i'm mike mibach. >> let's look at the weather and send it to rosemary. a pleasant start after we get through the fog and low clouds. it's back into the valleys this morning. north bay into the south bay. the inner east bay, it's enjoying sunshine, but in san francisco and along the coast we're socked in close. the marine layer it's right around here, not a lot of change going on. we'll see mostly sunny skies for the second half of the morning and into the afternoon. it's partly cloudy to mostly cloudy day along the coast when it comes to daily city and half moon bay and pacifica. it's a lot like what we had yesterday. it could strengthen a tad this afternoon. some will be similar to yesterday some of us a tad warmer, some a tad cooler. 61 in oakland, 50 in napa, this is one of the only spots i'm seeing this morning that is

cooler than where we started yesterday, most of us similar to how we started the day, 79 freemont, upper 80s to near 90 degrees, antioch checking it at 09 for the second half. this will be the warmest day, we'll begin in the minor cool down. i'll have a look at the extended forecast coming up. a two-year-old girl has been killed in a hit-and-run accident in san francisco. it happened at 10:37 last night on mission street between fourth and fifth streets. this shows the vehicle police are looking for. it's a white mid-90s four-door sedan. it could be a camry honda or lexus. the driver hit the girl when she was walking in the crosswalk with a family member. they're asking anyone with information or anyone who sees this vehicle to call 911. from ferguson, missouri they're clashing with police with the deadly shooting of an

unarmed teenager and businesses are caught right in the middle. late night demonstrations in ferguson turned into looting over the objections of protestors. they broke into this convenience store that have been boarded up. to withstand the tear gas police were firing to disperse the crowd. in the east bay several businesses will need to clean up. looters broke away from protests and vandalized several stores in oakland as well as in berkeley. >> reporter: some of the damage has already been cleaned up this morning. but, if you take a look out here here is some of the damage that's left over at this hour. this is a bakery on telegraph. two people were arrested in the east bay last night after a protest here took a violent

turn. >> this is a local demonstration in oakland, they're protesting the police shooting in ferguson last night. it went all the way to berkeley, several hundred people took part. >> several hundred stores were vandalized. we saw graffiti along the walls in oakland. windows were smashed in the bank of the west downtown. they've been boarded up. this bakery and coffee shop that was vandalized. some smashed windows here, the business does appear to be on its way to opening this morning, we are seeing some workers in the back, the lights on, some of the pays industries in the cases this, and we're hoping to once they do open here talk to some of the folks here about the fallout and damage they experience as a result of last night's protest. we're live in oakland, ktvu, channel 2 news. happening today a protest is being held against the

with the district attorneys office. the murder charges were dropped in exchange for gun and assault charges. they'll serve between 5 to 9 years in prison. a former oakland high school security guard accused of beating a student in a wheelchair is ordered to stand trial. they show is surveillance video of the incident. michelle is charged with inflicting injury to a child. he suffers from cerebral palsy. he may have been refused or slow in complying with mitchell's orders to go to class. they arrested a mother for leaving her children alone in a car. a store clerk came outside and saw the car and heard the engine running. after taking a look inside, he saw two kids, ages one and thee and that's when he called

police. >> the children were in the car crying, it was running, the car was unlocked. and the children were basically left unattended. a similar incident happened last month in livermore when police arrested an oakland woman for leaving her two and though-year-old children inside a locked car. the first transgendered police recruit is now a officers officially. she graduated in the academy with three other recruits. 35-year-old o'connell is the oldest graduate and the first male to female transgender graduate. she knows what it means and the pressure it has. >> you can't screw up. i know people will be watching me, i cannot let the transgendered community being let down.

five people living in santa clara county have been diagnosed with the west nile virus. they are the first human case to be reported in the south bay this year. two of the people showed no symptoms and two got the neuro invasive form of the disease. in recent years they've seen a big increase in the number of dead birds testing positive for the virus. 648 birds have died from west nile. new this morning with the start of the school year, they're urging high school students to seek higher education. >> we know whether you go to a community college, a four-year college or a professional training program, some education is a ticket to the middle class. a well educated work force is vital to improving the nation's economy. they've worked hard to reform the student loan system. he adds that a typical american

