reckless driver and chp officers on northbound 880 this morning. the pursuit ended 9:00 at 23rd avenue and oakland as officers tase the driver. it certainly snarled the morning commute. good afternoon, i'm tori campbell. kate has more. has 880 cleared? >> reporter: at this point traffic appears to be traveling at highway speeds or even better in some cases. if you've ever traveled this stretch of 880 during the morning commute you know it can be slow on any given day. so the driver was essentially playing bumper cars at slow speeds, now facing hit-&-run charges and resisting arrest. despite the slow speeds of the pursuit less than 25 miles per hour it ended in dramatic fashion along northbound i-880. >> i'm scared. so scared. >> reporter: joan lyung watched chp officers break the window of this toyota corolla

near 23rd avenue and oakland, pull out the driver and subdue him with a taser. >> he was still combative and put in handcuffs and taken to the hospital. >> reporter: the man is identified as in his early 30s. >> we know his car was involved in at least three collisions. so the car was damaged earlier. >> reporter: 911 calls for a reckless driver along 580 in castro valley prompted the pursuit. lyung and others made sure the driver didn't get away. >> moving, moving, slow motion, i just follow him. >> reporter: no one was hurt but chp is still working to put a total to the path of destruction. there could be more than three cars hit as the pursuit traveled through several jurisdictions. >> sometimes it takes longer to link the collisions together. >> he's still in the hospital but expected to be booked sometime this afternoon. chp is investigating intoxication as a possible

contributing factor in the collisions. we are still looking into his criminal history. live in oakland, katie uteths -- a 40-year-old driver involved in a car crash that killed his passenger now under arrest on suspicion of dui and vehicular manslaughter. it happened near great america parkway in santa clara. officers say steven hunt, the driver, was driving a black bmw when he lost control. >> sounds like they overturned possibly four, or five times and crossed the roadway on this road. >> reporter: hunter from sunnyva let's suffered serious injuries and is in the hospital. the 45-year-old unidentified passenger was declared dead at the scene. san jose firefighters investigating a suspicious fire at a middle school. jana -- janine de la vega has more, to

describe what has administrators concerned. >> reporter: good afternoon. you can see a fence has been put up around this building at davis middle school. which is right off of monterey highway. this is the third fire that the school has had in the past two months. this one started on the roof where you can see that burned out area. it was dawn around 5:30 when smoke was seen rising from davis middle school. this side of campus hasn't been used all summer so it was a surprise when administrators got the call of a fire here. >> it's frightening whenever we have a situation that has an pact on students. >> reporter: firefighters arrived to find flames in the attic of this multipurpose room. they were able to knock it down in under a half-hour. they worked quickly to move the classroom furniture and equipment out from under the area where it was burning and covered it with tarps. they looked for signs of vandalism or graffiti because a fire at a school can raise red flags. >> as far as as an educational facility is, it requires an

extensive investigation. at this time the cause is undetermined. >> reporter: arson investigators arrived later and determined it was suspicious because it started on the roof, an area with no obvious heat source. then the school's history. last month, there were two fires here. trash fire where the cause was undetermined, another roof fire at the auditorium. fire officials say that may have been started by people who climbed up and started smoking. the superintendent is concerned about securing the school and access to the roof. >> we're going to re-evaluate and look at seeing what we can do to help secure some of that. >> reporter: investigators are still working on a cause, school district officials say that they plan on fixing the damage and that it will be repaired in time for when school starts on august 18th. reporting live from san jose, janine d la vega. thank you. two people are recovering after being shot in a drive-by shooting in vallejo last night

and police say it's a miracle two young children nearby weren't injured. it happened on bw williams drive. police say two shooters opened fire on a family as they were getting into their car. a 16-year-old boy in the passenger's seat was shot in the leg. the man who was strapping his two kids into the back seat was also shot. investigators are still not sure why the family was targeted. >> all parties involved claim that they know absolutely nothing about who would be shooting up the house. >> reporter: investigators say the shooters fired more than a dozen times and some stray bullets even landed in the front wall of the home. police are searching for a black car, a dodge charger or magnum that was seen driving away after the shooting. a man who was stabbed and shot on sunday in west san jose died this morning. and one person is in custody. it happened just west of winchester boulevard. the motive for the slaying and

identities of the victim and suspect have not been released. the death marks the 20th homicide so far this year in san jose. we're learning new details about a man who was killed in an officer-involved shooting in sunnyvale last month. turns out he may be tied to the death of as many as four women. ktvu's sal castaneda talks about how the deaths stayed off police radar until recently. >> reporter: good afternoon. according to the san jose mercury news a man who was killed when confronting police last month is suspected of playing a role in the deaths of the four women he befriended before they died or disappeared. >> reporter: police say 53-year-old glen gregg seen here was shot and killed when brandishing a bb gun at officers who had come to speak to him about the suspicious deaths of several women he knew. armed with warrants they tried to confront him on the morning of june 5th when they say he pulled the weapon.

