good morning. we want to show you some video from hawaii because that is where the biggest storm in more than 20 years pounding at the islands. you can see that mcdonalds windows doors, boarded up. gas stations closed. the rain pounding down. we've been tracking iselle now a tropical storm. but you can see can still do damage. and what officials are doing to protect the people that are on the island. we will get that in a moment. it is friday august 8th i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. steve, you said that storm has made landfall. >> it has. central pacific hurricane center. right near pohala. there will be incredible rainfall rates. the mountains will definitely take a lot of energy out of this. but that is all. really heavy rain. it's tough to pick it up. it's twinning to enhance here a

little bit. came in south of hilo. more toward the south coast. it finally made landfall. 60-70 miles an hour winds moving west at 7. julio is expected to go north of the islands. but right now they are teaing on the big island with iselle. there is a lot going on in the pacific. it will set up shop right off san francisco. that will enhance our -- 50s more so. fog, sun, warm. fog along the coast. here is ever brian. traffic is starting to back up on the bay bridge.

let's take a look at the bay bridge incline. i'm taking a look at the toll plaza as well. traffic is starting to back up. going now to the san mateo bridge not too bad as you approach the high-rise into foster city. traffic looking good there. westbound 580 traffic a little backed up from tracy. there was a stalled big rig but it has moved out of the way. taking a look you can see the slow and go traffic. as we go back down south. and highway 24 to the caldecott looking really good adds well pip do want to mention if you

go past the caldecott there is a vehicle blocking the off ramp there. let's go back to the desk. time is 6:02. even before iselle hit that raisiny lands, the governor signed an emergency proclamation. paul kim pers is in our newsroom. >> reporter: although iselle has been downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm it still has sustained winds of 60 miles an hour. there is a flash flood warning for the big islands.

>> there is no glum faces because we are very, very confident that all the preparedness that we've engaged in. the tractus we have gone to say we are roadway di to respond. >> forecasters predict the big island will receive 5-8 inches of rain. some flights have been delayed or canceled. and -- it's predicted to pass north of the islands on sunday or monday. as these back to back stamps have already impacted bay area travelers, four flights from sfo to hawaii were canceled yesterday. some people head together islands say they are waiting to see how bad it will get. while others say they are

making alternate plans. my aunt lives there so she is giving us upgrades. >> i'm not catching a flight back there. i canceled it. i'm going to go along with my sister to seattle. >> both oakland international and mineta report flight delays. more bankruptcies are expected later today. we have coverage on the storms online. check it at ktvu.com, facebook, and our twitter account. paul chambers ktvu channel 2 nows. >> we will go live to waikiki beach. still in the path of parts of that storm. our reporter there will tell us how things look this morning. new this morning concord police investigating a deadly late night crash that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist. alex savidge there on the scene with what police are saying

about what caused maybe caused this crash. >> reporter: police believe this motorcyclist ran the red light and slammed into a car that was coming in the opposite direction making a left hand turn. this deadly crash happened just before 11:00 last night. the man that was riding that harley was flown from his bike. now there was a 59-year-old woman that was driving the car at the time. she had only minor injuries and she cooperated with investigators. police believe the motorcycle was speeding at the time of the crash. the victim was riding with a friend of his which was on a different bike at the time. the friend decided to stop at that red light and he was not hurt. concord police spent more than five hows investigating but now this intersection is back open. alex savidge ktvu channel 2

news. this is the same intersection where two years ago a father and daughter were killed while riding their bicycles. on april 7th, 2012 police say a car was speeding down treat boulevard when it jumped on to the sidewalk, hit and killed 41- year-old solomon nuri and his daughter. it happened again. the bay area woman who has repeatedly tried to sneak on to planes, she was arrested again at an airport. >> we were keeping an eye out for her. where was she going to two? what was she going to do? the courts made arrangement for her to go to a homeless shelter and gave her references. >> security experts within o the lookout for marilyn

heartman. they watched her catch a shuttle bus to the airport yesterday and for abhor go from terminal to terminal. the police chief thinks she was scoping out security. >> i felt in my heart basted upon the experience or the things she has done in the past and the many times she's tried to circumvent security that she would try to do it here. >> heartman is being held on $10,000 bail. on wednesday a judge put her on two years probation after she pled no contest to a demeanor charge of sneaking on a plane. demands are growing far complete security review for san jose international airport. two council members are demanding a public hearing. the breaches were miss heartman and a teenager that climbed over a security fence back in april and hid inside a rear wheel of a plane that flew to

