malaysia airlines flight 17 was shot out of the sky by a missal and the question is who was behind the attack and why. good evening. hello. i am frank somerville. >> and i am gasia mikaelian -- hello. i am frank somerville. >> and i am julie haener. >> the death stole 298. ukrainian officials say 23 americans were on board but the state department hasn't confirmed that. u.s. officials say radar confirms a surface to air missile system tracked the plane before it went down. the question now, who fired that missile? ktvu's mike mibach joins us with the very latest on the investigation. mike? >> reporter: the crew of malaysia airlines flight 17 never made a distress call. the plane was at 30,000 feet when it was hit by a russian made surface to air missile, known as a buk. the u.s. is analyzing the

missile to determine where it came from. >> reporter: impact and then had explosion. this is video taken near the crash site. you can see burning wreckage scattered 10 miles across a field in ukraine. >> looks like it may be a terrible tragedy. >> reporter: malaysia airlines flight 17 was headed from amsterdam to kuala lumpur when it crashed 30 miles from the boarder. she and her child missed the deadly flight. >> i am just thinking -- i feel like i have been give an second chance. hopefully -- [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: the crash comes when tensions between russia and ukraine continue to be heated. ukrainian president petro poroshenko called the crash an act of terror maintaining pro- russian separatists were behind the attack. vladimir putin russian

president vladimir putin said it was -- [ indiscernible ] >> the united states will offer any assistance we can. >> reporter: as the investigation gets launched the mourning has already begun. >> we are all united in grief. >> president obama phoned petro poroshenko soon after the crash emphasizing all evidence must stay in place until international investigators arrive on scene. several passengers on board the plane were heading to an aids conference in australia. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. >> more details now on what may have brought down the jet liner. ukraine claims pro-russian forces fired a surface to air missile. ukraine says it was a buk missile system and experts tell cnn russian and ukrainian

forces operate that missile system. it is capable of reaching an airliner at 33,000 feet and that was the attitude the plane was flying at when it was hit. the claims from ukraine might be backed up by a social media posting by a commander for the pro-russian militants. he wrote his forces brought down a ukrainian transport plane in the same area at the same time. moscow is denying any involvement. >> the faa warned u.s. carriers to avoid the air space in april. they determined it was too dangerous. but foreign airlines are not bound by those rules. the prime minister of malaysia says it was declared safe by the world civil aviation body and the faa can ban flights

over conflict zones. he offered this advice if you are flying on an international carrier. >> you can plug in your airline, flight number to many different services and it will give you a route of flight. >> one website that is used is www.flightaware.com. members of the bay area ukrainian community say the incident shines a light on the conflict in ukraine. in san francisco today a woman told us that she horrified by the tragedy and the ongoing violence in the country. she says ukraine is being bullied by separatists and they need more help from the u.s. >> sanctions are not going to be enough if russian troops go into ukraine in a more -- [ indiscernible ] >> the ukrainian army has been -- doesn't have the strength to

during yesterday's chase of bank robbery suspects and ktvu channel 2 news obtained recordings of how police were communicating throughout the whole incident. first, though the chase. [ indiscernible ] >> shooting at us with a rifle. shooting at us with a rifle. >> taking rounds. taking rounds. >> dropped a hostage on the ground. >> as the chase came to an end the order to police to cease fire and stay down and as you know two suspects ended up being killed and one hostage was also killed. ktvu's john sasaki now has more on those new tapes that he was able to obtain today that show that massive fire fight that led to the deaths. >> reporter: 24 hours later and the scene where this incident ended was still shut down.

this video shows the place chase yesterday afternoon. hundreds of rounds of gunfire. >> we had an officer who was able to get shots off at the vehicle. struck the tires. disabled the vehicle and after that it was a gun battle. >> reporter: at the bank of the west where the started -- >> we are very concerned. big loss. somebody's mother. somebody's daughter, wife. >> people have been paying theirerments and leave flowers -- pair respects respects and leave flowers. >> i think it is sad that a little girl had to experience her mom not coming back. >> reporter: three men committed the robbery and took three women out of the bank as hostages. they led police on a long chase. two of the hosts fell or thrown out of the moving vehicle. >> my nephview was in the driveway -- nephew was in the driveway, ran over to her. started talking to her. trying to wake her up and then

she started gushing blood. >> reporter: police expect the two bank employees to survive. two of the robbers was killed as was the third hostage, misty holt-sing. the surviving robber used her as a human shield. >> what he did was a cowardly act and he put that hostage in harm's way to protect himself. >> reporter: that robber is 19- year-old jaime ramos. he is facing homicide, attempted murder, kidnapping and robbery. he will appear in court monday. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. police arrested a man this afternoon who shot a 69-year- old man in a case of road rage about 11:00 a.m. this morning in front of a home. investigators say the homeowner shot a man who followed him into his garage during an argument sparked by road rage. the 71-year-old homeowner fired a warning shot and then fired

