started showing up hours ago trying to get in early for a little tailgating. officers telling me they've been out here 2:00 this morning saying fans already showing up that early. today's preseason match-up, 49ers against the denver broncos. fans told me this morning they're ready for football and looking forward to getting a close-up look at the new levi stadium. >> i'm looking forward to it. i've been a season ticket older for like 21 years. i grew up in that area. so i remember when they built that. so to come down for this change here, i had to be apart of it. >> one of the big issues as always with any big event like this, parking. we saw major parking, a big traffic mess for the san jose quakes game two weeks ago. but state officials say than been working to try to

smooth out the kinks for fans today. there's more officers out here other help people get in and out of the stadium. you can see some of the officers already starting to direct traffic out here. gates open at 9:00 so we're expecting a rush of people the next hour or so. tailgaters tellling me they want to get out here early and kick-off set this afternoon. we're live at levi stadium in santa clara. >> there a plaenlt of -- plenty of activities around the game. the first red zone valley pregame event at the 18,000-square-foot great america pavilion. attractions include the 49ers cheerleaders, the gold rush girls, and a chance to ride the flight deck coaster.

live special, levi stadium, all access pass. at 1 p.m., 49ers against the chargers. you can watch it right here on channel 2. a man is in critical condition after he was shot in ferguson, missouri just hours after a midnight curfew went in to effect. >> this is the police department. you're violating the curfew. >> at 12:45 a.m. central time, police fired teargas to disperse the crowd that had been protesting the deadly shooting of michael brown. it looked like the teargas and falling rain seemed to thin out the crowd. a short time later someone opened fire. a man was struck by gunfire and is now in critical condition. >> we brought out the tactical unit. they got out on the street. they looked at the binoculars. someone in the middle of the street was holding a handgun. >> someone also shot at a police car but no officers were

hurt. a total of seven people were arrested. al sharpton will hold a rally in missouri today with michael brown's parents. the family has hired a famous pathology to conduct a second autopsy on brown's body. that pathologist worked on oj simpson's case and phil specter. people were pepper-sprayed friday night. oakland police add one of its officers was also assaulted when he tried to make an arrest. the officer was treated and released. several businesses in oakland are tallying up the costs of friday night's demonstrations. windows were broken, guff eaty win on the wall. police arrested two people there, a 45-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting an officer and a 41-year-old hayward man on suspicion of obstructing police. one person is dead and

another hospitalized after a small plane went down last night while heading to the swansboro airport. the aircraft was circling the airport before it went down. one man died at the scene. the other was transported to sutter roseville medical center. their identities have not been released. we have learned the plane was registered to richard neland of san jose. the woman who made headlines for repeatedly trying to sneak onboard airlines is out of jail. 62-year-old marilyn jean hartman was released because of jail overcrowding. on wednesday a judge ordered hartman to serve 177 days in jail for violating probation by returning to los angeles international. previously hartman pled no contest to sneaking on to a southwest airlines flight from san jose to los angeles. a judge released her and told her to stay away from the airport if she didn't have a ticket. the next day she

was arrested at l.a.x. san francisco's police chief is asking for help to find the hit-and-run driver who killed a girl. it happened outside the westfield shopping center about 10:00 friday night. mianna and her mom were in the crosswalk when they were hit. >> two sergeants responded, attempted cpr. you can imagine how they're feeling. just awful. >> police are looking for a car captured on video from a nearby surveillance camera. it's a light colored model camera or lexus with a mismatched bumper and dark or black rims. >> i can almost assure you somebody watching knows this car. please come forward. >> police are reviewing the incident to see whether the car ran a red light. even if it didn't, police say as soon as that driver of the car fled the scene, he or she broke the law. a 16-year-old boy is being

treated for severe burns to his face, chest, and neck after a mixture of gunpowder and magnesium exploded near him in marin county. the boy's father says they were using the mixture to break up concrete fence posts on the side of their house. they said they couldn't get the gunpowder to light so he increased the amount then lit a hand flare which his son was holding. that flare set off the explosion. a new report says a shortage of associate police officers means a lot of veteran detectives are back to routine patrols instead of working on special units. resources have been redirected to make up for the shortage and many officers are forced to work overtime. according to the san jose mercury news, police say there aren't enough investigators to fully staff special units like vice, electronic crimes and financial crimes. there were 1400 officers in 2008. and now there are just about 900. alameda county's district

attorney wants to clear the backlog of untested rape kits. the county is pushing to streamline the way sexual assault evidence is processed. he's hoping alameda county can become a model for the way rape kits are handled nationwide. 2,000 rape kits remain untested. congressman wants to speed up testing by certifying private crime labs to process dna tests. gay rights activists in the south bay say the name has changed but the commitment remains the same. today is the festival formerly called san jose pride. today's festival is at discovery meadow in san jose. organizers say this year's theme is honoring our past, securing our future. it's the largest lgbt event in the south bay. animal countries around the country will be banding together

