. now at noon, a curveball from mother nature. an earthquake rattles the big island of hawaii as residents are preparing for the first hurricane to hit in over 20 years. >> an urban search-and-rescue team called to a mobile home park in san jose. what they were looking for that forced them to rappel into a manhole. >> and it's been more than three decades since the mass cut suicide in jonestown. the remains of nine victims were discovered in delaware.

the first time in over 20 years, the hawaiian islands are on track to get hit by a hurricane, with the second one behind it. as residents on the tropical islands prepare for the storms, they took another hit from mother nature, one of -- when a 4.5 magnitude earthquake rattled the big island. good afternoon, i'm tori campbell. we have team coverage. mark demayo is following the storms. thank you before the -- but first, we have more from brian here. >> the impact is an air travel. we know at least two flights from sfo to hawaii were cancelled because of the hurricane threat. a majority of the flights did take off ahead of the storm, but with nervous passengers. as hurricane iselle and julio make their way toward the hawaiian islands, passengers looking to get away for r&r looked stressed at sfo. >> was told it was going to be high winds in maui, but how

high winds? yes, i have second thoughts about going. >> reporter: the high winds according to forecasters, could reach as high as 80 miles an hour for iselle, with a downpour of 12 inches of rain, raising flooding concerns. kathy thompson is heading home to australia and didn't know about the hurricane threat until she got to sfof a -- for a layover. >> i'm going to go to the flight people and find out what they say and what else can i do? >> reporter: at least two flights from sfo have been cancelled, including a united airlines flight at 9 this morning to honolulu and united flights scheduled for 7:30 tonight to the big island. while passengers are deciding whether or not to catch a flight here, for those on the island, they're stocking up on supplies. basic necessities like bottled water and toilet paper are in high demand and in short supply. >> we have the containers of water today. we're bringing up more as it's available and getting out of the holding yard and we'll bring it up. as soon as they can release it, we get it up and up load it. >> reporter: airlines and hotels are waiving cancellation fees because of the storm.

>> my aunt lives there, so she's giving us local updates like i am downgraded. okay, upgraded and okay, we're going to stock up on water. so, we're okay. >> reporter: we called oakland and san jose and all of their flights left toward hawaii. of course, they're keeping an eye on the storm. in the newsroom, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and let's go to mark tamayo in the can, it, vu weather center where he's tracking the two hurricanes. >> the last time we were talking about the landfall and hurricane in hawaii, that was in 1992, and this is a live camera via skype toward maui, looks like a nice, quiet thursday morning and they're getting ready for a hurricane approaching, probably in the form of a tropical storm. right now, just look at the observations in lahain a, with winds gusting at -- with winds gusting and this is the satellite perspective of the first hurricane. the center is 216 miles from the big island of hawaii.

we're tracking, too, and this is a wider perspective in the satellite loop. with winds of 80 miles an hour, a category 1 and the stronger one with strengthening hurricane julio, packing winds of 105 miles an hour. here's the forecast track. we don't do this too much, but we have dual forecast tracks for the hurricanes and you will notice that julio will weaken into a tropical storm and move to the north of the islands. the main concern in the short- term, hurricane iselle will be making landfall, most likely, as a category 1 hurricane for the big island of hawaii and moving out as you can see that eventual track to the southern periphery of the islands of oahu and kuai. we have to talk about the hurricane warning in place for the island of hawaii. the rest of the island chain, we're talking about a tropical storm warning and that could be changing if the track moves a little bit. the rainfall expectations on the order of five to eight inches with isolated amounts approaching 12 inches. over the next few hours, over the next six to 12 hours, we're

expecting hurricane-force winds to approach the big island of hawaii, a tropical storm warning of tropical storm-force winds approaching the rest of the island chain toward maui. we'll keep an eye on the forecast track in a few minutes. >> all right, thank you, mark. and for the latest on the hurricanes heading for hawaii, stay with us. you can follow us on twitter and facebook and also go to www.ktvu.com where we have a hurricane guide complete with a hurricane tracker. look under the hot topics section. and as i mentioned, as hawaii was bracing for the approaching hurricanes, it was hit by a moderate earthquake this morning. a 4.5 quake rattled the northern tip of hawaii's big island. it happened at 6:24 this morning local time. the u.s. geological survey said it centered seven miles from the town of waimea. there are no reports of damage or injuries. and a frantic call of a woman stuck in a manhole leads to a huge response by the san jose fire department. after nearly an hour of

searching, no one was found. authorities say this is not the first time neighbors have reported hearing voices in the sewer. good afternoon. >> good afternoon, tori. >> reporter: officials tell me this is the second time they're called out to the spanish cove mobile home park because residents here thought they heard tapping or voices coming from that manhole. firefighters received a 911 call around 8:30 this morning that a woman might be stuck in the sewer. the urban search-and-rescue team and the hazardous materials team rushed to the scene. a tripod was set up with a rope to help two firefighters rappel down the manhole. once down, they had to crawl into a trike-inch pipe running underneath the mobile home park from center road to coyote creek, where there is a homeless encampment. >> while they were down in the hole, they could clearly hear people talking at the other end and they could also hear cars in a rhythmic motion going over

