san jose looking at cools. when i come back a detailed look around and an extended look at the weekend forecast. >> and we start with breaking news in san jose a chp officer hit a man walking on 101 early this morning. several lanes are shut down. katy is there to tell us what happened. >> reporter: the officer driving had just a few scary moments to react as the man ran onto 101. he hit the pedestrian all the way up the roadway behind me. you can see where that white box truck is. investigators -- that's where the pedestrian was struck as the officer swerved to miss him the car fish tamed and as we pulled back closer to where we are you can seat skid marks along the roadway and the officer finally got the car stopped here along the shoulder. the pedestrian struck the passenger side of the patrol car and rolled down the side. you can seat blue marks on the

car. that's from the jeans the man was wearing. amazingly as officers ran to help he was responsive and talking. currently he is listed in critical condition and under going surgery. the collision happened this morning when chp said the man in his early 20s ran onto 101. >> he was going directly -- close to the lanes. he wasn't visible until he was -- directly in front of the vehicle. with in the headlights. >> reporter: chp blocked 101 down to one lane until about 6:40. it cause quite the back up. there is no estimate yet for when the roadway will reopen. investigators are here on scene trying to recrocket what happened. i'm told the two officers in the patrol car are okay. just shaken up. the man is in critical condition under going surgery. we will check with officers to find the latest status on how he is doing.

they haven't positively identified him but i'm told he is a latino man in his early 20s. live in san jose. ktvu. >> and we are also following another breaking story from san jose where firefighters have been fighting a warehouse fire since 3:30. the fire broke out spear spartan stadium. it started as a three alarm fire and quickly grew to five. the san jose fire department said that it expects to be batting the flames for the next couple of hours and will stay on scene for most of the dame the cause of the fire is unknown. no injuries have been reported. >> this morning cal fires expected to update a wildfire burning in the sierra foothills east of sacramento. it's called the sand fire. it's burning along sand ridge road near plymouh. it's burned 1300 acres. it started late yesterday afternoon in southern el dorado but flames spread to a neighboring county. the fire has destroyed three

structures and is threatening 250 others. >> how frightened are you? >> let's put it on a scale of one to 100. i'm scared. >> >> are you at that 100? >> right now yes. >> investigators say they are looking at if a car fire sparked that wildfire. there was little wind the fire grew quickly because of dry brush caused by the drought and evacuation center has been set up at the el dorado county fairgrounds. >> here firefighters are keeping an eye on the wild lands in lafayette after a house went up in flames. that fire started around 6:30 near glenn road. the blaze grew quickly and firefighters had to call in for help. the fire threatened several homes. firefighters were able to get it under control. still some residents left their homes just as a precaution. >> i looked out and could see the smoke and then flames, higher than our house.

in san jose there are restrictions at alan rock park. no picnic fires or open flames are allowed. the park opens at eight this morning. all other park activities are still being allowed. >> security fears prompting the united states to shut down its embassy in libya. about 150 people including 80 american marines evacuated to tunsia. the government said it's concerned about escalating violence between. two american soldiers have been killed an an ied in afghanistan. it happened near the khandhar province. one is a 19-year-old keith williams a vigil will be held tonight in his honor. the other was from nebraska. the funeral for a woman killed during a bank robbery in stockton is set for monday. misty holt singh was the shot and killed on july 17th. police say she was used as a human shield by one of the bank robbers.