. four people are safe after being rescued from the side of a cliff. they set out at a hike in a area known as pirates cove. they could not go any further, they were stuck. and a cal fire helicopter helped those hikers to safety. a dog was rescued after being there in a treatment plant. he was stuck in a vault, and they were able to hoist the dog out. the dog was taken to the county animal shelter for treatment. the dog was not wearing a collar had he was found and they're searching for the dog's owner. a massive wildfire that injured three county firefighters should be under

control. it burned 12,000 acres. it's 70% contained. while the conditions are still warm and dry they believe they've got the upper hand on the fire. the controversy continues for a number of paul mccartney fans who missed the concert at candlestick because of traffic jams. he delayed the start of the show because of the traffic in gridlock. fans say the event overall was just disorganized. >> the parking attendants that came to my car said they are turning away thousands of people. >> this person waited in traffic for three hours before being turned around. several people are requesting a refund from ticket master. there's no word about those complaints. it's back to school time

let's send it over to rosemary for a check on the forecast. it's a gray start. we have a beautiful afternoon in store. first we have to get through this overcast. we'll look at the bay bridge and into san francisco where you can barely see the skyline this morning. the marine area depth is similar to yesterday. we'll have a similar burn off for your afternoon. delay is reported at sfo because of the cloud and fog. it's 63 in hayward. 52 in nevada, it's partly to mostly cloudy in san jose. as we get into 9 to 10:00, this will peel back. but, as i advance us into the afternoon it's hugging the coast to coast through the the day. we have 60s around the coast, 80s for the inland community, a

bay area. several businesses were vandalized in connection to a ferguson protest. >> they took part in that local demonstration last night. in the wake of this morning, there is damage to local businesses, you can see it right here. now, demonstrators here in the east bay protesting the shooting in ferguson last week. the march started in oakland and went all the way to berkeley. several stores along telegraph avenue were vanlized. we saw graffiti in many of the walls in oakland. some expressed anger towards police. windows were smashed up and had to be boarded up. windows were smashed at the taste afterdenmark bakery. the business isn't scheduled to open until 8:00 a.m., they're getting ready to open as scheduled. we talked to the owner to his reaction to the vanned him. he said it's really small

impersonating the tsa agent. they've not been found without victims to testify, there is no case. california's job market held steady last month. the unemployment rate was 7.4% and that's the same it was in june. educational and health services recorded the biggest increase in new jobs. the largest decline came in construction which reported 6400 fewer jobs in july. the bay area is doing better than the rest of the state in the job front. they had the lowest of any county in the state of july. the highest job less rate is salerno county and that is less than the statewide average at 7.4%. some homeowners who fly the american flag have received anonymous letters to take the

bay. i'll give you a snapshot, let's look at the satellite view and let's see for yourself. peninsula, coast, and get into areas like concord and antioch, all of these are waking up with sunshine this morning. we have a ridge of high pressure to the east of us. it will be strengthening and that will lead to a minor warmup for some. we have a trough off the coastline and that's keeping the onshore breeze going. it may be stronger this afternoon than yesterday afternoon. it could be a tad cooler. all in all only minor changes in store for today. i want to take you to the sierra. what a fabulous weekend it will be in tahoe. low to mid-70s in the forecast, mostly sunny skies. i point this out because rounds and rounds of thunderstorms have been moving over the sierra, for the past month or so, not this week, a good looking dry weekend in store.

we begin a cooling trend as early as tomorrow. i'll have a look at those numbers for you, coming up. from ferguson, missouri to the bay area, protesters are clashing with police over the deadly shooting of an unarmed teenager. this morning, some businesses are caught right in the middle. >> late night demonstrations in ferguson, missouri turned to looting, despite the fact that some protesters tried to stop the looting, some people broke into a convenience store that had already been boarded up. protesters were wearing gas masks to withstand the tear gas police were firing in an attempt to disperse the crowd. here in the bay area, some businesses have a major cleanup ahead of themselves. stores and banks in berkeley and oakland were vandalized, some with graffiti. others had windows smashed. ktvu's cara lui is live in oakland, where this morning she's been talking to merchants about the damage to their businesses. >> reporter: well, one of the businesses that was damaged last night was this bakery near