hawaii. a city committee will consider the request for that public hearing. the mercury news cited a congressional investigation that found 10,000 security breaches at u.s. airports since 2001. family and friends are holding out hope that a windsor man missing in the wilderness will be found alive. frank morris disappeared on saturday while on a hike with his church group. since then as many as a dozen trains, search, and rescue teams have been searching the area for any sign of him. friends say he is an experienced outdoors map and equipped with food and water. >> it gives me a lot of assurance that he will be found. >> the first presbyterian church is holding deally vigils for morris' safe return. morris and his wife are

welcome back. time is 6:13. new this morning the world health organization declaring the ebola outbreak in africa an international public health emergency. so far hundreds have of people have died. thousands more are sick. federal health authorities have eased safari restrictions on an experimental drug for treating ebola. a canadian drug maker has been treating that drug but because

of safety concerns it was stopped last month. yesterday a company says changes may make it available to patients. back here add home oakland police are asking for more money to continue a crack down on sex trafficking. we road along with oakland special victims unit as they rounded up women suspected of being prostitutes. opd says they conduct an operation like this at least once a week. however, most of the grant money used to pay for these operations is gone. the tarantulas have begun their annual march. every year male tarantulas come out of their dens in search of female meats. they start their trek around september or october. there could be a number of reasons they are getting an

early start. >> it could be it's cooled off after a good long hot spell it could be the drought. everything has been stressed. who knows. but they are definitely out. >> the march will last about two months if you want to catch a glimpse of the tarantulas or avoid them, if you do come across one of them, leave it alone. the critters have already -- they already have a lot to deal with including traffic and they are exposed to predators. we are still following the developing news from hawaii this morning. hawaii facing back to back storms this weekend and the second one is bigger than the first one. our reporter mike gazell is joining us. mike. >> reporter: good morning. we are starting to feel some winds picking up this morning. you can see them blowing in the trees here. it doesn't mean people are not taking this seriously. this is the mcdonalds across the street. you can see the tape on the glass trying to reenforce it. sign saying they are closed. they will reopen as conditions are more favorable. the conditions on the big island much different than this. take a look at the video from the big islands over the last several hours. there they have already seen the storm surge pick up that way. they have flash flooding, they have power outages. hilo airport is closed so you can't even get to the big island at this point if i talked to a lake tahoe man who got the last flight out. he told me he was hiking all day yesterday when he went to check into his hotel. when he and his son walked in, it was empty. there was no one at the front desk. just a sign that directed him to the local high school, the emergency shelter. so he made his way to the airport and managed to get a

i would not say it's friday light but not too bad. things are starting to back up on the bay bridge. taking a look at the toll plaza. take a look at sunol this morning. sunol grade looking pretty good. now let's take a look at the toll plaza. major backup in the cash lanes there. if you have fast track looking good. take a look at the maps now. highway 4 in the pittsburg bay point area looking good as well. as we go west of that, eastbound and westbound 80 near hercules looking pretty good. a little back up south of thother berkeley along the east shore freeway. and here the nimitz freeway looking really good this morning. a little back up on 238 slow and go in hayward. at 6:18 here is steve. thank you brian. watch the satellite image. watch how it enhances.

getting enhancement from 14,000- foot mountains. there will be torrential rain here. at the same time it will take a lot of the energy out of tropical storm iselle. radar estimates 4-5 inches of rain. you will have mud slides, you will have flood issues. there is a lot of power outages as well. the stage is set for really heavy rain. over all on the big island finally it has been confirmed 60-70 miles an hour winds moving wests at 7. hilo airport is closed. peak wind 54 miles an hour. i think you almost get some reports of really, really heavy rain coming fast. hilo is expected to go north. unless it changes. that again that would be to the north. but the forecast models have been spot on with the past.

let's give it create there. we have a lot of fog. lost in all of this there is a typhoon going into japan. it's just a different designator. different part of the world. it says i kind of like san francisco so i will park it right there for the weekend. and that will enhance the fog. it will give us a cooler pattern. there are hints it will tap into more tropical clouds next week. which will not surprise me. that has been the pattern all summer long. gusts 21 out of the south. so there is a definite breeze in place. fog, sun, warm. 60s and 70s coast and bay. if you are definitely heading to outside lands, i would bundle up. i know there will be a lot of people out there. that fog will get enhanced tonight into the weekend. and we have to watch for more

the cremated remains of nine victims at jones town have finally been found. the remains were found at a funeral home in delaware. they were marked with names and where the deaths occurred but never claimed. neighbors say they are relieved. >> mystery solved. everybody was concerned. there were a lot of different thoughts of what took place. >> more than 900 people took part in the mass suicide at jonestown. they were members of the people's temple. and they drank a poisoned drank. many of the victims were from the bay area including 412 unclaimed bodies buried at the evergreen cemetery in oakland. stock in malaysia airlines being pulled off the market. the airline had been in financial trouble before the disappearance of a jet last march and last month another jet was shot down over ukraine. the majority owner of the airliner plans to buy out other shareholders. that would make malaysia airlines fully owned by the state.

