now at noon, breaking news out of san jose where police are investigating an officer- involved shooting. shocking new details about robin williams as his widow reveals the comedian and actor was in the early stages of parkinson's disease. plus, president obama's statement today on the situation in ferguson, missouri as bay area activists plan to show their support for the teen shot and killed by police there. ktvu channel 2 news starts right now with breaking news. >> good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. we begin with breaking news out

of san jose where a police officer has shot and wounded a person. it happened on blossom hill road in playa del ray. that's where ann ruben is standing by. ann, what happened? >> reporter: well, we just arrived on the scene a short time ago. the media staging area where we are is a couple of blocks from the scene. i want you to take a look down blossom hill. there is a lot of police activity. that's where the shooting apparently occurred. we're told by officers right in the middle of the street on blossom hill just east of playa del ray. the call came out just before 11:00. what we're told is a woman threatening to shoot her family. when police arrived -- we don't know the details yet -- but when police arrived, they shot and at least injured that woman. she was shot at least once. we were told she was armed. we're not sure what type of weapon yet. we also don't know the

condition of that woman at this time. we do know she was shot at least once. officers are processing the scene. in fact, within the last few minutes, we saw the homicide unit arrive there. they are apparently taking over this investigation. we're expecting the police public information officer to make her way down to our location in the next few minutes to give us an update. right now we're told that one person, a woman, was shot at least once time, injured and right now, we're also told that no police officers were injured in that incident. we hope to have more details on this in the next few minutes and hope to bring them to you as soon as that more information becomes available. for now, live in san jose, ann ruben, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, ann. a and we have breaking news on the death of actor robin williams. within the last half-hour, williams's widow disclosed that her late husband was in the early stages of parkinson's

disease. the iconic actor and comedian hanged himself at his tiburon home on monday. susan schneider just released the following statement -- it reads "robin's sobriety was intact and he was brave as he struggled with his own battles of depression, anxiety as well as early stages of parkinson's disease which he was not yet ready to share publicly. it's our hope in the wake of robin's tragic passing that others will find the strength to seek the care and support they need to treat whatever battles they are facing so they may feel less afraid." today, president obama broke away from his vacation to publicly speak about the escalating violence in ferguson, missouri for the first time. protesters and police have clashed since an officer shot and african-american teenager over the weekend. ktvu's kyla campbell is live in washington with the president's reaction to the violence and what his administration is doing right now. kyla? >> reporter: tori, president

obama said emotions are raw but it's time for everybody to step back and stop the violence. >> there is never an excuse for violence against police or for those who would use this tragedy as a cover for vandalism or looting. there's also no excuse for police to use excessive force against peaceful protests. >> reporter: police used flash bangs and tear gas and arrested protesters for flowing molotov cocktails. protests are escalating daily since 18-year-old michael brown was shot and killed this weekend. he was not armed. police say brown wrestled with a cop and tried to take his gun. eyewitnesses say brown had his hands in the air when a white officer fired the deadly shots. president obama said the justice department and fbi are investigating. >> i made clear to the attorney general that we should do what is necessary to help determine exactly what happened and to see that justice is done.

>> reporter: president obama said he asked attorney general eric holder to work with local officials in ferguson and report back to him in the coming days. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, kyla. and at 4:00 today, two local gatherings are planned in response to the situation in ferguson, missouri. people are scheduled to gather at oakland's frank ogawa plaza and san francisco's civic center plaza to remember 18- year-old michael brown. we will have updates on the vigil during the newscast at 5:00 p.m. for the latest follow us on twitter and facebook. a fremont couple experienced some frightening moments as they were held at gunpoint while this home was robbed. this is -- their home was robbed. this is the third home invasion in two weeks in a city that rarely experiences them. janine de la vega is live from fremont where you just spoke with police about this crime wave. >> reporter: yes. i did. and out of these three home invasions, there's been one

arrest but in addition there's been a rise in residential burglaries. police say they are prioritizing these cases and they want to catch these thieves. the latest home invasion occurred tuesday morning at about 4:00 a.m. in an affluent neighborhood in the hills above mission san jose. police say two men broke into the home and held a couple at gunpoint and stole valuables and financial information. the home had an alarm system but it wasn't on. police are looking at surveillance video that 345eu help them track down the suspects. last week on the other side of the city, two men broke into a home and duct taped a grandmother's head while they robbed the police. police don't believe the home invasions are not connected because the suspect descriptions don't match. >> we hope that this doesn't continue but at this point from the last two we are desperately seeking information from the public if anybody has any information that may help us lead to these suspects.

