towing the car out of the ditch. we are out there on the scene. four people were very badly hurt. one person was killed. thank you for joining us on this friday morning july 18th i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's talk about your weather and traffic. steve as your details. >> reporter: we have a pretty good fog bank out there. yesterday was quite a show. be advised if you know it. if you are heading up there, just watch for things. for us the low cloud deck will head back to the coast. kind of a mild pattern. 50s and 60s.

62 gilroy. 62 san jose state. 63 sunnyvale. but the low cloud deck continues to be us. it's there. it's not going anywhere. we call it fog, sun, breezy. inland on the temps. but near average coast and bay. at the toll plaza there is still a 20 minute delay. but there is a little bit more of a delay. so again a 20 minute drive time into san francisco. not too steep on the bay bridge that the actual traffic looks good on the span. let's move along and take a look at interstate 880. you can see traffic is looking good in both directions from downtown to hegenberger the airport exit is a five minute drive. san jose we can see that the freeways are looking pretty good. there is one closure nobody 101 at the lawrence expressway and

that one is still there but the traffic is not effected on the freeway. but we begin our 6:00 hour with that developing news. we are learning more about that deadly highway tragedy in sunnyvale earlier this morning. chp says it involved five people who appeared to have been celebrating a birthday. janine de la vega is joining us live from sunnyvale with more information on the persona died. >> reporter: the car involved in that accident a honda accord has been pulled out of the ditch here on the off ramp to northbound 101 lawrence expressway. you can see it's there on the tow truck. we were told by the chp just a short time ago that the driver of that car was told at the hospital that his wife was killed in this accident. he is now under arrest. she was a passenger. again this accident has shut down the northbound 101 off ramp to lawrence expressway so that the chp can investigate. the sewly vehicle accident

happen -- the solo vehicle accident happened around 2:00 this morning. the male driver of the honda accord was speeding and lost control while turning on the off ramp and flipped it over. the drivers wife was partially ejected. crews rushed to the scene but her injuries were so severe she died. the driver and three remaining passengers are at the hospital with moderate to major injuries. they are expected to survive. none of them were wearing seat belts. >> when we showed up, there was an overwhelming odor of alcoholic beverages. we also assume the female passenger that did survive it was her 23rd birthday. we assuming they were coming from a birthday celebration. >> reporter: the chp did reinterview the driver and confirm that they were celebrating one of the passengers 23rd birthday. the woman who died is the registered owner of the car. the chp is again still

interviewing the survey veries of the -- survivors of the accident. we are trying to get more information where everybody is from from. but we do though the male driver has been arrested for dui and vehicular manslaughter. he is stilet the -- he is still at the hospital. we were just told by chp that they have updated their time on when they will open up the off ramp to lawrence expressway. thousand we are being told 5-10 minutes this will open back up to traffic. so that will definitely help the morning commute. reporting live from sunnyvale janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. now to our continuing coverage of malaysia airlines flight 317. vladimir putin is calling for a cease fire. he is asking both sides of the fighting lay down their weapons to allow negotiations. there are conflicting reports though this morning about the status of the planes black boxes. a prorussian rebel leader says no black boxes have been found

in the wreckage. earlier reports suggested that separatists had found some of the black boxes. the plane went down in eastern ukraine. it's an area controlled by prorussian separatists. >> whether the ukraine government is blaming the russians shooting down the plane, that is something they are denying. >> reporter: u.s. officials this morning or airline officials just released a more complex break down of who was on board that plane. so far they have not identified any americans on board the flight. still u.s. officials will play a critical role in this complex investigation. several news outlets reporting ukrainian rebels will allow the ntsb and fbi into that country to examine the crash site in an advisory role.