officers say they are still looking for the person who they say drove the three to the bank of the west on thornton road a 50,000-dollar reward is offered. a plea deal has been reached in the case of a woman knocked unconscious outside at&t ballpark. we obtained cell phone video showing the incident. the da said that two men from sacramento arrested in connection with the fight have agreed to a deal. 42-year-old anthony ruck er plead guilty to felony assault a 32-year-old fransics lopez plead no contest. the woman from oakland who was hit was in the hospital but has been released. >> construction crews in san francisco worked through the night painting new transit lines on market street. the transportation agency said it hopes that paint is going to

while it's still early authorities in the africa say they believe bad weather caused a jet to crash. soldiers helping in the

darting across the highway. katy is live alongside that road where several lanes of the freeway have been closed this morning and are still closed behind you. >> reporter: chp estimates to have the highway reopened around nine this morning. if i step out of the way you can see why they need to have so many lanes blocked off. down the road, past the on-ramp is where the pedestrian was struck. you can see that box truck and investigators still looking at the scene. the driver of the highway patrol vehicle swerved to try to miss the man who darted an to the road and fish tailed and couldn't get the car stopped until here. alongside the roadway you can see where it finally came to a stop on a shoulder. the pedestrian hit the passenger side of the patrol car and rolled down the side and you can see the blue marks on the door. i'm told that's from the jeans the man was wearing. amazingly as the officers ran to help him he was responsive and talking. currently he is listed in

are worried after a tow truck driver was shot while trying to repossess a vehicle. it happened just after nine yesterday morning on seventh and west oakland. it prompted a police standoff that ended when the suspect came out and gave up. the tow truck driver wasn't hurt. others say the job can be dangerous and people often threaten them. >> it worried me. especially since i'm out there doing the same thing. i have never been shot at but i think about it. >> some repo mean say their rule is to try to repossess with in one minute. >> the doors at college campuses closed after the school's parent company filed for bankrupty. news came yesterday. >> my instructors prepared me to go get a career and doesn't have a job anymore.

it's heart breaking. >> they operate four colleges including schools in san francisco, haywood and san jose. the graduates say they paid $16,000 for a education of less than one year to qualify for a career in the medical field. >> some of the students, some of them have like one month to finish. some of them like -- some weeks to go. there is nothing we can do. >> one staff member said that the school had been having trouble paying for the past year. financially troubled corinthianian colleges are warning about their plans to sell. they run five bay area schools. under a new agreement the company is required to send notices to a students in california about the planned sale. leeland lee is facing new

a passenger on a flight from canada to panama is due in court for threats he made while

the numbers. low 80s for oakland. mid-90s expected in concord. 99 for antioch. temperatures will continue to fall off. not so much into sunday but we have clouds coming our way. i will show you where they are coming from and when you can expect them to arrive coming up. >> we begin with breaking news in san jose. several lanes of highway 101 are still closed after a chp patrol car hit a man who ran onto the freeway early this morning. that man is now in the hospital under going surgery. we are live at the scene where she has been for the past couple of hours and has the update. >> reporter: at this point investigators still working to determine how fast the chp car was traveling when the pedestrian was struck. we step out of the way and show you. the officer hit the man in lane three along the freeway and it's up past the on-ramp where the pedestrian was hit. then if we pull out you can see how far that car skidded. the officer fish tailed as he

tried to avoid the pedestrian and the car came to a stop here along the shoulder. chp investigators sate man ran onto 101 north of alan rock road and the officer had ten to 15 feet to stop you can see the damage of the passenger side of the patrol car where the man hit. the two officers ran to help him after their vehicle stopped. i'm told he only spoke spanish but one of the officer its did as well. they were sable to talk totman but he didn't give any indications as to why he tried to run across the highway. >> hispanic male in his early 20s, not been positively identified yet. >> reporter: chp estimates that the road will reopen around nine. they say this is actually the second collision involving someone on the freeway this weekend a pedestrian walked onto 680 around 11 last night and was struck and killed. the man hit in this collision is listed in critical condition

this morning. i'm told that the two chp officer that were inside the vehicle, they are okay. they are shaken up over what happened last night. it appears behind me they are opening up part of the freeway. we will check with chp and find when the full opening will happen. at this point the chp patrol car still needs to be towed. live in san jose. >> we are also following developing news from san jose this morning where firefighters have been battling a warehouse fire since 3:30. that fire broke out at a warehouse near spartan stadium. that's at south seventh street and east alma avenue. it started agency a threa three alarm fire. firefighters say that it could take up to 24 hours before those flames are under control. the cause of that fire is still unknown. >> this morning cal fire is expected to give an undate on a wildfire burning in the search

