eric holder about the arrest and is sending holder to ferguson. more now on this developing news from cristina rendon. >> reporter: we've been monitoring the live feed and in the last hour things escalated. authorities started to move in and heavy armed gear, that happened within the last 15 minutes and earlier as you mentioned police fired stun gun grenades and tear gas canisters as protesters threw rocks at them. >> they're throwing more tear gas. >> reporter: a violent pattern repeats at night in ferguson missouri. tonight the national guard is on hand to try to restore peace. president obama addressed the violence today. >> well i understand the passions and the anger that arise over the death of michael

brown, giving into that anger by looting or carrying guns, and even attacking the police only serving to raise tensions and start chaos. >> reporter: eric holder will go to ferguson wednesday to meet with federal officials. a move john burress says is unusual. >> for them to come in right now is a huge huge step. and it only shows the important that the president sees in the case. >> reporter: the shooting of michael brown reminds him of the shooting of oscar grant. >> it's the community frustration that something has to be done. >> reporter: preliminary findings show the bullets were not fired at close range and hit brown in the front of the

body. >> this officer should have been arrested. >> reporter: but a different version of the shooting was told by a radiation by a friend of officer wilson. she says that wilson was come at by brown so he started shooting. the president says the military and local law enforcement is different and he doesn't want those lines blurred. we will of course continue to monitor the developments in ferguson. for now we're live in our newsroom, cristina rendon. >> we won't back down. in oakland late today about two dozen people staged a rally protesting the shooting of michael brown. as you can see the group encountered a line of officers and there was a brief face off but tonight there are no reports of any arrests. in san francisco, a similar protest this'ving drew a small

and peaceful crowd to justin hermann plaza. officers responded to a nine # one call about a woman threatening her family with an oozie. shellman came out of the household what appeared to be a gun. shellman is seen advancing toward police as an officer fired a single shot. it turns out that shellman was carrying a cordless drill. tonight at 10:30, two investigates questions the chief of police about the chaos and why he says his men did the right thing. a grand jury indict reveals

disturbing details from behind closed doors of a slaughter house. 8.7millionpounds of beef processed at that facility were recalled. it says from the owners of the owner, two workers placed heads from a cow next to the cancer eye caucuses. they have pleaded not guilty. the recalled meat was distributed to churches, schools and nonprofit organizations. there's been no reports of any injuries. we checked the temperature it was 80 degrees in santa clara. at candle stick it was just 67 degrees.

a former ymca child worker denied charges. nicholas lermeneir was arrested after police say he sexually assaulted four young girls under his supervision. some of the victims testified today in the preliminary hearing. if the case goes to trial, he will face charges. the california state senate is set to take up control next week. the legislation focuses on mental health and was triggered by a case -- >> reporter: this is a copy of ab1014 the gun violence

restraining order. the parents of victim chen who attended leland high school here tell us this bill could save lives. >> anything related to end the violence and to protect our children, i'm fully supportive of that. >> reporter: chen describes the loss of her son george as sensings and preventable. the sophomore was visiting his two friends in their apartment when the three were stabbed to death by a roommate. he went on to shoot and kill three others and injured 13 before turning the gun on himself. george's father says more than need to be done. >> we wish that gun control passed many years ago. >> reporter: it enabled us to act in a very prompt fashion. >> reporter: nancy skinner authored ab1014. the bill would allow law

at 1:00 this afternoon people gave the late actor a minute long-standing ovation. these fans posted their tribute on you tube. the event was organized by a group on facebook and nearly 32,000 people signed up to honor robin williams with a standing ovation. after closing to pay tribute to robin williams, rock theater will honor the late comedian. tomorrow comedians will take the stage again for a sold out show. we're told that the theater is still working out details for another larger tribute to remember and celebrate robin williams' life. and there's now a movement to rename the waldo tunnel after robin williams. a change.org petition has

life in the gaza strip should remain calm for another 24 hours now that a seize fire between israel and hamas has been extended. pelestinians are pushing for israel to drop its blockade of gaza. israel also wants to put off talks on to other issues allowing a new gaza sea port and airport. a cargo ship belonging to a company based in israel is floating in limbo tonight at the port of oakland. protesters are blocking port workers from off loading that ship. noelle walker is live at the port with a look at the support. >> reporter: the protesters

were over there across the street until about 45 minutes ago with a row of police officers behind them trying to keep them off of middle harbor row here. they're targeting the state of israel but some say others are paying a price. >> reporter: for the second day protesters picketed the port of oakland in solidarity with pelestinians. there were between three and four dozen protesters and about that many police officers. >> after 15 minutes, we will tow your cars. >> reporter: making sure the street was clear. >> this is 15 minutes though. >> reporter: and the protest peaceful. protesters are trying to block a cargo ship owned by vin shipping, not wholly israeli owned by has a port in israel.