34th and telegraph. we just saw a few minutes ago workers putting up a sheet of cardboard behind this broken window to reinforce it, but it was smashed by vandals overnight and will need to be replaced. demonstrators here in the east bay, several hundred of them, marched from downtown oakland to berkeley, protesting the police shooting in ferguson last week. several stores along telegraph were hit by vandalism. we saw graffiti along the walls of numerous businesses in oakland, windows at the bank of the west in downtown smashed and had to be boarded up. windows also smashed at the taste of denmark bakery here at 34th and telegraph. the owner, while decorating a cake, tells us he was disappointed when he discovered the damage this morning. he says the vandalism takes away from the message protesters were trying to send. >> i understand that they are upset about what's going on and i am, too. that's the part that frustrates me. i don't think that they realize how it affects the other people

because it's like we almost look at it as, what, do you think we did this? we're the ones that shot this poor kid? we didn't have anything to do with it. we're hundreds of miles away. >> reporter: davis estimates the damage here will cost him about 600 or $700 in repairs. live in oakland, cara lui, ktvu channel 2news. a young child is dead after being hit by a car in oakland yesterday afternoon. police say it happened around 3:30 on olive street near a park. she died at the hospital. there are reports that the child was a 2-year-old girl and that the driver of the car stopped and is cooperating with police. police have not confirmed and say they are still investigating. a 2-year-old girl has been struck and killed in a hit and run accident in san francisco. it happened 10:35 last night on mission street between fourth and fifth street. this picture shows the vehicle police are currently looking for. it is a white mid-'90s four-

door sedan. it could be a camry, honda or lexus. police say the driver hit the girl when she was walking in the crosswalk with a family member. they are asking anyone with information or anyone who sees this vehicle to call 911. a violent attack on a muni bus was caught on tape back on august 6th. a chinese woman was sitting on the number 9 bus in the visitacion valley neighborhood when a teenage boy tried to grab her purse. but because it was strapped across her chest, he dragged her off the bus to pull the purse away. the 39-year-old victim said she was traumatized and still has cuts and bruises on her knees. she agreed to talk to us on the condition we do not identify her. >> so scared. very scared. just thinking. >> even though there were other passengers who witnessed the attack, she says no one came to her help. she is having trouble sleeping and no longer takes public

transit. police urged passengers, if possible, avoid sitting near exit doors. the strong arm robbers have targeted asian women, grabbing their cell phones and making for a quick getaway. happening today, a protest is being held against the sonoma county sheriffs deputy who shot and killed 13-year-old andy lopez. deputy eric gel house is set to return to full duty next week. he was placed on paid administrative leave after last october's deadly shooting. police say lopez was holding a pellet gun that gelhouse thought it was an assault rifle. last month, prosecuters announced she would not file any criminal charges against gelhouse. today's protest is set to begin at 1:00 at the sonoma county sheriff's office. there's also a large demonstration planned for this afternoon at the port of oakland against an israeli cargo ship. the port of oakland has been the site of numerous protests over the years. one of the largest was this one by the occupy movement three years ago that effectively shut the port down. around 3:00 today, demonstrators plan to march

from the west oakland bart station to the port to demand more palestinian rights in gaza. there are new ramifications from the ebola virus in africa. some stands selling fruits and vegetables have been shut down in the countries of sierra leone and liberia. the price of rice and other foods have sky rocketed in areas now under quarantine. ebola has killed more than 1000 people in west africa and has forced the united nations to plan food convoys for up to a million malnourished people. the world health organization warned this week the outbreak could last for several months and that its size may be vastly underestimated. five people living in santa clara county have been diagnosed with the west nile virus. they are the first human cases to be reported in the south bay this year. two of the people never showed any symptoms. one had west nile fever and two others developed the severe neuro invasive form of the disease. vector control officials say in recent years they have seen a big increase in the number of dead birds testing positive for

the virus. so far this year, 648 birds have died from west nile. four men accused of killing a german tourist in san francisco back in 2010 have pleaded guilty to lesser charges. a 50-year-old woman was hit by a stray bullet while walking with her husband. she was caught in a gun battle between rival gangs. the san francisco chronicle reports the men reached plea agreements with the district attorney's office. the murder charges were dropped in exchange for guilty pleas on gun and assault charges. the men will each serve between five and nine years in state prison. a former oakland high school security guard accused of beating a student in a wheelchair has been ordered to stand trial. prosecution is expected to show this surveillance video of the may 19th incident. 23-year-old marshall mitchell is expected of punching freshman student francisco martinez, knocking him off his

