a relentless fight from the air over yosemite as crews battle one of two growing fires in northern california. good evening i'm allie rasmuss in for healther holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. the fire has caused campgrounds and the small community of el portal to be evacuated. there's no access to the elk road or highway 120. yosemite is almost a second home to people here in the bay area. today we found the problems the fire caused for people trying to get in or out of the park.

signs like this one greeted people after a fire broke out. >> we were surprised last night that it got smokier and smokier. >> reporter: it's a sight she says she's never seen before. >> just concerning it's such a dry year. it's only july. that's what's nervewracking. it did prevent david from visiting the campground. we're told the road closures will be in effect well into tomorrow. for those who need a place to stay the red cross has set up two evacuation centers in the grove land community center. more details, these are still imagines from the park's

web cams. here's a picture of smoke rising today. here's what it looks like from the web cam in el capitan. there's a big plume of smoke. firefighters are making progress on a fire burning near plymouth in amador county. the fire is 50% contained. fire fighters are still worried the conditions caused from the drought have left much of the state vulnerable to the wildfires. >> this is going to be happening all over. i don't think it's specific to the amador area. this is what we're going to see across northern california until we get significant rain. firefighters say a combination of dry, hot weather and steep terrain is making it difficult to fight the flames. the fire tripled in size yesterday forcing hundreds of people to evacuate the area. >> grab your family that's the most important thing. that's what i told my wife i

have a 2-year-old and 3-year- old. my whole thought is my family's first. >> the so called sand fire has charred 210 acres and destroyed 10 homes and seven other buildings. developing news out of southern california tonight after one man was killed and at least eight others injured when they were hit by lightning during a rare thunderstorms near famed venice beach. the storm hit around 2:50 this afternoon. according to a los angeles fire department the lightning hit the water in at least 13 people all of whom were either in or near the water sought help at the scene. of those eight adults and 15 others were taken to the hospital. a coroner said eight people were taken to the hospital. one witness described an explosion from a rooftop. we'll have more on this story with a live update from los

angeles county coming up at 10:30. lightning of course is rare at the beaches of southern california. >> rare here as well. but we as mark has mentioned we've had this unusual kind of muggy weather pattern come and go and it sounds like it's on its way back. >> we call this the monsoonal pattern. it's been off and on. things developing as far as the activity in southern california earlier this week. take a look at the tweet from the national weather service los angeles. this was issued at 12:50 and this first tweet showing you the cluster of thunderstorms surrounding catalina island. that was the first development from southern california. this was the radar perspective from live storm tracker 2. let me bring you back. you can see the development of the storm. here we are with a few showers. throughout the afternoon hours, throughout the 1:00 hour, throughout the 2:00 hour, more development. in fact, here's a look at the reports as you can pick out.

the lightning reports with the thunderstorms. here is another look with the catalina island. there's the line extending to the southwest shore. things are fairly quiet in southern california just a few high clouds and few scattered showers but the active weather, the severe weather has diminished. we'll break down the timing coming up in just a few minutes. a state senator is calling for a criminal investigation into construction problems on the bay bridge. according to the sacramento bee, matt desanye says a report shows a criminal investigation is warranted. he says the report shows how the state department of transportation knowingly accepted substandard work at taxpayers expense. the council will discuss the report at a hearing on august 5th. an electrical fire destroyed a store in san leandro and sent a firefighter

to the hospital. firefighters battled strong flames as the fire spread through two stores. we're told one firefighter received nonlife threatening injuries. alameda fire says the hair salon where the fire started had extensive damage. a nail salon was also damaged by the fire. other stores in the plaza will be open for normal hours tomorrow. a woman suffered burns to 40% of her body and man had burns on his arms. firefighters say a neighbor helped to save lives by knocking on people's doors to warn them about the fire. the fire destroyed three of the units, at least one of the families is being helped by the red cross. the cause of this fire is under investigation. east palo alto police are investigating a triple shooting that left one man dead and two women injured. it happened near cesar chavez elementary school around midnight. the 31-year-old man died at the scene. the two women a 27-year-old and 24-year-old were taken to the

hospital in stable condition. police have not made any arrests. and investigators are now asking the public's help so they can gather more information on this case. a start display of fire power in libya as britain followed the u.s. in pulling its diplomats out of the country and away from the fighting. >> at least 97 people have been killed in a week of fighting near the airport in tripoli. rival malitias has been responsible for the violence after the ousting of gadhafi. the u.s. evacuated its embassy in tripoli over security concerns. the council called for an immediate and unconditional humanitarian seize fire. the call for a seize fire follows new attacks launched by israel and hamas despite talks from both sides of a truce.