the new air traffic control our tower at san francisco international airport is getting second looks. this new control tower look at it. 220 feet tall. has a better view of the airfield than the current tower. airport officials say the tower is one of the most advanced in the world. it can survive a magnitude 8 earthquake. and work on sfo two shortest runways that is done. this video you are looking at from other airport shows how they look like run away truck ramps on a freeway. but the runway extensions are made of a softer than normal concrete. 6:26 is the time right now. strong winds and heavy rain had people running for coverage. a look at the damage caused by tropical storm that is slamming into the big island of hawaii.

let's take a look at the maps. livermore valley not looking too bad. there was an earlier big rig that had been pulled to the side because it had stalled. that has since moved. traffic stop and go as you approach the livermore valley. here's dave. new this morning police is saying speed was a big factor in a deadly motorcycle crash last night in concord. alex savidge is joining us live on tree boulevard with more. people say that intersection you are standing at is very dangerous alex. >> it is. good morning to you. police believe the motorcyclist was at fault here. he ran a red light late last night and plowed right into a car that was coming in the

opposite direction making a left hand turn. it happened shortly before 11:00 last night at treat boulevard and oak grove road. the man riding a motorcycle a harley was thrown from his bike during the accident and died at the scene. there was a woman driving that car and she had only minor injuries and she did cooperate with investigators. police believe the motorcycle was speeding at the time of the crash. now the victim was riding with a friend at the time it was on a different motorcycle. that motorcyclist decided to stop at the red light and they were not hurt. concord police have not cleared that accident scene. we are live in concord alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >> that is the same intersection where two years ago a father and daughter were killed while riding their bicycles. on april 7th, 2012 police say a car was speeding down treat

boulevard when a car jumped on to the sidewalk hit and killed solomon nuri and his nine-year- old daughter. that teenage driver was sentenced to seven years in prison for vehicular manslaughter. developing news now on the back to back storms hitting hawaii. the latest radar images take a look there of tropical storm iselle. right there. just as expected on the big island there. coming right about at hilo. iselle has stoned winds -- has sustained winds close to 60 miles an hour. close behind that is the hurricane julio. as steve has been mentioning, it sounds like it will go north. it is predicted to reach hawaii sunday or monday. now even before iselle hit. hawaii's governor signed an emergency proclamation. they believe they are prepared for anything that may happen. paul chambers is tracking the

storms. >> reporter: the impact of the first storm was a little weaker than expected. now these are new pigtures into the newsroom from over night. we got these from social media sites. it shows rain in the area and also people lined up heading to evacuation haves and shelters. right now wind and rain are pounding parts of hawaii. iselle was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm but it still has sustained winds of 60 miles an hour and there is a flash flood warning for the big island for another two hours or so. right now the center of iselle is hitting the big island about 40 mimes south of hilo and it's being reported 24,000 people are currently without power. >> i want to emphasize to everybody now that they should stay alert. that they should be confident that we are ready. and that they should be

grandchild. police say on wednesday afternoon the grandmother was cooking when two gunmen burst in through an unlocked door. she was at work when she got a frantic phone call from her mother where she rushed home, found her mother on the ground with duct tape around her mouth. her young daughter was not hurt. >> she started hyper ventilating and she couldn't breathe and she started saying i'm sick. >> two men stole several purses jewelry and a small amount of cash. the family tells ktvu they were burglarized once before on new years eve back in 2012 and they are wondering if the same people did this one. police say both suspects are asian men between 30-35 years old. both wore white shirts with baseball caps. they also had a small steel colored handgun. if you have information about this, call fremont police.

trying to keep police officers from leaving a police force and now a 20 year veteran says he is leaving and go to another city. the tipping point came this week after council members failed to put two tax initiatives. one of them solely for public safety on the november ballot. they also failed to soften measure b. he calls it the worst pension system in the state. >> we took this professional police department that had a reputation of being one of the best in the nation and our leadership that the city has dismantled that department. >> it's an odd thing to blame since the current employees are not at all effected by the pension reforms that we put in place. >> at its peek there were 1200 police officers on the force. now there are 900. police officers association blames controversial 2012 plan for the shortage. mayor chuck reed says while he hates to see them go it's