gentleman foothill -- sierra foothills. it's burning along sand ridge road. so far that fire has burned 1300 acres and is 20% contained. it started late yesterday afternoon in southern el dorado but flames spread to neighboring amador. that fire destroyed three structures and is threatening 250 others. investigators say that they are looking in to the possibility a car fire spark the wildfire. though there was little wind that fire grew quickly because of the dry brush caused by the drought. >> here firefighters are keeping an eye on the wild lands in lafayette after a house went up in flames. that fire start add round 6:30 at a home -- near glenn road. the blaze grew quickly and firefighters did have to call in for extra help. the fire threatened several nearby homes. firefighters were able to get it under control. some left their homes just as a precaution. >> i looked out and could see the smoke and then flames, you know higher than our house. we are at the top of the hill.

? a nonprofit group has been given a big piece of funding but could loose it all. the group is in vallejo and is dedicated to getting animals fixed. now with more than $250,000 in fund on the line. the group is reaching out for help. the wags and whiskers threat shop sits on the corner of this street. and every day she pulls out the rack and fills the shelves with one goal in mind. make enough money to get animals in vallejo fixed. >> the problem is horrible. >> every two days i come and put cat food in here. >> reporter: man michelle knows how bad it is. >> i have personally trapped and fixed over 400 animals over the last five-years. i have rehomed at least 200.

>> reporter: many animals end up here at the humane society. or they get sent to the fairfield animal shelter. of the ten thousand they get every year, 20% come from vallejo. >> we are extremely overo crowded with the population today of 366 animals . >> reporter: normally they have about 160. walk the aisles, saturday rooms, and you will be hard pressed to find an empty space. not all will find homes. >> we have a live release rate now of 60%. that 40% of those animals don't make it out. >> many times they are pit bulls . >> reporter: the search has been frustrating. there are no low cost clinics in vallejo. the city has set aside 16 5,000 dollars to the group snip for procedures and petsmart charities has pledged to give them 9 5,000 dollars for

takes some of the kittens home herself. this is video of them. they are barely two weeks old. the director hopes to find them homes. there are 112 cats at that location alone with 15 litters of kittens still waiting to be fixed. we are hearing other bay area shelters are facing the same type of problem. >> a puppy has a second chance of life after being rescued from the inside of a hot car. the chp posted these pictures yesterday after an officer saved the dog. officers say that someone called and reported that he was locked inside a kennel with no water. it was 87 and much hotter inside the vehicle. officers say that the windows were barely cracked. shortly after he was rescued his owner came out and askance elmed by animal control. heat a big concern as the garlic festival continues in gilroy. it started yesterday with temperatures reaching a hundred degrees. organizers say they are taking steps to keep people safe.

in to the bay area. the model on that and the extended forecast coming up. >> developing news in san jose the chp is expected to reopen all lanes of highway 101 in just a few minutes. most of the southbound lanes have been closed this morning after a chp patrol car hit a man running across the freeway. it happened just before two this morning. the patrol car with two officers inside was heading south on 101 when officers say a man darted across the roadway. chp said an officer driving tried to swerve to avoid that man but hit him with the side of the patrol car. that man was transported to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition. >> going directly -- next to the lanes, wasn't visible until he was -- directly in front of the vehicle. about ten to 15 feet in front. >> chp said it's not clear what the man was doing on the freeway. he hasn't been identified. the two officers are said to be physically okay but still a bit

shaken. this was the second accident involving a person on a san jose freeway. just after 11 a person was struck and killed by a car on interstate 680 near the capitol expressway. the area was shut down and it took crews about two hours before reopening. the identity of the person hasn't been released. >> amid high fire damage mount tam is getting extra protection. larry is a volunteer look out who works 2600 feet in the area. he scans mount tam for smoke in the areas where there aren't people or cell phone coverage. he is one of 35 who provides summer coverage and nearby mount barnaby. he said he take itselfs it seriously. >> you have to like the quiet. you have to like the solitude. i like being on the mountain.