police shot him, he died at the hospital. molly frankenmount who greggs called his girlfriend has been missing since last year and given three other women died after being involved with him investigators suspect he was responsible. one of the women who died suspiciously after involvement with him was a 50-year-old homeless woman who like frankenmount had been living with griggs when she disappeared and her body found in a recycling center shortly after he reported her missing. after all four women died, miss say he may have taken advantage of the women known to have problems with alcohol. i just got a text from a reporter who says she now has her hands on the same documents. molly's last text messages to family indicated she was afraid of griggs, police say it may never be known his full involvement in the deaths of the women. molly is still missing and police say she's assumed to be a victim of foul play.

live in the newsroom, sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. to developing news of an air algerie flight that has gone missing over the african nation of mali. the france foreign minister said the flight likely crashed but so far no trace of the plane has been found. there was bad weather at the time the plane vanished. the airline says there are 110 passengers and six crew members on board. half of the passengers are french along with canadian, swiss and ukrainian citizens. there doesn't appear to be any americans on board. developing news from ukraine where the prime minister announced he's resigning. this comes amid concerns the coalition government there could collapse and ukraine of course has been in turmoil due to the ongoing dispute with russia and last week's downing of malaysia airlines flight 17. more victims from that plane crash arrived in the netherlands this morning. two military transport planes brought back 74kov tins today

-- coffins today. 40 broadcast yesterday. officials hope by tomorrow all the remains covered so far will be flown to the netherlands for identification. in taiwan, government inspectors arrived this morning at the site where a passenger plane went down yesterday. the transasia airways flight was on its second emergency landing attempt in heavy rain when it crashed. 10 people survived but 48 others were killed. a government director says visibility at the airport was about a mile which is considered acceptable. the black boxes have been sent to taiwan's capital city for analysis. it was a bombshell when we reported that state senator yee was facing corruption charges. now we're learning more about the undercover praiption and how it involved briefly the san francisco mayor ed lee. the bay area warm-up is underway. mark d mayo will tell you when we begin to feel the double digit

a new report reveals that the fbi corruption

investigation that snared the state senator also targeted four-time san francisco mayor ed lee and according to the san francisco chronicle federal agents contributed $20,000 to lee's campaign as part of an undercover sting operation. the operation also looked into 49ers great joe montana and possibly redevelopment deal but the paper reports that the feds came up empty against montana and mayor lee. however the investigation did lead to indietle against 29 people -- indictments against 29 people. a bay area mother is behind bars accused of leaving her two children in a hot car while she gambled at a casino monday night. 37-year-old faley winnette of oakland is now facing child endangerment charges. police say they found her two children ages 2 and 3 still strapped in their car seats in the locked car parked across the street from the casino 5le

0 in -- 580 in livermore. >> the typical call we'll get, someone ran into the grocery store to buy a gallon of milk. this is not the case. this is for her pleasure, gambling and leaving her two small kids, that can't fend for themselves, in a potential hot box. >> police say the temperature inside the car already rose to more than 80 degrees during the 35 minutes that the children were left alone in the car. the two kids were not physically hurt and are now in protective custody. in a few hours we're expected to learn more about the repair job to fix the problem with the new bay bridge. a committee will be held to discuss the latest report on the bolts on the eastern span. caltrans says it will cost $1.5 million to fix the steel rods that anchor the span's massive cable system. recent tests found those rods could be jolted in a big quake possibly threatening the stability of the entire bridge.

more trouble for the housing authority in richmond. now there are serious allegations of corruption allegedly committed by a manager. the richmond police department is now investigating deborah holter, the maintenance manager. the city manager says she's on administrative leave while police try to determine what happened to $340,000 that was set aside for maintenance. >> her husband was affiliated with one of the vendors who received a disproportionate amount of work and money from the housing authority. so there's an obvious conflict of interest. >> ktvu went to her home and her husband said she was away. he would not comment on camera but says she's not guilty of doing anything other than the scope of her job. earlier this year ktvu cameras found mold, broken elevators and pest infestations at apartment complexes managed by the richmond housing authority. the future of san francisco's flower mart is in doubt.

