>> now at noon, just hours before the trade deadline, a major move by the oakland as . the block buster trade involving two time home run derby winner yoenis cespedes. how fans are racket reacting to the deal. he was accused of accepting thousands of dollars in primes and setting up an international arms deal. leland yee is back in court today. and one of the first in the bay area to have a drone. plans to use this new device. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now.

this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >> good afternoon, it is a block buster trade that few bay area sports fans saw coming. the oakland as have traded yoenis cespedes to the boston red sox. sal castaneda joins us live from oakland where the as fans are stunned. >> reporter: good afternoon john. john, yoenis cespedes is now a boston red sox player. and when that was revealed this morning, the as fan base reacted with shock. i want to show you some video. yoenis cespedes made national headlines with his amazing throw from left field back in june. what's amazing to some is how the as as the best team in baseball traded away their cleanup hitter. who does that? well billy beam does i guess. and traded for jon lester and also jonny gomes. he comes back to the as once

again. many as fans say this will only be a good trade if the as win it all. >> if they don't win the world series, it's a bad trade. though we weren't beginning to get yoenis cespedes back another year, witwall have been great to have him around. >> i'm a big yoenis cespedes fan. i was disappointed to wake up to the news today. but i know what jon lester could bring to the team and i loved jonny gomes. it is sad to see yoenis cespedes leave, though and a lot of fans are hurt by it. >> reporter: pitcher jon lester is the main guy in the trade. one of the best pitchers in baseball. he has post season success and many baseball fans say he is a legitimate number one. now the as have been trying to get over the hump. they want to have a little more success in the post season. this mornings' trade has been the talk of baseball. >> i saw he had been traded. he is one of our biggest stars. so it was really shocking.

in march, federal agents arrested state senator yee. he has since been suspended from office. but is still receiving a salary of $95,000 a year. part of the additional charges accuses yee of taking bribes in exchange for votes. during the march sweep of san francisco locations, agents arrested 19 other defendants in the case including raymond shrimp boy chow. he pleaded not guilty. then a swarm of cameras surrounded the suspended senator as he left the courthouse. both yee and his attorneys declined to comment today. his next court appearance is scheduled a week from today. august 7. live in san francisco, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. police are trying to discover the identity of a body discovered in front of a home

on griffin drive. officers arrived and found an african american man in his 20s shot in the torso. >> they are going to conduct the investigation. obviously, the first hours of any type of investigation are this sort of critical. so we have to be careful as to what information is released because we don't want to jeopardize in integrity of the investigation. >> police say the victim was carrying no id at the time. they are asking any witnesses to come forward. if woman killed last weekend in vallejo has been identified as 40-year-old erica brian. she and her five-year-old son were violently attacked saturday. darryl wakefield is the suspect. investigators say other people were in the home at the time. and an eight-year-old boy called 911. so far, police have not officially said how bryan died or the relationship when here and wakefield. police are investigating an early morning shooting in which a woman was hit by gunfire in the neck as she was sleeping in

bed. happen at 4:00 this morning at west fifth street near l street. officers found a 23-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the back of her neck. a bullet fired outside the home went through the walls and hit her. she was take ton the hospital and is expected to survive. police have a new tool to help them fight crime. this will help from above. janine de la vega joins us with more. >> reporter: john, there has been concern with privacy and surveillance with the use of drones but that didn't stop the san jose police department from purchasing one. they felt it would be a useful tool for assessing bomb threat situations. police bought one of the unmanned aircrafts for just under $7,000 in january. using federal bran money. the drone looks very similar to the one used in this video. they wanted to device to help the bomb squad in assessing

threats. they say it is beneficial to have the device. having a drone is also more cost effective. >> the drone would allow us to go and hover over short distances. and low altitude. and again, sometimes that offers our bomb technicians a better vantage point. it will give us real life footage. what is device is to render the situation safe. >> reporter: the american civil liberty's union has brought up concerns about whether or not law enforcement agencies would use drones for search warrants or surveillance. at this point, the police say they are still in the research phase and just plan on using its for the bomb squad. they are still working on writing up guidelines on the uses. it has not been flown yet. the department has to go through the lengthy process of getting approve from the federal aviation administration

to have it in air space. reporting live, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. a shortage of officers could force the san jose police department to eliminate its motorcycle traffic unit. the 11 motorcycle officers may be redeployed to patrol car units. police are caying the change because there are not enough officers to respond to emergency calls. the department has struggled to maintain officers since the passage of measure b which cut pension benefits. a woman missing on mount hamilton all night was found safe this morning. santa clara county sheriffs office says christina puckett disappeared after getting separated from her husband around grant ranch road. she was located early this morning. mild overnight temperatures helped. >> she was in great health. it was in the 70s . she had a light jacket and a long sleeve shirt. she was comfortable most of the

night. >> puckett was reunited with her husband shortly after she was found. car owners in napa are being warned about gas thieves. >> it is the last day of july and steve paulson will be here to tell us if the unusual weather pattern will carry into august. and the search is on in the south bay for two robbers accused of breaking into a home and holding a boy at gunpoint.