track tag that from spy satellites and radar says the jet was hit by a missile while flying 33,000 feet in the air. malaysia airlines was traveling from amsterdam to kuala lumpur when it was shot down. officials say they have so-far recovered 181 bodies and we do understand the airline will try to help the victims families. there are still quite a number of other people that are unaccounted for. 298 people total on board that flight. 173 of them were dutch. and this was the scene in kiev. mourners have created a shrine. other passengers on board came from usa trail y belgium, canada, germany, new zealand, and the united kingdom. and the other nationalities are still being verified. a representative from malaysia airline says the company will give the family members of each

passenger an initial $5,000 payment. >> reporter:. of the passengers on board the flight were heading to this weekends international aids conference in melbourn australia. ias says that conference in australia will go ahead as planned this weekend to honor the victims memories. live in the newsroom alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >> a special notice from the faa has been issued banning all american air carriers from flying into eastern ukrainian air space until further notice. overseas travelers are nervous

about this latest disaster. wondering if there is danger in the areas they will be flying over. we talked to a woman at sfo who is traveling to macedonia. >> i'm nervous flying regardless but this is making me even more nervous. >> aviation expert mike says the russian-ukrainian border is is so unstable that back in april u.s. officials banned air carriers from flying in areas. that ban has expanded to include all of eastern ukraine. we will continue to follow all the developments on the malaysia airlines incident throughout the morning and on our channel 2 website at ktvu.com. you can see more video and photos of the scene. we are following developing news from san francisco as well. i want to take you out to mayflower street.

this is in the bernal heights area. investigators are -- now we have just learned someone was detained in -- a man being led away from the scene in handcuffs. we are not lives in a it is what firefighters saw when they went inside to rafts with if if -- >> fire crews say there was one person hit in the fire. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. we are learning nor about the woman that was held hostage and later killed in wednesday's

bank robbery. friends and family of misty holt says he was a devoted wife and mother. she had a 19-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter. the family is particularly worried about the long-term effects on her daughter since she went with her mom to the bank. >> she was reading in the car while her mother went in to get some money for a hair cut. and that is why she stopped at the bank. >> she worked at a dentist office and married for 14 years a team of investigators including stockton police are investigating that bank robbery. the loan surviving suspect 19- year-old ramos.

two other suspects that were shot and killed were a 30-year- old and 27-year-old. both members of a notorious gang. police radio communications revealed all the chaos. >> shooting out the back window with a rifle. we are taking rounds. we are taking rounds. >> the suspects shot 14 police officers, civilian cars, houses, and other buildings. one of the questions investigators still want to answer is whether the bank robbers or police shot and killed miss holt. it's 6:11. the big day has finally arrived for san jose pot clubs. coming up in 20 minutes how medical marijuana supporters are responding to the tough new restrictions. >> up next it looks and sounds like a legitimate security

a huge wild fire in washington has now destroyed 35 homes and threatening hundreds more. it is burning just outside the small top of pitarous. that wild fire has grown to 7,000 acres. it is forcing hundreds of people to pack up and leave their homes. >> mine is right up there and it's under attack too. so i had to leave. i'm just trying to get these kids out of here. >> it is really something. even last night i mean it's way worse now. but last night it really looked like the cold on of hell. you can see flames everywhere you looked. >> the fire is is one of more than a dozen burning in washington and oregon. the main route through washington remains closed because of heavy smoke from the fires. the smoke played a big role in a multicar crash on interstate

90. more than a dozen people were hurt in a crash involving 15 cars and nine big rigs. the shasta county sheriffs department is investigating the death of a person's who's burned body was found near the origin of a fire there. it appears the victim died trying to escape the fire. the death could result in additional charges against the man accused of starting the wild fire. investigators say he sparked it while driving over dry grass on his way to an illegal marijuana farm. that fire has burned 11,000 acres. it is 49% contained since it started last week. time is 6:16. opponents of a ballot initiative that calls for california to be broken up into six states well now they are calling fraud. the goal is to break up california into smaller states. earlier this week silicon valley venture capitalized tim draper dropped off petitions to

the secretary of state. but opponents say some of the people that signed the -- say they were misled about their true intent. san francisco police and the boys and girls clubs of san francisco they are warning about a scam that seems to be growing in the city. young people are standing outside of stores. they are talking to people in parks about making donations. now the scammers often show a letter on boys and girls clubs stationary to appear legit mat. the head of the san francisco boys and girls club say he has heard of 20 incidents within the past three weeks. >> these folks are just misrepresenting our kids. if and they are duping our donors. >> the boys and girls clubs of san francisco says they never send young people out to ask for donations. people that want to make donations should go to their website which is secure. back over to sal to check on the friday morning commute.

