fighting. >> joseph martin remains in custody and due back in court on september 8. we should know by then if the district attorney has decided to retry him. a man accused of killing his wife stood before a judge today on murder charnels. ktvu's cristina rendon spoke to neighbors where the man told police that his wife fell down the stairs. >> reporter: well, 4 hours ago he went before the judge here at this courthouse and his attorney said his client is innocent and heartbroken over the loss of his wife but the neighborhood is in shock over this death and also about his arrest. >> this is a peaceful neighborhood. this could have been an accident. >> shocking. >> reporter: questions about a woman's death surround this home. it is where she died on july 6.

her husband told police she slipped down stairs in their home but two days ago he was arrested. neighbors are in disbelief. >> they are peaceful. something like this doesn't happen. >> reporter: they determined she died from blunt force trauma that was not consistent with a fall. the case is now a homicide but neighbors say they don't believe he could hurt his wife. >> she grieved over -- he is grieved over what happened. >> reporter: after a brief appearance in court he attorney told me he is innocent. >> a tragic loss for my client who lost his wife, his partner of 20 years. a loss for everyone who knew and loved her and he intend to fight this case. >> reporter: the community tried to quiet rumors the death was suspicious and they hope

the shooting in missouri. hundreds of people gathered outside city hall today to remember michael brown. demonstrators say they are holding a vigil for all those who have been killed by police in the bay area and in san francisco 100 people gathered, many holding up their arms during a moment of violence. demonstrators wanted to stand in solidarity against the shooting in ferguson, missouri but all acts of what they describe as excessive police force. the event was part of a national moment of silence to honor victims. here is a live look at new york where protesters are filing into the streets there in response to the situation in ferguson, missouri. this protest has been building in the past hour or so. we will keep watching it. there is new information about robin williams' health before he died. his wife says he had been

diagnosed with parkinson's disease. the news came in a statement she released today that thanked fans for their love and support. ktvu's mike mibach is in san francisco with the diagnose that surprised a lot of people today. >> reporter: robin williams kept that parkinson's disease diagnose very quis. >> reporter: susan schneider released a -- quiet. >> reporter: susan schneider released a statement. saying he was brave as he struggled with depression, anxiety and early stages of parkinson's disease which he was not yet ready to share publicly. he has known robin williams for 38 years. when they last performed together in may he said robin williams said nothing about having parkinson's disease and he seemed relaxed. >> he had no problem following me. he was calmer. that is the thing i have been

san jose police officer shot a woman who appeared to be holding a weapon and threatening her family. it happened at 10:30 a.m. this morning. police say they received a report of a woman inside the house with a uzi but investigators haven't confirmed what type of weapon, if any, she was carrying. wins heard police yell -- witness heard police yell four times to drop the gun. one piece of evidence looked like a power drill. new at 6:00 p.m. b.a.r.t. is facing a problem tonight. the system is aging but not just the tracks and trains, also the employees.
