hot weather returns to the bay area with warnings tonight about unhealthy air and increased fire danger. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. fire danger is on the rise with 100-degree temperatures in tomorrow's bay area forecast. we have team coverage this evening. our chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking the numbers he says even san francisco is going to heat up tomorrow. we begin with azenith smith, she's in gilroy with the precautions being taken for the start of the annual garlic festival tomorrow. azenith. >> reporter: take a look. there's already rvs parked with visitors for this festival and

they're right by all of this dry grass. we're mid-way through the fire season and grass like this will likely not get any drier so the potential for fire is great. it's the dog days of summer and it's supposed to get drier. >> this would go up in a half hour. this will be toast. >> reporter: calfire is also on alert given the high temperature could mean increased fire activity. this year's drought not helping. >> as the drier conditions come through like this weekend we're going to experience as everybody is. yeah, a little more attuned to what's going on and a little more active as far as paying attention to how the weather is going to affect the fire conditions. >> reporter: police stopped this weekend it's been a long and active fire season for

calfire alone. most started by carelessness. the dry grass can easily start fires. those are the type of things we're looking for. back at the garlic festival, half a dozen large shade canopies and even rain rooms are set up as well as two water stations if needed. >> we even have water stations for people to get hydrated. >> reporter: we're told emergency personnel will be on hand at the festival and the children's area will also be shaded. live in gilroy, azenith smith, ktvu channel 2 news. we saw an example of the fire danger when a small grass fire broke out near interstate 280. that fire is now out but authorities say kinata road in wood side will replain closed

for about the next hour. the tree fell on to power lines sparking the flames just below quinata college. the fire broke two acres and also knocked out power to 7,500 people. tonight pg & e says only a few dozen customers are still without power and that they should have it back by mid- night. we talked about it last night, how much you were going to notice the heat up. it's still warm out there right now 75 in fairfield and almost 80 in antioch. that's really going to elevate our temperatures and our fire danger as well. humidity is going to be cut in half. it was around 40 or 50% with all that subtropical air. now we're down to 20% as we head into tomorrow and light winds. so fire danger goes up again. and likely to see a few more

showers. we'll talk about the extended forecast and it keep it is heat going for a little while. we'll see you back here after the break. and tomorrow is prompting a spare the air day. it is the fifth one so far this summer. district officials are urging people to keep their cars at home if possible. they're asking you to walk, bike, car pool or take public transit instead. and as the weather heats up, there are warning signs posted at two bay area lakes. at 10:30, the health risks that has some beaches closed and others with warnings. it happened shortly after 7:00 at brook dale park off of high street. that park was filled with people playing softball, soccer and basketball. one mother said she has had enough with all the violence in the area.

>> i've already put in the lease this is another reason why i'm going to leave. these kids should be able to play in the park safely without having to worry about being shot while playing at the park. >> reporter: neighbors told us he's a teenager. police say someone from the park fired back at the car. it's not clear if that person was the victim or someone else. in san francisco there's a new plan to fight crime in the bay view after a string of recent homicides there. and the plan draws on resources from a variety of city agencies. not just the police department. ktvu's amber lee live in city hall after she talked to the woman who's behind the effort. amber. >> reporter: frank, supervisor cohen is taking action after four homicides in the bay view just this month alone. we found frustration today when we spoke with people in the community. this building on third and nucomb is a home for seniors. a shattered window on the second floor is evidence of gun

violence in the bay view. >> we used to have fistfights. we haven't seen fistfights in years. these kids fix their problems with gunfire. >> it's heartbreaking. can't sleep at night. >> reporter: maliya cohen who represents the bay view plans to introduce legislation to tpoeurpl a gang violence task force. in addition to law enforcement she's calling on the school district to work with newly released inmates and guns and youths. it's a city wide problem. >> that's the whole sick thing about this violence is that it touches all of us. even if we're walking down the street or riding or minding our own business. >> i support her on that,. >> reporter: this long time bay view resident applauds the supervisor.