it'se easy for me. >> reporter: he is a retired carpenter and has spotted a fire once in the three summers he has done this. after many years biking and hiking on mount tam he said he feels helping protect is his way of giving back. also joining the firefighter effort the independent journal took the pictures of the animals hard at work. they were brought into graze on invasive grass and blackberry bushes. it's a natural and it's a cost effective way to clear out the areas that are occupied by the homeless. according to the journal there have been several fires linked to the homeless. >> the chp is welcoming eight new dogs to the highway patrol. they just finished an intensive 11 week training course. three have been assigned to serve in the bay area. their training included 440 hours of narcotics detection. even after graduating the dogs are expected to train with

their handlers. at least eight hours a week. the chp has more than 40 teams with six dog as signed to the bay area. the 8-year-old girl who was robbed by a woman selling candy in san francisco has been rewarded with a special treat. pal's sweet shot gave sapphire and her 9-year-old brother a thousand dollars worth of candy. there adopted mom said their birth mother taught them to steal to get what they want. selling candy has been a form of therapy to teach them how to earn their own spending money. sapphire said she was saving up for a cell phone. >> sometimes i always get lost. i have to use other phones, public phones. instead of using those. >> she and her brother were in 14 osterholmes before being adopted. they are adopting well. police have arrested the woman accused of stealing from them.

yesterday. san jose, today you'll be at 89. yesterday, 94. when i come back, i'll have a detailed look at the numbers for your neighborhood and the subtropical moisture working its way back in from the desert southwest. i'll show you when i expect it to arrive, coming up. new this morning, the chp reopened all southbound lanes of highway 101 near allen rock in san jose. that's where a man in the middle of the night ran across the freeway and was hit by an oncoming chp patrol car. ktvu's katie utehs was the first reporter on scene and has now moved down the road, as traffic is back to normal. katie? >> reporter: claudine, they opened up all lines of 101 about an hour ago. we've moved off the highway, but the man tried to cross near the onramp where i'm standing. the patrol car was traveling southbound on 101 and struck him in the third lane. the patrol car finally skidded to a stop near the overpass. you're looking towards the area in the distance. the pedestrian hit the passenger side of the patrol

car as the officer tried to swerve and fishtailed. the man rolled down the side of the car. you can see the blue marks on the door. i'm told that's from the blue jeans the man was wearing. the collision happened around 1:50 when chp says the man in his early twenties ran onto 101 north of rock road. he was responsive and talking, but didn't say why he darted onto the roadway. >> he was going directly, you know, perpendicular particular lahr to the lanes. he was not visible on the headlights until he was directly in front of the vehicle within the headlines, 10 to 15 feet in front of the patrol vehicle. >> reporter: last night as well, 680 and capital expressway, a man tried to walk in the wrong direction from the off ramp onto the interstate. he was struck and killed around 11:00. part of the roadway was closed for an hour or so. chp has not identified either men hit on the freeways, but they wanted me to underscore that it is illegal for anyone to try to cross on bay area

freeways, highways, or interstates. in one case, it turned out deadly. the man that was hit here is in critical condition. as we were moving off the highway, we saw chp talking to a man who was collecting garbage along the freeway. so it's certainly very dangerous out here. the two chp officers that were in the patrol car last night, i'm told they are okay, but shaken up about the whole incident. live in san jose, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2news. also new this morning, firefighters in san jose contained a mop-up of a warehouse fire that kicked up around 3:30 this morning. the fire broke out at a building near spartan stadium at south seventh street and east alma avenue. it started as a three-alarm fire and quickly grew to five. several buildings have been damaged. firefighters say one person had to be taken to the hospital with severe burn injuries. the fire is now contained. firefighters will remain on scene to control hot spots. the cause of the fire is still unknown. we have just received new information about a wildfire burning in the sierra foothills