how is it going? >> it's going pretty well. we do have slow traffic. the slowest commute is the bay bridge westbound. you will see people trying to get on to the bridge and into san francisco. it's still better than other days. you can see for yourself that the ramp from 880 which is on the far left moving along very nicely. if you have fast track, it will help you out. the drive time 20 minutes and no problems on the bridge. going either direction. let's go to milpitas. westbound 237 when you see this, this freeway is usually heavy. especially right here at the choke point where 237 and 880 come together. it looks great and that is pretty good indicator of what the santa clara valley traffic is looking like. in fact, if we look at the maps, you can see the speeds are pretty good. when you see green, that means they are at the speed limit. just a little red on northbound 101. but that is about all. 6:18 let's go to steve. thank you. well a lot of low clouds around. some breaks in the low clouds. it's a rather solid fog bank.

drizzle by the coast. breezy to windy. especially higher elevations. the weekend may be more tropical clouds. maybe. we will take a look at it in a second. i think today and tomorrow look all right. and tropical clouds have been playing along with thunderstorms up in the sierra. low clouds and fog keeping temperatures on the mild side. the sierra nevada has already issued a flash flood watch out through 9:00 on saturday. things are really, really exploding. so from central citier a northern sierra, and also toward reno you can get pretty big boomers here in the afternoon. if you are up here here, you already know that. there is a pretty good lightning show going on. for us it's night and morning fog. and more of a westerly breeze. expect toward the santa clara valley. 50s and 60s on the temps. a little cooler to much, much cooler for some.

it's 6:24. people in south china and vietnam are bracing for a typhoon after the storm killed at least 38 people in the philippine. that deadly typhoon forced half a million people out of their homes and knocked out power to two entire providences. they have sustained winds up to 112 miles an hour. it is expected to hit southern china late tonight and northern vietnam. time is 6:24. the new home of the 49ers in santa clara is officially open

to the public. the doors to levi stadium opened yesterday during a show stopping event in santa clara. and ktvu news brought it to you live. the 49ers hosted this ribbon cutting ceremony after the marking of the construction project. the official opening comes eight years after the 49ers first announced they plan to move to santa clara. >> now it's up to the 49ers to make sure that we give our fans something to cheer about. >> you can feel the difference. and you know the fans will feel the difference. >> the first event is a san jose earthquake soccer game back on august 2nd. two weeks later the 49ers will host the denver broncos for a preseason game. and the homeowner for the regular season is september 14th against the chicago bears. meantime nfl commissioner roger goodell used the ribbon cutting

ceremony to raise the possibility of the 49ers sharing levi stadium with the oakland raiders. the 49ers have never dismissed that idea. and goodell says it's up to the raiders to decide if they will build their own stadium or share levi stadium with the 49ers. raiders owner says he does not want to be a renter. he would prefer a new stadium in oakland. the hard rock casino and hotel in las vegas is coming to the south lake tahoe. they plan to spend $60 million to renovate the former horizon hotel. the hope is to bring new life to the south lake tahoe area. three black bear cubs back in the wild after being captured and released by wildlife officials in nevada. this is a photo of two of the little guys. they weigh between 15-22 pounds. they were tranquilized and tagged by department of

welcome back. time is 6:29. this is the ktvu channel 2 morning news. we are look at video of the scene of a terrible crash in sunnyvale. several people hurt. one person was killed. ktvu janine de la vega has been out there for several hours. coming up in two minutes, she will tell us what first responders say particularly stood out to them as they tried to rescue the victim. stay tuned for that. thank you for joining us here ktvu channel 2 morning news. friday, july 1st i'm -- friday, july 18th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. steve has the forecast. what is the weekend going to be like? >> pretty quiet here. the sierra nevada may have pretty good activity. low clouds, fog. 50s and 60s to start off with. the sierra nevada has been blowing one up in the afternoon. not right here. more suspected thunderstorm activity. severe weather already a flash flood watch has been posted. that is above 3,000 feet. it goes until 9:00 p.m.