he says new businesses and development have improved the area asthetically but not the gangs. he says they need help from the community in fighting and solving the epidemic of violence. amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. the city of san francisco has reached an agreement to pay $15 million to the husband and young daughter of a woman who was run over and killed at holly park. 35-year-old christine savanamere was relaxing on the grass with her baby and dog when she run over by a city pickup. bernaski was later arrested and charged with vehicle manslaughter and felony hit-and- run. the city and victim's family have reached a proposed settlement of $15.1 million. >> it's been the city's hope

all along that as far as the legal matter goes we would be able to resolve this amicably and we're grateful we were able to do that. >> reporter: the rec and parks department has signed off on that. it now goes to the city council for approval. the algeria jet took off, it disappeared over mali on its way to algeria. earlier today, a search plane said the jet plane had been spotted. it's believed the weather played a factor in the crash. most of the passengers were french. it doesn't appear there were any americans on the plane. t in the my middle east at least 15 pelestinians died in a shelter when it came under fire. some 200 others were wounded

and rushed to a hospital. most are women and children. families had taken shelter in a school. the u.n. was planning to move them when the shells hit. it's not clear who's responsible. israel says it did not target the school and suggests that hamas rockets may have fallen short. hamas blames israel. >> free free palestine. in oakland dozens of people rallied in front of the federal business in support of pelestinians in gaza. in the last 17 days nearly 800 pelestinians and 30 israelis have been killed. the san jose police union issued a statement today in response to a formal complaint about excessive force. that complaint was made by a graduation speaker at san jose state. nathaniel howard spoke at the school's black graduation

ceremony in may. hours afterward howard says he was beaten by police because he questioned how they treated a friend who was urinating in public. this is cell phone video of the incident. howard was not charged with a crime. the president of the police officers association says simple, clear and reasonable commands from a police officer should always be followed. it is always unfortunate when those commands are not followed and it puts police officers and those we are sworn to protect in potential danger. a professor from san francisco state is facing serious charges tonight as ktvu's david stevenson says he is accused of secretly recording several students using the bathroom at his home. >> reporter: he thought accounting from 2006 up until last friday. today former college of business associate mark landis is facing 15 counts of

misdemeanor breach of privacy. >> i think it's creepy. >> he should be punishable for violating students because he's in a position of power. >> reporter: the investigation began last november. prosecutors said landis would frequently host students and that a male student discovered a camera disguised as a tissue box similar to this one. >> the camera was pointed in a way that when people were using the facility it would be pointed directly at their gentiles. >> reporter: gascon says it took time to identify the people on the video landis was booked wednesday and released on bond. we were unable to reach him on his phone. his web page was taken down this afternoon. a university spokesperson told us he resigned last friday and counseling is available for

since all door boarding became legal in 2012. we shared the results of ktvu two week investigation with munni head of enforcement. >> does it concern you that we did not bump into a single inspector. >> obviously it does. we have a study that shows almost 1,500 people board without paying. >> that's a big problem. >> it is. >> reporter: there may be a trade off for letting people get on for free. on average 65 people an hour are boarding munni. munii says it saves about one second per passenger with back door boarding. and that adds up. >> people are happy to be able to get to their destination quicker. because we don't have to stay at our stops for an extended period. >> reporter: ktvu finally did find those inspectors right outside of munni headquarters.

study and they're still crunching the numbers on that. the oversight committee for construction of the new eastern span of the bay bridge approved another $3 million in spending for bridge fixes. the panel heard from the main panel that include rusting white paint and misaligned steel rods. also a new issue emerged today. rods and rails for scaffolding that may need to be reinstalled. 32 of those bolts were failed when they were tightened. >> i'm coming out to say that those are safe. >> reporter: engineers are testing bolts for seismic safety and other issues such as stress, corrosion and aging. the testing should be complete by the end of the year. california governor jerry brown is heading into the general election this november with a lot of money to spend on the campaign. financial statements show that the governor spent just

