complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. a war from above and on the ground to fight this growing fire in the sierra foothills. one neighbor lost everything. another neighbor's house still standing. perfect the air you can see the blackened path of the sand fire, burning through the sierra foothills. good evening i'm ken wayne. >> i'm ali rasmus and heather holmes is off tonight that wildfire is burning out of control and calfire says the sand fire burned 4,000 acres east of highway 49 near the town of plymouth in amador county. 700 homes in the area are being

told to leave of the today you could see dry trees and brush bursting into flames in a matter of seconds. calfire says the fire is moving east, away from the area's vineyards. tonight that fire is 20% contained of five homes and seven other buildings have been destroyed. . and today crews helped the owners of a local retreat center badly damaged by the fire/rescue their 200-pound tortoise. they had to leave the tortoise named abe as the flames raced through rancho cicada. about 40 guests and employees were able to escape safely. >> mark taco is following the heat in the bay area and the heat these firefighters are going to be working through. >> we start with ktvu's debora villalon, who has the story of bay area firefighters who are helping out on the firelines and deb, you are at the morgan hill calfire command center. >> reporter: that is right, ken. two strike teams rolled out of

the bay area, heading east of the that puts eight engines where they are desperately needed now and into the days ahead. more than 1400 firefighters are now on the sand fire. and up against the same forces we have seen all summer. fuel like kindling, steep terrain hot, dry weather. >> this is a really critical day for us to hold the fire. >> reporter: instead the fire expanded, threatening more homes beyond the five already destroyed. and a few hundred new households were evacuated in el dorado county. >> there is also a large fire that started in yosemite. >> reporter: calfire's map shows where aircrafts are is deployed. water and retardant drops were on a no-divert order for several howard, locked on because lives were in danger. >> they were evacuating a lot of subdivisions today. >> reporter:

clearing people out, pulls crews away from the actual firefight. >> it takes a tremendous amount of resources to evacuate residences and that is their focus is life safety. >> 570 hazardous conditions for power lines down. >> reporter: units completed depleted by eight engineers and homes were treatened in the al medin valley. and clearing brush from forested homes makes the difference. >> night and day. you can see the house on fire with the tree canopy around it and the other on hilltop with defensible space. i don't think it's specific to the amdoor eldorado area, but what we'll see across northern california until we get significant rain. >> reporter: the chief says the only thing going for them so far is the

winds haven't been awful, but the sand fire really took off in the heat of the afternoon today and he expects that bay area fire departments will be called on to send crews as early as tomorrow. now the fire started by a car driving in dry vegetation. reporting live tonight in morgan hill, debora villalon ktvu channel 2 news. another wildfire that started just this afternoon is forcing evacuations near yosemite national park, a spokesperson says the el portal fire started around 4:00 p.m. it has burned 700 i caner's year the junction of highway 140 and 0. the small communities of foresta and el portal are evacuated and highway 120 is closed in the area, the main route through the park to tuolumne meadows. a. hot dry temperatures are driving the fires and ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo is here with a look at what those firefighters are dealing with. >> that is a constant threat with the temperatures soaring

not only in the babe, but a good portion of northern california. look at the current conditions around the two fire zones towards the sand fire, towards the plymouth area, close to yosemite temperatures in the mid-70s and the heat is on track to reach triple-digit territory into sunday with the peak of afternoon heat for tomorrow. parts of area cooled off a bit. san francisco 13 degrees cooler with that high of 72 degrees, but walnut creek actually warmed up just slightly 1 degree warmer than yesterday. a look at triple-digits towards vacaville, walnut creek, brentwood and san ramon and lafayette. as far as the temperatures from this afternoon across the rest of the bay area, most areas cooled off a little bit. san josi in in the upper 80s,livermore 101 degrees, but vallejo into the upper 80s at 87. i'm tracking clouds to the

south that impact the bay area castro and more on that changing weather pattern coming up in about 30 minutes. >> more details on fire protection in the bayer. last night we told you about the fire spotters on the top of mount tamalpais. there is a rotating crews of volunteer staff on mount tam and another crew on nearby mount barnaby. you can get the latest conditions anytime at ktvu.com. in other news, a brutal attack in vallejo claimed the life of a mother. her 5-year-old son was also attacked and is now in hospital. ktvu's john sasaki with the latest on the investigation and key piece of evidence still missing. >> reporter: 12 hours after reported homicide at had home on marin street in vallejo and investigators were still actively searching for evidence. >> i feel sad especially for the kids. because the kids they don't have to be involved in this. >> reporter: police rushed to scene after