on saturday. so mammoth, bear valley. be advised. there could be some hail, thunder and lightning. last thing we need is lightning but it looks like it will be pretty active up there. not so much here. but 50s and 60s on the temps. 63 until concord and walnut creek. and 59 half-moon bay and santa rosa. fog will head back to the coast. we have local drizzle there. not too much. typical july pattern for us. a little below arc. near average coast and bay. 60 ann 70s and 80s. here is sal. steve, we are look at a commute ha is doing okay in many area. we've had lighter than usual traffic on interstate 880. 80 westbound the drive time between the carquinez bridge and the mccarthur maze is about 18 minutes. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see traffic that is wacked up for a little bit.

this is a 20 minute drive across the span getting into san francisco with no major delays. the traffic continues to look good. contra costa idea i hi you will see what yo look like. topic of our news this hour a birthday celebration turned into a highway if tragedy. that freeway has reopened. if ktvu janine de la vega is joining us from the crash scene. >> reporter: cal tran is just finishing up, picking up the cones from this accident. so the off ramp here at northbound 101 and lawrence expressway is just about seconds from opening back up. the chp had been out here for for nearly five hours. us this isest -- this is especially tragic because the driver of the vehicle is responsible for his wife's death in an accident that they

this accident was told at the hospital that his wife had died in this accident. chp says the woman who died is the registered owner of the honda accord. the chp is interviewing the survivors of the accident. the male driver has been arrested for dui and vehicular manslaughter. he and his wife are from san jose but authorities are not yet revealing their identities. reporting live from sunnyvale janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:34. now to our continuing coverage of the downing of malaysia airlines flight 317. there are conflicting reports about the plane's black boxes. a pro russian separatist leader in eastern ukraine says rebels has not recovered any black boxes in the wreckage. this is conflicting with earlier reports that the rebels did indeed find several black

box. and an airline official held a news conference in the netherlands. he said he had no official conformation that black boxes have been found. >> there is a new report blaming rebels for shooting down the plane. a u.s. defense official with access to information that missile that took down flight 317 was most likely fired by prorussian -- pro-russian separatists. so far 181 bodies have been recovered. >> a jet went down in eastern ukraine. that is an area that russian separatists and ukrainian forces have been fighting over for three months now. >> the u.s. is concerned about repercussions from this international incident. >> the reprocushions they had throughout the world and this

is worse. >> ukraine, r shark and rebel leaders are all denying any involvement in the incident. there is fear that the separatists will prevent international crash investigators from enters the very large debris site. but this morning there are reports that the rebels will allow the ntsb and fbi join. >> there were 283 passiers and 15 crew members. 189 passengers were dutch. others came from australia, belgium, canada, germany, new zealand, southeast asia, and the united kingdom. no americans have been confirmed on that plane. >> russian president vladimir putin is calling for the

parties to put down their weapons. >> ktvu kyla campbell is live in washington, d.c. to explain the obama administrations reaction this morning. secretary of state john kerry is heading to the white house in a few hours far meeting. the obama administration stied call for a cease fire so international investigators could get into the region. >> the united states will offer any assistance we can to determine what happened and why. and as a country our thoughts and prayers are with all the families of the passengers. >> russian president vladimir putin did not say who was to blame for shooting down the commercial yet.

front of city hall all week and collecting signatures on petitions. critics say the new regulations are so strict most marijuana dispensaries in san jose have to shut down. the council approved the new regulations last month because of concerns over the number of pot clubs opening up in the city. this morning four people are without a home and firefighters in contra costa county trying to figure out what sparked a fire that damaged two homes. it started yesterday evening. within minutes the flames spread to a neighboring home. officials say the downed power lines made it hard to fight the fire. it happened late yesterday

afternoon. investigators say sheriffs deputies were forced to shoot and kill a man who was trying to run down an officer in his car. just minutes earlier offices say the same man was viciously beating a woman in front of several horrified witnesses. >> he was smashing her head off the side of the car. violently. and he was dragging her up and down the sidewalk and repeatedly beating her. >> investigators say the woman suffered severe head injuries but is expected to survive. the man killed was a 37-year- old parolee with a long criminal history for drug and weapons convictions. time is 6:40. early morning fire in san francisco turn into a crime scene. coming up on mornings on 2 the objects firefighters found that forced the police to get involved. >> and we're live in redwood city. if you see several fire trucks, police cars and ambulances at a nearby community college, don't worry it is yust a drill.

