quiet. very still. most locations say calm. i will be honest with you, it's a tough forecast. my confidence level is usually very high. but these clouds almost to fresno make it up here, that would take 5-10 degrees off the forecasted highs. huge difference in the spreads. as much as ten degrees for certain areas. it will be warmer today. especially inland. 60s and 70s by the coast.

if the higher clouds come in, then only 97-98. 82 for oakland. i think the higher clouds come in later. same for pleasanton which is starting off at 61 degrees. 80 at noon. 98 today. there is a lot down here. so far they are not taking the term but it's really close. i think this favors our forecast for the high temp. but 60s on the temps or 50s. half-moon bay believe it or not two hours ago was 48. santa rosa 53. 58 oakland. there is a lot of 6:s. if you get up in the higher elevations it is 77. yet there is some 80s. you can even find 80-82 degrees. that is really warm air aloft without any sea breeze. that usually equals a pretty hot day inland. but those are justth little

guys. this is the main volt of the clouds. if that comes in look at the cloud cover. there has been rain there. if you are heading down there, it will not be the greatest day. 90-degrees already. 70s almost near reno right few. the higher clouds continue to lift northward. it makes me very nervous. our cloud forecast shows them filtering into the south bay and thicken up as we toward tonight and especially on tuesday. sun and clouds. hot inland. high clouds. nice by the coast. 60s and 70s there. 80s around the bay. again the key is the higher clouds. they will be thickening up on tuesday. and then we cool it down. the fog comes roaring back. a little warmup by the weekend. city know map county grape growers say this years harvest won't set any records for highs. but this years weather has been ideal for high quality grapes.

businesses. police used tear gas and rubber bullets to break up the crowds. several people were arrested. the pakistani teenager that survived after being shot in the head by the taliban is making headlines once again. militants targeted activists -- now she is in nigeria calling for the release of the more than 200 schoolgirls that were kidnapped by the militant group boca hah ram. >> i consider those girls as my sisters. they are my sisters and i'm going to speak up for them until they are released. >> she is turning 17 today. she is scheduled to meet with nigeria's president. her birthday wish is that the kidnapped girls are released immediately and alive. to make room for the additional seats about two inches will be shaved off in the space between the current

rosa. they easily be 100. east san jose 84. we will go 90 although san jose proper around 93. san francisco not much in the way of any fog. we will go 72 for a high. there will be a big difference in all of these temps. this is the key for right here. as long as the higher cloud deck stays south then it will roll in. right now it's in the 60s for many. or 50s. it won't take long to start warming up. l.a. honda only 53. foster city at 57 degrees. mostly clear. higher clouds may be up toward minute vino county -- mendocino county and cake lath. hot inland. 60s and 70s and 80s.

here is sal. we are looking at a commute that is waking up. if you are just joining us for this monday morning. z at the toll plaza we still have a 15-20 minute delay and 25 minute drive time total to get to the san francisco side of the bridge. we keep tracking anything that would happen on the span but right now it has been routine traffic. same thing with 880 if you are driving near the oakland coliseum the traffic here doesn't look bad at all. we've had nice looking commute all the way down to hayward and the commute here is also looking good as you drive to the san mateo bridge. the south bay commute here and 101 and 280. we had a minor accident on 237 near 101 that is still not causing any slow traffic. for the most part this is a pretty easy monday to start. the time 6:32. let's go back to the desk. we are beginning with

developing news from vallejo. two shootings 234 less than two hours. we'll have more on an officer involved shooting. that is coming up in a minute. we will start with alex savidge joining us live now. you are covering a deadly shooting last night in vallejo. good morning. >> a neighbor told me a short time ago the victim in this case was a woman that lived here on the street that happened to be visiting a friend of hers that lives in this unit behind us here last night. that is when someone came to the door of this place and opened fire on that woman leaving her dead. detectives though still trying to figure out exactly what lead up to the deadly shooting. let me show you what the scene looked like. we watched as an officer checked the area. the shooting was here at the apartment building on mare island way. and it happened at 1030. police say they arrived and found a woman that had been shot to death just outside of one of these units. now the motive for the crime is unclear. police have not released any motive thus far.

a woman that lives a few doors down from here says she believes the crime is racially motivated. we also don't know if anybody is in custody in connection with this killing. there is a report to that extent. and it's possible that person is a next door neighbor. we are certainly working to confirm all of those with vallejo police as soon as we learn more information on what happened here last night. we will certainly bring that to you. alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. vallejo police also investigating alabama officer involved shooting. this happened on mark street a little after 9:00 last night. the man that was shot was taken to the hospital. we don't know his condition and it's still not clear what lead up to the gunfire. early this morning a car crashed on highway 13 in oakland killing the driver. there were reports that the same car was seen driving

erratically just minutes earlier. tara moriarty is at the crash scene. this is at the redwood road off ramp with more on what witnesses saw. tara. >> reporter: the chp says the victim was speeding for several miles starting all the way back in contra costa county. we are obviously in alameda county. if you take a look behind me here. you can see debris from the car, from the accident still in the median and glass in the roadway. we're at the redwood road off ramp where the road was shut down for two hours. the man was driving at high speeds. swerving all over the road. someone called # 911 after they spotted him on highway 24 westbound just minutes before this accident. and then around 1:00 this morning he hit the center divide and rolled for about 100 feet. officers say he was wearing a seat belt but he died on scene and luckily no other cars were involved in the accident.