receiving a shocking 911 call. >> from what appears to be an 8-year-old, who was at the crime scene, reporting that someone just came in and attacked his family. >> reporter: there were two victims. the female victims died of her injuries and the male victim her 5-year-old son was rushed to oakland children hospital's in serious condition. sources tell me that the boy who is recovering at the hospital had been slashed in the throat. >> it's just heartbreaking to see this kind of stuff go on right here. >> reporter: the home is right across the street from st. john missionary baptist church are members are devastated by what happened. >> we're going to be in prayer tomorrow for the city and for this family for that house. >> reporter: there were other people at the scene and they were able to tell police who the alleged attacker was. within hour police arrested 43- year-old wakefield who is well-known to vallejo police. >> mr. wakefield has a very

violent history. >> reporter: police tell me that they are still searching for the murder weapon and the reason why the family was attacked. in vallejo, john sasaki, kutv charles. >> new details op brake oyster company that will be staying open for at least another month. the oyster farm was supposed to shut down at'd at the end of july. the u.s. department of interior decided not to renew the farl's lease, so the farm could be restored to its natural states a wilderness area. now the national park service says it will delay the closing while the court fight continues. the owner of drake's bay says the company will close its retail operation next week, but will supply restaurants with raw oysters. >> one person is hospitalized of a five alarm fire broke out. firefighters were called to the building in east alma avenue this morning. you can see huge flames that were pouring out of the warehouse. it took more than 12 hours for firefighters to declare the fire under control.

it's not clear what the injured person was doing inside the warehouse and the cause of the fire is under investigation. a california highway patrol helicopter crew rescued two teens from a cliff in marin county in the goodyear recreation area yesterday evening. chp says the male teens climbed the cliff and were trapped. both were wearing only beachwear and no shoes. because the cliff was so steep, they used a helicopter to hoist them back opponent beach safely 'a new obstacle as dutch authorities tried to secure the malaysian plane crash site in eastern ukraine. the ukrainian government now says it must vote on whether to allow foreign police officers on ukrainian territory. that vote is set for thursday. the dutch hope their police force can secure the site to allow forensic investigators to collect evidence to identify what weapon was used to shoot down the plane. the families of some of the

killed by rockets firedded into israel, but it's the violence against palestinians had a galvanized protesters including a big protest in the bay area area. patti lee joins us live from san francisco where hundreds marched to try to end the violence. >> reporter: this is the fifth major rally since fighting in gaza started 19 days ago and with more than a thousand casualties most of them palestinian civilians, emotions are running high. san francisco police stepped in to separate this emotionally- charged group of protesters from israeli sympathizers. this started as we interviewed a young man who blamed israel for the civilian casualties in gaza. >> what we are doing is wrong. they kill babies -- they burn kids alive -- can you wait until i'm done. >> reporter: an interruption by a family with pro-israeli points of view incensed members of this crowd

given the volatility of the situation in gaza, many expect to be back soon. live in san francisco, patti lee ktvu channel 2 news. first fighting prompted the u.s. to evacuate its embassy in libya. they were evacuated to tunisia. security in tipolei has deteriorated following two weeks of fighting. the state department says the embassy will remain close until the security situationproofs. there is word of now, firing a short-range missile into the waters its eastern coast today ahead of the 61st anniversary of the signing of the agreement that ended the korean war. according to a south korean defense official the missile was fired from north korea's hwangae province of the number

of weapons tests is much higher than in previous years. military exercises by south korean and u.s. troops are scheduled to take place next month. a california family is mourning the loss of a 19-year- old soldier from visalia killed by a blom blast in afghanistan. arly private first class keith williams' sister remembered her brother as a natural-born comedian who loved to make people laugh. she says he joined the military to make sure you could do everything that he could to protect the ones that he loved. williams' father struggled with grief as he remembered from his son. >> when he graduated from basic training from fort benning we flew back to witness his graduation and pin his blue infantry badge on his uniform and he was happy. he was proud to be an infantry guy. >> it was thursday that williams died. the truck he was riding in near the border of pakistan was

the bay area did this for fun today. at least two people are recovering from scrapes and bruise after today's bull run at the alameda county fairgrounds. >> as far as we know the bulls are okay . number event was the first of its kind in california, but as cristina rendon tells us the event didn't come without controversy. >> it wasn't pamplona. it was pleasanton where people paid $60 to run with the bulls. vern chatfield says actually seeking thrill-seeking runs in his family. >> my son surfed the north shore with the big waving and another son bungee jumped and so i had to do something. >> reporter: he garnered hugs and high-fives for running twice, walking away