to protest the sale of rabbit meat in whole foods market. protesters scheduled here at the bay area at the palo alto store on emerson street and the campbell store. some people are upset that the rabbit meat comes from the same breed of pet rabbits. headed back to patrol, a sheriff's deputy's new assignment leads to a rally and protest in the north bay. the reason they want that deputy put on another assignment. >> first, police in san diego are left chasing one of their own patrol cars. who was behind the wheel of that vehicle and the charges that person faces. >> cooler weather moving in to the bay area for the second half of your weekend. what impact it will have after new temperatures today and how long this trend is going to last.

israeli and palestinian leaders are meeting in cairo. the current cease fire is set to expire at mitt -- at midnight. the united nations says 2,000 palestinians have been killed and several wounded since the war began. 67 israelis have been killed. protesters chanted and carried palestinian flags as they marched to the port of oakland where an israeli ship was set to dock this weekend. that cargo ship was scheduled to arrive yesterday afternoon but ended up off the coast of monterey instead. protesters call it a victory, saying it was their action that kept the ship from docking in oakland as scheduled. they say the effort

to block israeli ships is part of a larger campaign to organize boycott sanctions. >> we want to isolate zionism, isolate israeli apartheid just like it fell in south africa it will fall in palestine as well. >> the cargo ship is expected to dock in oakland tonight. protesters plan to regroup to prevent that from happening. u.s. fighter jets and drones carried out at least nine air strikes in iraq dropping bombs near the country's largest dam. the air strikes come as pope francis sent in emissary to visit displaced christian yaz idies in iraq. there are reports extremists killed 80 men. the islamic state fighters gave them a date to convert to islam and when they failed to do so they were killed.

1.2 million people of the united kingdom, the u.s. and other countries are delivering aid to the refugees. isis militants still hold much of the dam area, a 40-mile long stretch along the tigress river and is the source of water and electricity for much of northern iraq. an official said kurdish forces have taken over parts of the country's largest dam which was captured by the islamic state extremist group. fireworks are to blame for a half a dozen small fires in oakland. the fires were reported yesterday around 10:15 in the morning. smoke and flames from those fires could be seen along the interstate. witnesses say they saw four men shooting off fireworks from a car. one man who lives close by said he called for help when he saw the fire. >> saw huge flames towering above the trees in cyclone

fashion. i immediately called 911. >> no one was hurt and no buildings were damaged but the fire did cause traffic delays in the area. the chp is hoping someone can identify the vehicle and the men involved. a wildfire in mendocino county has been 75% contained. the fire has burned more than 12,000 acres since it started on july 30th. firefighters are expecting to have it fully contained by this wednesday. the fire was sparked by dry conditions and lightning. the cost of the fire is estimated to be about $35 million. a black bear cub burned in a washington wildfire earlier this month is making a slow recovery. the 37-pound bear named cinder was discovered under a horse trailer in north central washington where a fire burned about 400 square miles and destroyed 300 homes. the bear still has third degree burns on her paws and is on pain medication. it is still too soon to know if cinder can

he mistook the teen's replica pellet gun for an assault rifle. the district attorney did not file charges against gelhaus. >> they shouldn't have the man come back to work here. that's ridiculous. >> reporter: parents say their children are scared of what may happen. >> they're afraid. they're fearful. they're afraid they will be next. >> reporter: residents like jordan are crned too. she's never been to an andy lopez protest till now. >> i wouldn't want to have deputy gelhaus at my front door. >> reporter: she feels gelhaus should sit behind a desk for the rest of his career. >> he doesn't have good judgment and i want him off the county roads. >> reporter: california patrol troopers stood by in case the crowd got out of control but things remained peaceful. >> we know the overwhelming people in the county are supportive of law enforcement and public safety in general. >> reporter: the supporters say they won't move forward until

action is taken against gelhaus. >> none of us are going to stop. >> the sheriff's department did not make any arrests during yesterday's protests. the agency says it is looking forward to moving forward when gelhaus returns this week. tense moments in san francisco after a suspicious device was found in the outer richmond district. the city's bomb squad was called to a home to 40th avenue just after 9:30 yesterday morning. police say a person was cleaning out the garage of a relative who had recently died when they discovered unusual items. the bomb squad determined those devices were old road flares and electrical fuses that were harmless. a restaurant in san jose will be closed indefinitely after a fire started there. the fire started in the kitchen and spread to the roof before it was extinguished. the restaurant's owner and servers were inside at the time but no one was injured.