east of sacramento. it's called the sand fire. it is burning along sand ridge road near plymouth. this morning, calfire announcedded that fire has destroyed five homes and seven outbuildings and is threatening 250 structures. the fire is still at 1300 acres and is 20% contained. the fire has burned 1300 acres and is again 20% contained. it started late yesterday afternoon in southern el dorado county, but flames spread to neighboring amador county. >> how frightened are you? >> oh, let's put it on a scale of 1 to 100. i'm scared. >> are you at that 100? >> right now, yes. >> investigators say they are looking into whether a car fire sparked that wildfire, although there was little wind, the fire grew quickly because of dry brush caused by the current drought. an evacuation center has been

set up at the el dorado county fairgrounds. here in the bay area, firefighters are keeping an eye around a house in lafayette after it went up in flames. the fire started around 6:30 last night near glenn road. the blaze grew quickly and firefighters did have to call in for extra help. the fire threatened several nearby homes, but firefighters were able to get it under control. still, some residents left their homes just as precaution. >> i looked out and could see the smoke and flames. so we grabbed the family and dog and out we went. >> heat and low humidity helped fuel the blaze, which did start in the garage. there were no injuries from the fire. the bay area is getting closer and closer to extreme fire danger. campers at mount diablo state park are no longer allowedded to have camp fires. they can only use gas stoves to cook. the park has shut down its bathroom and showers because of the drought. calfire says dry conditions

remind them of last september, when the morgan fire burned 3100 acres on mount diablo. >> i checked it not long ago. relative humidity was in the low double digits, getting into high, or extreme fire danger. >> campers we talked to say bringing their own water is a little hassle. as long as they enjoy the outdoors with their families, it's worth it. fire danger continues to be a concern across the bay area. in san jose, there are restrictions today at allen rock park. no picnic fires or open flames are allowed there. the park opened up about an hour ago at 8:00 this morning. security fears this morning, prompting a shutdown of the embassy in libya. 80 marines evacuated to tunisia. the u.s. government says it is concerned about escalating violence between rival libyan militia. embassy operations are

suspended until conditions improve. two were killed by an improvised explosive device in afghanistan in the canned dar province on thursday. one of the soldiers has been identified of 19-year-old keith williams of visalia. a candlelight vigil will be held in his honor. the other soldier was from nebraska. the funeral of a woman killed in a bank robbery and police chase is set for monday. misty holt-singh was shot and killed after being taken hostage by three men on july 17th. police say she was used as a human shield by one of the suspects. police are still looking for the person they say drove the three gunmen to the bank of the west on thornton road. a reward for information has now reached $50,000. holt-singh leaves behind a husband and four children. a plea deal has been reached in the case of a woman knocked unconscious outside at&t park. ktvu obtained this cell phone video that shows the incident. the san francisco da's office says two men from sacramento who were arrested in connection with that fight have agreed to

a deal with prosecuters. 42-year-old anthony rucker pled guilty to felony assault. he faces one year in jail and three years probation. 32-year-old francisco lopez pled no contest to misdemeanor assault. he has already been sentenced to three years probation. the 27-year-old oakland woman who was hit was hospitalized, but has since been released. an estimated 3000 people expected to head to the alameda county fairgrounds for the running of the bulls. runs are scheduled to start this morning and will continue throughout the day. organizers say they built spaces on the side of the tracks so runners can move out of the way of the bulls. rob dickens, founder of the event, says he got the idea for a local bull run because he could not get to spain to run with the bulls there. >> we don't get many opportunities in our civilized and sedentary life to experience true adrenaline, true fear, and to see how you would react in those situations. >> the animal legal defense

fund and peta filed a lawsuit on march 13th to stop the event. an online petition at change.org drew more than 1700 signatures, but the event will still go forward today. well, it's shaping up to be a busy weekend in san francisco. yesterday, the giants kicked off a three-game series against the los angeles dodgers. that heated rivalry always draws big crowds and passionate fans. all the games will be held at night. traffic is expected to be heavy around at&t park. tonight's game is set to start at 6:05. then tomorrow, the san francisco marathon. that course takes runners in a loop around the city and over the golden gate bridge. it begins and ends at mission and the embarcadero. just like last year, elite runners get the head start at 5:30 a.m. in total, 28,000 runners are expected to participate. people in san francisco should expect street closures until 3:00 p.m. construction crews in san francisco worked through the night painting new red transit lines on market street.