with a bandaged wrist. this is what it looked like on the track. >> a lot of mayhem, everybody is acting like they are brave and scooting off to the side and laughing and crying and screaming. >> reporter: one man was nailed in the back bit bull. >> he was trying to run in front of the bulls and he was nailed in the center of the back and fell straight for the ground and knocked out cold and a few bulls jumped ovhim and someone grabbed him. >> reporter: a second person was injured. both are expected to be okay. >> i will come and watch my friends do it and root them on, but you won't be in it. >> reporter: animal rights activists protested the event, saying that the bull run forces animals into a highly stressful and dangerous situation, but the organizers say that participants are told not to injure the bulls. >> the bulls can hit the people, that is what they signed up for, but we don't want them to hit the bulls. >> reporter: the event raised $150,000 and not to mention the revenue from

yvonne cagle of novato took part in today's ceremony and said that watching the moon landing fueled her own desire for a career in space. the san francisco marathon kicks off tomorrow morning and streets across the city will be closed for that event. the course takes runners around the city and across the golden gate bridge. some of the closures will begin at midnight tonight, so people driving along the route should expect traffic delays tomorrow into the afternoon tomorrow. just like last year the elite runners start first at 5:30 a.m. a total of 26,000 runners have signed up for the race. a deadly accident slowses down traffic in the south bay. coming up next, we'll show you how this highway patrol car was involved. and it's the deadliest year for flying in five years. why experts say those statistics though don't tell the whole story.

. cars struck two pedestrians on south bay freeways overnight. the accidents occurred hours apart from each other and one of the crashes involved this highway patrol officer. this vehicle. tonight one of those pedestrians is recovering after receiving serious injuries. ktvu's katie utehs explains what happened. >> reporter: shoes and evidence scattered across highway 101 this in san josi. >> they are shaken up. around 2:00 a.m. a california highway patrol officer driving southbound with a partner hit a man who investigator say ran onto the roadway north of the avenue. >> he was not visibility in the headlights until he was directly in front of the vehicle. >> reporter: this sec of highway 10 is six

channel 2 news. a harrowing day for a bay area pilot who managed to walk away after his plane burst into flames. that explosion happened after the plane hit a pick-up truck during an emergency landing on a nevada highway. a pilot and three other people in the crash survived. the nevada highway patrol says two people in the plane and two people in the truck suffered only minor injuries. the faa says the pilot was forced to make that emergency landing in his experimental thunder mustang after the plane lost power. the crash happened shortly after the plane left reno airport en route to south dakota. the pilot was identified of fredrick roscher of cupertino. and 2014 has been the deadliest year for flying. 761 people have died on airlines nearly trim the number who died last year. experts say despite recent incidents flying is safe. they say the tragedies have been the malaysia airline shout

security has directed an urgent increase in federal funding for law enforcement agencies along the southwest border. texas alone will receive an extra $5 million immediately, that is an increase of 1/5th of its normal fiscal year budget. the southwest border will get almost all of the budget from a special federal grant program designed to secure the u.s.' border. it comes as president obama met with the leaders of guatemala, honduras and el salvador, the three countries where most of the these children are coming from and discussed ways to prevent this tide of immigrants making the dangerous journey from central america into the united states. big debate was whether they should get refugee status? this is what the president had to say on had a. >> there may be some narrow circumstances in which there is a humanitarian or refugee status that a family might be eligible for. if that were the case, it would be better for them to be able to apply in country. >>that is what the white house

still going to hold onto the hot temperatures inland, mid to upper 90s, more changes developing to the south. high clouds approaching the bay area. right now it's not completely clear. we had the clouds and fog, and big batch approaching the area. lightning strikes should remain to the west, but something that bears watching over the next few hours. definitely lots of clouds out there. tomorrow when you wake up, partly to mostly cloudy skies in addition, to the low clouds and folks, we'll have the higher clouds sweeping into the region as well. current numbers for the 10:00 hour, livermore mid-70s, andoch checking in 80 freezing. san josi right now 70 and san francisco and half moon bay and pacifica mainly in the upper 50s, 57-58 degrees. so we still have the coastal fog, a pretty good onshore breeze. here is our live camera towards the bay bridge and tonight fair

will be the case once again tomorrow. >> thank you, mark. it appears that the legalization of marijuana in colorado may have unintended consequences. homeless advocates say they are seeing an influx of people who say they are coming to the city because of the marijuana laws. one salvation army shelter told the denver post it usually houses of a average of 220 and this year it's 300. if you tend to work odd hours you may be at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a new study published by chinese researcher. they pound that people who work outside of normal office hours have a 9% increased risk for diabetes. for those who rotate between day and nightshifts the risk is even higher, 4%. researchers