it will be closed for repairs until further notice. nearly four years after a pipeline explosion and fire in san bruno, the utility is expected to enter a plea for revised felony criminal charges stemming from the 2010 explosionism -- explosion. pg&e calls the explosion a tragic accident and is taking responsibility but adds that none of its workers knowingly violated laws. later this month the san jose city council is expected to vote on new water use restrictions. the council could declare a citywide water shortage because of the drought. that would place new limits on watering lawns or landscaping. the san jose mercury news reports the city does not plan to hire anyone to enforce restrictions or issue fines.

the city council is expected to discuss the issue at a meeting august 26th. some cemeteries in southern california have taken extra steps to comply with statewide water restrictions because of the drought. groundskeepers removed the grass at one ceremony in california and replaced it with plants. other cemeteries plan to use recycled water for landscaping next year. once known for growing more hops than any place else. a group of beer growers and hop growers are making it their mission to bring the once thriving hop business back to life. they met in dixon to form the california hop exchange. they discussed plans to increase the amount of hops grown in the area. >> the craft beer industry has taken over and a lot of home brewers. the buy local movement, farm to fork fresh. that's taken over.

>> off i-80 west of davis you can see the start of their effort. the strange looking trellises with vines snaking up 20 feet are plants that grow hops that is the flavor maker in beer. a bay area congressman will take a closer look at the dangers of the concussions. a public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. tomorrow at alhambra high to discuss identifying and preventing head trauma. congressman mike thompson is spearheading the event. he says more there are almost 4 million sports and recreation-related concussions in the united states each year. people driving in san francisco this week may see extra police officers patrolling around schools. the officers will be providing extra enforcement of 15-mile-per-hour zones to help students get to class safely. two years ago san francisco became the first city in the state to install 15-mile-per-hour school zones city wide. police say the zones

are meant to decrease speeding and encourage more families to walk or bike to school. more than 3,000 students from san francisco's bayview hunter's point neighborhood are ready for school. yesterday they were able to pick out free backpacks stuffed with school supplies. the back to school event was put on by the san francisco public defenders magic program. it was the group's second backpack giveaway this month. >> they need new supplies. they need pence ils, pens, whatever is going to get them through the school year, we're happy to provide that. >> the backpack giveaway has been going on for the past 11 years. since it started it's helped thousands of students from kindergarten through 12th grade. time now is 7:41. a plane crashes near sacramento leaving one person dead, another critically injured. coming up at 8:00, the connection that plane has to the bay area. >> new information about the kidnapping of two amish sisters

four people were rescued yesterday from a yacht that caught fire near malibu. a fire boat was called in to put out the flames. three adults and one child were onboard the 40-foot yacht when the fire happened. one of the boat's owners said they tried to put out the fire themselves but it spread too quickly. everyone onboard was able to escape. it's not clear how the fire started. authorities say the new york couple charged in the

kidnapping of two amish sisters sexually abused the girls before letting them go. steven house, jr. may have planned to abduct other children. they were kidnapped wednesday from the farm stand in front of the family's home near the canadian border. they were set free from their captors about 24 hours later and turned up safe at a house 15 miles from where they were taken. >> there's a ton of knots in my stomach still thinking it would happen so close. we kind of feel we failed as neighbors because we didn't see anything going on for 24 hours. >> the couple was on the prowl for easy targets and didn't necessarily grab the girls because they were amish. they're both being held without bail. the denver post reports a judge ruled friday that sin mark could have predicted moviegoers

might be targeted for an attack. the judge also said cinemark may not have done enough to prevent the shooting. there's a followup to a story we've been reporting about a program providing decommissioned military gear to a police department. salinas was given one of these $700,000 bomb-proof vehicles last year but congress says it will review the merits of the program following backlash. critics argue police in ferguson used this equipment but made the situation even worse. hundreds of troops say their privately owned vehicles have gone missing or were

representing the growers has filed a lawsuit. strawberry varieties created by uc davis represented more than half of california's crops which is valued at $2 billion a year. raising money for shelter cats here in the bay area. coming up at 8:20, the new cafe that will give cat lovers a chance to mingle with them while raising money for a new cost. >> how the tragic accident in new york prompted officials to be more strict with what drivers can do on the track.

the annual breast cancer challenge is right around the corner. organizers hope to have 1,000 people walking in this year's event. it will happen saturday at oakland's lake merit. the walk is set up by a nonprofit organization called friends of faith. it was started by former ktvu reporter

kate before she lost her battle to breast cancer. last year they raised $1,000 for bay area women. notre dame is investigating allegations of cheating against four of its football players. they're convicted of submitting homework that someone else worked on. head football coach brian kelly says he's disappointed in the news and says notre dame holds players to a very high standard. >> we don't look the other way. if we find inproprieties as it relates to this matter we're going to address them and deal with them. >> the players cannot take part in games until the investigation is over. notre dame's first game is in two weeks. today is the first day nascar will institute new rules following the accident when tony stewart hit and killed another driver. today's event will be held east of detroit, michigan.