>> reporter: violence continued in gaza on sunday amidst talk of a temporary truce. smoke could be seen in the sky as explosions echoed through the air. an israeli air strike killed a palestinian woman and critically injuring his son. >> they struck her house and we were surprised by their targeting. they are peaceful people. they're not related to anything. nothing at all. peaceful, innocent. >> reporter: as desperation grows, a group attacked a building. >> they waited for someone to help them retrieve their dead children from under the rubble and remove the dead from under the rubble who were there for four or five days and the ambulances wouldn't come. >> reporter: benjamin netanyahu said his country will do whatever is necessary to achieve its goal of a sustained quiet. >> it's happening because hamas is firing 25,000 rockets on our

peace. rescue crewing jumped into action this evening after a sailboat capsized in the bay. two people were on board when it happened in the waters near china camp. our tom vacar witnessed the rescues and spoke to one of the people who fell in but cara liu is live with our story. >> reporter: we tried but haven't been able to get more details about what happened from the san ramon police department but we did hear from two people who were there. reporter tom vacar happened to be at the state park and told us he took this photo and video after calling the coast guard for help. he says he first saw the boat capsize then he saw two people in the water trying to swim from it from roughly 250 feet out. the san rafael police boat responded pulling two people out of the water to safety then towed their boat in. joe sharado says they were struggling with the wind. >>ly daughter and i capsized a bunch of time. every time we tipped it back up

we kept drifting further and further out into san pablo bay. finally we tipped it over and the wind blew the mast. the mast got into the mud and we couldn't pick it back up. >> reporter: wind gusts this afternoon were estimated at 15 to 25 miles per hour. the father did mention his daughter was a strong swimmer. both were wearing wet suits. the search resumed today in texas for a missing uc berkeley sophomore believed to have drowned. soak was last seen when he jumped into a lake in austin. witnesses reported seeing a swimmer in trouble. local divers gave up the search last week but his family hired a crew from florida state university to conduct a search using sonar equipment. the 20-year-old computer science mayor was interning with a tech company in the dallas area. it's not unusual to fly from california to nevada.

survive. >> reporter: the other american infected nancy rifel worked with the doctor. she's in stable but serious condition. a gift of sorts for drivers with gas prices dropping to the lowest levels since march. the average price of a gallon of unleaded gas dropped to $3.57. that's 9.5 centss lower -- cents lower than a year ago. we called around and found gas as low as $3.79 at some stations in the city. you can say it's an adorable coincidence. two baby boys were born this weekend on different parts of highway 101 in the bay area. both fathers had to deliver their sons while on the way to the hospital. ktvu's cristina rendon spoke to one of the fathers who says he pulled over just in time. >> reporter: nestled in his mother's arms. >> it's the best feeling ever

in the world. >> reporter: baby david esajeria is safely resting after a whirlwind entrance into this world. >> i don't think that a lot of fathers can say they delivered their baby. >> reporter: their son was anxious to see them. >> i just parked the car, dodged traffic and started getting honk at. >> reporter: he parked his car in the median and did what he had to do. >> she pushed and he popped right out and landed right in my hands in the middle of the freeway. inside the car. >> as soon as i seen him in my husbands arms and he put him in my arms and he kept crying the whole time. it was, that is all that i wanted to hear was him crying. >> reporter: the family drove to kaiser in san francisco to make sure their nine pound 9- ounce bundle of joy was okay.