. a puppy has a second chance at life after being rescued from the inside of a hot car. the castro valley chp posted these pictures on twitter yesterday, after an officer saved young pugsly. someone called and reported that he was locked inside a kennel with no access to water. it was 87 degrees outside, but much hotter inside that vehicle. officers also say the windows were barely cracked. shortly after he was rescued,

his owner came out of a nearby building and was counseled by animal control officers. marine mammal experts say they are seeing an increase in animals hurt by trash. rescuers found this california sea lion last week. she had fishing net tangled around her head, which then cut into the tissue right around her ears. the marine mammal center has rescued 16 animals this year who have gotten entangled. last year, there were 15 rescues, 11 the year before. >> coming in contact with all this fishing gear and ocean trash and they are curious, trying to cash fish in the nets and they are getting entangled. >> rescuers say an increase in ocean trash has led to the higher number of rescues, but also say they are helping more animals thanks to a new capture technique that utilizes tranquilizer dart and tracking device. four young penguins will be graduating from fish school today at the san francisco zoo. the zoo will hold a harr of the penguins. you are looking at video right

>> not as hot as yesterday. so better weather coming our way. better air quality. no spare the air for you today. giving you a live look over the walnut creek area, temperatures rebounding quite fast this morning. many of us in the inland areas, at least already in the 70s. we'll have a look at those numbers in a moment. let's take a look at the satellite view. the fog is back and we have plenty of fog in areas along the san mateo coastline, even in areas near ocean beach, santa cruz socked in pretty good this morning. onshore breeze is back, very weak. fairfield reporting onshore breeze at 7 miles per hour. it will grow stronger over the course of the afternoon and that is what will help to bring us the cooldown for your afternoon. 77 at fairfield, but that's a tad cooler than where we were yesterday at this hour. livermore, 75. that's 2 degrees cooler than where we were yesterday at this time. some areas like napa and santa rosa, cooler as well. 69 mountain view. 70 right now in heyward.

i love to show this graphic because it does help you sort of wrap your mind around this cooldown. today, 97 in livermore, that's not cool, but it's definitely better than yesterday when we hit 102. napa, you will be notably cooler for today. san francisco, dropping 11 degrees for the afternoon. san jose, you'll see temperatures come down as well. 89 in the forecast for you. as we get into the second half of the day, we have an increase in high clouds coming our way. i'll explain where those are coming from and take a look at some additional cooling expected for your sunday, coming up. . new this morning, a man is in critical condition after getting hit by a chp patrol car on 101 in san jose. as we have shown you throughout mornings on 2, several southbound lanes were closed overnight, but all lanes reopened within the past hour. katie utehs is live in san jose, where there were two crashes involving pedestrians on the freeway. katie? >> reporter: mike, first, the one involving chp, the driver of the patrol car had 10, maybe 15 feet to react before he

struck this pedestrian. i'll step out of the way and show you where it all happened. the person tried to dart across the road onto lane 3 near the end of this onramp. the officer swerved and fishtailed, finally coming to a stop near the overpass where you're looking in the distance, but not before hitting the man. that man is in critical condition at a local hospital, as we mentioned. shoes and evidence were scattered across the roadway. chp investigators say the man darted onto 101 north of alum rock road around 1:50 this morning. after the collision, the two officers in the car ran the 1000 or so feet to help the pedestrian. the man only spoke spanish. one of the officers in the vehicle did as well. they were able to communicate, but he did not give any indication as to why he tried to run across the highway. >> hispanic male in his early twenties, not positively identified yet. >> reporter: they don't know a lot about him at this point. last night as well, at 680 and capital expressway, another man tried to walk in the wrong