we are increasing the number of detectives working these cases. we want our residents to be assured that we are allocating the necessary resources. >> reporter: police say so far this year, they've had four home invasions. and usually that's what they experienced in one year. this activity is unusual. while they have experienced an uptick in residential burglaries in the last two weeks, overall, they are down by 18% compared to last year. police are not sure if the suspects in the home invasions are also responsible to those crimes as well. they want to remind residents not to be intimidated to call 911. if you see something suspicious, to call them. they also recommend that people alarm their homes while they are there and if you can, they also recommend getting security cameras. they are very valuable as far as evidence for the police department. reporting live from fremont, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. a man accused of killing his wife at their home in

oakland's montclair neighborhood is scheduled to face a judge today. 53-year-old joseph von tempo will be charged with murder. police say he climbed his wife died after slipping on the stairs of their home last month. but prosecutors say an autopsy showed von tempo's wife, lori wolf, died from injuries that could mott have been caused by a -- could not have been caused by a fall. he's being held without bail. palo alto police arrested these two. police say the victim knew one of the suspects, 20-year-old logan of palo alto. she's accused of attacking the man sunday outside his home on taso street. police say he repeatly punched and beat the victim with a metal flashlight. but the victim fought back and was able to get the flark light and hit the suspect. the second suspect then came to his aid and helped him into their getaway car.

a hayward family frapped by smoke still managed to escape a house fire with the help of the youngest family member. the 9 and a half-year old strung into action. katie utehs explains how she kept her cool. >> reporter: hayward firefighters train for hours and hours but apparently this 9- year-old has. she reads firefighter books and -- >> at school they showed me. >> reporter: she put her knowledge to work around 7:00 when smoky fire in their her family's home trapped six people. >> it burned our eyes. >> reporter: the alarm sounded at the house along park arroyo place but the adults didn't react. >> ii quickly got a towel and wet it. my dad tried to go downstairs

but there was too much smoke. so we climbed out of the window. >> reporter: the neighbor watched as a nearby construction crew rushed to help the family stuck on the roof. >> they gave us a ladder and we kim down. >> reporter: firefighters say the amount of stuff inside this home really hindered their efforts. you can see it's spilling out of the house. if you take a look at the garage, it's jam packed. it slowed the response for firefighters to get into the house and also fuel to the fire. in about a half an hour, firefighters put out the flame which may have started in the kitchen. the family not go back in the house. the young girl returns to school as a hero. >> if it weren't for her, it would have been worse. >> reporter: katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. tonight is the final event at the stick. if you don't have a ticket and thought you were out of luck, you will want to hear the

president obama today said that u.s. military efforts have broken the siege held by

islamic militants on iraq's mountain. the united nations has set up a carm for those who have escaped the mountain where they were trapped for days. u.s. forces carried out airdrops for food and hurt and they helped the civilians escape. the president gave an update from the situation and said the efforts helped save many innocent lives. >> because these efforts, we do not expect there to be an additional operation to evacuate people off the mountain and it's unlikely that we're gonna need to continue humanitarian airdrops on the mountain. >> the president said that the u.s. will continue air strikes to protect u.s. facilities in iraq. the president also called on iraqis to come together to defeat the islamic insurgents. right now, pope francis is in south korea. he arrived this morning and met with the bishops of korea. he surprised many by his choice of transportation, leaving the airport in a compact black kia.

he's received wide coverage in south korea. this is the first time a pope has visited the asian nation in 25 years. the chp now says alcohol was likely a factor in a deadly crash on highway 101 in santa rosa early this morning. it happened around 1:30 when an suv veered off the highway, hit a guardrail and slammed into a tree. the driver who has been identified as 32-year-old ben putnam of healdsburg was 3r0e nounsed dead at the -- pronounced dead at the scene. several lanes are back open after being closed for two hours. in san francisco, 2 investigates has uncovered major problems with parking tickets going to the wrong person. drivers from all around the state tell us they've received notices saying they owed money for a violation that was not theirs. some people had never even visited san francisco and they say when they tried to contact the city or the collections agency, getting the error corrected was next to

impossible. >> i finally reached someone. they said no, i'm sorry. you owe the money. no matter how much i said, i don't own the car, i didn't own the car. they said you have to send us some sort of proof you don't own the car. they were completely inflexible. >> today at 5:00, the city reaction the problem and why it says the collection notices are not exactly what they see. teachers are making plans for a possible strike. the big issue is money. teachers want a 21% pay raise over three years. but the school district is only offering 8.5%. tonight, teachers will vote on whether to authorize a strike. the next immediate eighth session is scheduled for september 2nd. the fremont unified school district is shelfing a controversial health and sex education textbook. the school board voted to use last year's text bool in high school freshman health classes. they plan to send the newer books in the hope it can be

modified. many parents say the book's diagrams and explicit descriptions are inappropriate for high school students. >> just because there's accurate information this this book does not -- in this book does not mean it's good or healthy information for our 13 and 14-year-old children. >> the school board says the old health book will not be sent home with students because it contains outdated and inaccurate information. if the new book can be modified it will not be ready for students until next semester. happening now, final preparations are underway ahead of tonight's final event at candlestick park. sir paul mccartney will take the stage. he's promising fans a one-of-a- kind show. we just learned the stage was pushed back four feet which will allow 200 more seats for the concert. >> it will be a very emotional night. gonna be a great night. we're gonna rock. i have some very special memories, as you know.

