westbound interstate 80 although it's not stop and go. for the most part it's up to 50 miles an hour for the stretch. that's your average speed. no major problems here. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, there's a 25-minute delay as you drive through. no major problems. i want to focus on some. traffic that's been here in the middle of the bay. 880 getting cloe as you drive between 238 and fremont to the stevenson exit. this whole stretch is slow. after that, it looks good. if you are driving to the peninsula, highway 92, the san mateo bridge slow. when you get to 101 at 92, it looks better. back to the desk. >> all right. thank you, sal. happening now -- president obama is in the bay area this morning to attend two democratic party fund-raisers. alex savidge is outside of the president's hotel in san francisco to talk about the big push for fund-raising. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, to you. the president waking up in san francisco. he's staying at the

intercontinental hotel in the south of market, which is just down howard street. but howard is closed down here as we show you the scene behind us. you can seat pair -- you can see the barricades are up. police are checking the big rigs trying to make their way to the hotel. because of the closure, that's leading to some traffic troubles nearby. take a look at some of the streets. this is 4th street at howard this morning. the traffic backed up in this area because of the president's visit. the president flew into sfo last night. he came straight here to the hotel in the city. now as he wakes up, he has a busy day on tap. he's working to raise money for the democratic party ahead of the mid-term elections. he will start off at the four seasons here in san francisco taking part in an event that's meant to raise cash for the house majority political action commit tee. after that he attends the south bay for a fund-raising event in

los altos at a private donation. some will be forking over $40,000 to get in the door. the president is helping to help democrats hang onto the senate. and naturally, he comes west when he's looking for money. >> this is where the money is. it was said why do you rob banks? that's where the money is. president obama has relied on california for the past six years to raise money for his original elections, for the midterms in 2010, for his re- election and now for the midterms of 2014. >> reporter: the president's bay area visit don't come without controversy. protesters are planning to meet him at some of his various stops today. that will include a large demonstration in the south bay. they will be outside of the silicon valley event that happens around noontime. they will be call canning on the president to deal with the humanitarian crisis on the

border and pushing for him to deal with the thousands of unaccompanied children making their way into the u.s. we expect the president to leave the intercontinental hotel in the south of market area around 9:00 and head to the four season, just a few blocks away. that begins at 9:20 this morning. keep this mind, there will be rolling street closures here in san francisco. so you obviously want to make sure you plan ahead here. some of the streets could be backed up in this area as the president makes his way to that fund-raising event a short time from now. live this morning in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. 7:06. san francisco police are investigating a homicide just two blocks away from that hotel where the president is staying. police say after 11:00 last night, a patrol unit was flagged down near 6th and mission regarding possible shots fired. officers found a gunshot victim on the street. he was taken to san francisco general hospital where he later died. no arrests have been made. another homicide took place

less than a half-mile away at 6th and harrison streets yesterday morning. 7:06. we want to update you on the breaking news we first told you about 20 minutes ago. another deadly air disaster. this one in asia. sky news reporting that a trans asia airlines passenger plane crashed while trying to make an emergency landing on an emergency landing off the western coast of taiwan. there are conflicting reports about how many people are killed. the taiwan government says 51. seven others hurt. however, another report says the death toll is closer to 40. there are news reports that the emergency landing was caused by strong winds from a typhoon this morning. ktvu is following the story for you. we'll bring you new information as soon as we get it in. back here at home, new this morning, the owners of a san leandro liquor store cleaning up right now after a truck

crashed right into their storefront. ktvu's tara moriarty is out there now to tell us and shown us what happened out there. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. there is a notice that shows a city inspector did come out here about a half-hour after the crash to survey the damage. he says that this entrance is not safe. you can see there is a stick propping up the building here. if we pan to the left, you can see that there's some stuff boarded up here and that's where a brick wall used to be and then the front door is completely shattered. that's on the side of the building. since this is the entrance that customers use, we'll have to see if the store is able to stay open. firefighters say that a truck with a camper shell on top fired into the front of the business on manor boulevard at 10:30 last night. this store, house of liquors, was open. no one inside was hurt. firefighters say the store must be inspected thoroughly to make sure it's safe to open up.

>> currently we're having to shore it up. we'll put lumber material up. >> reporter: investigators say they don't know if alcohol was a factor in the crash. the driver was given a neck brace and taken to the hospital as a precaution. we're live in san leandro, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. now to the crisis in the middle east. secretary of state, john kerry, is now in israel trying to negotiate a cease-fire between israel and hamas. kerry's plane landed this morning at the main airport in tel aviv. today, kerry is meeting separately with israel's prime minister and the president of the palestinian authority. the fighting between the two sides is still going on despite the fact that kerry is there. at least 630 palestinians and 279 israeli soldiers have died since the latest fightings began two weeks ago. now, while secretary kerry flew on a military jet american and some european commercial jets,

they are banned from flying into tel aviv because of safety concerns. the faa flight ban is for at least 24 hours to let the aviation administration investigate the situation. about 90 minutes ago. germany's largest airline lufthansa announced it will not fly to tel aviv for at least another 24 hours. a big party that's part of the largest gay pride celebration in the nation, every june, may soon be coming to an end. pink saturday is a street celebration in san francisco's castro district that attracts thousands of people the night before the pride parade. the examiner reports the organizers of the party may cancel it due to growing violence in recent years. that includes a suspected hate crime targeting two people at pink saturday last month. organizers are considering starting and ending the event earlier and limiting the party to a smaller area before they decide whether or not to