what sounded like a pipe behind them. >> reporter: firefighters say that those voices were coming from the homeless encampment and determined that residents mistook echoing in the pipes as a person trapped. a woman who lives in the mobile home park observed a man laying on the ground with his ear to the manhole cover and that is why she grew concerned. >> i see the man outside a manhole, and he asked for help many times and it's allowed, so my next neighbor was, see what happen and he said that there is under the ground there. >> reporter: they have to take a call like that seriously. there is a possibility that someone might be in danger. it was 40 firefighters and emergency personnel to assist them in standing by in case. the urban search-and-rescue team that help side the same crew that responded to

hurricane katrina and 9/11. reporting live from san jose, jineenedela vega. >> thank you. and a defense attorney called federal racketeering charges laughable following a hearing for suspended state senator leland yee and others today. he had no comment for reporters as he left the hearing in san francisco. the proceeding concerned whether to divide the 29 defends into -- defendants into groups for trial. the suspended state senator and chinatown association leader are among those charged why the sweeping corruption case. chow's defense attorney said the alleged links between the defendants are week and -- weak and accused the government of dragging the case out in hopes of getting those in jail, such as chou, to take a plea deal. >> e. to the continuing coverage of the ebola outbreak. an emergency hearing is underway on capitol hill to evaluate the ebola virus threat. this comes as two american aid workers are improving after

contracting ebola while in west africa. ktvus kyla campbell is live on capitol hill where they said it's unprecedented and a crisis. >> reporter: the cdc director said that we can conquer the ebola outbreak, but it won't be quick or easy. we're taking a live look right now at the emergency congressional hearing where the cdc director is speaking right now. he said the ebola virus is spreading to an extent not seen before. >> this doesn't appear to be a change in the virus, but it's a new development in how and where the virus is spreading, and it makes control much more difficult. >> reporter: he said it's the television time we're dealing with ebola in the u.s. two american aid workers contracted ebola while in west africa. dr. kent brantly and nancy writebol were both transferred to emory university hospital this week. both showed signs of improvement after receiving a secret serum never tested on

humans before. the cdc director said more information needs to be gathered. >> we don't know whether that treatment is helpful, harmful, or doesn't have any impact. we're unlikely to know from the experience of two or a handful of patients whether it works. >> the cdc raised the ebola response to level one, but he said there is no increased risk for americans. the cdc director said ebola has to be stopped at the source in west africa and that is why the cdc is sending an additional 50 staff members to the ground there by the end of next week. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. and the remains of some of the victims of the jonestown mass cults murder suicide have been found -- cut murder/suicide have been found. where and how they got there more than three decades after the massacre. >> and the barricades are going up for the outside lands music festival. why there is a special eye on security this year.

. we're following new developments stemming from the 1978 mass cult murder/suicide in joinstown, indiana. police in delaware said the cremated remains of nine victims of the massacre turned up in a former funeral home in

dover. bodies from the tragedy have been brought to dover air force base. the u.s. military's largest motor rarey. 918 lives were lost in jonestown, many of the victims were from the bay area. the cult leader founded the people's temple in indianapolis in 1956, and moved his church to northern california in the '60s before relocating to south america. we now know when two important runways in san francisco international airport will reopen. they were shut down months ago to make flying out of the airport safer. the runways one left and one right were temporarily closed in may. they're the ones the planes used to take off in the direction of the bay. sfo said that the runways will be back open and ready to handle most of the airport's departures on sunday. the closure was part of a federally mandated safety project. the length of the runways were extended by using soft concrete, which will act as a superbrake. a new lighting system was added

to the taxiways. ktvu's tom vacar will have more on this on ktvu channel 2 news at 5. we're hearing from the bay area woman who snuck on a flight from san jose to lax. the 62-year-old marilyn hartman walked out of the airport courthouse last night after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of trespassing. she was sentenced two years probation and ordered to stay away from lax. she told reporters she's homeless and did not mean to cause trouble, but described her situation as dire. >> what was your desperate situation? >> oh, e homelessness. homelessness. i really, i had been in some awful situations and it -- so i took desperate measures. >> i am an american first and foremost, and i believe very strongly in the security of the country. and so, in that regard, it was very stupid. >> she does not know what

she'll do next, but we do know that last night los angeles jail guards gave her directions to a nearby shelter. and doctors medical center in san pablo is no longer accepting ambulances. earlier this morning, a hospital spokesperson announced the cash-strapped hospital is turning away ambulances. they are now being redirected to other emergency rooms like kaiser permanente's richmond campus or the summit medical center in berkeley. but the emergency room will still accept walk-ins. the struggling hospital is due to close in october and could shut down sooner since so many employees are leaving for more stable jobs. and a creek on the peninsula remains off-limits to the public because of a sewage leak. we told you about the smelly problem at laurel creek last friday. that creek runs near homes and through laurelwood park in san mateo. according to the reports, the public works department said the sewer has been fixed; however, it's not safe for people to go near the creek due