welcome back. time is 6:43. police hope this surveillance video will help track down a teenager that stole an 11-year- old boy's bike at knife point. investigators say you can see that suspect with a friend riding off with that stolen bike. it was stolen last week while the 11-year-old was playing at washington elementary school. police say the suspect and his friends were at a nearby 7- eleven store shortly before the robbery. he is wearing the chicago bulls cap and blue jeans with a distinctive pattern. a case of road rage in marin county led to one man being arrested and another man being in the hospital in serious condition. investigators say there was some sort of incident between james simon and 69-year-old tiburon man. simon pulled into his garage

and the other driver followed. simon got a gun. this is not the type of thing they expect on paradise drive. >> what i would say is take a deep breath and you are responsible for your actions before you follow someone on your property and before you pull out a hand give up and use it. >> when we last checked, that other driver that has not been identified is reported to be in serious condition. but investigators say they have been able to talk to him. happening today a major drill at peninsula college with law enforcement all over the area. brian flores has more on this emergency officers are trying to prepare for. >> reporter: we are live here in redwood city. if you do see plenty of police cars, fire trucks, ambulances this morning if you are going to be around this area, don't

worry about it it is a drill, but a very important drill. especially for many of these officers. talk to us about the importance of this drill and what it's about. >> reporter: basically what it is the san mateo county police chiefs and sheriffs association and the fire department they came together and they said you know, with all the incidents that have happened in the last couple of years, you know what, we need to prepare as law enforcement or fire personnel in this county. this is the type of training that we need to be really good at and we hope we never have to use. so what is happening this morning is we have members of the fire department, we have members of ems, we have members of law enforcement both from throughout san mateo county and santa clara county. all coming together to work together to basically figure out ahead of time how we will handle a sidewalk like this. >> and you mix the incidents in

the past. what have you taken away from these incidents and what do you expect to take away today after this scenario is done. >> training traditionally was you know if you get to something like this, you want to wait. however with the incidents, there has been a shift in thought and you know what, if you are there, you need to go in. obviously it's on every individual to figure out what they are comfortable with. we need to get people into these scenes and help them inside and locate who is doing this and handle that. that is what the training is today. it will be law enforcement, exms, fire personnel from all different agencies being mixed up and placed in groups and saying you are faced in this situation. how are you going to work together? >> reporter: it's so important to have that communication. this drill will be taking place actually it's taking place right now. it will be going on until 5:30.

a family from scotland says they are alive because of a miracle. they wanted to take that flight but they were denied because of a lack of seats. >> i'm just thinking i feel like i've been given a second chance. and so hopefully we will get there safely and i will see my family again. >> families of victims have been gathering at the airport seeking any information they can get. the malaysian government says it's sending a response team of 60 people to ukraine to investigate exactly what happened. analysts suggest malaysia airlines may go bankrupt. this comes after the plane vanished. it's believed that plane crashed into the indian ocean but it has not been found. even before the ukrainian disaster, one says malaysia airlines was losing $1.6 million a day and he didn't think the company could survive beyond a year. let's check in with sal and see what is happening on the

roads. the east shore, sal. >> we are looking at it. today has been a decent day for interstate 80 from the carquinez bridge to the mccarthur maze. the average speed is just under the speed limit which is 65 miles an hour for most of this stretch. we are in good shape. we've had a couple of good days. if you are looking for the best approach route and the ramp down to the toll plaza is looking very good. especially if you have fast track. and also we are looking at the commute in contra costa county where by thousand we have slow traffic. you can see traffic is a little slow. 6:50 let's go to steve. you sure about that sal? >> let's go to steve paulson.