direction from the off ramp onto the interstate. he was struck and killed around 11:00. part of the roadway was closed for an hour. chp has not released the identity of either pedestrian, but they wanted us to underscore how dangerous and illegal it is for pedestrians to try to cross area highways, interstates, or freeways. in this case, we have one fatality and one critical injury overnight. i'm told the two officers involved are okay. they are shaken up. they are investigating alcohol as a possible contributing factor for the pedestrian in this crash. but still, very early in their investigation. they have, however, cleared the roadway. live in san jose, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2news. well, amid high fire danger, marin's mount tam is getting extra protection. larry levy is a volunteer lookout who works 2600 feet in the air, scanning mount tam.

he is one of 35 lookouts who provides summer coverage on mount tam and nearby mount barnaby. levy says he takes the job seriously, but also provides the perks it provides. >> you have to like the quiet and you have to like the solitude. i like being on the mountain. it's very easy for me. >> levy, a retired carpenter, has spotted a fire once in the three summers he's been doing this. after many years, biking and hiking on mount tam, he says he feels helping protect it is his way of giving back. and goats are also joining the fire fighting effort in the north bay. the marin independent journal took these photos of the animals who were brought in to graze on invasive grass and blackberry bushes near the san rafael canal. the fire department says it's a natural and cost effective way to clear out the areas, which are occupied by the homeless. according to the journal, there have been four fires linked to homeless encampments in just the past month. chp is welcoming eight new

k-9s to the california highway patrol. the dogs just finished an extensive 11-week training course. three have been assigned to serve right here in the bay area. their training included 440 hours of criminal apprehension and narcotics detection. even after graduating, dogs are expected to train with their handlers at least eight hours per week. the chp has more than 40 k-9 teams with six dogs assigned to the bay area. the 8-year-old girl who was robbed by a woman while selling candy in san francisco has been rewarded with a special treat. powell's sweet shop gave sapphire, and her 9-year-old brother jayden more than $1000 worth of candy. their adopted mom says their biological mother taught them to steal to get what they want. she says selling candy has been a form of therapy to teach them how to earn their own spending money. sapphire says she was saving up for a cell phone. >> sometimes i always get lost. i have to use other phones,

public phones. >> sapphire and her brother were in 14 foster homes before they were adopted. their new mom says they are adapting well. police have arrested the woman accused of stealing from sapphire. a $5000 reward is being offered for information related to a shooting that injured a teenager at a park in oakland. it happened thursday night just after 7:00 at brooke dale park, which is off high street. police say someone in a car exchanged as many as 20 shots with another group in the park. a 17-year-old playing basketball was wounded. police say he was not the intended target. >> my grandkids that bicycle up and down the street or scooter, or even play across the street in a park on their scooters, is very scary. >> the shooting came less than a week after a 10-year-old girl was hit by a stray bullet while attending a birthday party at lowell park in west oakland. some people who repossess vehicles in the east bay say

they are concerned after a tow truck driver in oakland was shot at while trying to repossess a car. it happened just after 9:00 yesterday morning on 7th street in west oakland. the shooting prompted a police stand-off that ended a few hours later when the suspect came out and surrendered. the tow truck driver was not hurt and other drivers say the job can be very dangerous and that people often threaten them when they try to repossess a vehicle. >> it worried me, especially since i'm out there doing the same thing. i've never gotten shot at, but it always crosses my mind. >> some repo men say their rule of thumb is to try and repossess a vehicle within one minute. oakland international airport employees will get a discount to ride the new bart line to the airport. employees will pay $2 while the fare for travelers will be $6. according to the contra costa times, airport employees will be able to apply for a smart card discount. bart is getting a $17 million grant to protect the transbay tube against a