one of the most unusual competitions in all of aviation is celebrating its 50th celebration right here in california. it's called the hayward air rally. cessnas, pipers and beach craft, they're the most common names in general aviation and they all gathered at the hayward airport if one of the world's most challenging races. >> it's a combination of knowing how to use the technology very precisely and simultaneously fly the airplane very precisely. >> reporter: 50 years ago the then mayor of hayward who was also a pilot made a flying bet with another pilot. he wanted to see who could get to las vegas not necessarily the fastest but closest to the time and fuel calculations of their flight plans. >> to plan something out so precisely and follow that plan so closely that i can end a day of flying with a couple of

seconds. usually no more than 10 seconds of total time error and a couple of .1 of a gallon off of the fuel that i predicted the night before. >> you have to know the airplane. you have to take factors like the weather and wind into account. it's harder than it sounds. >> reporter: 26 aircrafts are flying from hayward to the largest air show in the country with -t spots in nevada, wyoming, south dakota and minnesota. pilots must reach checkpoints along the way. >> you have to fly over each checkpoint. they ask you a question over the checkpoint that only people who are flying over it would be able to answer. so there's no cheating. >> reporter: there are two divisions, analog and digital. don't think that the pilots with gps have a benefit over old school pilots using paper maps. >> i'm about to fly 1,500 miles across country without the benefit of gps or digital extras. >> reporter: and you're not going to get lost. >> i'm not going to get lost.

>> reporter: pilots also raise money to send teenage pilots to an academy. the results of the hayward air rally will be posted on the group's website. we have a link to it at ktvu.com under web links. a father walking his young daughter on a florida beach today was killed when a small plane made an emergency landing. sarasota county sheriff says the 9-year-old was seriously injured and is in critical condition tonight. investigators say it's not clear if the two were hit by the plane or by flying debris. an adult woman who may have been with the father and daughter was treated for cardiac arrest. the pilot reported having trouble with the plane. the pilot and passenger of that plane were not hurt. one of the largest maritime

salvage operations in history has come to an end. the contra concordia has been towed to shore. 32 passengers and crew members were killed when that ship went down. coming up on the 10:00 news, the latest on the deadly lightning strikes in southern california. the freak occurrence at venice beach has shaken up the busy tourist area. we'll have a live report from marina del rey. and a dog strolling through a neighborhood was shot by a resident. why police say the man who shot that dog won't face charges.

as we mentioned earlier one man was killed and at least eight other people injured after lightning struck at

venice beach. reporter christine o donald is live where some of the injured were taken to the hospital. christine, we understand most of the victims were in or near the water when the lightning hit. >> reporter: that's right ken. and family are here tonight at the hospital grieving after a 20-year-old man passed away after what appears to have a sudden lightning strike. 13 people were treated in total. eight people hospitalized and another man we're told is still in grave condition. it was a gut wrenching scene on venice beach as a man in a wet suit was pulled from the water and a brief search by helicopter, another man a 20- year-old was also pulled from the water. authorities tell us he was pronounced dead shortly after. the strike hit around 2:30 in the afternoon. authorities say about a dozen people were treated for injuries related to the strike. eight people hospitalized, seven adults and a teenager. one of the men who was treated told us what it felt like.

he said that there was a tingling beforehand then he saw and heard the flash. felt a shock run through his body then he passed out. you see a small memorial. a flower and candle has been set up right outside the hospital here. we're still waiting to find out what the identity of the individual here. what his identity is and of course there's another man in grave condition being treated at ucla medical center. the others we're told are all stable tonight. for now live in marina del rey. i'm christine oe donald. you don't need an aquarium ticket or boat tour to see some of the fascinating creatures living in the bay. how a kind of sting ray became a sunday tourist attraction. >> reporter: the sunday flea market tents offer wears from the mundane to the unusual.

>> look. >> reporter: the unusual -- >> look look. >> reporter: usually getting attention. >> they're feeding on sea weeds. >> reporter: it's not the geese getting all the attention. the cameras aren't focused on the crabs or the birds or the bees. dozens of sting rays. >> baby ones, big ones. >> reporter: putting on a show most have only seen in aquariums. >> they look kind of like rugs. >> reporter: like flying carpets, flapping their rings. a sting ray freeway right below the 880 freeway. >> i've been coming here for over 40 years and i've never seen them up this close. except for the aquarium. >> reporter: these are bat rays the kind of sting ray native to san francisco bay. a marine educator told us they come to inland waters from time to time but usually not in these numbers or not that big. the drought may be bringing