central time, police sprayed teargas. for a while it looked like the teargas and falling rain was going to thin out the crowd but a short time later someone opened fire. one man was struck by gunfire. he's now in critical condition. >> we brought out the tactical unit. they got on the street at which time they looked at their binoculars. a suspect came out holding a handgun. >> al sharpton will hold a rally with michael brown's family. the family has hired a pathologist to order another autopsy. here in oakland several protesters were pepper-sprayed. oakland police had one of its officers assaulted while he tried to make an arrest. the

officer was treated at the hospital and released. several businesses in oakland and berkeley are tallying up the costs of friday night's demonstration there. broken windows, graffiti written on the wall of a bank in oakland. police arrested two people there, a 45-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting an officer and a 41-year-old hayward man on suspicion of obstructing police. one person is dead, another hospitalized after a plane register today a bay area man crashed near placerville. the small plane went down around 7:00 last night while heading to the swansboro country airport in flaserville. the aircraft was circling the airport before it went down. one man died at the scene while another person who was onboard was transported to roseville medical center. their identities have not been released. we've learned it was registered to richard neland of san jose. the woman who made headlines for reportedly trying to sneak onboard airliners is

now out of jail. 62-year-old marilyn jean hartman was released because of jail overcrowding. she was ordered to spend over 100 days in jail. previously hartman pled no contest to sneaking on to a southwest airlines flight from san jose to los angeles. the next day she was arrested again at l.a.x. san francisco's police chef is asking for help in finding the hit-and-run driver who killed a 2-year-old girl. it happened on mission street between 4th and 5th streets outside the westfield shopping center. 2-year-old mayana and her family were in the crosswalk when mayana were hit. >> two of the officers responded, attempted cpr. you can imagine how they're feeling. it's just awful. >> police are looking for a car captured on video from a nearby

surveillance camera. that's a picture you're looking at on your screen. a light or white colored 90s modeled honda or lexus or camera with dark rims. >> somebody watching knows this car. please come forward. >> they're reviewing the incident to see whether the car ran a red light. even if it doesn't, police say as soon as the driver fled the scene, they broke the law. a 16-year-old is being treated for severe burns to his face, chest, and neck after a mixture of gun powder and magnesium exploded near him. this happened around 10:30 friday morning at the boy's home at bel marin keys boulevard. the boy's father said they were using the mixture to break up concrete on the side of the house. he couldn't get it to light so he increased the amount and lit a hand flare which his son was holding. a new report says a

shortage of san jose police officers means a lot of veteran detectives are back to routine patrols instead of working on special units. resources have been redirected to make up for the shortage and many officers are forced to work overtime. according to the san jose mercury news, police say there are not enough investigators to fully staff special units like vice, electronic crimes and financial crimes. there were 1400 officers in 2008 and now there are just about 900. alameda county's district attorney wants to clear the huge backlog of untested rape kits. da nancy o'malley says the county is pushing the fbi to streamline the way sexual assault evidence is processed. o'malley is hoping alameda county can become a model if the way rape kits are processed nationwide. nearly 2,000 rape kits remain untested. congressman mike honda also wants to speed up testing by certifying private crime labs to

process dna tests. activists in the south bay say the name may have changed but the commitment remains the same. today is the silicon valley pride festival formerly called san jose pride. today's festival is at discovery meadow in san jose. organizers say this year's theme is honoring our past, securing our future. it's the largest lgbt event in the south bay. muni is reporting success saying it's catching more people trying to catch a free ride. in july 2 investigates found the number of inspectors has dropped slightly in the last year from 63 to 55. despite the drop, a muni spokesman says inspectors are writing dozens of tickets a day. the police department has an overnight team assigned to keep a look out for fare evasion. they say without fare

israeli and palestinian negotiators are meeting today in cairo in an effort to reach a comprehensive agreement to end the war in gaza. the current cease fire is set to expire at midnight. today a palestinian negotiator said his aside is less optimistic about indirect talks about the end of the war. close to 2,000 palestinians have been killed. more than 10,000 people have been wounded since the war began. 67 israelis have been killed. protesters chanted and carried palestinian flags as they marched to the port of oakland where an israeli cargo ship was set to dock this weekend. that ship was scheduled to arrive yesterday afternoon but it ended up off the coast of monterey instead. the protesters call it a victory, saying it was their actions that kept that ship from docking in oakland as scheduled. they say the effort to block

