have more in your five-day forecast coming up, sal has the traffic. you can see from the pictures, the interstate 80 looks good. the time has not changed. there is a backup at the toll plaza. this is a 20-minute drive time into san francisco which for this time of the morning is not bad. it's not a bad commute at all. this commute is getting slow especially over the altamont pass. it's not surprising. we had word of a minor accident at the 680 interchange with 580. it's not causing a major delay, but it's there. 6:03 let's go to the desk. president obama is waking up this morning in san francisco. he'll attend two democratic fundraisers in the bay area.

we're joined live, he's outside the president's hotel. tell us about the big push for fundraising before the november elections. >> the president is in town working to raise money for the democratic party ahead of the middle term elections, he has a pair of fundraising stops, one in the south bay and one in san francisco. he'll be waking up at the intercontinental hotel in the south market area. you can see many streets are blocked up and there is tight security. these are the barricades on howard street between fourth and fifth. the secret service is checking cars as they come in this area. he's at the intercontinental hotel. after flying into sfo last night he came into the hotel and he has a busy day in store. he'll start off with the four seasons in san francisco later this morning.

this is supposed to raise cash for the congress committee. this will benefit the democratic congressional campaign committee. some people will spend $30,000 to get in the door. the president is not raising money for himself anymore. he's the leader of the party and is trying to help democrats hold on to the senate this coming november and the president comes west when he is looking for money. >> this is where the money, why do you rob banks, this is where the money is. here in california, president obama has relied on california to raise funds for his original election for the midterm and in 2010 and now the midterm election force 2014. >> a field poll shows half of california still approves of the president's job performance. still his bay area visit won't come without controversy.

woman was wounded when a bullet flew through a window of her apartment. three people were hurt in a car crash after that shooting. investigators say one of those people was racing away from the shooting scene. police are looking for a burglar. it happened in the happy valley area. this is the pickle picture of the -- picture of the suspect's car. this is gray with california license plate with 3n0 # 275. they have a vague description of the suspect. if you see this car, please call police. they're taking a unprecedented step to deal with a serious staffing problem. civilians will be helping a short handed police force in

the city. >> reporter: good morning, the police department has seen its staffing levels shrink and the police chief decided to launch the first ever community service officer program. this is in part to help free up patrol officers. the five-week academy started yesterday and is training 25 recruits to become civilian officers. once they're trained they'll be taking nonurgent burglary and auto theft calls. they may be called to be traffic cops and be called to crime scenes. they will be carrying pepper spray in case of a dangerous situation. there's been a shortage because of wage and benefittish universe. other specialized units have been forced to work overtime. >> i know the responses in my

neighborhood have not been good. over an hour is not acceptable. i mean they're swamped right now. every time i have a problem lately, the response times, and when you call back two or three times, oh, another officer will be responding, but he's responding to something else that's more important. >> the new officers will be wearing light blue uniforms with police insignia instead of the dark blue. they interviewed more than 800 applicants and 100 got through. the starting pay is $60,000 and they're expected to be ready to be deployed in september. the time is 6:09. it's official it if you waste -- if you waste water in the santa clara county, you'll be

here to 238 down to this area. the traffic is going to be okay after union city. it looks good into freemont headed to the south bay. 6:31 let's go to the desk. >> president obama is in san francisco today. alex savage is outside of his hotel to talk about the big push for fundraising. >> reporter: good morning, the president is here in town working to raise money ahead of the midterm elections this year. he has a pair of fundraising stops in the bay area today. the president will be waking up here in the city, in the south to market area. this is where he's staying at the intercontinental hotel down at howard street. we're at howard and fourth and you can see the street blocked off between fourth and fifth. they have a check point set up. the secret service is out here as well checking cars as they make their way into this area.

a heavy police presence down here. bear that in mind if you're coming to the city today. the president now in here last night. he has a full day on tap. he'll start off with the four seasons here in san francisco taking part in an event that is meant to raise money for the political action committee. after that the president will head to the south bay for los altos hills that will benefit the congressional committee. some donors will spend more than 30 grand to get in the door. the president is not raising money for himself anymore, he's trying to help democrats hang on to the senate this november. this strip may pose a bit of a challenge for the president. that's including the downed jetliner and the the trouble in

gaza. >> the president is campaigning and raising funds and dealing with this ongoing emergencies. it would be an impossible task to stop at every single international development. >> reporter: and naturally the president comes west whenever he's looking for money. california is friendly territory, a field poll shows about half of the people here in this state still approve of his performance, still his visit to the bay area won't be without controversy. there will be a large demonstration by immigration activists later on today. they'll be out in and they'll be out unfolding along the border. they'll be asking the president to protect the thousands of unaccompanied children making their way no the us right now. as we bring you to the market area in san francisco, howard is closed between 4th and 5th.

for more immigration judges and detention facilities in texas. house republicans are working on a bill with limited spending focusing on increasing border security. >> we have breaking news of another deadly air disaster. a trance asia passenger plane crashed a while ago trying to make a emergency landing. 51 people are dead 71 others are hurt. we he don't know where the plane came from or where it was headed. ktvu is following the story today. as we get more information in, we'll bring it to you on the morning news. a ukraine spokesman said pro-russian separatists brought down two fighter jets it happened near the russian border. the pilots ejected from the planes, those planes carry up to two crew members each.

this happened just a couple of miles where malaysia flit 17 went down after being shot down. the first bodies from the malaysia airlines tragedy are being flown from the ukraine to the netherlands. a special ceremony was held for the victims. they're being loaded on to the planes, and the first plane carrying 40 bodies is due to arrive in the netherlands 20 minutes from right now. family members as well as the dutch royal family will be there to welcome those coffins when they arrive. the victims' remains will go through dna testing to identify the victims. a liquor store owner in san le and dough has a lot of cleaning up to do after the truck can come in the business late last night. the windows are boarded up and it may not be able to open for

a while. >> reporter: if you look behind me you can see where the truck rammed into the side of this liquor store. the plywood is where a brick wall used to be and over here, this piece of wood is basically propping up the corner of the store. a truck with a camper shell on top crashed into this at 10:30 last night. the store was open at the time but luckily no one inside was hurt. the store must be inspected to make sure it's safe to open up. >> it will be evaluated and it will be inspected later. we'll make sure it's safe and the business owner can return and assess the damage. >> they don't know if alcohol was pa factor in the crash -- a factor in the crash. we can see the front door, it's

. it's 6:43 and a san francisco family is grieving the death of a college graduate after a sand tunnel collapsed on him in half moon bay. 26-year-old adam pye was digging a hole on the beach with his friend when the sand caved in around him. it took rescuers 35 minutes to get to him and it was too late. pye's parents told us that the trip to the beach was supposed to be a rest for their hard working son who graduated last month from cal state east bay. another unpress depthed step to respond to the serious staffing shortage. we're told how civilians will

be helping the police force in the bay area city. >> reporter: good morning. we've been talking to peel in san jose who tell me that the -- talking to people in san jose who tell me that the police department is understaffed and they're hoping it will make a difference. here are the 25 recruits in their first academy class. they'll be going through training for the next five weeks learning how to handle a sort of situations -- a variety of situations. they'll be assisting control, writing reports, doing crowd control and they may be called to help at a crime scene. they're also handling burglary and auto theft calls that are not urgent. one man said he noticed a delay of response times.