wheelchair and later handcuffing him. martinez suffers from cerebral palsy. officials say he may have refused or was slow in complying with mitchell's orders to go to class. livermore police say they arrested a mother for leaving her children alone in a car. it happened tuesday in a safeway parking lot. police say a store clerk came outside and saw a car and heard the engine running. at first, he thought there were animals inside, but after taking a closer look, he saw two kids, ages 1 and 3. that's when he called police. >> the children were in the car, crying. it was running. the car was unlocked. and the children were basically left unattended. >> a similar incident happened last month. livermore police arrested an oakland woman for leaving her 2 and 3-year-old children inside a locked car. the first transgender police recruit at san francisco's police academy is now officially an officer. mckayla colonel graduated from the academy last night with 32 other recruits. she is the oldest graduate in

to keep the raiders in oakland, but owner mark davis says he believes the team would be well received back in los angeles, its home for a dozen years, 20 years ago. even magic johnson is pulling for a return. their lease expires this year. the nfl floated the idea of using the santa clara stadium, but owner mark davis is not on board. as student athletes prepare to head back to school, there are major changes in store for high school and middle school football programs. a new state law aimed at preventing concussions among student athletes is set to kickoff in a few months. however, it is already on the minds of coaches this season. the bill, ab 2127 limits the number of full-contact football practices to just two a week during the season and they can only be 90 minutes long. head football coach at sarah high says he supports the idea and has already implemented changes to his practices. >> concussion awareness has changed. the medical side of the game

more than someone with just a high school diploma. the san francisco zoo is collecting backpacks for bay area kids in need and also giving out gifts to people who donate. the first 500 people who donate a new or gently used backpack will receive a limited edition set of zoo folders. the folders features gillian, ten sink and aaron. to help get young minds ready for the classroom, educational exhibits have been added as well. the zoo will collect backpacks today and tomorrow. meanwhile, the monument crisis center will give out backpacks beginning at 9:00 this morning at the center on market street. kids will be able to pick out their own backpacks, fully stocked with all the supplies they will need for school. the family-friendly event will also include a free breakfast, nutrition tips and face painting. an aspiring rapper in washington, dc is taking his positive message from the stage into the classroom. ♪

. a massive wildfire in mendocino county injured three santa clara firefighters. it should timely be under control next week. the lodge lightning fire started last week, burned more than 12,000 acres. right now, it is 70% contained. while conditions remain warm and dry, calfire thinks it has gained the upper hand on the fire. more than 1500 firefighters have been called to help stop the flames from spreading. and a dog is recovering after being rescued from a sewage water treatment plant in

north richmond. firefighters say a worker spotted the dog stuck in a vault around 10:30 yesterday morning. they were able to hoist the dog out with the wire harness and some ropes. the dog was taken to the county animal shelter in martinez for treatment. animal services says the dog was not wearing a collar when it was found and they are still searching for the dog's owner. california might be known for its wine, but it looks like it has a little competition. according to the american wine consumer coalition, new hampshire is the best state in the country to be a wine drinker. that's because it has the most lenient laws and easiest access to wine, but despite being called the best in the nation, the wine coalition said new hampshire is still tied for first place, with six other states including california. the worst states for wine drinkers are mainly in the south and midwest. lake tahoe area property has sold for $1.6 million in bitcoin. a virtual and controversial online currency has been around

brown has filtered to the bay area, as protests turn to looting overnight in ferguson, missouri. several stores in berkeley and oakland were vandalized in connection with the local ferguson protest here. ktvu's cara lui is live in oakland this morning, where business owners are taking a look at some of the damage. >> reporter: well, this bakery here in oakland was one of the businesses hit by vandals last night. in just the last hour, we saw workers put up a sheet of cardboard behind it to reinforce the smashed window until they can get it replaced. demonstrators here in the east bay marched from downtown oakland to berkeley last night, protesting the police shooting in ferguson last week. a number of stores along telegraph were vandalized. there was graffiti on the walls. some of it, critical of police. windows at the bank of the west downtown were smashed and had to be boarded up. here at the taste of denmark bakery at 34th and telegraph, a large window was smashed. the owner, while he was decorating a cake, told us he