israeli ships is part of a larger campaign to organize boycotts, sanctions and encourage divestment from israel. >> we want to isolate zionism, isolate israeli apartheid so just like it fell in south africa, it will fall in palestine as well. >> the cargo ship is expected to dock in oakland tonight. protesters say they plan to regroup to prevent that from happening. u.s. fighter jets and drones carried out at least nine air strikes in iraq, dropping bombs on islamic militants. the air strikes come as pope francis sent an emissary to visit displaced christian yazidis in iraq. islamic state fighters reportedly gave villagers a deadline to convert to islam and when they failed to do so they were killed. chp says fireworks were to blame for a half a dozen small

fires in oakland. they were reported at 10:00 yesterday afternoon. smoke and flames could be seen along the interstate. witnesses say they saw four men shooting off fireworks from a car. no one was hurt and no buildings were damaged. the fire did cause some traffic delays in the area. the chp is hoping someone will help them identify the vehicle and the men involved. a wildfire in mendocino that's been burning for nearly two weeks is 75% contained. the fire burned 12,000 acres since it started on july 30th. firefighters expect to have it fully contained by this wednesday. the fire was sparked by dry conditions and lightning. the cost of fighting the fire is estimated to be at $35 million. a black bear cub burned in a washington wildfire earlier this month is making a slow recovery. the 37-pound bear named cinder was discovered under a horse trailer in north central washington where a fire burned about 400 square miles and destroyed 300 homes.

texas governor rick perry is speaking out against federal indictments charging him of abuse of power. a grand jury indicted him friday on two felony counts stemming from his veto of $7.5 million from the state's office of public integrity. he wanted rosemary lindbergh to resign after her arrest for drunk driving. the grand jurors charged perry with abusing his official capacity and coercing a public servant. >> i intend to fight against those who would erode our state's constitution and laws purely for political purposes and i intend to win. >> perry says based on the drunk driving charges against lindbergh, he was exercising his

discretion with his veto. perry's critics note her office was investigating one of his projects and questions had surfaced regarding money given to one of perry's allies. late actor and comedian robin williams is being honored with a two-day film festival. the festival features some of williams' best work including mrs. doubtfire, the bird cage and good morning vietnam. the movies are playing on 11th and harrison in san francisco. people say the festival is a great way to honor the hollywood star who called the bay area home. >> watching this san francisco movie, great classic film right here, bring me back to my childhood. >> the festival continues today from noon to 6:00. the movies being shown today a jumanji, good will hunting, and dead poet's society. admission and popcorn are free. we've learned glide memorial church in san francisco will be honoring robin williams

boy in sonoma county. a group of protesters stood on a santa roada street corner to protest the return of deputy erik gelhaus to full duty patrol. investigators cleared him of any wrongdoing but demonstrators say they don't trust him. >> i wouldn't want to call the sheriff's department. i live in the county. and have deputy gelhaus at my front door. i would not have confidence in him. i would not have confidence in his judgment. >> there were no problems at the demonstration but protesters vowed to push city and county leaders to take action to remove gelhaus from full duty. a restaurant in downtown san jose will be closed indefinitely after a large fire. it started just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon at the guadalajara restaurant and bakery on empire street. the fire started in the kitchen and spread to the roof before it was

extinguished. the restaurant's owner and servers were inside at the time but no one was injured. it will be closed for repairs. nearly four years after a pipeline explosion and fire in san bruno, a federal court hearing is scheduled tomorrow against pg&e. the utility is expected to enter a plea for revised felony crime charges stemming from the pipeline blast. eight people were killed and 38 homes were destroyed. pg&e calls the explosion a tragic accident and says it's taking responsibility but adds that none of its workers knowingly violated the law. a bay area congressman will take a closer look at the dangers of concussions. a public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. tomorrow at alhambra high regarding head trauma. mike thompson is spearheading the event. it includes parts of contra costa, sonoma, napa counties. there are almost 4

million concussion-related sports injuries in the u.s. a year. expected to vote on new water use restrictions. the council could declare a citywide water shortage and ask all residents to cut use by 20%. that would place new limits on watering lawns or landscaping. the city does not plan to hire anyone to enforce the restrictions or issue fines. the city council is expected to discuss the issue at a meeting on august 26th. some cemeteries in southern california have taken extra steps to comply with statewide wroughter rixzs. according to the san francisco chronicle, groundskeepers removed the grass at one cemetery in southern california and replaced it with native plants. the move could help to reduce water use by 60%. other cemeteries pln to -- plan to use recycled water. the sacramento region was once known for growing more hops than any other place. a group