>> happening now, prosecutors are continuing the cross- examination of a teacher charged with 150 counts of molestation involving 14 former students. ouroboroses is in the courtroom. he denied being motivated by fear that they would tell something what went wrong. he taught them the difference between affection and abuse. closing arguments are expected next week. san jose police are searching for two robbers who held a 17-year-old boy at gunpoint in his own home. john jonathan wong says he was taking a nap when he heard glass breaking. then someone was putting a

towel over his head and wrapped him in duck tape. >> he broke in. put a towel over my head. then he ran around the house until he left. >> surveillance video shows one other intruder. wong's family thinks the robbers chose their house at random. the city of oakland is hours away of announcing the director of the citizen's police review board. it could help improve relations between the community and the police department. the new director has more than 20 years of experience investigating police misconduct. he was a sergeant in the indianapolis police department and in the chicago police department. presentation begins at 5:00 this evening. oakland is getting a new garage company. after the contract with waste management is set to expire. they charge $30 a month.

but the company had proposed increasing its fees by $9 a month. california waste solutions offered a lower bid adjust under $37 a month per customer. now oakland has awarded the ten year contract to california waste solutions. stop hiding, $15 is why we are fighting. >> higher wages were the focus of a protest by fast food workers in front of a mcdonalds in oakland. the demonstration is part of a larger nationwide movement calling on fast food companies to pay their workers $15 an hour. right now, they are earning minimum wage. mcdonalds says it can't control what the franchises pay the workers but that claim was refuted calling mcdonalds a joint employer. napa police are warning people to keep a an eye on their parked collars after someone punctured gas tanks and

drained them. the vandalism is widespread throughout the city. the damage can be very expensive to repair. >> kind of like the converter stories going around for a while. there were six story ins a watt mart parking lot that had the converters cut off. it is hard to say. so it is just craziness. just all craziness. >> firefighters have been responding to many of the calls because of the large amount of large gas leaks onto the road creating a hazard. suvs and pickup trucks are the main targets. thieves have been striking during the day and at night. a dog named champ lived up to his name when he helped get a hayward family to safety after their garage caught fire at 3:00 this morning at a home on sparrow road. a man and his two sons were inside the home when it happened. they got out of thanks to champ who barked. it was also a frightening wakeup call for the neighbors.

>> there was a fire in the back. i thought it was my house because i have a tank. so when i ran to the yard, i saw smoke coming out. and then the fire truck was on there. >> the fire was contained to the garage and no one was hurt. fire crews are making progress against the wild fire burning in yosemite national park. it has burned 39,000 acres so far. six square miles. 46% contained. last night authorities reopened the highway 120 entrance to the park. residents in that area are still under an evacuation notice. on his last day of july, i can say temperatures here at noon are running a little cooler than they have the last couple of days. definitely 24 hours ago. the reason being bigger fog bank and also a much stronger delta breeze which is still holding. it has been diagnose off

29 in travis. concord northwest, a northwest at oakland. we have not had a northwest breeze in almost the entire month allowing temperatures to be very warm in the ocean. they have cooled off a little bit. that helps. northwest sfo. northwest san jose. i haven't seen that the entire month. the key since it has been warm here, these are the temperatures now. again 73 only in oklahoma city at 2:00 in the afternoon. these are temperatures they would see in october. 70 in denver, 76 in dallas. 74 in little rock. the key is they had a system going through, cloud cover, some of that thinning out. they had heavy rain there. a lot of tropical moisture into new mexico and arizona. it is 99 down there in fresno. it is 100 in las vegas. 109 palm springs but the fog bank is ruling here and it will win out for a cooler pattern. san francisco is only 61. the coolest in a long time at

noon. definitely on the cool side. it will take another couple of days for clear lake, ukiah, vacaville. 82 san rafael. walnut creek, 92 with a little bit of a breeze. brentwood still hot. 71 berkeley. they are taking off a few degrees on the temps. san jose, 84. 80s on the peninsula. temperatures coming down the last couple of days. i think tomorrow is the only day there might be a little bump up. after that, it looks cooler going into the weekend. especially sunday and monday. >> and it looks like the drought is getting considerably worse. >> about three quarters of the state under exceptional drought. that is as dry as it gets here. but there is rain in other places. eventually, it will balance out, but it is bade for us right now. we have two or three months before rain season kicks in. >> and fire season is in full swing. the 49ers in the city of
