look closely at the top of your screen. surveillance video obtained by ktvu news catches the moment of impact as a munni train slams into a vehicle in san francisco. good evening i'm ken wayne. >> and i'm heather holmes. one crash involved a munni train the other a bus. both happened at about 1:30 this afternoon. a total of 40 people were hurt. 23 of them went to hospitals. the bus accident happened along gary boulevard on the busy 38 line near japan town. the train accident happened on

the t third line on ennis in the bay view. we have team coverage. ktvu jana katsuyama tonight with new information on the bus crash. but first debora villalon with surveillance video that continues to contradict the truck driver's story. >> that severe video is prerevealing. what can tell you tonight is the injuries were minor to moderate. it's luckily, this was a relatively slow speed crash. surveillance video catches the crash. the 18 wheeler turns left. knocking the train off the track, passengers off their seats. >> a lot of hollering, a lot of p pushing a lot of people running across the street. >> reporter: anthony barry came to the hospital to get checked

out. >> it hurts like hell. it hurts like hell sir. >> incidents on third street something we've been paying attention to. >> reporter: lights with signs to keep cars, semis and trains separate on this busy corridor. >> the operator did everything he could have done. >> it's the veteran operator's first ever accident. and seeing the big rig looming. he dropped the overhead wires for safety and threw on his emergency brake. >> for somebody that's an operator it's extremely upsetting because it's the sense of powerlessness. >> reporter: the crash punctured the gas tank on the big rig and diesel fuel leaked but was contained. the truck was towed from the intersection. it's driver based in southern california. >> i guess i got too close to that. >> reporter: he said he was sitting still when the railcar sideswiped him. >> i was waiting, getting

closer to the street. so all the traffic can go by. and i heard a big bang. i got too close. >> reporter: the surveillance video clearly shows a deliberate left turn across the munni track. police say a citation is certain. and as for the coincidence of two nummi accidents just blocks apart. >> we don't hear of thing that is could have happened order nearly happened and unfortunately today these two did happen. >> reporter: the railcar eventually made its way to the yard under its own power. damage to the $2 million vehicle not as bad as first feared. it will carry passengers again once it's repaired. reporting live in san francisco, debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. now to jana katsuyama with new information on the bus crash. and the response, jana. >> reporter: ken, it was a big

response this yellow tape here shows where they marked off the triage area for the 20 people who were injured in the bus crash here on geary. i've learn tonight that one passenger was taken down the street to kaiser hospital according to spokesman there and admitted to the hospital tonight. we do understand that this was such a big crash combined with the other one that actually triggered the city's emergency management procedures. >> the impact from the crash was enough to shatter the front window of a munni bus then the metal door frame where passengers enter and exit. >> 20 people were injured and 12 were transported to the hospital. >> police say the eight other injured passengers were treated at the scene. fire personnel, police and first responders were working quickly to care for all of the passengers. >> they were all lying on the street and as you know they had them down on the ground they were getting all the things to put under the back, watching their necks. >> reporter: police say the crash happened around 1:30 p.m.

the number 8munni bus had been west bound. the bus driver swerved to avoid it but ended up hitting the back of a second large dump truck. >> it moved forward and hit another vehicle that was attempting to park here on geary. that driver is okay. >> a crash scene that shut down the busy geary corridor for hours and triggered an alert for seven bay area hospitals. >> san francisco's emergency management system notifies hospitals when there's a major incident just so that we're on alert that you know we could have patients coming in. and we received a notification. >> as for the investigation police say they will be reviewing video footage from cameras on the bus that point at the driver and at the road as well as the vehicle speed, why the first truck stopped and the condition of the munni bus driver. >> the driver will go through a drug and alcohol test for standard procedure and then we turn over the video to the police department for the

investigation. >> reporter: this past hour i learned the bus driver has been with munni about three years. i understand he has been put on nondriving status as police investigate. jana katsuyama, ktvu news. the south bay had some transit troubles of its own this afternoon. a twitter user sent us these pictures of a vta truck burning on the side of highway 101. the bus was on its way to a maintenance yard when the driver noticed the smoke and pulled over. the driver was the only person on board and got off safely. happening now, crews are working on the golden gate bridge leaving some of the lanes at the toll plaza closed overnight. the closures are in both directions and expected to last until at least 7:00 tomorrow morning. crews are restriping lanes as part of the project to reinstall a median barrier last year. an elderly man who drove his car on to a sidewalk in front of a palo alto cafe will take a new test to keep his driver's license. the crash happened yesterday on

university avenue during the busy rush hour. he has to take a test if he wants to keep driving. notices like these are issues after police are concerned of a person's ability to operate a vehicle. san jose police want people to take a good look at video of an armed robbery in progress to see if anyone can help identify the -- it was shortly before 10:00 p.m. police say a man wearing a black beanie and long black jacket pulled out an assault rifle and robbed three people working at the station. police say he should be considered armed and dangerous. they say the weapon is an m1 carving with a high capacity magazine. after failing to reach any consensus on the crisis at the

border. only after a mini rebellion yesterday by gop representatives from border states. the president has threatened a veto calls it extreme and unworkable. the nation's unemployment rate is up even though more and more people are finding jobs. the labor department reported today the number of jobs increased in july for a sixth consecutive month. but the pace of job growth slowed and that was unexpected. 209,000 jobs were added in july that compares to june's number of 298,000. the jobless rate rose .1 of 2%. this is due to more people entering the job market. stock markets fell again today to close out the worse week in two years. nasdaq lost 17. traders moved money out of stocks and into less volatile bonds and gold.