of beer brewers and hop growers are making it their mission to bring the business back to life. they met in dixon to form the california hop exchange. they discussed plans to increase the amount of hops grown in the area. >> the craft beer industry is taking over and a lot of home brewers so demantd is starting to pick up for supply and the by local movement, farm to fork fresh, all that's taking over. >> just off interstate 80 west of davis you can see the start of their efforts. the trellises with vines staking up 20 feet are plants that grow hops, the flavor maker in beer. a bay area program has started a kickstarter campaign to give dance, yoga, and art classes to kids free of charge. jamaroo is trying to raise $20,000 by wednesday. so far the program has raised about $12,000. organizers say if the

money is raised, six underfunded schools in the area will receive free weekly dance classes for an entire school year. it currently serves 100 schools in the bay area per week. people driving in san francisco may see extra police officers patrolling around schools. the officers will be providing extra enforcement of 15-mile-per-hour zones to help students get to class safely. two years ago san francisco became the first city in the state to install 15-mile-per-hour school zones city wide. police say the zones are meant to decrease speeding and encourage more families to walk or bike to school. more than 3,000 students from bayview hunter's point neighborhood are ready for school. yesterday they were able to pick out free backpacks stuffed with school supplies. it was put on by the public defenders magic program. it was the group's second backpack giveaway this month. >> they need new supplies. pencils, pens, whatever is going to get them through their school

it was a large turnout for the memorial of a little girl from washington who police say was killed by a friend of the family. 6-year-old jenise wright disappeared from her home on august second. five days later her body was found near the mobile home park where she lived. the family's 17-year-old neighbor, gabriel galeda was arrested. hundreds came to pay their respects to wright and support her family. >> this has been something that is the deepest heartbreak and challenge. jenise was a bright star in our life. and words cannot describe the profound loss we feel. >> wright's father says he was mentoring galleda and trying to teach him to be a responsible member of the community. police say he's facing charges of first degree murder and sexual assault. if convicted he faces life in prison. a judge in colorado has

ruled 20 lawsuits can move forward against the movie theater owner where the aurora shooting happened. the denver post reports a judge ruled friday that cinemark could have predicted moviegoers might be targeted for an attack. the judge also said cinemark may have not done enough to try to prevent the shooting. james holmes is accused of opening fire during a streaming of the dark knight rises in 2012. police in indianapolis are becoming the first in the country to use the latest bulletproof technology in the efforts of an 8-year-old boy. jason has started a go fund me account to raise money for new bulletproof plates for the officers in his state. so far he's raised more than $16,000. he said he got the idea after an officer was killed in the line of duty. thanks to his efforts 34 of the newly designed plates

are expected to be delivered to officers in the coming days. we have a followup to a story we've been reporting about a program providing decommissioned military gear to law enforcement. the police department received a 30-ton armored personnel program. congress will now review the merits of the program following some public backlash. critics argue that police in ferguson, missouri use their surplus military equipment to try to control protesters but instead it made the volatile situation even worse. in other news, the military is looking in to the whereabouts of cars belonging to service members. hundreds of troops say their privately owned vehicles have gone missing or were damaged while being shipped to bases. an outside company is being paid a billion dollars to handle the vehicle transports. the company blames the problem on having to move a large number of cars in a short period of time. let's turn to rosemary with

than 1,000 units over the past two years. the city of berkeley is facing a lawsuit from opponents of a proposed soda tax. the tax would add a 1-cent per ounce add. people who support the tax say it will help lower the spike in childhood diabetes. measure d will be on the city's november ballot. relations between california's strawberry growers and uc davis have gone sour. the sacramento bee reports a university breeding program that promotes new varieties of strawberries may be shutting down. university officials say that's not the case. but there's been a lawsuit filed. strawberry varieties created by uc davis represent half of california's crops. city officials in los angeles are considering a new way to increase voter turnout but not everyone thinks the idea is ethical. the idea is to pass out lottery tickets to people

>> you're violating the state curfew. >> at 12:45 a.m. central time, police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. protests in the deadly shooting of michael brown for a while, it looked like the tear gas as well as falling rain and seemed to thin out the crowd. but a short time later, someone opened fire. the shooting victim is now in critical condition. >> we brought out the unit and at which time, we looked at by inoculas and came out into the middle of the street holding a handgun. >> someone also shot at a police car but no officers were hurt. a total of 7 people were arrested overnight in connection with the protests. no word if the gunman was one of them. reverend al sharpton will hold a rally in missouri today with michael brown's parents. the justice department said the autopsy will happen as soon as possible, but officials will still take into account the original missouri state autopsy. oakland police say several officers were pepper sprayed by

demonstrators in solidarity with ferguson. oakland police say one of the officers was assaulted while trying to make an arrest. the officer was treated at a hospital and later released. several businesses in oakland and berkeley are tallying up the cost of friday night's demonstration there. some windows broken, graffiti on the windows. and then assault on an officer and 41-year-old hayward man charged on suspicion of assaulting police. in oakland, an israeli ship was set to dock this weekend. the ship scheduled to arrive yesterday afternoon but ended up off the coast of monterey instead. they said the effort to block israeli ships part of a larger