cancel. it's official. if you waste water in santa clara county, you will be hearing from the valley wurt district and the -- water district and the water cops. the county board of supervisors will hire ten temporary workers to be so-called water cops. they will respond to complaints to people who are wasting water, that includes washing drown sidewalks, driveways, house sidings, washing cars without using a nozzle to shut the water off and people who have water running down their landscaping. >> some has been not at snitchy. my neighbor doesn't realize they are leaving it on at night. >> the water cops won't be writing tickets or imposing fines, instead, their job will be to edge kate customers on how their -- educate customers on how they are wasting water and what to do to conserve it. water is back on at the

springhouse apartment complex stoneridge drive. they had been without water since friday due to a water main break. work crews finally fixed the broken pipe around noon yesterday. management declined to comment to ktvu news. people living at the complex say they've been told they won't be charged rent for the past five days. a man from oakland is a lot richer this morning thanks to a $2 lottery ticket. anthony smith was buying groceries at gazalli's in east oakland when he decided to buy three scratchers. the last one he scratched off turned out to be a $1.3 million winner. the lump sum payment comes to $750,000 before taxes. now he plans to buy his first house and possibly start a laundromat business. congratulations. >> yeah, exactly. 7:12. an 80-year-old woman hurt after a bullet flies through her window. coming up at 7:30, the two

connected incidents san francisco police are investigating. three different crime scenes parent of a massive manhunt in southern california as the search goes on for someone who killed two people and who also shot a sheriff's deputy. more slow traffic crossing the bay as the bridge is slowing down. we'll show what is happening. tracking more clouds out there. even a few more sprinkles and drizzle. coming up, when the clouds move out of the area and when 90s make a comeback in the forecast.

7:15. search crews in washington state think they found the body of the last missing person from that deadly mudslide back in march. two weeks ago, searchers found a large debris field, then they traced it back to the home of a missing woman. that's where they found her

body. the had 4-year-old woman was killed -- the 44-year-old woman was kill aid long with her husband -- along with her husband. her body was 100 yards away from her husband. the doomed costa concordia ship is being towed back to port, where it will be dismantled. spectators gathered at the coast to watch what's called the biggest salvage operation in maritime history. that ship sank two years ago. 32 people died. retowing it back to shore and restoring it will cost $2 billion. a murder suspect is presumed dead after a shootout with police about one mile from the u.s./mexico border in texas. [ sound of gunfire ] >> officials say the 29-year- old suspect had barricaded himself in an apartment and

started shooting. two police officers were shot but are expected to recover. police say the suspect was killed. they identified him as a gang member wanted in a deadly shooting that happened last week. a big search is underway in southern california for at least one armed man who killed two people and shot a riverside county sheriff's deputy. officials in moreno valley say the deputy was responding to an assault with a deadly weapon call when he was shot yesterday afternoon. he was taken to the hospital and has been released. two miles away at a second crime scene, a 74-year-old woman was found dead in an suv. >> my mom is sitting over there dead, shot. for what reason is gonna spin me for the rest of my life. >> the woman's family says her son-in-law was found dead inside a moreno valley home. investigators are not saying much except all three crime scenes are connected. 7:17. a new memorial under

construction in washington, d.c. will be the first one dedicated to military veterans to come home with life-changing vears. the memorial will be dedicated in october. it's been worked on for 16 years. glass walls will carry inscriptions and photos telling the stories of photos from different eras. there will be bronze statues, and a grove of trees. we want to check in with sal and see what's happening on the roads. how are things looking on the san mateo bridge? >> well, they are slow. one of the reasons they are slow, there was a stalled car near pier 1. it's kind of odd for me because i guess the car was stalled in one of the lanes. but there is a shoulder so they got out there quickly and moved this car to the shoulder but traffic was slow. it's slower than it was -- it's better than it was even just a few minutes ago now that they cleared the stalled vehicle. if you want to use the dumbarton bridge, you can get

out there before the dumbarton bridge gets really full. let's talk about the demolition on highway 1 in san pedro -- the san pedro bridge. this bridge will be demolished. they are gonna make a new bridge and that's gonna put some traffic delays in this area of pacific near lindermar boulevard. as our photographer looks up, that's the road heading towards half moon bay coming down the hill. if you are coming into pacifica it might be delayed. westbound bay bridge, about a 20-minute drive time into san francisco. now let's go to mark. good morning to you. we're starting off with a bleankg ket of clouds over the bay area. looking out towards san francisco bay. even some drizzle and sprinkles out there. but the weather has been definitely strange over the past few days. yesterday, at this time we had the thunderstorms rolling through the region. we had the clouds, sprinkles. the conditions will improve.

it will be a gradual process. that begins today. for this morning, partly to mostly cloudy skies. temperatures off to a mild start. it feels almost tropical out there. into the afternoon hours, partly cloudy. temperatures, there's the eventual temperature range. mid-60s to 80s. a few rain showers up to the north, to the north of eureka. here is the satellite for santa rosa, san francisco, oakland. san jose has been relatively clear all morning long. right now you can see breaks in the clouds in the south bay closer to sunnyvale, santa clara and san jose. as far as the radar coverage, not to a lot to show you but a chance of a few sprinkles and some drizzles, especially near the coast and around the bay to start out our wednesday morning. current numbers, it's 64 in livermore. san jose checking in at 60. san francisco 64. santa rosa, 62 degrees. the overall weather pattern, there's one weak system offshore. it will scoot out to the north. partly cloudy skies this

afternoon. still some patchy coastal fog hanging out near the shore line. look what happens. high pressure rebuilds and strengthens. this is sinking air. that's warming air. definitely notice the change for tomorrow. but then into friday, warmest locations inland back up into the upper 90s around the 7, 98. a few neighbors could flirt with 100. that's the one direction we're heading. with the warming trend, fire danger will go up. the main rainband is up to eureka. into the afternoon, we should have partly cloudy skies. temperatures this afternoon, ranging from the 60s in -- right around stinson beach. warmest locations out towards fairfield, vacaville. pleasanton 83. san jose, 81. sunnyvale in the upper 70s and 79 degrees and san francisco in the lower 70s. a look ahead at your five-day forecast, temperatures definitely trending up after morning fog for your thursday.