to contamination. we are one day from the outside lands music festival getting underway in san francisco. ktvus got more. >> reporter: crews work to prepare for outside lands music vesteral -- festival. the workers are working 12- and 13-hour days to turn the park into a concert venue. >> we're going to have approximately about 350 tents that are out here over, what, 107 bands out here and that is tough. we get the job done. >> reporter: organizers say there will be an increased focus on security with video surveillance, bike, and mounted police keeping tabs on the crowd. the move follows the lawsuit filed last year following allegations of a sexual assault at outside lands in 2012.

following noise complaints about the jay-z and beyonce concert, noise is a concern for some neighbors. >> and it's, you know, up there. a little noisy if i open the door and i have friends. they live close by and they said it's very noisy. >> reporter: in past years, organizers reached out to the surrounding neighborhoods, trying to address concerns. shiro suronaga said the concert definitely challenges the neighborhood. >> a lot of traffic. park gets tight around here. >> many residents take it in stride. >> doesn't bother me. >> reporter: it gets underway tomorrow and the gates open at 11. the first musical acts take the stage at noon. in san francisco, cristen for ktvu channel 2 news. and a lot of fog today for

golden gate park and for the weekend. no big changes. in the south bay, we have haze out there. for the most part, partly to mostly sunny skies shaping up to be a nice thursday afternoon out there. we have some fog, though, right near the met coastline and hugging the coast. closer to the golden gate bridge and monterey as well. typical for the bay area. the fog is hugging the coast and will keep the beaches on the cooler side. inland, more sunshine and some haze. sending the smoke away overhead and ha is not completely crystal clear. san francisco, 60 degrees; santa rosa, 74; and some 80s in concord, antioch, and livermore reporting 81 degrees. today, we have the coastal fog and warm numbers inland. the cameras showing you this and you can see some of the haze and that is not cloudy but not clear out there and tomorrow, some morning fog and minor cooling and the weekend will stick with the familiar

theme this time of the year. cool for the beaches, temperatures inland into the 80s. the overall weather pattern over the past few days, we have been tracking this guy. the area of low pressure moved out of town and moving to the south. as a result today, it will be warmer, especially inland and into friday and the weekend, there is a weak system moving in and increasing the onshore breeze. more fog and cooler temperatures into the weekend. they're minor changes and not a big dropoff in temperatures and our forecast models in the shoreline. and to our east, more clouds and some thunderstorms, especially, and in the southern sierra. the clouds regroup and showing up coast side and into the afternoon hours and clearing into the shoreline. friday, cooler than today in most spots. the forecast highs, showing you santa rosa, mid-80s, fairfield, 90 degrees and winds hiccup throughout the afternoon hours and about 10 to 20. oakland, 76 and more neighborhoods for you, san

jose, 83; freemont, 81; san francisco in the upper is 60s, 68 degrees. a look ahead to the five-day forecast with the weekend in view and we'll shave off a few degrees into friday and the temperatures are holding steady into the weekend. these are all minor temperatures, temperature changes from saturday and into sunday. no major heat waves in sight and the humidity, the mugginess will improve over the next few days. we'll keen an eye on hawaii -- we'll keep an eye on hawaii and have an update on the hurricanes, iselle is close to the island now. >> thank you, mark. >> sure. state officials linked two deaths to west nile virus. victor -- vector control plans to conduct ground fogging to prevent mosquitoes in santa clara county. it will take place around benton street and barrows avenue in santa clara and scheduled to begin thea 11:00. it will last until 2:00 a.m., at the latest, weather permitting. for the recent deaths, the first case involved a 74-year- old woman. she reportedly died on july 26th in sacramento county and

had an underlying chronic condition. the second case involved an adult from shasta county, but no other details were released. and the 32-year-old man who is widely considered to be one of the best soccer players in america makes a big announcement. what landon donovan just said about the future of his career.

. stocks turned low or invest -- the internet and phone companys had bigger losses and investors are troubled by the escalating tensions between russia and the west over ukraine. and taking a live look at the big board, the dow is down 106 and the nasdaq is down 32. s&p down 15. and new jobs figures are out today. economists say they point toward stronger economic growth. according to the labor department, first-time jobless claims fell to 289,000. that is down 14,000 from the week before. the government report also said that employers added 209,000 jobs in july. that was the sixth straight month of job gains above 200,000. and dish network could make a bid for t-mobile new that sprint is out of the picture. dish's chairman said it makes sense for the satellite tv operator. there had been reports that dish was looking for a wireless partner now that growth in its