again hitting the victim. >> take a deep breath. you are responsible for your actions. before you follow someone on to their property and pull out a gun and use it. >> the man is in serious condition. investigators say he was not carrying a weapon. new at 6:00 p.m. boys and girls club of san francisco said rip off artists are using their name to make a quick buck. they say men are asking for donations in places they shouldn't and then keeping the money. ktvu's david stevenson looked into the scam and obtained photos of the people who are blamed here. >> the boys and girls of san francisco says this is not a new scam but it is one they have been seeing a lot of in recent weeks. >> reporter: every summer day 1500 kids come to boys and girls club of san francisco.

>> i enjoy seeing the kids and knowing they are coming to a place that is safe and fun. >> reporter: now there are worries scammers damaging their reputation. this shows two of the 20 incidents in the last three weeks in which young people solicit donations in their name. it is something the boys and girls of san francisco says it doesn't do. >> these folks are misrepresenting our kids. you know? and they are duping our donors. >> reporter: donors like him. >> doesn't make me feel good. >> reporter: he gave 20-dollars two weeks ago after they said they were raising money for basketball uniforms. >> when i heard boys and girls club my guard went down. >> reporter: boys and girls of san francisco president says there have been isolated incidents in the past but the

bulldog: oh boy! television announcer: ...is on now. ♪ mattress discounters continuing coverage now of the malaysia airlines flight 17 that was shot down by a surface to air missile. it is believed all 298 people on board were killed. >> and there is a call tonight for a international investigation due to the circumstances of the disaster. hard to imagine a more difficult situation in the middle of a war zone. tonight we are joined by former ntsb chair woman who is now the president and ceo of the national safety counsel. given that this is a war zone will that effect the

investigation and in particular, access to the crash site? >> absolutely. that has to be -- [ indiscernible ] >> sending people into a war zone. making sure if there are investigators they are protected and more importantly making sure that they have something to investigate. protecting that wreckage and the chain of custody of the evidence will be critical. >> the ntsb investigates crashes and disasters in the united states, and with american airlines, since this happened outside the u.s. who will take charge of the investigation? >> there are international protocols about who leads an investigation and who gets to participate and the international civil aviation organizations -- [ indiscernible ] >> the state of occurrence where the accident occurred is the lead for the investigation.

that would be the ukrainians. but other states have a right taparticipate. the state of -- to participate. the state of manufacturer. this is a boeing, has a right to participate. as does the state of the operator, malaysia. you can see these accidents, there are a lot of components of international cooperation that need take place. >> at least one of the two black boxes has been recovered. is it likely it could have survived an impact like this? >> these black boxes are designed to be robust. crash protected. be able to with stand the impact forces and fire protected so they can with stand hours burning in a hot fire. they are really designed to survive. sometimes they are the only

things left giving investigators clues. that is not the case in this crash or this event but we know those boxes can yield helpful information for investigators, regardless of the circumstances. >> former ntsb chair woman. thank you. >> absolutely. >> our coverage continues on www.ktvu.com. we posted the video of the crash right after it happened and a slide show of the destruction. the arrests of a drug trafficker, three drug traffickers in contra costa county is shedding light on a problem in downtown walnut creek. police are cracking down on drug activity there. ktvu's cristina rendon shows us where police are focusing their attention. >> reporter: the streets of walnut creek attract out of town visitors. and locals alike. >> safe.

one of the safer places in contra costa county. >> reporter: police are trying to put a stop to what happens when the sun goes down. >> if you will come to the town and come to the bars and sell narcotics or buy them they will be there. >> reporter: he says drug traffickers dealing at bar -- traffickers are dealing at bars and restaurants. since february he says the group made the rounds through downtown. >> these individuals were so blatant and so many people knew about it that we got a lot of information from different sources. >> i am surprised. i come out here organizationally and -- occasionally and i find it safe. >> she knows drugs could be a problem in any city. >> it has to do with the night life and that is separate from the day time here. >> reporter: police say the arrests don't eliminate the

drug problem and they know other dealers would be out -- could be out but they hope to make more arrests soon. cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. a san francisco grand jury indicted fedex for shipping powerful prescription drugs for illegal online pharmacies. prosecutors say for a decade fedex ignored warnings from several agencies. prosecutors say underground online pharmacies were using fedex to illegally distribute drugs. the indictment alleges fedex got rid of its usual business practices to accommodate the drug operations. fedex disputes the charges and said it will be pleaded not guilty. temperatures today on the mild side. look at the numbers.