a new hoey tell is going up near at&t park in san francisco. a developer reportedly bought the mcdonald's on third street and will tear it down. the stonebridge corporation is planning to build a 225-room hotel there. that would be an unusual site in the city. right now, just one other hotel is under construction. city leaders say demand for hotel rooms is at an all-time high. all right, tori. 7:24. san francisco voters, you will be able to weigh in on the city's proposed soda tax in

this november's election. yesterday, the board of supervisors proved putting that machine on the november ballot. the proposal imposes a 2-cent per ounce tax on sodas and other sprinks with added sugar. health advocates say this will help prevent obesity and related problems. but many business owners are worried. that includes the owner of the fizzry. they sell 900 different types of sodas. >> we know visiting the shop will hit everybody in the pocket a little bit harder. >> the liquid sugar has been shown to have more of our -- of the complications around health with type 2 diabetes. >> city economists predict this tax will cut soda tax sales by 30%. they say $30 million a year will be generated for physical education and nutrition plans at schools. soda is one of the top sources of calories for americans. that's according to the department of agriculture. the number one source, baked

overcast. abouting partly cloudy. it will be warmer tomorrow and then warm to hot as we head into your friday forecast. all of the clouds over a good portion of northern california. you will see a little bit of activity on the radar. we had to hold onto the chance of a few sprinkles or some drizzle in our short-term forecast near the coast and around the bay. i was talking about the clearer spots. that's down the south bay closer to san jose and santa clara and sunnyvale as well with just a few clouds but for the most part, fair skies. a look at the local radar, you can see a little bit of action moving across the bay approaching south san francisco. nothing too significant but enough to twigger the windshield wiper, maybe a few spots of drizzle out there as well. current numbers, 62 degrees in santa rosa. concord, 66. san jose right now checking in at 60 degrees. san jose on track to easily reach the upper 70s. i'm forecasting a high of 80 in san jose later on today. here is your forecast beginning 8:00 this morning, mostly cloudy, 60 to 65 degrees. by lunchtime, still a sun/cloud mix. 64 to 80.

in the afternoon hours, partly sunny skies. mid-60s to the mid-80s. not a big change from yesterday. you can see san francisco will go to 71. santa rosa, 81. we'll take a look at your five- day forecast. sal has an update on the roads. we're looking at a commute where traffic is still busy in many areas. i want to he somehow the bay bridge. it's -- i want to show you the bay bridge. it's backed up for five minutes. 880 is getting busier as you drive past the coliseum. it's not stop and go. it usually starts after 8:00. and we'll if that happens as you approach hyde street. westbound 92 looks better now that they have removed a stall from the bridge. as we back up, you can see the traffic on 101 on the peninsula is not all that bad as you drive south to palo alto. when up get to the south bay, the slowest traffic is on 85 and 101. northbound 280 is slow approaching 17. all of the major ways getting into the valley are slow.

i would say if i had to choose one, i would still go with 85. it doesn't have any crashes at all. it's just slow traffic. back to the desk. happening right now, president obama is right here in the bay area this morning to attend two democratic party fund-raisers. he spent last night at the intercon-- intercontinental hotel in san francisco. our cameras are being kept back because of security. he's here to raise money for democratic candidates running in the midterm elections in november. his first event is scheduled for 9:20 at the four seasons hotel in san francisco. then at noon, he will speak in los altos hills. you can see how traffic is being diverted in that area. ktvu's alex savidge will bring you a live report on everything coming up at 8:00. meantime, immigration rights activates plan to protest outside president obama's fund-raiser today in

los altos hills. that protest due to begin at 9:30 this morning. act visits o'the president's plan to despeed up deportations of the thousands of children and family who have entered the u.s. illegally in recent months. instead, they are calling for the immigrants to be treated as refugee who are feeing -- refugees who are fleeing. back in washington, d.c., spending levels are well below president obama's request for emergency funds. the bill to be unveiled would provide $2.7 billion. house republicans are working on a bill with even more limited spending, focused mostly on increasing border security. the san jose police department is taking another

unprecedented step in response to its serious staffing shortage. janine de la vega has been talking to people about a new program that will have civilians helping out the police force. so janine, what do they think? >> reporter: a lot of people are wondering if this will make a difference. will it help response times? well, the new civilian officers have not started yet. when they do, they will be handling lower priority calls. here is a picture that the police chief tweeted the first class of community officers that took place yesterday. the 25 recruits will be going through training learning how to handle a variety of situations. they will be assisting patrol by writing reports, addressing traffic complaints. they may be called to protect a crime scene. the csos are handling burglary and auto theft calls that are not ungent. we spoke to -- urgent. we spoke to people about what they thought. >> i think it's a good way to involve people in getting

really aware of what's going on with the community and help as much as they can. but on the other hand, it might also imply a risk because even though supposedly people are -- these people in the academy will be in charge of minor things, it's still -- it might might go out of their reach -- it still might go out of their reach. >> reporter: the civilian officers will not respond to calls involving active suspects. while they won't carry a gun, they will carry pepper spray in case they encounter a dangerous situation. they made the move to help boosting staffing because hundreds of officers have left in recent years in part over wage and benefit issues. the police chief says they will help free up patrol officers so they can do more proactive police work. they are supposed to be ready by september. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:36.