levi stadium gets its first big test tomorrow. the san jose earthquakes will be breaking in the new home of the new niners. as ann rubin reports, a party is planned that fans will not soon forget. >> reporter: they're sprucing up the outside and polishing up the inside crews at levi stadium are hard at work within hours of the first event and fans cannot wait for the doors to open. >> it's very cool. it's not every day you get to see a new stadium. >> reporter: workers tested the sound system. the power and made sure the wifi was working from every seat. others were tasked with stocking the concession stands with cold beer. contractors came in to meet last minute deadlines. >> that's what we do we're always last minute craziness. >> reporter: the earthquakes too got in one last minute practice before the big event. >> we're going to have a lot of

happening now crews working to fix the sewer in the peninsula. one that could have been leaking for days. now neighboring worry about contamination. patti lee is live, she learned residents complained about the test weeks ago but tests failed to find any contamination. >> that's what upset people the most. that the test that the department relies on failed to detect contamination and only the worsening odor tiped the city off to the ongoing problem. >> it's, yeah. >> reporter: at laurel wood park there's an unmistakable scent of sewage. >> it's really strong right now. >> reporter: signs went up in the park today warning parkgoers to stay out of the contaminated creek. >> especially with like, mrsa

and eboli -- ebola and air contaminations it's not good right now. >> that's real frightening and this is a pretty popular park especially with kids and my own kids. so that worries me. >> reporter: the deputy director of environmental services says odor complaints led to a test of the water this morning which showed potential contamination. >> once it became obvious, we jumped into action and here we are. you know late on friday afternoon getting this sewer line repaired. >> reporter: we asked why a test done two days ago did not spot the contamination, which would have spared parkgoers two days of contamination. >> you assume the tests are

accurate enough to detect those kind of stuff. >> reporter: tonight some are calling for the city to rethink their testing. new details tonight on a molestation case. tonight martin's defense attorney told us 34 of the 150 counts have now been dropped. the former teacher has maintained the physical contact with students was not sexually motivated. closing argumenting are scheduled for thursday. a woman at stanford is now under arrest. police arrested sandiapur yesterday. officers spotted him on the

street and recognized him from a woman's description. a woman in a park in a palo alto park reported that a man started talking to her then aggressively began touching and kissing her. on july 22nd another woman reported a similar incident to stanford police. the suspect faces misdemeanor battery charges. the iraq war veteran injured several years ago in an occupy demonstration is speaking out about this week's decision to reinstate the police officer who was accused of that injury. today olson posted a video on you tube responding to news that rose is getting his job back. >> throwing a grenade at people who are trying to help an injured person is one of the

how to stop. >> reporter: while the two patients might receive some experimental treatment, most of what the emory team will do is simply offer supportive care. their goal is to keep the patients alive long enough for the body to fight off the infection. in atlanta, john roberts, fox news. and at this time no specific screening is being done at u.s. airports for passengers who may be infected by the ebola virus. health officials say screening passengers leaving the african nations would be too costly. however if an infected person did fly to the u.s. two dozen airports have quarantined areas where sick travelers can be isolated and checked out. the world health organization is in discussions with travel officials about possible new policies. it was warm out there today. temperatures got into the low 100s in some places it's going to be slightly cooler the next couple of days. because the fog gets along the coast is going to start to push

further inland. sort of restricted itself to the coast the last couple of mornings and burned off very quickly so it was hot during the day. what we're going to see tomorrow is a little further encroachment of the fog. slower burn off and slightly cooler. temperatures tomorrow are going to cool down. i don't think we'll see many triple digits. i think most of the hot spots will be upper 90s and the lows upper 70s and low 80s. you see the on shore winds this is temperature. these are temperatures but you see the winds where they've been based on those temperatures. you see antioch is still hitting 86. these inland cities are pretty brisk on shore breeze tonight which is something we haven't seen for a while. inland cities are going to start to cool pretty rapidly. wind at the san francisco airport are getting along pretty good. 20-mile an hour gusts at 25. livermore just 9 miles per hour. so wednesday are ramping up a more typical pattern is under way and we're into a cooling

sonoma county fair say some fairgoers are getting flees. the fair has been going on for more than a week now and as ktvu's paul chambers found out more than $10,000 worth of phony tickets have already showed up at the box office. >> reporter: the sonoma coupty -- county fair is a place to have fun. but this year, someone has made it a scram. selling fake tickets everyone a youth group. take a close look at your tickets. these red and green wild tickets with the value of $20 and these pink ones are counter fit. these style tickets were sold four years ago but the fake ticket series do not match any inventory they ever told and believe someone did a good job

