but we start with how hawaii is bracing for impact. >> reporter: residents bracing for hurricane force winds and a foot or more of rains that could mean mudslide. >> prone areas will take appropriate actions. secure vessels in anticipation. >> reporter: hurricane iselle will make land fall tonight. it will be a category one storm, winds of 80 miles per hour. a hurricane warning is in effect for the big island. making it the first warning for hawaii in 22 years. >> folks in the big island need to realize this storm is anticipated to hold together and make a land fall on the big island today as a hurricane. >> hurricane julio will follow and expected to lose strength as it approaches over the weekend. residents appear to be taking the warning seriously. >> this seems to be busier than normal. >> reporter: while the storms

move closer they were rattled this morning by mother nature. the u.s. geological survey reported a 4.5 earthquake off the coast of the big island. no immediate damage was reported. now to ktvu's chief meteorologist bill martin, is that weakening as it gets closer? >> yeah. the water temperature warmer. that weakthens hurricane and further north it gets -- weakens the hurricane and the further north it gets becomes weaker. that is the good news. bullet dodged in the short term. the big island of hawaii. the winds. the winds blowing strong. around the east side over here. gusts to 24 miles per hour. hilo is for the tropical storm will come ashore with sizable winds. 70 miles per hour as it weakens. there is hurricane iselle,

routh? close to the big ihand. and hurricane julio -- island. and hurricane julio. that will weaken as well. hurricane iselle, the timing, tonight we will see hurricane iselle moving on shore at 11:00 p.m. our time. tropical storm warnings remain. you have a hurricane warning despite it coming on shore as a tropical storm. back it out. you have two hurricanes. soon to be tropical storms. hurricane julio works its way to the north over the weekend. through saturday, sunday and monday. again, i have to say i haven't seen two hurricanes this close to hawaii in my career. the last time a tropical storm hit the big island was 1958. unusual circumstance but the good news looks like that will be down graded to tropical storms right before they hit the island. >> the two hurricanes look dramatic from space. nasa released this youtube

concerns about family they decided not to chance the weather. >> i am not catching a flight back there. i canceled and i am going to go with my sister to seattle. >> i don't want to do that. we are going the opposite way. >> this family of four boarding for a week's vacation unaware of the hurricane. [ indiscernible ] >> can't do much about the weather. make the most of it. >> 2-13 flights from sfo to the islands did cancel. at burkeler she was helping travelers. she says airlines and properties are accommodating. >> they can change without any cost for this window of time. and then the other thing is in the after math we have to make sure that the resorts are not damaged. >> reporter: we just confirmed that flights in hawaii are grounded at this hour. if you have hawaii plans in the coming days we will tell you what you need to know at 6:00 p.m. reporting live at sfo, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we checked in with the other two airports today as well. oakland says all of their flights to hawaii left and arrived this morning on time. mineta international airport says storms haven't effected flights so far.

two flights from hawaii are due to land tonight. and we will be tracking the storms as they continue to develop throughout the next 90 minutes. watching the conditions as they change on radar and monitoring our live cameras. we will bring you updates as we get new information. new developments in the investigation into the cause of our largest wildfires. a man has been charged with starting the fire. the rim fire burned 400 square miles inside yosemite last year. a grand jury returned a indictment against the 32-year- old. he is the hunter accused of starting an illegal camp fire while restrictions were in place. investigators say the fire spread beyond control and burned for two months. a grandmother is recovering from the scare of her life. she was attacked in her home. ktvu's john sasaki joins us

live. that home is in a quiet neighborhood. >> reporter: this is deep creek road and the home is on this block here. nearby residents told me there is little crime here and word left them in shock. >> reporter: this area has an active neighborhood watch program. >> houses seem nice and, you know -- >> reporter: yesterday around 2:30 p.m. the peace was shatted for one family -- shatted for one family -- shattered for one family. . >> reporter: two men saw a older woman was home alone so they walked in the backdoor. >> immediately began duct taping her. one of the suspects duct taped her. while the other suspect pointed a gun at her. >> reporter: with her grandchild asleep and unaware the woman survived the ordeal.