new this morning, a plane carrying the first bodies of the victims from malaysian flight 17, the plane that was shot down over ukraine, it has arrived in the netherlands. these are live pictures you are looking at right now in the netherlands. the coffins are being unloaded from a military transport plane that landed just 45 minutes ago. very solemn moment as they begin carrying those coffins off. there are family members there. members of the dutch royal family there as well. now, these coffins are -- obviously, the relatives are there as well. the coffins are being taken off the plane right now. the remains will undergo dna testing for identification. now, again, you can see all of the hearses that are lined up awho long side the plane. today is an official day of mourning in the netherlands. ukraine announced that russian

separatists shot down two fighter jets this morning. the map you are looking at shows it hanked just a few -- happened just a few miles east of where the malaysian passenger wet jet went down last week. we're getting reports that the pilots ejected, those jets carry up to two crew members each. while the obama administration says russia created the conditions that led to the malaysia jet being shut down, u.s. intelligence officials say ze still haven't found -- they still haven't found evidence that the russian government was involved. an 80-year-old woman is among four hurt in a violent incident in san francisco's bayview district. it happened yesterday near third street and mckinnon avenue. police say the woman was hit with flying glass when a bullet flew through a window at her apartment. she was treated for minor injuries. three other people were hurt in a car crash moments after the shooting. investigators say the people was racing away from the

shooting scene. in 90 minutes, the two men kicked in the shooting dash dark convicted in the shooting -- the two men convicted in the shooting death of a 3-year-old boy are expected to learn their fate. they were supposed to be sentenced yesterday but the attorneys' request for a new trial led to a delay. last month, the jury found the two gang members guilty of killing little carlos nava. he was hit supply a stray bullet during a gang fight outside of a market three years ago. the men could spend the rest of their lives behind bars. there is a warning about a phony park ranger in marin county. two incidents have been reported at the blightdale summit space. they say this imposter reportedly kicked a dog and took photos of two women and he gave wrong information about park policies. the man is described as a white man in his 40s with salt and

pepper hair, very fit and he was wearing black and silver bicycle clothing. officials are warning a real park ranger always wears a uniform. 7:39. a san francisco cab company is considering a drastic change in the way it does business in response to growing competition from the ride share industry. today's examiner reports the desoto cab company could cut its biggest cost, the money it pays for mel dalians -- medallions to its drivers. drivers would only be able to pick up passengers who call in to arrange a ride. the first day of school less than four weeks away now, but one east bay high school may not be ready for classes. pinole valley high school is still a construction zone. the west contra costa school board president says seismic upgrades are taking longer than

expected and there's some other problems, too. >> there's execution in making sure that all of the safety, alarms, making sure you have access to the campus for ada. >> some of the other work that needs to be done includes installing sinks and making sure drains are working. today, the school board will meet. they will talk about why the work on the school won't be finished in time for classes to start. 7:41. remember the story from earlier this month about a mystery man who surprised people at a concord grocery store while picking up their tab? now we know who he is and the reason he did it. his name is michael. this is his photo on linkedin. on july 8th he walked into the grocery store on willow pass road and paid $600 for other people's groceries. he said the reason was simple. he recently got laid off, felt

a big hack attack on a big san francisco company. pam cook is in the newsroom to let us know how the thieves got into customer accounts at stubhub. good morning. >> yes, stubhub says it's been working with law enforcement around the world for the past year on this case. now, the company has not said how much money was involved but that it detected unauthorized transactions, contacted authorities, and has refunded money to customers. this all happened in the last year. investigators from several countries are set to release more details later this morning. now, stubhub says the fraudulent charges were posted by hackers who got user information and password on -- passwords on other side. this case will unavailable an extensive network of cyber

talk baseball because i know you are watching the toll plaza and everything else. >> absolutely. we've had a lot of slow traffic coming up in the last half-hour or so. people are on the road a little later this morning. we're also looking at the commute here on the peninsula and i want to mention the traffic has become a lot busier getting into the valley. you noticed it perhaps in the little tease that we did before this segment that traffic was getting busier in the valley. that includes the east bay. that includes all of the freeways trying to get up to santa clara and sunnyvale and cupertino. 85, 280, 101, they are all slow. we haven't had any major crashes. we have had a couple of minor fender-benders. i would still think 85 is the best way especially if you are in the south valley or somewhere in between. you might want to avoid the freeway altogether. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, about a 15, 20-minute drive time into san francisco. so you do see some slow traffic there. no major issues, by the way, if you are driving through. i want to mention in pacifica.

you might see some delays. they are replacing the san pedro bridge. they are depoll mollishing it -- demolishing it. this is in the linda mar area. you could expect delays over the next few days as they do the work. traffic seems to be okay as you come down the hill out of the half moon bay area to pacifica. 7:49. let's go to mark. good morning to you. starting out the day with a lot of overcast across a good portion. bay area. the weather pattern has been unusual over the past few days with the muggy conditions and the thunderstorms yesterday. the muggy conditions, things will begin to improve for today. but we still have a lot of overcast out there. some rain showers up to the north. you will see coming up in a little bit, that we have activity on the radar as well. so the south bay in san jose reporting fair skies. more sunshine there. here we go with coverage, not a lot but enough to triggering the windshield wipers in the short term between now and 10:00 this morning. as far as the water temperatures, this is a random

report talking about the water temperatures but they are above average about 4 to 8 degrees above average. monterey bay buoy, 65 degrees. that's the water temperature. yesterday it maxed out at 67. that's the warmest temperature ever recorded by that buoy. hawaii's buoys are around 78 to 80 degrees, just by comparison. as far as our local conditions in the air right now, it's 62 degrees in santa rosa. san jose, 60. walnut creek checking in 66 degrees with partly to mostly cloudy skies. here is our live camera coming up for you. we do have the overcast out there looking out towards walnut creek. basically, mostly cloudy. winds not too much of a fact door. winds around 5 to 10 miles an hour. a warmer forecast for your thursday and then friday and saturday, warm to hot. in fact, warmest locations inland back up into the upper 90s. here is the overall weather pattern. one more weak system that will lift up to the north.