of printing duplicates of the old ones. >> craigslist, they were standing in parking lots across the the street from the fair. >> reporter: beside it is youth group, management says some familys have spent $500 on the fake tickets. on the fair's website it gives a warning about the scam. although the fair hasn 't made any money on the fake ticket scam the management is willing to make a deal. >> they will match one for one. if someone buys a wristband, they will give the wristband when they buy one. >> reporter: the best thing to do not to be a victim of the scam is to buy your tickets at the fair which runs through august 10th. california prison officials are pledging to take a more gentle approach with mentally ill immates. this after graphic images of prisoners being repeatedly doused with pepper sprays in

their cells were made public. in a federal court filing today they said it will create a system wide culture change and how 23,000 mentally ill offenders are restrained and isolated. a recording has emerged former president bill clinton on talking about how he almost killed osama bin laden. president said this a day before september 11. >> i could have, and i could have killed him. but i would have had to destroy a little town called kandahar and killed women and children. and then i wouldn't have been no better than him. so i didn't do it. >> reporter: the u.s. was after osama bin laden because he was believed to be the master mind of bombings in tanzania and kenya in 1998. u.s. forces finally killed

ktvu channel 2 news. facebook is back up and running after ad widespread outage that affected users in multiple countries. facebook says it is still investigating the outage. the site was down for just about 45 minutes. auto makers ford and toyota both posted higher sales than in july. toyota was up 12%. most othermanufacturers reported figures below expectations. industry sales were down 1.4 million vehicles but that still fell short of what analysts had expected. a new report ranks the 2014

expected to declare a drought emergency and adopt mandatory restrictions but it's unlikely to approve fines. a second chance tonight for a bob cat that was injured on a bay area highway rescued by a driver and nursed back to health. as ktvu's cara liu tells us, the bob cat was released today back to the wild. >> reporter: a big day for a young male bob cat hit by a car on highway 34 in sonol. after surgery to his left leg and more than two months of rehab for head trauma at the wildlife center of silican valley, rescuers were ready to release him. >> come on, come on dude. >> reporter: after opening the cage door workers had to tip the crate then take the top off before he took a few tentative steps out. he was likely still woozy from the tranquilizers used to give him an ear tag this morning. >> there's also a lot of people here which made him a little bit more uneasy. sometimes of course it depends on the animal they will either bolt out of the kennel or they're too scared to run away.

>> good boy. look how beautifully he blends in there. >> reporter: after nearly 10 minutes, this guy eventually made a run for it into this open space in san ramon. >> it feels great to see wildlife go back to where it should be. >> reporter: how this bob cat got here is also quite a story. it starts back in may when olga silico was driving down the freeway. worried he was going to be killed. she decided to put a towel over him, pick him up and put him in the back of her prius. olga who is deaf used a translator over the phone to tell us what happened. this video shows the moments after they opened a trunk and saw a bob cat hissing back at them. >> this is just never happened. >> reporter: tonight with a wild story behind him that bob

tensions over ellis activations in san francisco erupted again today with protesters blocking two tech shuttle buses. >> the demonstration happened at valencia and 24th in the mission district. protesters say seniors on fixed incomes and disabilities are bearing the brunt of evictions. on the past 10 years evictions were within five blocks of private tech bus stops. >> it's like when they clear cut the rain forest and then just plant palm oil trees it doesn't work. >> reporter: today is the first day tech shuttles began paying a fee of $3.55 per stop per day

a little bit early of bud break. >> vineyards began picking its sparkly wine grapes. the harvest for the other nonsparkling reds and whites should begin from late to mid- august again a few weeks earlier than usual. while wineries say they can't be entirely sure yet the preliminary forecast is that 2014 should go down as a very good year. the quality of wine will be a little below average but the quality should be high. >> the stuff i tested coming out of the press pan from what we pressed for sparkling wine, it had a good concentration, good balance of sugar to acidity. so so far so good. >> reporter: jay vineyards is fortunate to have its own wells for irrigation. but because of the drought some wineries have had to truck in water or using reclaimed water. >> we're not applying a lot of

water. we're applying water when needed. >> reporter: the bottom line is in the region that while the drought hasn 't widespread problems to the winery this year no one seems to want a dry year next season. the drought should pick up next week and most likely end in mid- october. a whale fossil believed to be 12 to 15 million years old was unearth today in southern california. volunteers worked for hours to remove the beline whale from a huge rock of a home in rancho palos verdes. there's only a handful of fossils in existence. thousands of dogs are headed to new homes as part of a chihuahua air lift. here's a picture of some of the dogs on its flight to vancouver washington. after no one in the bay area adopted the dogs the alameda

area shelters sent the dogs to new homes. the demand of small dogs is high in vancouver. it's going to be a bit cooler tomorrow and that's mainly going to be in the inland bay valleys. instead of 72 we're going to find temperatures in the upper 90s. fog along the coast. you can see it here and you see the thunderstorms up in the mountains. most of the fog is going to stay pretty much along the coast. we're going to see a push of fog around here. which is a little further than we saw this morning. tomorrow morning slightly cooler because of this. sunday morning we're going to see a big push of fog all the way into these inland bay valleys. temperatures could drop a good 10 degrees. fog right along the coast and