$270,000 during the primary but during the first six months of the year he also raised an additional $5.7 million. that means his campaign fund now totals $22.4 million. his republican challenger neil cashkari has not filed his financial statement as of yet. the latest poll shows california governor with a 19 point lead. 33% support kashkari. temperatures outside right now are warmer than they were last night but they actually feel cooler because the humidities have dropped off quite a bit. we had a lot of humidity out here last week. that humidity has left and high pressure moves in and we're left with a very warm day tomorrow. it was warmer today. temperatures tomorrow are going to make it easily into the low 100s. radars are spinning they're not showing anything. and they're also know showing any fog.

there might be a little patchy fog tomorrow morning. but for the most part, at this hour, this time of year it's unusual to have a fog pretty close. the clouds are not even on shore. that makes it a little tougher for the fog to form. oakland is blowing 15-mile an hour sustained winds. those winds have actually helped cool sea temperature. so they were really chilly out here. these temperatures yesterday and the day before in the upper 60s. we had mid-60s offshore here. the on shore winds have actually created more up swell. so seashore temperatures have cooled. temperatures are going to warm. daytime highs tomorrow are easily going to make it into the upper 90s and low 100s. overnight lows kind of mild. upper 50s low 60s. as you go through the bay area microclimates tomorrow, 80s downtown san francisco. that's hot in downtown san francisco. upper 80s and low 90s around the bay. fremont and berkeley and oakland. and then upper 90s and low 100s in the inland bay valleys.

was shot down over eastern ukraine last week. officials say it's likely some bodies still haven't been recovered. and witnesses say that the plane crash site has been abandoned. meantime british investigators have started their investigation of the two black box data recorders. police are trying to trace a loaded shotgun that was found by children hidden underneath a school building in santa rosa. cristina rendon tells us witnesses think it's a community gun that was stashed by gang members that live near by. >> reporter: children playing came upon a gun. the kids found this fully

which is really, really sad. >> reporter: the mayor of gang prevention task force is going to be here in just over a week as part of their annual event talking to kids in the community about doing the right thing like those children did when they reported that gun to an adult. reporting in santa rosa, cristina rendon. california attorney general camila harris says she's hoping to find lawyers to represent minors from central america at their immigration hearings. harris today called the surge of unaccompanied minors illegally crossing the u.s. border a humanitarian crisis. harris said the federal government is responsible for dealing with immigration issues. she also said it's a shame that congress hasn 't acted yet on immigration reform. he lost his battle with cancer. coming up, a tribute to a

of the algae there. >> reporter: given that east bay park says it has never closed any lake for a green blue algae outbreak before is understandable people were surprised by the warning signs. >> we saw that sign that says it was closed for the water quality. we don't want to test that, we're going to go home. >> reporter: one question that remains is when will the lake be safe to reopen this kind of toxic blue-green algae typically lasts a few days. this has been going on for about a week. the question for now remains unclear. in oakland, ken pritchett ktvu news. and the closure at the east bay is much different. they believe bird droppings created a lower level of

bacteria. swimmers were angry they hadn 't been warned and said they thought the entire area should have been closed. fears of a possible public health threat prompted officials to issue a $100,000 arrest warrant. police are looking for 25- year-old eduardo rosas cruz. he was diagnosed with tb. he was supposed to stay in a hotel where a medical administrator would give him his medication and watch him take it. but he left the location. a coach has been arrested. police are not releasing

information about the victim. schricker was released on bail. police may have identified a sereal killer but we may never know for sure because he was killed in a shoot out with officers. glen griggs was killed during a stand off as police try to serve a warrant for his girlfriend murder. investigators discovered three of griggs previous girlfriends had all died. donaldson in 2009 and kelly daniel in 2006. >> any reasonable person is going to look at four connected you know missing persons or deaths as suspicious. and we do the same. >> reporter: authorities say they are still searching for frankemons body but are running out of leads. hundreds of union workers at two macy's in san francisco are raising the possibility of a strike. workers at the union square and