low to mid-60s and then into the afternoon hours by 12:00, a sun/cloud mix. i think we'll have stubborn low clouds and into the early portion. afternoon. still not completely clear by 3:00, partly sunny skies. there's the event temperature range. mid-60s to the upper 80s. still muggy. the conditions are improve. san francisco, 71. livermore, a forecast high of 84 degrees. we'll update the five-day forecast in a few minutes. sal has an update on traffic. good morning to you. >> we still have slow traffic on the san mateo bridge. one spot as you head out to the high rise. it has been slow. it has been stop and go. it kind of recovers again. part of the problem was an earlier stall that was cleared out. but it kind of did damage ax the traffic has not fully recovered. 20-minute drive time from hayward to the foster city side of the bridge. bay bridge is better. it's improving. there is a little bit of a backup. but it had been backed up

beyond the 880 overcrossing. right now if you approach, it should be a pretty good drive for you. san jose, 280 and 101 are very slow as we go to the maps here. 2 -- 280 but 101 slow from the capitol expressway all the way up to sunnyvale. 85 continues to be a decent alternate. by the time you get to sunnyvale, the traffic has eased up. back to the desk. happening now, president obama waking up this morning in san francisco. he will attend two democratic fund-raisers in the bay area. the first one is scheduled to start in over be a hour from now -- in over an hour from now. alex savidge is live where he's been talking to some of the hotel guests. may be an experience. >> reporter: and an exciting experience for those staying with the president. he's staying at the intercontinental hotel here in the south of, ma. it's just down howard street this way. let me show you the scene. howard blocked off entirely

here. this is a security checkpoint. san francisco police and secret service are out here checking all of the cars coming into this area here and obviously this street closure along howard between 4th and 5th is causing some traffic troubles as we pan to the left-hand side. you can see cars just backed up here into the intersection. this is gonna cause some problems throughout the morning here. the president is expected to leave the hotel for his first event about an hour from now and you can imagine there will be rolling street closures once that happens. he's only going a few blocks away to the four seasons hotel. this was the scene last night as the president flew into sfo late last night. he came straight to the hotel. he's preparing for a busy day offords. he's working to raise money for the democratic party ahead of the midterm election. he will start off at the four seasons on market where he has an event he's taking part in that's meant to raise money for the house majority political action committee. and then he heads down to a

fund-raising event in los altos hills. it's a private event that will benefit the campaign committee. some donors will be forking over more than 30 grand to get in the door. the president's visit was a big surprise to some of his fellow guests here at the intercontinental hotel in the city. we talked to a couple of tourists visiting from australia. >> obama has a good -- he has good credit in australia. >> reporter: this kind of fund- raising trip to california has been somewhat routine for the president. he's visited here quite a few times over the past few years. this is friendly territory with field polls showing half of california ups approve of the president's job -- californians approve of the president's job performance. and while he's no longer raising money for himself, he's the leader of the party and needs to help democrats hang onto the senate this november. >> what [president obama is doing is raising money for the party.

this is not money he's raising for his presidential library. i think he's raising money for his legacy. that would be the democratic party because even after president obama is no longer in office, he continues to be athe head of the democratic -- to be the head of the democratic party. >> reporter: and the bay area visit won't come without controversy. there are some protests planned along the way at some various stops today. that will include a large demonstration by immigration advocates around noon. they will be outside the silicon valley event and they will be calling on the president to deal with the humanitarian crisis unfolding around the border and pushing for him to assist the unaccompanied children coming into the u.s. right now. as we bring it back out here, you can see heavy traffic on many of the surface streets in this area. that's because of the street closures that are going on. howard closed down between 4th and 5th. we expect the president will be leaving his hotel just about an

hour from now, heading over to the four seasons a few blocks away. many streets will be closed along the way as the motorcade makes its way over to the fund- raising event. if you are in the city, keep that in mind. could be some heavy traffic you might encounter this morning. we're live this morning in san francisco, alex savidge. we have an update for you on the breaking news from asia. we've been monitoring this for the past 90 minutes. it's believed that more than 40 people have died after a trans asia plane crashed trying to make an emergency landing on an island near taiwan's western coast. the prop plane was carrying 50 adults and four children. several reports also say the plane was trying to land in heavy rains. earlier in the day, a typhoon hit that area. we just received strong very, very emotional video into the newsroom from the airport where the plane was landing. family members of the

passengers were inconso maniable when they -- inconsolable when they heard the plane had crashed. [screaming] >> this woman broke down in tears at the ticket counter when they heard. now, ktvu will keep monitoring the story. we'll bring you updates as we get them in. new this morning, the owners of an east bay convenience store say they will not open the store today after a truck slammed into the front of the building. ktvu's tara moriarty is live at the house of liquors on manor boulevard in san leandro to show us the extent of the damage and the one thing keeping that storefront from a possible collapse. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. you can see how forceful the impact of this crash was. if you take a look behind me, this is what used to be the front door. it's completely shattered. if we pan over to the right, you can see where all of these boards are.