campaign to boycott sanctions and encourage divestment from israel. the ship is expected to dock in oakland this evening and the group wants to prevent that from happening. israel and palestinian negotiators are meeting in an effort to hammer out the conflict in gaza. ends at midnight. close to 2,000 palestinians have been killed and thousands of people have been wounded since the war began july 8th. israel lost 67 people in the war. there are new fears about the ebola outbreak in africa. this morning, the government of lye of -- liberia, residents with a health clinic in a quarantined area and items stolen including contaminated

a memorial fund has been set up in myana's honor. making headlines for repeatedly trying to sneak on jets is now out of jail. the los angeles sheriff's department said 62-year-old marilyn jean heartman was released because of jail overcrowding. on wednesday, a judge ordered heartman to serve 177 days in jail for violating probation by returning to los angeles international airport. previously, heartman pled no contest from sneaking on a plane from san jose to los angeles. a judge released her and told her to stay away from the airport if she didn't have a ticket but the next day, she was arrested again at lax. animal lovers around the country come together to protest the sale of rabbit meat at whole foods market. the protest is held outside of 40 stores in the nation. protests in the bay area happen at the palo alto store on emerson street and the campbell store on south baascon avenue.

witnesses say they saw four men shooting off fireworks from a car. one man who lives close bioecologied -- close by called for help when he saw the huge flames. >> they were above the trees in cyclone fashion and i immediately called 9-1-1. >> no one was hurt and no buildings were damaged but the fire did cause some traffic delays in the area. chp is hoping someone can help identify the vehicle and men involved. a loud fire in mendocino county is now 75% contained. expected to be fully contained by wednesday. it was sparked by dry conditions and lightning and the cost of fighting the fire so far is estimated to be at $35 million. a black bear cub burned in the washington wildfire early this month is making a slow recovery. the 37-pound bear named cinder

into some trouble in the store there, christien. >> reporter: yeah, mike, i'm trying to pick out a jersey for you, trying to figure out if you're more of a kaepernick guy or maybe you're more of a harbaugh guy. the shirt i saw this morning, absolutely cracked me up. now, they are absolutely gearing up here. we just saw the cheerleaders walk by. you can see some of the drum corp. getting ready as well. a lot of excitement at levi stadium. everybody getting ready for the big game. we do have some video from earlier of fans arriving out here. today's preseason match-up hitting the 49ers against the afc champion denver broncos and fanning tell us they're getting ready for football, looking forward o a look here inside levi stadium. one of the major concerns is traffic and parking issues that plagued the san jose quakes soccer game two weeks ago. fans tell us they hope for the best today when 68,000 fans pack in to levi stadium here. we talked to one fan who actually stayed at a hotel last night to get a jump on the crowd.

minutes agency, attorney general eric holder announced due to extraordinary circumstances involved in the case in ferguson, missouri, he's asking a federal autopsy be performed on the body of michael brown. officials in ferguson say despite heavy police presence violence during protests remains the problem. last night while police were enforcing a midnight curfew, someone shot and critically injured a man. officers dispersed the crowd to get to the victim. >> we have a shooting victim in critical condition that may lose their life. we had a suspect standing in the middle of the road with a handgun. >> reporter: police aren't releasing much information about the victim. they arrested 7 people overnight as part of the police protest. reverend al sharpton will hold a vigil with the parents. back here, there's new outrage over an officer- involved shooting that took the life of a 13-year-old boy in sonoma county last year. a group of protesters stood on

the santa rosa street corner to protest the return of erik gelhaus to full patrol. he shot and killed lopez after mistake it is pellet gun for an awful rifle. the investigators cleared him of wrongdoing and demonstrators say don't trust him. >> i wouldn't call the sheriff's department. and have deputy gelhaus at my front door. i would not have confidence in him or his judgment. >> there were no problems at the demonstration but protesters vowed to push city and county leaders to take action and remove gelhaus from full duty. in san francisco after a suspicious device was found in the outer richmond district. the bomb squad called to 40th avenue between anza and geary 9:30 yesterday morning. cleaning out the garage of a relative who recently died when they discovered unusual items. the bomb squad determined those devices were just old road flares and harmless. a group of people marched

through the mission district yesterday to stop the evicts of one family and bring attention to what they call the gentrification of the neighborhood. for 24 years, sergio linez and his family lived in the same rent controlled apartment. the last four years, he's been fighting an ellis act eviction. >> we're losing all of our families and our diversity, and so this is about keeping families in their homes. >> san francisco's comptroller reports the number of rent- controlled apartments in the city has decreased by more than 1,000 units over the past two years. a restaurant in downtown san jose will be closed indefinitely after a large fire. it started just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon at the