potential terrorist attack. east bay congressman eric swailwell announced the grant, saying it's a smart investment that will enable bart to enhance security of its critical infrastructure against potential terrorist attack. he says the failure to do so could cripple the bay area's economy and bart officials say they are excited about receiving the money. >> the money's going to be used for critical infrastructure needs for the transbay tube, to make sure it's safe and secure. >> bart riders say any work to reinforce security is a welcome sight. >> given all the things that have been happening around the world, i think every security measure is important. >> bart spokeswoman says now the funding is secure, the project is going to go out for bid very soon, but she won't say when the work will begin, citing security reasons. suspended state senator leland yee is facing new charges in his federal corruption case. the new charges include racketeering, which carries a potential 20-year prison sentence. the charges were filed yesterday against yee, former gang leader raymond shrimp boy

chow, and 27 other people. he is also accused of selling his votes on various bills. in one case, he allegedly agreed to take $60,000 from a person posing as an nfl team owner in exchange for his vote on a bill that dealt with athlete compensation. well, looks like apple could be involved in another patent battle. the post corporation filed the complaint yesterday, accusing beats electronics of infringing on five of its patents. apple is in the process of acquiring beats electronics. the patents at the center of the lawsuit involve noise- canceling properties in some of the headphones. bose says it's been working on noise-canceling wireless headphones for the last 40 years. so far, apple has not commented. the doors at brieman college campuses are now closed. >> my instructors prepared me to get a career and they don't have a job anymore. it's heartbreaking. >> she was talking about brieman's parent company

supplies. the cease-fire went into effect after secretary of state john kerry's efforts failed to produce a longer truce to end the nearly three weeks of fighting. today, kerry will be in paris to try and broker a more permanent cease-fire agreement. more than 1000 palestinians and 40 israelis have been killed. later today here in the bay area, there will be a rally to demand an end to the violence in gaza. the rally will start at 1:00 this afternoon at justin herman plaza in san francisco. there will then be a march down market street. today at the sap center in santa rosa, a mixed martial arts fighter will give up his career for his country. the 30-year-old will compete in a three-round feather weight bout against stephen sidler. right after the match, win or lose, he says he will head to israel and join the military. he was born in israel, but has been training in the south bay. fox sports and ktvu will have the ufc fight night 12 starting at 3:00 this afternoon. a bill that makes it legal

to unlock cell phones when switching providers is headed to president obama's desk. the house of representatives voted to approve the bill yesterday and the senate approved it earlier this month. president obama has said he will sign it. right now, people often have to buy a new phone if they want to switch to a different carrier, but unlocking a cell phone means it won't be linked to a specific provider. samsung is investigating one of its cell phones after it caught fire underneath a pillow of a 13-year-old girl. now, the girl's family contacted the fox 4 news station in dallas/fort worth shortly after the fire. they say their daughter was sleeping when she smelled smoke and discovered that the phone had melted into her pillow. her dad suspects the phone overheated, which caused the battery to swell and catch fire. samsung says its products on safe. the company says the battery that was in the phone was a replacement and not the original. >> glad she's safe, but never thought about sleeping with my phone. i don't think i will, if it

are being shot for the movie "san andreas." this is video from tuesday when a production crew took over parts of san francisco's russian hill neighborhood. the movie stars duane the rock johnson. it's about a helicopter pilot finding to find his daughter after a massive earthquake. "san andreas" is expected to hit theaters next summer. they will move downtown on sunday to california street and the area near grant avenue and bush street. johnson is expected to return to san francisco for this weekend's shooting. and starting monday, scenes for the new terminator movie will be filmed in redwood shores. this is going to be the fifth installment of the terminator series and will be called "terminator genesis." scenes will be shot inside the oracle headquarters and it's still not clear if arnold schwarzenegger is going to be there. filming in redwood shores is scheduled for monday through wednesday. well, it's ticket saturday. today, one lucky viewer will win a four-pack of tickets to the santa clara county fair. this year, the fair runs from july 31st to august 3rd.