that's actually where some bring you see, that was the -- where some brick you see. that was holding up the building. a vehicle plowed into the business. the house of liquor was open at the time. but no one inside was hurt. firefighters say the store must be inspected to make sure it is safe to open up. >> it will be under inspection later on. we'll make sure that before they return, the damage is evaluated. >> they don't know if alcohol was a factor. the driver was given a neck brace and taken to the hospital as a precaution. a city inspector did come out last night and did deem this entrance unsafe. more inspections will be needed for the rest of the building. as far as whether or not this will be able to be opened, it looks like that won't be

happening. we're live in san leandro, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police investigating a deadly shooting last night just about two blocks away from the hotel where president obama is staying. police say just after 11:00 last night, a patrol car was flagged down near 6th and mission about possible shots fired. police found a gunshot victim on the street. he was taken to san francisco general hospital. that's where he lay -- that's wherer later died. so far no arrests have been made. yesterday morning another deadly shooting took place less than a half-mile away at 6th and harrison streets. a big party that's part of the largest gay pride celebration in the nation every june may soon be coming to an end. pink saturday is a street celebration in san francisco's castro district that attracts thousands of people the night before the pride parade. the exap examiner reports the organizers of the party may cancel it due to growing violence in recent. that includes a suspected hate

crime targeting two people at pink saturday last month. organizers are considering starting and ending the event earlier and limiting the party to a smaller area, before they decide whether to outright cancel it. it's official now. if you waste water in santa clara county, you are gonna hear from the water district and the water cops. the county board of supervisors will hire ten temporary workers to be so-called water cops. they will respond to complaints to complaints about people who waste water, including washing cars while the nozzle is not off. >> some of it is not snitchy. a lot of it is, hey, my neighbor doesn't realize they are leaving it on at night. >> the water cops won't hand out citations or tickets or impose fines. instead, their job, they will

8:14 a big search is underway in southern california for at least one armed man who killed two people and shot a riverside county sheriff's deputy. officials in the moreno valley area, say the deputy was responding to an say the with a deadly weapon call when he was shot yesterday afternoon. he was taken to the hospital and has since been released. two miles away at a second crime scene, a 74-year-old woman was found dead in an suv. >> my mom is sitting over there dead shot. 8:15. the man accused of having a

homemade bomb in his san francisco apartment, he's staying in jail. yesterday, a federal judge refused a request to move ryan chamberlain out of jail into a mental hospital. chamberlain, he was arrested two days after fbi agents raided his home on russian hill. the judge said that federal prosecutors presented clear and convincing evidence that chamberlain would be dangerous if allowed to move to that hospital. 8:16. there is now a dedicated enrollment center at sfo where passengers can apply for a program called tsa precheck. the enrollment process begins online but people must visit an actual center to have their fingerprints taken and immigration status verified. once cleared, passengers still need to store their known traveler i.d. as part of their frequent flier profile, then it's likely that if tsa approves, they can use a special lane at security checkpoints. prechecked passengers do not

need to remove their shoes or coats or take items from bags. sfo's precheck office is located in the international terminal near the entrance to the b.a.r.t. station. 8:16. a new memorial under construction now in washington, d.c. will be the first dedicated to military veterans who come home with life changing injuries. it's called the american veterans disabled for life memorial. it will be dedicated in october. this project that has taken 16 years to complete will include glass walls with inscriptions and photographs telling the stories of veterans from different eras. there will be brond statues, a grove of trees and and a ceremonial flame. well, are stocks are lower. whirlpool, boeing all fell this morning. facebook is set to report its earnings of the close of the markets. the dow is currently down 9.

and just checking right now and apple's stock is actually up quite a bit. it is currently up 3% so far. the cupertino company reported earnings after the closing bell. revenue grew by 6% which is not as strong as most analysts have forecast. global iphone sales were stronger than expected. but ipad sales were cloeer. jfnlts krewe is getting slammed in social -- j. krewe is getting slammed in social media for the new pant sized. they are introducing triple zero pants which fit women with a 23-inch waist. critics say it's insensitive to those sensitive to body image. u.s. shoppers can only get the triple-0 sized pants online.

unusual over the past few days. feeling muggy, feeling tropical. still off to a warm start. still tracking sprinkles. we'll start off with partly to mostly cloudy skies. into the afternoon hours skies becoming partly cloudy. the developing headline. it will be aer forecast -- a warmer forecast. as far as the latest on the satellite earth. rain showers to the north, to the north of eureka, a big batch of high cloud moving into the central portion of the state. we have the low clouds filling in near the coast, near santa rosa, right around the bay. san jose not reporting as much overcast, partly cloudy skies in the south bay all morning long. current numbers off to a mild start out there. santa rosa right now checking in at 64 degrees. san francisco downtown, mid-60s and san jose currently 63. the overall weather pattern change is little for today. this is moving up to the north. as a result, the clouds willist will up to the north.

i think we'll have stubborn low clouds and into the afternoon hours. high pressure gradually returns. this will be the source of warming. really kicks in for thursday. then by friday. temperatures inland easily back up into the mid, possibly the upper 90s. around 97 to 98. even the bayside location is approaching the 80s. noticeable warmup. beginning tomorrow. kicks in by friday. here's our forecast models. we'll still have some patchy fog hugging a good portion of the fog line. that could be regrouping. all of the higher clouds will be lifting out into northern california. forecast highs, we'll go with petaluma, 84. oakland, 76. livermore, 84. these temperatures will check in right about 3:00 or 4:00 this afternoon. san francisco lower 70s off to the mild start this morning. here is a look ahead to your five-day forecast. we'll gradually warm things up into thursday. the real warming kicks in by friday and into the weekend.