was disappointed by the damage, especially considering local businesses here had nothing to do with what was happening in ferguson. >> the sad part about it is the majority of the people that came up the street are neighbors and friends of ours and whatnot, and it's a few bad apples that come in from the outside and just because they want to protest, they want to get in and think this is a great time to cause a lot of damage and do looting and everything else. and the sad part is that it ruins a good protest. >> davis estimates the damage here will cost him about 600 or $700 in repairs. live in oakland, cara lui, ktvu channel 2news. law enforcement in ferguson, missouri and st. louis county have been accused of excessive force. some of their weapons and vehicles come from a program that supplies decommissioned military gear to local police departments, including here in the bay area. the redwood city police department showed us its new 30- ton armored personnel carrier. celine nas received one of

those bomb-proof vehicles last year, while south san francisco just got one a month ago. the san francisco police department recently received more than 200 night vision goggles and armor. alameda county got a grenade launcher. >> we needed a vehicle that could match the type of threats that law enforcement is seeing coming in across the nation. >> if you've got it, the temptation is to use it. police raids get more violent. what might have been a visit from a couple of officers turns into a s.w.a.t. team raid, turns into a show of mass military force. >> a congressman plans to introduce a bill that would end the military's transfer of weapons and equipment to local law enforcement agencies. a woman who was stabbed repeatedly on an ac transit bus for no apparent reason is talking about what happened to her. the attack happened monday in berkeley near san pablo avenue. the woman says she was on the bus when the man pulled out a knife and started to stab her. she was stabbed in her right eye, right arm, and left leg,

but survived, thanks to a passenger who hit her attacker with a skateboard. >> i just thought i was going to die. i thought it was over. i thought my life was coming to an end. >> the suspect, 25-year-old eric palmer, is charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. palmer's father told us his son has battling with mental health challenges since the age of three. he says his son was recently homeless and off his medication. >> there were many times that i had him institutionalized and they would only hold him for a week, maybe a month and just let him go. >> the woman is expected to fully recover from her injuries. palmer is being held without bail. a concord man has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in connection with a dui crash that killed a mother and her 1- year-old daughter. police say 24-year-old her arrest doe harken had twice the

legal limit when his car crossed lines. the woman and her child were-- >> mr. harken was charged with murder because he a prior dui conviction within the last 10 years. as a result of that, he was warned. >> harken will be back in court on december 15 for preliminary hearing. a 40-year-old woman faces charges after police say she stole a taxi in martinez and drove the wrong way onto highway 4. a video posted on youtube shows the orange taxi driving east in the westbound lanes. the chp says the driver caused two accidents when cars swerved out of the way to avoid hitting the taxi. investigators say the keys were inside the taxi at marina market on escobar treat yesterday morning when elam got inside and drove off. chp says drugs are believed to be a factor in the incident. after a week-long man must not, police in southern california have arrested a mixed martial arts fighter accused of brutally beating his

ex-girlfriend in las vegas. he was arrested in a motel in simi valley yesterday afternoon. he is an mma fighter and had been on the run since his ex- girlfriend christie mack accused him of assault on august 8. witnesses say they heard a lot of noise when police entered his apartment. >> went in there, screaming, like open the door! open the door! it's the police! they couldn't get it open and finally when they got it open and i heard them shot the guy and tase him. >> he is awaiting treax addition to nevada. no charges will be filed against a man who posed as a tsa agent and gave a fake screening to two women. 50-year-old eric slaten was arrested july 25. he took the two women aside in order to privately screen them. well, yesterday, the district attorney for san mateo county said there is no law against impersonating a tsa agent. he also said the two women

involved have not been found and without victims to testify, there is no case. kaiser says its richmond emergency department has been overwhelmed ever since doctors medical center in san pablo stopped accepting ambulances. doctors medical center started redirecting ambulances to other emergency rooms last week because of staffing and money problems. kaiser says all of the extra ambulances being sent to its richmond hospital campus threatened to compromise patient care. the contra costa times reports about 21 ambulances per day that normally would have gone to doctors medical center, are now being sent to other hospitals. san bruno city leaders are planning to attend a federal court hearing on monday in connection to the city's 2010 pipeline explosion and fire. pg&e is expected to enter a plea for revised felony criminal charges stemming from the incident, which killed eight people and injured more than 60 others. about 38 homes were also destroyed. pg&e says the charges are not warranted and says although mistakes were made, its