them in. lack of salt water increases them to look for food. there was a sighting in lake merit earlier this year. the marine educators say these sightings are signs of healthy water ways. noelle walker. mark landis frequently invited former and current students to use his apartment. a male student discovered a surveillance camera disguised as a tissue box. that discovery prompted a police investigation. he thought accounts at sf state from 1986 to last friday when

he resigned. testimony will continue in the molestation trial of a former concord teacher. joseph martin is accused of molesting male students. he pled not guilty to 150 counts involving 14 former students. on thursday, a data expert testified that child porn website history and suspicious searches were found on two computers belonging to martin. martin's defense attorney argued that martin may have accidentally been redirected to the website through unintended pop ups. a vallejo man shot and wounded a pit bull today after police say the dog and another pit bull were threatening people. neighbors say the two dogs were roaming around lincoln road west this morning and acting aggressively. one woman said she encountered a dog as she tried to get inside her house. >> they were coming toward me. you know. so and i told him, shoo, get out here, shoo shoo. >> reporter: police say that's when a man ran inside his home and returned with a loaded gun. the man who shot one of the

dogs in the paw. the dog is expected to survive. animal control took both dogs into custody. one woman was taken from the scene by ambulance. although it's not clear how she was injured. newlyweds from japan are among the 26,000 competitors who ran the san francisco marathon. not as colorful as the beta breaker the marathoners endure a tougher course. they start at 5:30 and they ran to the embarcadero and then the mission with lots of hills in between. the top male winner capped his rival who took second place. >> it feels good to win one. he actually passed me in mile 25. about one mile from the end. i thought that was it but i took it. >> the next time you run it, you want to win again and it's not always easy to do that.

>> top female runner anna brenton won for the second time she celebrated by going home to berkeley and playing with her kids. water restrictions and a lot of dry grass around the bay area. but places that have some water are also feeling the effects of the drought. how it's causing businesses to dry up at lake tahoe. and you've heard about the lightning strikes in los angeles, we told you about earlier in the show. meteorologist mark tamayo is tracking the possibility of thunderstorms here overnight. we'll have the full forecast coming up next.

business at lake tahoe. last week the lake level was about a foot above its natural rim. tomorrow the sam harbor boat ramp will close for the rest of the season when normally it's open year round. a rafting company says low flows from the truckee river will shut down rafting. and if the lake level drops another foot. paddle boat cruises may also stop running. the bay area today, a little bit cooler right near the immediate coastline. but that's been the constant. those numbers heating back up into the upper 90s to near 100 degrees. take a look at the highs from this afternoon. 101 in antioch, 100 in fairfield. oakland 78 degrees and santa rosa 92. some developments to our south. of course toward southern california the rain showers, the unsettled weather with the thunderstorms there. right now not as much coverage as we take a closer look at the radar. there we go with live doppler sweeps. a little bit of activity closer

to the -- newest numbers showing you 72 in fairfield, antioch right now currently very cool at 80 degrees. we still have the coastal fog with a few patches pushing into the bay. a bit of a sea breeze kicking in. partly cloudy skies, coastal fog. we're still talking about lots of 90s for the inland areas over the next few days basically for wednesday, thursday and into friday. overnight lows first thing tomorrow morning starting out the day in the mid-50s to the low 60s. partly cloudy skies into the afternoon hours. so the temperatures to start off the day off to a mild start out there. san jose 61 degrees. tomorrow there's a slight chance of a thundershower. this area of high pressure is in command of our weather and this is producing the warm

temperatures throughout the bay area. as we come in a bit tighter. it'll be humid once again. muggy for monday and into tuesday. tomorrow there's a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorms. pushing into the region by the afternoon hours. now here's our forecast model we'll put this into motion. you will see this nice clouds and fog. some higher clouds approaching the region monday afternoon into monday night. look what happens into a tuesday. a lot of clouds paying us a visit. and a lot of activity showing up tuesday morning to reflect the instability out there. partly crowd -- cloudy skies coming in. still warm to hot inland. oakland 79. livermore 96 degrees. san jose in the upper 80s and morgan hill mid-90s and san francisco mainly in the 60s but topping out right around 70 degrees. here's a look ahead your five day forecast. a chance of a shower or thunderstorms monday. something to keep an eye on.