near at&t park in san francisco. the chronicle reports a developer bought the mcdonald's on third street and plans to tear it down. the stonebridge corporation plans to build a 225-room hotel which would be unusual to see in the city. right now there's only one hotel under construction. demand for hotel rooms is at an all-time high. that will probably increase when the exspn shawn of the moscone center is finished in -- expansion of the moscone nip sent is finished -- moscone center is finished. san francisco voters will be able to weigh in on the soda tax in the november election. the board of supervisors approved putting it on the ballot. it imposes a 2-cent per ounce tax on soda and other drinks with added sugar. health advocates say it will help prevent obesity and related problems. but many business owners are worried. that includes the owner of the

as you drive through. this has not been any -- has not seen any improvement. it's unfortunate. we still have a pretty big drive time coming in. 37 minutes from grant line to the 680 exchange. the traffic in the south of market area is very slow because of the president's visit. they have some streets cordoned off, howrt between fourth and fifth -- howard between fourth and fifth and we're getting reports that traffic is very slow. you might want to think about using transit instead. back to the desk. the san jose police department is taking another step now to respond to the serious police staffing shortage. janine de la vega just talked to the police about a new program this. this one will have civilians helping the police. what are they saying? what do they think? >> reporter: well, they said, you know, the police department is at critically low staffing levels. they know this. that's why they are bringing in

these officers to help fill in the gaps. here is a photo that the police chief tweeted of the first academy class that took place yesterday. we're told 25 recruits in the group includes 12 women. they will assist reports, do crowd control during special events and may be called to protect a crime scene. they are handling burglary and auto theft calls that aren't urgent. >> these are cold calls, calls that happen maybe several hours to a couple of days prior to the reporting party calling the police. so you are talking about a burglary that occurred sometime ago, the residents know nobody is inside. maybe it's a stolen vehicle, a theft, a minor or a noninjury

vehicle police. things like that where there are any suspects present and they are just going out to simply take a police report. >> reporter: the department says the civilian officers will not be armed with a gun but will carry pepper spray in case they encounter a dangerous situation. they will not be able to write citations, tow cars or make arrests. officers have left in recent years due to part over wage and benefit issues. they will help to free up patrol officers to do more proactive police work. they are supposed to be ready to be deployed into the field by september 14th. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. 8:34. in antioch, nom people are -- some people are not impressed by crime stats showing violent crimes are dune compared to last year. last year, the police department released their midyear report. the report said as of july 21st, there were 50 shootings and four homicides. during the same time last year,

there were 51 shootings and seven homicides. howv, long-time antioch residents said the violence is getting worse and immediate action is needed. the police blame drugs and gang for most of the crimes. an 80-year-old woman is among four hurt in a violent incident in the bayview district. it happened yesterday near third street and mckicken avenue -- mckinnon avenue. police say the woman was hit by flying glass when a bullet flew through. she was treated for minor injuries. three people were hurt in a car crash moments after the shooting. investigators say the people in one of the cars was racing away from the shooting scene. the two men convicted in the shooting death of a 3-year- old oakland boy are expected to find out their punishment. lawrence denard and willie attorneys were scheduled to be sentence -- torrence were

scheduled to be sentenced yesterday. but their attorneys' appeal led to to the delay -- led to the delay. there is a warning about a phony park ranger in a rin county -- in marin county. two incidents have been reported at the blight open summit space reserve. the imposter reportedly kicked a dog and took photos of two women and he gave wrong information about park policies. the imposter described as a white man in his 40s with salt and pepper hair and is very fit wearing black and sim ver bicycle clothing. the officials say real park rangers always wear uniforms. developing news out of ukraine. the defense ministry says pro- russia rubbles shot down two

jets today, it happened not far from where flight 17 was shot down last thursday. it comes as bodies of victims from mh-17 arrive in the netherlands today. kyla campbell is in washington, d.c. to break down the developments for us. >> reporter: tori, we're taking a live look right now at the netherlands where dozens of mh- 17 victims arrived on military planes. the military carried each coffin to an awaiting hearse and the victims will need to be positively identified. also today, two ukrainian military jets were shot down in a separatists controlled area of eastern ukraine. it happened about 20 miles from where mh-17 was shot down last week. today, british investigators are examining the black boxes and now there's mounting pressure for russian president, putin, to be up front about any role russia played in this. intelligence say russia

provided the missile launcher that took down the plane. >> we've seen a flow of weapons across the border for weeks that we've been working to document. >> slat mirror putin is literally getting a way with murder and we're doing very little in response. >> reporter: the white house has learned that putin could face additional sanctions but the officials want the european union to get on board first. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. now to the middle east crisis. secretary of state, john kerry, trying to negotiate a cease- fire between israel and hamas. we have new video of him taking hands with mahmoud abbas, president of the palestinian authority. they talked for about an hour. earlier this morning, kerry flew from cairo egypt to tel aviv, israel. kerry will meet with israel's prime minister today. they will talk about trying to find a solution between the two sides. while kerry flew aboard a military jet american and some

european commercial planes, they are still prohib ited this morning -- prohibited from flying into tel aviv because of safety concerns. the faa's flight ban started at 9:15 pacific time yesterday morning. it's supposed to run for at least 24 hours to allow the aviation administration to examine and evaluate the situation. earlier today, germany's largest airline lufthansa said it would not fly to tel aviv for at least another day. 8:39. former secretary of state, hillary clinton, is taking part in an event this morning in oakland aimed at encouraging parents to talk, read and sing to their children. the campaign is called talking is teaching. the bill hillary and chelsey foundation is partnering with several other organizations in the campaign to help parents understand the importance of talking, reading and singing to children every day from birth. this morning's event is being

crash a happened today -- that happened today. 11 people were rescued. 47 others are believed to be dead in the crash. the tran asia plane crashed while making a second emergency landing attack in strong winds and heavy rains from a typhoon. back here at home, a slrd liquor store will probably closed. a truck slammed into the storefront last night. it shattered glass, dented a brick section of the house of liquors on manor boulevard. no one was hurt. that driver was taken to the hospital. and president obama is in san francisco this morning. he spent the night at the intercontinental hotel. he's scheduled to go to a fund- raiser in about 30 minutes at the four seasons hotel in san francisco. alex savidge is joining us live outside of the president's hotel with the big push for theforders before the november elections.