>> that was the message mcpartny posted to his website. it's been 35 years since the beatles held their concert here. the stick will be going out with a huge fireworks show lighting up the sky. >> there's lot of specials going on and a lot of special video and we're trying to make the event, you know, really memorable. >> now, in addition to those 200 new seats just added, you can buy tickets on some secondary sites but some prices are more than 11,000. public transit is recommended but if you want to drive, the parking lot is set to open at 3:00, it costs about 40 bucks to park. the show begins at 8:00 and then in the coming months, the landmark stadium is set to be demolished. and candlestick park will live up to the reputation with with the cool conditions and

breezy conditions. right now, looking out towards san francisco bay, mostly clear skies here. still some patchy low clouds hovering parts of the bay and parts of the shore line as well. but shaping up to be a nice thursday afternoon. as you can see on the satellite, most of the significant cloud cover is to the best of the bay area, we still have a few patches hanging out near parts of the shore line, especially closer to the marin hedlunds out towards half moon bay. the northern perspective, we have partly cloudy skies. current numbers right now, it's san jose that's 76 degrees. livermore, 81. santa rosa checking in 71 degrees. and san francisco 62. for tonight, partly cloudy skies. tomorrow's -- for today, partly cloudy. tomorrow morning fog clearing back to the coast. no pig changes. we'll stick with this weather pattern through the weekend with no major temperature changes. forecast for tonight at candlestick park, temperatures will be in the upper 50s. a bit of a breeze out there as you would expect out towards

candlestick park. winds around 15 to 25 miles an hour. temperatures in the upper 50s to near 60. for today, patchy coastal fog beginning to break up. a lot of sunshine inland. and a bit of a breeze, approaching 25 miles an hour. this weather system has been up to the north. it f this will scoot out of town. temperatures have been trending up a little bit over the past few days. we'll kind of stick with that pattern. but basically stalling ut or maxing out today into friday and saturday. but inland neighborhoods back up into the mid- to upper 80s. here is our forecast model. we'll put this into motion. it does thicken up the cloud cover. there's the expected fog. even a few patches into the bay up into parts of the north bay. clearing back to near the coastline for the afternoon hours. forecast highs for this afternoon, you can see santa rosa 82 degrees. san francisco, 69. some more neighborhoods with san jose 81. san mateo, 76 degrees. here is a look ahead to your five-day forecast, the

back now to breaking news in san jose where a police officer has shot and wounded a woman. ktvu's ann ruben is on the scene near blossom hill road and playa del ray where it happened and joins us live. ann? >> reporter: we're actually a couple of blocks from the shooting scene at a media staging area where we're waiting for an update that we're expecting any minute now. but i want to show you newschopper2 is overhead right now and can give you a closer look at the scene itself. now, we're told that there was a home on one side of the street that the shooting may have happened in the street itself and that there may be some sort of a weapon down on the ground there. there appear to be witnesses that police are talking to on the opposite side of the street. it's quite a large scene -- we have blossom hill blocked off from end to end. this is what we know about the investigation. police responded to blossom hill in plaza del ray for reports of a woman threatening to shoot her family. this happened about 10:36 a.m.

we're told the woman did have a weapon of some kind. officers apparently felt threatened. said they were forced to shoot the woman at least once. no word on her condition. we're told no officers were injured. right now, homicide detectives have arrived and are taking over the investigation. we hope to have much more information as soon as we're briefed by the public information officer from the police department and, of course, we'll have all of the information coming up at 5:00 p.m. for now, live in san jose, ann ruben, ktvu channel 2 news. stocks are modestly higher on wall street. the most expensive u.s. stock just got pricier. class a shares of the hathaway company have topped $200,000 for the first time. the dow is up 55. the nasdaq is up 15. and the s&p is 7. dozens of school children in east palo alto were treated to special gifts today to help them start the school year on the right foot.

excited students received a new pair of shoes along with school supplies. the bay area nonprofit new red shoes held the giveaway at cesar chavez keamd. caregivers are grateful for the help and the young students were thrilled. >> i'm retired. i'm raising my grandchildren. whatever help i can get, it's important. >> very happy. >> why? >> because i got new shoes and a new backpack and a new book. >> in addition to the new shoes and school supplies, families also received gift cards for school uniforms. new music from the king of pop. a new michael jackson video has launched on twitter. ♪ >> the video for a place with no name is from jackson's "escape" album.
