winning actor. >> and tonight we mourn the loss of robin williams found dead at the age of 63. good evening. i am heather holmes. >> and i am frank somerville. the sheriff's department confirmed this afternoon that robin williams' body was founds inside his home earlier today. ktvu's allie rasmus is live now in the news room with what we know tonight after his shocking death. >> reporter: the sheriff's office isn't revealing a lot of information about the circumstances surrounding his death right now but a source close to the investigation tells me the 63-year-old was found hanged in the home he shared with his wife. investigators were called to the home around noon responding to a call about a man not breathing. robin williams was pronounced dead. he had roots in the bay area. he went to redwood high school and studied at the college of marine and lived in san

francisco for many years where he made surprise appearances at comedy clubs. we found this interview from the 1990s where he talked about why he loved living in san francisco. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> it is a human game preserve. when you walk by a midget nun you don't feel less strange. you walk down the street in san francisco and go, i am all right. him. >> robin williams was one of the incredible characters that make up the city. he was probably one of the best known that makes up this city. because this city is a city of creating risk taking, innovators who lived larger than life. >> reporter: one of robin williams' most famous fills, mrs. doubtfire, you see it there, was shot in the bay area. parts of it was shot here at the ktvu studios. many staffers here at ktvu recall seeing robin williams come to the station every morning. robin williams became famous for mork and mindy in 1970s but later he took on more serious roles. he won an award for good will hunting and nominated for good morning vietnam. tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. the sheriff's department will have a news conference to talk

about the investigation into robin williams' death. robin williams found dead of a suicide in his home. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. and his wife susan schneider released a statement, this morning i lost my husband and best friend while the world lost one of its beloved artists and beautiful human beings. it is hope the focus will not be on his death but on the moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions. >> i remember watching mrs. doubtfire here. it was fascinating. he would get here before 5:00 a.m. to have make up put on and then you would see him walking around in the studio with boy's clothes on and a woman's head. shot 10 feet from where i am sitting. he was a fisher in san francisco. a city he loved and loved to

make fun of and we have cecil williams on the phone. one thing about robin williams, he was a guy who really cared. >> very much so. he was a man of great generosity. a man who was a genius. a soulful person, a man who gave much more than he received. he was really quite a human being for us and for everybody. there is no doubt about it. >> he helped you celebrate a big milestone. >> yes, he did. he appeared on numerous occasions at fundraisers and he appealed at many events that occurred. he was close to us and we were close to him. in fact, i could tell you something, i have got something that is really great. and that is, he signed some t- shirts and caps and said to us

not too lodge ago -- long ago take these and use them. we will put them up and say look what he left us, something still to raise funds. he was just a greatperson. and he -- great person and he reached out to people. you know, in recovery, people would come around, they would all be in a sense soul brothers. they touched each other because they understood what it was like to be in recovery, so that recovery was very significant. and he gave evidence of standing with people, not against them but with people. i remember going back stage on several occasions to greet him and to say what a great artist he is. i remember him finding ways to touch the lives of people. little people. he loved children.

little people. he was a man who gave himself. a man who stood tall and he never gave up. he wanted to make this world a better place to live and he was a genius. >> thank you for sharing your thoughts about hollywood star robin williams. a man who may have been a star but also remembered his roots and always willing to help others. thank you. robin williams had close ties to the bay area comedy and movie scene. and people at the film commission say they are devastated by his loss. he was responsible for making sure movies were made in san francisco. not just in hollywood. >> well, in the '90s he shot every film he had done in that time in san francisco. we had mrs. doubtfire, a

portion of 9 months, flubber, jack, bicentennial man. he kept the film industry going in san francisco. >> actors call his death a shocking loss. >> a lot of people are remembering robin williams on social media. including fellow actors and actresses. jason alexander, i am sorry the earth couldn't stay worthy of you. hope happiness awaits you. sesame street, we mourn the loss of our friend robin williams who always made us laugh and smile. another one, rest in peace robin williams. his genius will be missed and his support of our troops was much appreciated. and one more from marylou henner. she says i am in shock. i had never seen him happier

and more positive in all the years i have known him. there was no one like him. rest in peace. outside of the studio, there is a scene in mrs. doubtfire where he is on the telephone in a bath tub, they filmed the scene here. they put up fake walls and that is how they filmed that scene outside the studio here. >> robin williams was raised in the mid-west but spent much of his adult life in the bay area. born in chicago and raised in michigan. they moved to the bay area. he was one of 20 people accepted at julie art in 1973. his first mage was in 1978 producing one child. he married again in 1989 and two more children. that marriage ended in divorce.

1997 he won an academy award for good will hunting. 2000 it 11 he married -- 2011 he married susan schneider. robin williams had a long love affair with san francisco. here is a look at a unique moment. >> robin williams feels more comfortable talking to someone from the bay area. i have always thought the interviews i get from him are different from those who gives to others. >> free willy, what is that? free willy. police say one of their own fired the bullets that killed a woman. the police made the announcement today calling the shooting unavoidable. reports show misty holt-singh was struck about 10 times. misty holt-singh was taken hostage on july 16 during a robbery at a bank. police say one of the suspects used her as a human shield after a police chase came to an end. misty holt-singh behind a husband and two children. new at 6:00 p.m. new information about the fire conditions faced by a crew. 8 people including three firefighters suffered first and second degree burns. ktvu's claudine wong with more on one report that is talking about what happened when the

target and it appears to have stemmed from a argument. the mall remained open. the victim does not have life threatening injuries. they are hoping the victim might have information that could lead to the shooter. shoppers usually feel safe but are worried about someone opening fire in a busy public place. >> you would expect that when coming to the mall people would know how to behave themselves. >> i am still going to come here. i don't believe in being scared to go outside. this is always going to happen infinitely. >> reporter: mall management hasn't commented on the shooting or to say if there are security changes. police are looking for a black male, he was last seen with another black male and two

white women and police are hoping the victim might give them information on the identity of the gun man. ken wayne, ktvu channel 2 news. new at 6:00 p.m. a dog shot in the spine and now the search is on for the person responsible. the dog left paralyzed and there was no choice but to euthanize the animal. >> cristina rendon learned a reward is now being offered. >> reporter: we are talking about a $1,000 reward. staff members here at had humane society -- at the humane society picked up the dog and brought it back on august 1 but it didn't have a chance to live. >> reporter: with so many pets needing a good home it is heart breaking for the humane society to hear a dog had to be put down after being shot and paralyzed and it is more concerning to residents who

lived in the neighborhood. >> sad. i don't see how anybody would do something like that. >> reporter: a brown male was hut by a bullet or high powered pellet gun. >> very shocked. why would somebody shoot a little dog. >> reporter: residents here called the shelter when they saw the dog unable to walk and in pain in front of their house. >> usually quiet. to hear someone shot a dog is alarming and makes me feel like they are willing to do that to an animal what are they willing willing to do to a person? >> reporter: the humane society says the dog had to be euthanized. >> the dog would never have sensation in his back legs. that led to our decision. >> she is holding her dog