developer kilroy realty says it agreed to buy the mart at 6th and brandon streets, the nearly two acre site is just blocks away from other office developments and there are only four other ones in the country. san francisco's is profitable generating $90 million in sales annually. vendors say they don't know what will happen to the businesses if the mart closes. one of the east bay's most popular swimming holes is closed indefinitely because of a rare toxic algae bloom. public access to oakland's lake was cut off a week ago after tests found a blue/green algae bloom contained high toxic levels. it poses health risks to people and dogs and can cause rashes, vomiting and flu-like symptoms. park officials are using a product to strip the lake of phosphorus, a mineral that nourishes algae. one lake was testing

positive for high levels of e. coli. the district will resample the water everyday until it's safe to reopen the beach. a new poll shows support from california voters for a new water bond proposal on the november ballot. the survey from the public policy institute of california finds 51% of those questioned approve of the bond. just 26% opposed. the 11.1 billion-dollar bond would direct new funds towards water storage projects. governor brown favors a more scaled down bond measure that would cost about $6 billion. as you step outside probably in a few seconds you can feel the warmth. advertised warm-up on track. in fact most of the bay area under mostly sunny skies. this is the view in san jose, clear skies, dry hills and fire

danger will be a concern the next few months but especially with the shortterm heat that we are expecting. right now on live storm tracker 2 no storms, all the monsoonal moisture moved out of the state. we have low clouds and fog way down to the south, towards southern california and closer to sphrean but we just mostly have the clear skies and even for san francisco enjoying the sunshine, san francisco already around 70 degrees. in fact here's a look at some of the current numbers. san francisco warmed up to 71. santa rosa 82. livermore already in the 80s. these numbers inland in the 80s now on track to reach the 90s later on today. eventually on track to approach 100 degrees, not for today but that will be for tomorrow. today though we have the warmer forecast, temperatures up a good four to eight degrees over yesterday's highs. another camera shot, i was talking about the clear skies toward the coastline, in fact if that is the case toward the golden gate bridge and the -- area just outside the camera

frame. we'll have some, just minor changes into both saturday and sunday. lots of sunshine, 70s, 80s and 90s as high pressure strengthening off-shore and pushes over the bay area. things heat back up. there's the range for friday, 75 to 100 degrees fire danger, we talked about that, will be going up no red flag warning, no strong winds in the forecast, temperatures inland tomorrow on either side of 100 degrees. humidity levels dropping down to around 20%. winds a bit of a north wind increasing at 10 to possibly 15 miles an hour. forecast highs this afternoon, heading towards that hot friday forecast, today though you can see santa rosa 91. fairfield 93. more 90s showing up in the forecast maps this afternoon. around the bay close to the 80-degree mark. in fact that will be the case in hayward, san jose tops out 86. gilroy 84. and santa cruz back to the 80s. san francisco downtown in the mid-70s. could be approaching the 80-degree mark as we head into

your friday. here is a look ahead. your five-day forecast with the weekend always in view. temperature tomorrow will continue to spike, inland neighborhoods near 100 degrees around the bay, upper 80s to near 90. even the coast back up into the 70s with just some patchy fog to start the day. a little cooler on saturday especially near the bay. we'll shave the temperatures a good four to eight degrees. notice the hot weather pattern kind of remains in place in the 5-day forecast. in fact we could heat back up next week. >> it's more of a typical summer pattern. >> yes. especially when you get the 25, 30-degree temperature spread. at least we have options here. more than two dozen pilots are winging their way to the midwest, part of the 50th annual hayward air rally. the pilots took off this morning. they must navigate their way through 40 required cherpts on the way to oshkosh, wisconsin. they are allowed to use gps but

stocks are flat in afghanistan afternoon trading as -- are flat in afternoon trading. two economic reports out today. weekly applications for unemployment aid dropped to the lowest level since february 2006 while new home sales plunged 8% in june. the dow is down 10. nasdaq down 3 and s&p is flat. facebook stock is up 5.5% this afternoon after a good quarrel report -- quarterly report. a facebook study shows users spend an average of 40 minutes a day on the social networking site. about the same amount of time americans spend each day on chores and personal grooming but the ceo zuckerberg says he wants more. since an average american spends nine hours a day engaging in some form of digital media and he would like facebook to claim a larger

share. apple is releasing a beta version called yosemite. it was unveiled at the worldwide developers conference in san francisco last month. now looking for one million mac users to sign up to test it. apple plans to release the final version sometime this fall. a delegation from san francisco is heading to colorado today to discuss the possibility of a bid to host the summer olympics. giants ceo larry baer and the olympic swimmer ann cribbs are making the trip. the u.s. olympic committee may decide next year if it will submit a bid to host the 2024 summer olympic games. as we told you earlier bay area transit officials are ming today to -- meeting today to discuss the repairs on the new bay bridge. a 1.5-million project to fix steel rods that could be compromised in an earthquake.