guadalahara restaurant. nearly four years after a pipeline explosion in san bruno, a federal court hearing the expected tomorrow against pg&e. expected to enter a plea for revised criminal charges stemming from the september 10 pipeline blast. 8 people were killed and some 38 homes were destroyed. pg&e calls the explosion a tragic accident and is taking responsible. they said none of the workers knowingly violated the law. later this month, san jose city council is expected to vote on new water use restrictions. it could declare a citywide water shortage because of the drought and asked all residents to cut use by 20%. that would place new limits on watering lawns or landscaping. the san jose mercury news reports they don't plan to hire anyone to enforce the restrictions or issue fines. the city council is expected to

discuss the issue at a meeting on august 26th. some cemeteries in southern california have taken extra steps to comply with statewide water restrictions because of the drought. according to the san francisco chronicle, grounds keepers remove the grass at one cemetery and we placed it with native plants. the move could help to reduce water use by 60%. some other cemeteries plan to use recycled water for landscaping starting next year. the sacramento region once known for growing more hops than any other place, a group of beer brewers and hop growers make it their mission to bring the once thriving hops mission back to life. yesterday, a number of brewers and hop growers met in dixon to form the california hop exchange. they discuss plans to increase the amount of hops grown in the area. >> the craft beer industry is taking over and a lot of home brewers so the demand is starting to pick up for the supply. and the local movement, farm fresh and all that has taken

over. >> off interstate 80 west of days, you can see the efforts with vines taking nearly 20 feet are plants that grow hops. the flavor maker in beer. >> a bay area program started a kick starter campaign to give dance, yoga and art classes to kids free of charge. jamba roo trying to raise. they have $12,000 so far. they could receive dance classes all year. people driving in san francisco this week may see extra police officers patrolling around their schools. the officers will be providing extra enforcement of the 15- mile-per-hour zone. two years ago, san francisco became the first city in the state to enact a 15-mile-per- hour school zone citywide. police say the zones are meant

to decrease speeding and encourage more families to walk and bike to school. more families are now ready for school. yesterday, they were able to pick out free backpacks and school supplies. the back to school event was put on the by the defender's program, the group's backpack giveaway this month. >> pencils, pens, whatever will get them through the school year, we'll need that and provide that. they burn through the town. >> the backpack giveaway going on for the past two years, it's started thousands of students from kindergarten through 12th grade. bitter relations between uc davis and strawberry growers, the program that could be shutting down that causes strawberry growers to file a lawsuit. up next, an 8-year-old boy hoping to buy for the police officer and the tragic event that sparked it. a cooldown in effect for

eastern time. while there's no definitive word for why he's going back to washington, several meetings are planned including one with vice president joe biden. possible talks including the iraq conflict but no major nos. are expected. president obama will return to martha's vineyard on tuesday. police in indianapolis the first in the country to use some of the newest bulletproof technology and it's all thanks to the efforts of an 8-year-old boy. >> please donate and if you do, thank you. >> jason raised more than $16,000 and got the idea after an officer was killed in the line of duty. thanks to his efforts, 34 of the newly designed plates are expected to be delivered to officers any day. we have a follow-up to a story we have been reporting about a program providing decommissioned military gear to

law enforcement agencies. the redwood city police department received the personnel carrier and salinas was given one of the bomb-proof vehicles last year but congress will now review the merits of the program following some backlash. critics argue that police in ferguson, missouri, used their surplus military equipment to try to control protesters but instead, they said it made the volatile situation even worse. the military is looking into the whereabouts of cars belonging to service members. hundreds of troops say they're privately vehicles gone to overside bases. a billion dollars to handle the vehicle transports but the company blames on asking asked to move a large number of cars in a short period of time. the city of berkeley is facing a lawsuit from opponents of a proposed soda tax that would impose a 1 cent per ounce

levee on the drinks. it's illegally biased. people who support the tax say it will help lower the spike in childhood diabetes. measure d will be on the city's november ballot. relations between california's strawberry growers and uc davis have gone sour. the sacramento bee reported a university's breeding program that creates new varieties of strawberries may be shutting down. university officials say that is not the case, but an association representing the growers has filed a lawsuit. strawberry varieties created we uc davis represent more than half of california's crop which is valued at about $2 billion a year. city officials in los angeles are considering a new method to increase voter turnout. but not everyone thinks it's a great idea. the idea is to pass out lottery tickets to people who vote in local elections. the l.a. ethics commission voted to move forward with the incentive and see how it's accepted in various hearings throughout the city. >> in other jurisdictions, they