cars were diverted off the highway. at 3:00 this morning the car -- if we happen to get the identity of the person involved, whether pass it along to you. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. a grass fire that forced evacuations in contra costa county had canary up over night. two trees caught fire shortly after 1:00 this morning. firefighters are expected to cut down those trees. the original fire started friday night. it was caused by a car that crashed into a power pole and burned 150 acres. was fully contained on saturday but firefighters say the fact that homeowners created 100 feet of clearance around their homes kept that fire from spreading. our time is 6:36. san francisco shoppers used to spending money at high end stores they are waiting to see if several stores will open today after a big water main

break over the weekend. brian flores is in san francisco now. you're at stockton and geary to tell us what happened. >> reporter: that remains a big question. you know there are pretty high end stores here. you have neiman marcus, jimmy chiu, the main question what will happened to that mer channel days? we don't know. i want to go to video of what it looked like on saturday. officials say it started when a crew working on the central subway tunnel punctured an eight inch water line and sent water spews all over the place. at one point according to fire officials there was two feet of water in the basement at some of the high end stores. fire officials also say there appears to if a lot of merchandise stored in the basement. it's unclear where that merchandise ended up. the leak lasted six hours

before crews were able to cap the leak around lunchtime. it is unclear who will pay for the damage. we will keep you posted on which stores will open today and what will happen to the merchandise. brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. muni workers due to vote today on a new contract. now today's vote follows a tentative agreement between the union leaders and management. under the deal muni operators would get a 14% raise over three years. that would be enough to cover the workers increased pension cost. if approved they would settle a dispute. this is going to be a very busy week for dozens of pot clubs in san jose. about 80 medical marijuana operations are expected to shut down on friday when the city's new regulations go into effect.

many patients are stocking up on pot to beat the deadline which is five days away. >> we're trying to keep up with the command. people are buying them by the bulk. >> normally we would limit it to an ounce a day. >> critics argue the stuff new restrictions limit an out right ban. they have collected 60,000 sixties on a petition to over turn some of the regulations but that is far short of the 100,000 signatures needed. palo alto is about to become home to the largest ronald mcdonald house in the world. there is a ground breaking ceremony to celebrate the expansion of the house next to the stanford shopping center. when the work is done, there will be 123 guest rooms for families. right now the waiting list includes more than 40 families. they have served families with children receiving treatment at a hospital that lives more than 50-miles from hole.

there is a new report out today it links ipads with rashes. the report in the journal pediatric says an 11-year-old boy developed a body rash. diagnosissed as a nickel allergy caused by its ipad. they fixed the problem by putting the ipad inside of a protective case. nickel rashes are not life threatening but they are very uncomfortable. they have also been linked to cell phones, lab tops, jewelry and zippers. 6:40 is the time. camera shy crooks. what a new report says about car thefts in san francisco and whether a huge increase in surveillance cameras is deterring the crime. >> we are live in palo alto where police say they need your help. i'll tell you about aggressive attack in a city park. >> good morning. right now we are looking at a commute where traffic is moving along nicely on 101 approaching the 80 split in san francisco. we'll tell you what it's like

kissing a woman in the city park. ktvu katie utehs is live in palo alto now to tell us why the police want your help in finding him. good morning katie. >> reporter: the concern is when someone gets away with an take like this the person gets even bolder. the woman is okay. but she had to fight off the man when he tried to power her down. let me show you that sketch. the woman was able to describe her attacker to the police. he is described as middle eastern. 45-55 years old. 5'3" around 170 pounds with a pot belly. he is slightly unshaven with short salt and pepper hay. the man approached the woman that was sitting on a park bench. she asked -- he asked if she was married and asked if they

could become good friends. neighbors are surprised by the aggressive attack in the small park. >> i will be honest, we just left our house. we were like we don't even need to lock the door. we feel really safe in this neighborhood. that is scary. that is something we will lock the door from now on. >> police say the man was seen walking away from the park. they have not had other reports of similar incidents. her cell phone wasn't working in the park. so that delayed police response and many of the potential witnesses were already gone from the park by the time police arrived. so if you know anyone matching that description or saw anyone on friday match that description,less contact the police. they are -- their concern is the attacker could grow bolder if he is not caught. katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. the highway patrol has released new information about a deadly crash on highway 17 last week. 25-year-old dan mcguire was

driving one of the ten cars that was hit by an out of control tractor trailer. a preliminary investigation shows that trailer of the semi slid over the top of his car. he was wearing a seat belt but he was still ejected from his car and died at the scene six other people were taken to the hospital. the chp says they are still trying to figure out what caused the truck to lose control. investigators in rohnert park are still looking for the driver they believe hit and killed a 21-year-old man. that happened early saturday morning along petaluma hill road. nathan garza junior was walking home when a car hit him near the intersection of hunter lane. the driver did not stop and a woman that lives nearby says her husband heard the tires screeching. >> and then he heard an impact. but it sounded so hard he thought it was another car. >> the chp says they found the car that hit garza parked on the street on nearby holly

welcome back. it's 6:54. this week some of the thousands of children and families in the u.s. have entered the u.s. illegally are being sent back to central america. the department of homeland security wants to move quickly. officials say the idea is to show people in other countries where the immigrants are coming from that despite what they may have heard, the u.s. is not automatically allowing children that show up at the boarder to stay here. >> we have to move quickly to repay treeuate these children. the only way this will stop is if plane loads of children arrive back in the countries where they have come from. >> most have come here toest cape violence, drug cartels, and street gangs. the dmv still struggling to find out how to comply with the new law that allows