although she was lucky they showed sympathy for her. >> we believe they recognized that she was panicking and having a hard time breathing because they came and moved the tape so she could breathe better. the woman may have blacked out. her purse gone. she called a relative who called 911. >> to know that somebody would break into a house and tie up a grandmother, a child was involved. that is alarming. >> reporter: she was out for a walk today. >> i fell safe. and i walk every day but that creeps me out. i walk all around. p. >> reporter: police are searching for the two robber and describe them as asian men, 35 years old. 5'10", 200 pounds. police told me there were two street robberies in the area last night. the robbers were different

people. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. breaking news now from iraq. the united states is considering air strikes against isis in northern iraq. a decision could come within hours. earlier today isis fighters advanced on the city and there are reports of air strikes. the strikes may have come from the iraqi military or the turkish military. earlier president obama approved air drops to 15,000 refugees stranded and stabbing in the mountains -- starving in the mountains. iraqis fled the isis fighters. some christians were captured and then beheaded. isis is taking control of large parts of iraq and attacking anyone who doesn't subscribe to their beliefs. the remains of 9 victims of

the massacre in 1978 have been found in delaware. investigators discovered the ashes in a closed funeral home in dover. police don't know why the remains were unclaimed. they are trying to identify them so family could be notified. the bodies of 900 victims were brought to dover after the massacre. many were from the bay area. they approved the so-called kill switch bill designed to stem the problem of smart phone theft. it would require shut off functions in smart phones to allow consumers deactivate their phone if stolen. san francisco district attorney sponsored it. manufacturers dropped their opposition to the proposal after lawmakers agreed to amendments. the bill returns to the senate for final approval. a defense attorney called

the government case against raymond chow and others weak. ex-california state senator leland yee smiled but had little to say outside court this morning in san francisco. the judge began to address how the group -- how to group the 29 defendants for trial. outside the court raymond chow's attorney revealed that a request by keith jackson to an under cover agent to see if leland yee could get raymond chow's ankle monitor removed was the only link. >> because that wasn't mentioned by the under cover, the fbi, that is their entire link. >> the defense attorney accused the government of dragging the case out in hopes of getting those in jail to take a plea deal. the body of major general harold greene killed in afghanistan is now in the u.s.

sphraen's outside land summer festival is 24 hours away and there are concerns about safety and noise for people who live around golden gate park tens of thousands of people are expected to attends the festival and ktvu's patti lee is in san francisco where parking is already a problem. >> reporter: that's right. there are crews, traffic is slow and this is early. the first band doesn't take the stage till noon tomorrow. a lot of headliners. tom petty and kanye west. one of the reasons the concert sold out so fast. >> the transformation is underway at golden gate park where 200,000 people will gather over the next three days for outside land. >> we call this the world's

two 13-year-old boys, two 14- year-old boys and one 17-year- old boy were taken into custody. drivers will be reminded of the traffic back ups on the tunnel approach. tomorrow night caltrans plan to close bore number 2 from 8:00 p.m. through noon on saturday. another closure is planned for saturday night through sunday. then they plan to shut it down sunday night through 7:00 a.m. mondays. it is all done for lane realignmentalignment and repaving work. they may repeat the closure the following weekend. giants star hunter pence is having fun with hecklers in new york. it started last week when mets fans poked fun at hunter pence. one said hunter pence puts ketchup on his hog dog. and -- hot dog and hunter pence said hunter pence returns

ktvu channel 2 news starts right now with breaking news. >> following breaking news in solano county. live pictures from news chopper 2 in the center of your screen. a big rig wheels up. the big rig crashed, it is causing problems on interstate 80. we are giving you a live picture from news chopper 2. crews are on the scene. it involved a trailer on a semi. that truck is on its -- whels in the air -- wheels in the air. as a result of the crash all lanes of eastbound 80 connector to southbound 680 are shut down. at this point the best estimate we have for when the lanes will be cleared is 1 hour. news chopper 2 doing a good job of showing us the freeways there. 680 and 80 around the connector. traffic is slow but it does appear to be moving. with one hour to go till the accident site is cleared,

things are only go tag get worse -- going to get worse. this shows the lection of the big rig accident impacting 680 and 80. it will be there for an hour. we will stay on top of the accident and bring you more information as the situation develops. >> a horrible dorffry along -- dorff -- discovery in san francisco today. after firefighters put out a fire clean up crews found a body. ktvu's david stevenson tells us why firefighters didn't spot the body immediately and also about another fire in the same area. 2478 fire was reported by -- >> the fire was reported at 4:30 a.m. this morning. one of three outbuildings next to train tracks in san francisco's visitacion valley. trains were stopped for 15 minutes. it burned to the ground. >> there was no real reason to ovhaul that so crews made sure -- over haul that so crews made sure the fire was out.