boorm -- good morning, alex. >> reporter: the president is on the west coast working to raise money ahead of the mid terms later 0 p this year. he's -- later this year. he's staying here at the intercontinental hotel. he arrived late last night. let me show you the scene behind us. this is howard at 4th street. the barricades are up. san francisco police are here. the secret service is out here as well. there's tight security, anyone trying to get into the hotel, the cars are being searched, trucks are being searched this morning and because of this road closure. howard shut down between fourth and fifth, you can see the result here heavy traffic on many of the surrounding streets in this area. keep that in mind. the president is expected to leave his hotel shortly to head to his first fund-raising event at the first seasons a few blocks away from here. the president arrived late last night here at sfo and he does have a very busy day of fund- raising on tap today as he works to raise money for the democratic party. he will start off at the four seasons. that's already he will be

taking part in an event that's meant to raise cash for the house majority political action committee. following that visit, the president will head to the south bay, he has a fund- raising event in los altos hills that will benefit the democratic congress am campaign committee. some coners will then $30,000 to get in the door. political analysts say he need to help democrats hang onto the senate and california is the place to come for cash. >> this is where the money is. this is what willie said, why do you rob banks? this is where the money is. prom has relied on california to raise funds for his original election, for the mid terms of 2010 and for his re-election and now for the midterm election of 2013. >> reporter: naturally, the president will be met by protesters today at some of his stops. immigration activists will be outside the president's silicon valley event today.

they will be calling on the president to deal with the humanitarian crisis unveiling across the border asking for him to help those along the border, those children. if you have purchased tickets, chances are you've been on stubhub. a big announcement in two hours could have you checking your online activity. pam cook is in the newsroom with the news of a big hack attack. >> reporter: there's good advice in here as well. at 11:00 our time, stubhub along with law enforcement from around the world will unveil details about a big security breach. now the company has not said how much money was involved but that it detected unauthorized transactions over the last

year, then contacted authorities and customers. investigators from several countries are now set to release more details that will happen later this morning but stubhub says the fraudulent charges were posted by hackers who got user information and password on other websites. stubhub is owned by ebay. it says this is a problem because many people use the same passwords at many different retailers at other websites. when hackers get in that website, they try the information on others. you might want to consider when picking and choosing your passwords. this case will unveil an extensive network of cyber thieves working together. we'll have more on that announcement later this afternoon. pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:48. let's bring sal back. you have highway 101 under control, sal? >> we're looking at it in san francisco, it looks good on 101 approaching the 80 split.

if you are coming here on the freeway, it looks good. as alex mentioned, i've mentioned it as well. we've been covering the president's visit downtown south of market. the streets are going to be jammed because of the president's motorcade. he's gonna go over to another hotel on market street and then will visit the south bay. wherever the president moves around, they do close streets not to allow people to get too close to the motorcade. let's take a look at westbound bay bridge. it's about a 10, 15-minute drive into san francisco. still a 37-minute drive which is kind of surprising on westbound 580 as you drive through the livermore valley over to this area in dublin. it's also slow on the dublin grade into castro valley. let's go to mark. we're starting out once again this wednesday morning. a lot of overcast. the humidity -- it's been a big issue over the past few days. still muggy but the conditions will begin to improve. it's not going to be an instant

process. but you notice somewhat of an improvement. most of the rain showers up to the north but we still have a lot of overcast near the coast and bay. even a few spotty sprinkles out there and some spotty drizzle. they are not showing up on the radar right now. but you might encounter a few drops out there. it's mild in san francisco. 66 degrees. just a reflection of how muggy it could be as well as the temperatures. walnut creek, 71. and san jose checking 63 degrees. for today, we have all of the cloud cover this morning, skies become partly cloudy but i think some stubborn overcast near the coast and right around the bay as you can see all of the building clouds in this picture. tomorrow warmer forecast, barming trend continues, really kicks in, in fact. by friday into saturday. the overall weather pattern, there's one week system to the north and west. this will lift out to the north throughout the day today. with that, skies becoming partly cloudy all of the thunderstorm moves out as well and then into the weekend,

beginning tomorrow. but by friday, high pressure returns. we will warm up the numbers. by friday, warmest locations will be in the upper 90s. with that fire danger goes up as well. here's our forecast models. we have the fog redeveloping near the coast throughout the da. we already have low cloud at the coast. warmest locations approaching the 80s. there's the orange contour. the beaches in the 60s for later on today. santa rosa, 81. fairfield, 84. oakland tops out at 76. livermore, 84. once again, still another muggy stay out there. it will take a little bit of time for that moisture, the humidity to kind of clear out. san francisco 71. and half moon bay 66 degrees. a look ahead to your five-day forecast with your weekend always in view, we'll warm up the numbers by thursday. look what happens on friday. temperatures inland back up to the mid- to upper 90s. even the bay side locations are april proeching the -- approaching the 80s. >> it won't be as muggy. >> hopefully not. a mystery man's generosity at a concord grocery store.
