family who rushed to the city. surveillance video of the attack shows a white male wearing a great sweat shirt. >> how could you do that to somebody that never hurt anybody. never took anything from anybody. >> reporter: san francisco general hospital confirmed bryan higgins was removed from life support and died at 3:33 p.m. this afternoon. that shifted the case from an attempted murder investigation to a homicide case. at 6:00 p.m. the search for a motive and the frustration friends feel about the investigation. david s, ktvu channel 2 news -- david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. new information on the bay area woman who managed to get on to a flight from san jose to los angeles without a ticket. a judge sentenced her to 177 days in jail. nearly six months for violating

probation. she pleaded no contest to stowing away on the southwest jet from san jose to los angeles. the next day she tried to get on another plane. she was arrested a number of times trying to sneak on to flights at sfo. the incident is now the focus of an investigation. the san jose city counsel rules committee voted to schedule a hearing on security. a 16-year-old boy flew to hawaii in the wheel well of a jet. some argue the city needs to take action. >> we need to increase the san jose police department presence at the airport and the fire department and take the necessary steps to secure the perimeters and staff will take care of that. >> the airport's director says she will provide information on

the security budget, more back ground on the breaches and spell out the responsibilities of various airport employees. that security hearing is scheduled for september 25. we are getting word in the past hour about new developments in a high profile case in martinez. attorneys were brought back to court after the jury asked for instructions. he is facing 116 counts of lewd acts on children for molesting 14 of his former students. his attorney says he was told the jury reached a decision on the charges related to three students and undecided to the other 11 students. the jury must be unanimous to convict him. if the jury is hung on some charges the district attorney

could decide to retry the case. a man shot and killed a woman and then kidnapped another woman during his escape. a case that gripped the community. >> i have got more calls and e- mails on this issue than i have in the six years i have been on the counsel. >> police say on august 1 he fired his gun at another vehicle. it was in retaliation against another man. infinitely a stray bullet hit and killed a 19-year-old. he then kidnapped his ex- girlfriend who was with him at the time of the shooting. last night the counsel voted to increase the reward to $2,500. >> the money is there for the citizens. when there is a person out there for a murder we need to make sure we find him. >> the chief of police has a

request to governor jerry brown to boost the reward more but there is no word if the quest will be grand -- request will be granted. investigators hope the reward will help. the family of the woman is desperate to find her and they said he has abused her in the past. oakland police made a plea for information about a deadly hit-and-run hit-and-run crash that happened on april 26. witnesses say the driver of an suv that hit a 68-year-old stopped, got out and looked and drove off. police say that suv had extensive damage. >> body shop will recall working on a white suv, audi or infinity with front end damage. >> there is a $10,000 reward

building over the weekend. administrators say the rain backed up the city sewer and a basement flood as well. the water luckily did not reach patient areas. flooding is hitting other parts of the country. record rainfall and commuters in new york were stopped in their tracks. >> reporter: a series of storms that aren't connecting but they are producing the same result. flooding. among hardest hit, michigan. the governor says the clean up could take a long time. >> this was a record rain in a short amount of time. we are having more rain. part of the concern is if we have more rain it makes it more difficult and we could have more problems. >> it is raining a lot. cars are stuck. cars are totaled. destroyed. you know, this will effect the area. >> reporter: another storm

causing flooding up and down the east coast. new york 13 inches of rain and cars became stranded. much of the new york area remaining under a flood watch. things weren't better in north carolina, flooding, downed trees and power outages and in maryland flash flooding. baltimore residents never seen it this bad. >> the water was up to the third step of the house. 40 miles per hour. washing down the front of the house, backyard. >> for normal rainfall this is crazy. not even like a hurricane. >> reporter: roads were flooded in arizona an a storm rolled through the area on tuesday night. in new york, fox news. amtrak is trying to figure out if shots were fired at a train that was traveling near the richmond station. ktvu channel 2 news viewer sent us these pictures of the train.

complete bay area news coverage continues right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00 p.m. new information in a brutal stabbing. the man you see here is accused of killing his step-father and injuring his mother on their wedding anniversary. today we learned new details about how the attack began and when the suspect made his first court appearance today. ktvu's ann rubin is live now with more on the crime and the role mental illness may have

played. >> reporter: authorities say a 22-year-old had a history of mental health problems and run- ins with the law. this time the situation escalated. >> reporter: though this was his first court appearance for murdter was not his first time behind bars. his mother told police he has been in and out of jail. . >> mental health is a factor in the case. the significance into what extent it means to the case remains to be seen. >> this case began august 9 on what should have been a happy day at the san jose home. they were celebrating their 6 6th wedding anniversary but instead they found he was missing. they tracked him down at the light rail station. >> they drug him into the car and he became agitated and it turned deadly. >> reporter: his mother had

gone to make him food. his step-father went to bed. that is when it happened. >> when the defendant grabbed the kitchen knife and found his step-dad in the bedroom and stabbed him the mom heard the commotion from down stairs and came up and tried to intervene but it was too late. >> the mom suffered a cut to the hand but got the knife away. he later died from his injuries. authorities say he was under the care of doctors and on medication to treat his mental health. he is now held without bail. he is set to enter a plea september 17. though he has another court day for a petty theft case tomorrow. live in san jose, ann rubin, ktvu channel 2 news. a man who says he followed carjackers demands ended up getting shot despite the fact

he cooperated. it happened after 4:00 a.m. this morning near 19th avenue in san francisco. the victim was getting out of his car when a man approached him and demanded his wallet and keys. he complied but he still shot him. some residents are voicing concerns about plans for new construction near the san bruno pipeline explosion. they are working to ensure it is safe but some say the construction noise is stiggerring post traumatic stress systems. -- triggering post traumatic stress systems. >> flash backs. i know inside it is embed in him and if he has a choice he will choose to move out. >> residents are concerned about a plan to build new homes in the neighborhood and the

afternoon. ktvu's david stevenson is in san francisco where friends and family joined together as he was taken off of life support. david? >> reporter: frank, bryan higgins was taken off life support and died this afternoon as hundreds of strangers and friends attended a vigil in his honor at this san francisco park. the investigation focuses on whether they can find the suspect in the case. they have surveillance video and the investigation has gone from attempted murder to homicide. the vinylal was organize -- the vigil was organized and drew 200 people. >> i didn't know the young man but i just felt it was important to come here and show our unity. >> reporter: unity after 31- year-old bryan higgins was found badly beaten sunday morning. he was taken off life support this afternoon by his family who thanked friends and strangers for their support. >> very, very, very