employees were acting in good faith. california's job market held steady last month. according to new state numbers, the unemployment rate was 7.4% in july, the same as it was in june. educational and health services reported the biggest increase in jobs, adding nearly 11,000 positions. the largest decline came in construction, which reported 6400 fewer jobs in july. the bay area is doing better than the rest of the state on the job front. marin county had the lowest jobless rate of any county in the state in july, at 4.4%. the highest jobless rate in the bay area is solano county at 7.2%. that is still less than the statewide average, that is at 7.4%. revenue is down at the great resort and casino in rohnert park. the casino recorded $88.9 million in the second quarter, down 12% from its first quarter results. profit from the casino's 3000 slot machines is also falling short. that money is supposed to fund

quarterly payments to the city of rohnert park. some homeowners who fly the american flag have received anonymous letters telling them to take their flag down. dean morris has hung an american flag outside his home for the past 40 years. three days ago he received an anonymous letter, suggesting that people who display flags are trying to make a conservative statement and that the flag should only fly on important holidays. morris, who served in the army, says flying the flag and sending that letter are all part of free speech. >> i lost a great number of friends in the vietnam conflict and, you know, it's a tribute to them. >> morris says he spoke to a number of his neighbors who also display the american flag and they, too, received the same letter. he pointed out that ironically, those letters were sent with a stamp bearing the image of the american flag. one woman is on a mission to bring some patriotism to every state in the nation. ♪ o, say can you see!

. there are several new developments this morning regarding the iraqi conflict. american air strikes hit an area around iraq's largest dam in an effort to drive out isis militants. they swept into a northern village yesterday, reportedly killing at least 80 men and taking more than 100 women captive. refugee centers have also been overwhelmed by people seeking safety this week, but with the announcement that iraq's prime minister is stepping down, there's hope that the sectarian

violence will lessen. the prime minister had been accused of dividing the country and inflaming tensions. there's controversy surrounding the pope's visit to south korea. this morning, he led a ceremony in front of an estimated 800,000 people in seoul, south korea, honoring korean martyrs killed for their religion. experts on the chinese church say the travel van was likely the work of overzealous communist party bureaucrats. the central government in beijing has remained silent about the issue. republican texan governor rick perry will issue a statement at noon pacific time about the indictment against him. a grand jury in austin indicted him on two counts of abuse of power. the governor is accused of trying to coerce a democratic district attorney to resign by threatening to veto funding to her office. there is speculation that perry may run again for president.

he will be booked on charges next week. if convicted, perry faces up to 99 years in prison. one of the governor's attorneys predicts perry will be cleared. starting this weekend through labor day, law enforcement agencies will be out in full force looking for drunk drivers. it's part of a nation-wide effort to save lives. several dui check points and saturation patrols are planned across the bay area. in 2012, there were more than 20,000 people killed in drunk driving crashes in the u.s. over the labor day weekend last year, 147 people lost their lives to drunk drivers nationwide. well, today, nearly 20 people will shave their heads to raise money for childhood cancer research. rails salon in santa rosa will host the st. baldrick's head shaving event to raise money for childhood cancer research. the event starts at 5:00 p.m. and ends at 9:00. well, the 49ers were busy this week, practicing for tomorrow's game. the team also had fun with the als ice bucket challenge.

. an army specialist from the bay area is back home with his family. [ cheers & applause ] >> army specialist jeremy scott of martinez was greeted by friends and family when he arrived at sfo yesterday morning. specialist scott served in eastern afghanistan, providing security at an american army base. the chp officers in the bay area and in sacramento are now equipped with something special in their patrol cars. officers are now toting teddy bears. they plan on giving the stuffed animals to children who have been in an accident or similar frightening incident. a 6-year-old boy from alamo came up with the idea. he and his dad organized a donation drive and collected 1300 bears for the cause. people heading to hawaii from san francisco will soon have the option of taking a nonstop flight to maui. starting november 20th, hawaiian airlines will add a nonstop connection to maui's airport. the new service will start with