news. a judge today ordered a mental health evaluation for a woman accused of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl with a hammer at a school in oakland. the attack happened in a bath room back in may. investigators say the 48-year- old forced the victim into a bath room stall and assaulted her using a hammer. she faces felony sex crime, torture and mayhem. today a judge ordered doctors to assess thermental competency. -- her mental comp tense. crews finished removing a wrecked fishing boat on ocean beach. the 37-foot boat ran aground monday. it does not look like there was a major fuel spill. there is no sign of the 51-year- old, he radioed he was jumping over boards with a life jacket.

the chp says no arrest has been made in an accident that killed a highway worker. investigators are still looking into what may have caused the driver to swerve hitting the crew, including the possibility of dui or a medical condition. the 24-year-old was killed in the accident tuesday. another worker suffered major injuries. some members of congress put their vacation on hold this afternoon and held an emergency hearing on the deadly ebola outbreak in west africa. ktvu's justin gray was that hearing where the cdc talked about what it will take to control the virus and whether experimental drugs should be used. >> he told congress that stopping the ebola outbreak won't be quick and easy. he says within two weeks we will have more ebola cases than in all previous outbreaks combined. >> reporter: we know what to

new information after vandals hit a school. police say they have arrested three juveniles responsible for arson and vandalism at taft school on bay road. they identified the suspects on surveillance video and collected evidence that connects them to the crimes. the suspects sprayed graffiti and set fires on august 3. police say the boys are 14, 15 and 16. and all are from redwood city. program that will speed up training for doctors.

we continue to stay on top of breaking news. a big rig crashed and that is causing a big problem there on interstate 80. news chopper 2 is giving us a live look. zooming in closer on the scene. you can see the truck flipped ov. wheels up -- over. wheeled up. you see a number of chp and other rescue crews. the accident happened at 4:30 p.m. result the connector to southbound 680 is shut down. here is a map showing you the location. eastbound 80, jumping on to

680, that connector is closed. that situation could still be closed for another 45 minutes at least. we are trying to get in contact with chp to get more information. it is a very serious accident. as soon as we get new information we will bring it to you. search and rescue and smat respond -- hazmat responded to a call about a woman stuck in a man hole. two firefighters were lowered into the hole after people reported hearing voices from the hole. they did hear the voices. >> they could clearly hear people talking and they could also hear cars going over. >> firefighters think the voices were coming from a homeless encampment near coyote creek. this is the second time this year they responded to a call

about tapping and voices coming from the man hole. anyone calling 911 for a ambulance in contra costa county won't go to doctors medical center. this morning the hospital stopped taking ambulance patients. ktvu's noelle walker has more on the prognosis for the future. >> reporter: like a sick patient hoping for a miracle cure doctors medical center is clinging to life. >> ghost town. er. and all over. >> reporter: this morning ambulances stopped running patients to doctors medical center emergency room. an effort to cut costs at the hospital that is $18 million in debt. after 34 years working as a surgeries assistant she is not surprised. >> you can't keep a hospital running without money. that is automatic. you know? we knew something would give. have to give. >> we are prepared for anything. >> reporter: contra costa county's director of emergency

towards the islands next 24 hours. temperatures today nice, 80s and 90s in the warm spots. tomorrow it will be like this. temperatures similar to what we had today. throughout the bay area tomorrow. fog along the coast. that fog hangs out for a bit. it will be stuck at the coast. the fog makes a bigger push into saturday and sunday. and that marks the cooling trend. once the fog gets deep enough it fills in the valleys. not tomorrow. tomorrow is a duplicate of today. tomorrow is friday. whatever you had today, you will have better air quality than today. it will be similar in terms of temperatures. tonight the fog will increase. it will push inland and the cooling trend in response to this low, it takes the fog, over the hills and on saturday and sunday temperatures are going to drop off. tomorrow temperatures upper 80s, low 90s.