income families in the south bay they are excited about the start of the new school year because they are getting some special help. ktvu janine de la vega is live in san jose where kids are getting ready to do some back to school shopping for school supplies, thanks to the generosity of a local community. >> reporter: as you can see behind me all of these colorful backpacks that were donated. the kids will be getting these and they will be filled with these school supplies that you see over here at this table. for one child, all of this can add up to $75 which is nearly a full days pay for a minimum wage worker. now the need is still great that parents lined up with their children in the early morning hours last month to make sure they get on the registration list to receive a backpack. sacred heart was able to collect enough donations to supply 2800 kids with

backpacks. a recent stanford study shows the achievement gap between high and low income families have widened by roughly 40% in the last three decades and educational success is tied to economic success. the charity says it wants to help give under privileged kids a leg up. >> you want them thinking about what they are learning that day. learning the teachers names and following the rules. >> reporter: and i do want to show you again here is what the kids will receive inside the backpack. you can see there is some colored markers, glue sticks, pencils for the older kids. there is the calculator. all sorts of stuff. they will also be getting each family will get a gift card so the kids can get new shoes. it is too late to come over here if you need a backpack to receive one because you had to

sign up earlier. those parents that did sign up everybody will be arriving here at 9:00 a.m. and kids will get to shop. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. the city of richmond is launching a scholarship program to help every eligible high school student quo two to college. it's called the richmond promise. the city will use $35 million that chevron is giving the city for community investment to set up the program. city councilman says taking away financial concerns could make more families think about sending their children to college. the class of 2016 will be the first to benefit from that program. the fighting in gaza has resumed as a three-day cease fire ends. tower cameras show smoke from a rocket fired by israel. they resume their air strikes after hamas fired 18 rockets at israel. so far there is no word of any

injuries. the fighting started after negotiations failed to extend the truce that expired at 10:00 pacific time last night. we also just found out the pentagon says two u.s. fighter jets dropped bombs in iraq on islamic militants. the pentagon says the jets dropped 500-pound womans on a piece of artillery and the truck that was towing it. last night during a tv broadcast, president obama approved targeted military strikes against isis militants who are a threat to americans. it's part of an effort to protect hundreds of military advisors working with iraqi security forces. president obama also said u.s. aircraft carried out humanitarian air drops to tens of thousands of refugees who have fled those militants. they are stranded right now in the mountain. they have no food, water or shelter. the isis militants have been

two minutes. ly take you around the pacific. we have a cooler pattern on tap for us. we have a couple days. let's talk about tropical storm iselle. made landfall near pohala. it is definitely enhancing on the radar. the wednesday about toy -- about 60 miles an hour. it will take a lot of energy out of this. there will be a lot of rainfall coming down. it looks like it will weaken considerably. the big island taking the brunt of this. 60 and 70 moving west. they had peak gust at 54 miles an hour. category three hurricane. julio is expected to go north. everything says it is going north. that did exactly what we thought it would. and the track for julio will stay well to the north. it will impact only waves or

shipping interests. now japan you have a tie toon. typhoon is along heading right toward osaka. that will move in there. there is also another super typhoon. this is category five. just out in the middle of the pacific. and then that is iselle. and there is julio. and this is where our cooling trend is coming from. one there and one there and one there. one of them will come right toward us. that will enhance the fog and sit there until next week and tap into tropical moisture. the fog will be increasing tonight. we will get drizzle. that will give us a cooling trend into the weekend. highs today in the 50s and 60s. and then 80s inland. it will be warm inland but not as warm as yesterday. highs in the 80s to a few low 90s. a lot of 60s and 70s closer to the water. if you head to outside lands i would take a jacket it does not look warm to us. we will be talking about more tropical clouds and tropical

showers. yahoo working to make its e- mail more secure. it will work with google to encrypt all e-mails sent in to its networks. no one can read the messages. not even google or yahoo. they do promise to have the encryption in place before the end of next year. zynga is making a play for sports fans. they have signed a deal with tiger woods for a golf game. it will be available on multiple platforms next year. zynga has also signed a deal with the national football league and the players association for a series of games. the first game will be called nfl show down. players build their rosters with real stars from the nfl. i guess a dream team. more concerns about the spread of the deadly ebola virus with the world health organization just did this morning because of the growing ebola crisis. >> just hours from now steps of thousands of people will converge on golden gate park

his girlfriend on valentines day of last year after firing shots into his bathroom saying he thought it was an intruder in there. today lawyers wrapped up five months of testimony and arguments. new this morning stanford university police are investigating a case of sexual battery near the university. officers say last night a woman reported a man groped here near stanford avenue and ramundo way. they describe the man as white in his mid 20s about 6'3" with a mid build. he was wearing a light blue shirt with jeans. he also has a tattoo with writing on his right arm and he was walking with a gray pit bull. anyone with information is asked to call police. the state assembly has passed the so-called kill switch bill. now this bill requires that all cell phones sold in california be preequipped with technology to make the phone useless if