the macy's at stone town have voted for a strike. other issues include changes to the pension plan and sales quotas. the union says it hopes to return to the bargaining table but is preparing for a strike any way. san francisco's culinary community is mourning the loss tonight of a well respected chef. >> he was a mentor in the kitchens of some top restaurants but often not in the spotlight himself. new at 10:00, ktvu's jana katsuyama is live now at san francisco's prospect restaurant with the tribute now being planned. >> reporter: julie and frank, chris lomajue was the head coach here before leaving to battle cancer. he passed away yesterday but tonight he's being remembered in kitchens throughout the bay area. at 44 chris lomejue had achieved what many aspiring chefs dream of doing.

a gesture considered creepy by some parents has turned out to be something else entirely. porcelain dolls have been left on doorsteps and some of the dolls look like the girls who live in those homes. all of the girls are about 10 years old and go to the same school. the mothers and daughters say they found the life like dolls unsettling. >> you don't see or hear anything like that. only in the movies. >> it would freak me out.

it would scare my. >> i would be really scared i don't think i could sleep at night. >> reporter: in a tweet, the orange county police page says the person responsible for the dolls has been found and that person's intentions was good will. police want to locate the driver of a black 1997 buick century. they say the driver of this car dropped off three heavily armed robbers at a bank of the west branch. when the robbers took off they also took three women as hostages. one of whom died during a gun battle with police. she was a mother of two. and today her sister spoke publicly. >> i am making a plea to everyone of you stocktonians out there to step forward with any knowledge of any information that will bring these criminals down. let's take our city back. this is our city not theirs.

take it back. >> reporter: two of the robbers died in the shoot out. a third suspect who's only 19 years old was captured. he is facing a number of charges including three counts of murder. some motorcyclists are upset that the highway patrol has moved guidelines from its website about how to safely lane split in freeway traffic. lane splitting is the process of driving a motorcycle in lanes between slower moving vehicles. it is legal in california and some found the chp guidelines for an aid for motorcycle riders and other drivers. the chp says they took down the guidelines because they could be mistaken for laws. the los angeles lakers say jeremy lin will be wearing his old jersey number this season. the team tweeted out this picture today saying the bay area native and palo alto high school graduate will take the court wearing number 17. that's the same number he wore as a member of the new york knicks when lin-sanity first broke out. pictures of barry zito holding his new son are making their way throughout the

today. we got 10 to 15 degrees warmer than yesterday. the high inversion is in and that's pressing the warm air downward. if you get fog tomorrow morning which there will be very little. it'll burn off rapidly. these were the highs from today. they were warmer than yesterday. and highs tomorrow boy you can add almost you know some of these areas you can add 10 degrees to tomorrow. it's going to be warmer. noticeably warmer. it was noticeably warmer today. we haven't seen this pattern in a little while. where we've had this dry warm air. we've been having very moist air tropical air. the last week they've been in the 50 to 60 percentile range. there's no fog at the coast. the fog will try to come in late tonight and early tomorrow morning in a very patchy form.

there's a strong air flow. with that weaker on shore flow, stronger tomorrow. tomorrow will be the warmest day of the week and the warmest day in the five day forecast with temperatures 102, 103 in some spots. the fog is barely there. it's a sunny day along the beach front tomorrow. highs those are 100s the purples. look at the difference in this temperature footprint from 48 hours ago when i was showing you yellows painting throughout the entire bay area. yellows being 70s. tomorrow we're looking at 90s and 100s in spots tomorrow. tomorrow is a spare the air day. weekend still going to be very warm. as high pressure building up out of the east. going to start to set the winds off tomorrow. that's the hot day. then it weakens a little bit and allows more fog at the coast on saturday and sunday. slightly cooler. gilroy garlic festival starting tomorrow. it's going to be hot. we talked about that.
