and certainly by his neighbors. flowers and an ornamental heart. >> we love you, robin. >> reporter: this from neighbor gregory, so emotional he had few words. >> i know him from new york. we lost a great man. >> reporter: robin williams was last seen last night at 10:00. the sheriff's department responded to a 911 call at noon. he was found dead. a media contention grew as a solemn day went on. >> it's almost like a family member that dies. very sad. >> he was really, very, very kind, and always willing to say hi. >> reporter: the sheriff's department says an

investigation is underway into the cause, manner, and circumstances of his death. but the coroner's division suspects his death to be suicide due to asphyxia. sources tell ktvu, the 63-year- old actor hanged himself. over the years williams battled substance abuse. his agent says he suffered from depression. a picture of a man difficult to take in for neighbors who saw him routinely. >> he was such a sweet man, and such a talent. we loved him as an actor, but as a person, he was such a great neighbor. he looked like he was happy. he was content. we didn't see that other side of him, that might have been depressed. >> i'm just in shock that he is gone. because he was always so, so up and so friendly, and so, just robin. >> reporter: the sheriff's department says it released more information than it typically would in a case like

this, because of mr. williams' public status, but the sheriff's department will hold a press conference tomorrow morning. ken pritchett, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> robin williams' family released a statement today. his wife, susan schneider said this morning i lost my husband and best friend, while the world lost one of the most beloved artistsk and beautiful human beings. she went ton to say, it is our hope that the focus will not be on robin as death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter that he gave millions. >> he was born in chicago, but the bay area was home to robin williams. he went to redwood high in larkspur and later studies theater at the college of marin. he lived in san francisco for many years. as an avid cyclist, he might have been spotted pedaling up geary boulevard to his home. he told bob why he chose to

actor in san francisco who takes on the persona of a scottish nanny, mrs. doubtfire so he can be closer to his children. in a movie, he worked at a television station, and ktvu was where they shot some of those scenes. some of those scenes were filmed in the exact same studio we're in right now. >> it's more than the bay, it's an estuariy, wake up. and i think they liked the studio. >> it earned robin williams a golden globe for best actor in a comedy. he was reportedly planning to reprize his role in a sequel. >> people are gathering to pay their respects at the hollywood walk of fame. williams was inducted into the walk of fame in 1990.

the city has been undergoing a $3.2 million makeover. crews have been converting old streetlights to these l.e.d. bulbs. >> the light is brighterk and people feel much more safer when there's less darkness. >> reporter: the new lights are supposed to last for up to 12 years longer and use up to 85% less energy than the old ones. >> the expectation is we'll not only get a better light source, but save about $400,000 a year. >> we have a pole directly across the street, and there hasn't been a light in there for how long? >> about a year and a half. >> reporter: they say they'll be happy if the city would just come by and repair their current light. but if the replacement bulb is too late -- >> i would rather not have a light there than have a light that is so bright i can't sleep at night. >> reporter: the city says they have received complaints and will address it. >> there is a complaint, and

seeing if there is ways it can be resolved. >> reporter: one of the options, to add shields to the light. they expect to have the project complete in the next two months. live in berkely, paul chambers, ktvu news. there was an emotional vigil from san francisco's bay view neighborhood, where two men died in a shooting last night. the gathering took place near the scene of the crime at la salle avenue and cashmere street. all the lives that gun violence has claimed. >> and there's nothing that we see that i see that's really being done to help eradicate this problem. >> the victims were riding off- road motorcycles when the shooting started. neighbors say they were young men with jobs who were just blowing off some steam on the weekend. oakland leaders say they were awarded a $2 million state

grant to fund crime prevention. reentry programs for those who have recently been released from prison. police chief sean whent wants to pay for some of the money to look for leads between cases. oakland's crime leaders are following with reports of robberies down 40% compared to last year, homicides down 16%. richmond chief sent out a tweet in which he questioned why richmond came up empty handed. he said oakland received a $2 million grant to fight crime. why does richmond get nothing? where are our advocates? at least one person was hit when an argument at bay fair mall in san leandro ended in violence. >> broad daylight just before lunch on a monday, and then the

baby girl just 1-day-old who was ready to be discharged. the hospital went into a code pink saturday morning, after the father tried to take his newborn from the mother and baby unit. >> he did not get far in the room. all the elevators and stairwells are immediately secured when there is a code pink. >> reporter: dawn says the man carried his baby down the hallway from the mother's room, and was trying to walk out the doors, which lead to the elevators. but he set off alarms after passing through two security areas, indicated by red lines on the ground. >> we absolutely knew by his demeanor and his body movements that he was in fact looking to take the baby, and looking to take the baby out of the facility. >> reporter: tonight, the hospital showed us the tiny security band and electronic device outfitted on babies after birth. signs are posted, designating areas not to be crossed with an

stations. tonight, eric rasmussen explains what is being done to make sure the customers are getting what they pay for. >> reporter: with gas prices still hovering around $4 a gallon in the bay area. >> it's too damn high! >> reporter: there are plenty of people who feel just like adolf bolmes. >> can i say it's too damn high? >> i think you can. >> then it's too damn high. >> reporter: he's not alone. 2 investigates compiled a list of 257 gas station complaints in the last year and a half, based on information obtained from all nine bay area counties through the california public records act. on this day, veteran san mateo inspector, bob swanson is checking out a station in bellmont thought he pumped less gas than what he paid for. it measures the amount of fuel down to a cubic inch. >> they're actually getting the

full five gallons, plus an additional three cubic informations. so actually got a little tiny bit more than what he was paying for. >> reporter: not so at this eel el camino in millbrae. >> the pump is shut off, but the meter still keeps going, right? and it doesn't go quickly, it creeps. >> reporter: in this case, inspectors say they crept 25 to 30 cents. the station owner said the problem was corrected and the customer got his money back. inspectioners say they rarely find a gas station that has intentionally manipulated pumps. >> most of these aren't sinister, manipulative plots. far and away, it's an issue with the pump itself. >> reporter: first, make sure the amount is correct. then try pumping a gallon of

stanford's first football game is august 30 against uc davis. but it's already holding two a day practice sessions as they try to three-peat as pac-12 champions. the cardinal finished 11-3 last year, but lost to michigan state in the rose bowl. this year, kevin hogan starts his third season, a little bigger, a little stronger. he even ran an off-season program. >> at least two days a week. getting out here a couple of hours. sometimes on weekends. each guy has things they'll need to work on. half the stuff i need to work on. so this has probably been the most competitive camp since i've been here. did you notice ever since he broke off his engagement to his fiance, rory mcilroy has been playing lights out golf. he also showed some great athletic moves at the trophy ceremony.