protest tomorrow. reporting live at the port of oakland, noelle walker. a house shower in oakley led to the discovery of an illegal marijuana grow. 1,000 marijuana plants were confiscated. the estimated value a half million dollars. no one has been arrested. fire officials say someone officially bypassed the home's electrical system to power the grow operation. part of a main thorough fair in concord remains closed tonight after a truck crash into a power pole there. it happened more than 12 hours ago at about 8:40. power lines came down on to the street. 1,700pg & e customers lost power tonight. new developments in a criminal case against pg & e following that deadly san bruno

an illegal side show turned deadly. ktvu has obtained video of drivers doing donuts on the highway. these illegal gathers are not new to the bay area. >> reporter: as claudine wong reports this time over the weekend it unfortunately ended with a deadly crash. >> reporter: news chopper 2 was over head when our crews spotted a side show on the way

at the port of oakland but there were others on 580 and 880. >> within a 15 minute window we had multiple events going and they're always moving. >> reporter: near gulf road, ena elite recorded this video. >> they blocked off the whole freeway. it was shocking to me to see that amount of people. >> reporter: she called 911 repeatedly. but even after police got on the scene, the cars continued to cause problems. when this officer got out of the vehicle, watch the driver in the tan car he continues to drive around the stopped cars. then the passenger throws what looks like a can at the chp vehicle. then as a steady stream of car cross the toll lane. drivers got out of their cars and covered up their license plate with paper and even their shirts. even after they started back in the other direction. the chp say it is side shows

continued. >> they continue running traffic breaks and slowing down the traffic which once again is extremely dangerous. >> reporter: one motorcycle was tracked by the chp chopper. >> there was a description on three or four. and this is the one the helicopter happened to follow. the motorcyclist was driving at 100 miles per hour with no lights on. >> reporter: he exited in castro valley just blocks from ulayo's home. >> i heard the helicopter and i hear sirens. >> reporter: a sheriff deputy spotted him but a chp officer says there wasn't even time to give chase. >> the cyclist went into the intersection and broadsided an suv. >> reporter: the crash investigation is continuing as is a side show investigation with the chp saying they're trying to aggressively track down anyone involved.

claudine wong, ktvu news. an oakland plan pled not guilty today to charges of murdering his wife. 57-year-old lori wolf was found dead july 5th inside her home in mount claire where she shared with her husband. police said von tempo told them her husband fell down the stairs but an autopsy found that he died of blunt trauma. texas based waste management -- the suit claims the council has personal and political connections to cws. and says cws is ill prepared for the job and the council violated many of its own

tonight two investigates the circumstances surrounding the death of 41-year-old misty holt singh. she was the hostage killed last month. the mother of two was an innocent victim described by her husband of 13 years as a loving and giving bern. stockton police say the three bank robbers useed the hostages as human shields in the weeks following the shoot out authorities revealed that holt singh died from police gunfire and that she was shot 10 times. ktvu's allie rasmus has our report. >> reporter: during a high speed chase and shoot out, 71 71 stockton police officers

rushed to the scene. three armed gunmen took three hostages. >> they just dropped a hostage on the ground. >> get the hostage. take care of the hostage. >> reporter: that left one hostage still left in the suv. misty holt singh. but did all of the officers who responded know that? >> was there confusion? >> it was intense. i don't know of any specific confusion. >> reporter: two stockton police officers initially responded to the call about the bank robbery. those officers saw the gunmen force three hostages into the get away vehicle. >> the hostage negotiators and tackty -- tactical teams all those things began to be put in place. before they were able to be put in place they went mobile.

>> back off, give them room. >> reporter: officers try to reveal information of what they see. >> one of the persons is a hostage. >> confirmed, one of those persons looks like a hostage in the rear. >> reporter: there was certainly dialogue going on and communication to best determine how many potential or actual hostages were in the car. >> reporter: didn't the officers who were outside the bank see them take the hostages and get away. >> they did. but the amount -- they didn't know what was there at the scene. they just showed up and saw what they saw. >> reporter: the chase appeared to be over the suspects fired their weapons first. >> the training is if there's a threat, that they're trained to stop the threat. so then there were no specific

commands to my understanding to begin fire. >> reporter: whether officers knew hostage misty holt sing was still in the vehicle is unclear. >> at that point though, did your officers know there was still a hostage in the car? >> we certainly know that there's a majority at least of the officers were aware. but again so many other dynamics were in play. >> reporter: the chief says what his officers were responding to was more like a roving active shooting scene than a high speed chase. he says in that situation the main objective -- >> is to locate and stop the threat as quickly as possible. >> so that's goal number one in those situations whether there's a hostage around or not. >> exactly as described. >> reporter: the san joaquin district attorney's office are all investigating what happened that day. and questions about communication and what information was relayed between officers during the incident are just some of the things they'll be trying to answer.

going to and from school. especially in light of all the pedestrians hit and killed by drivers so far this year. ktvu's david stevenson spoke to parents who are well aware of the dangerous. >> reporter: parents picked up their children today. >> proud moment today, first day. >> reporter: parents around the city were encouraged to walk kids to campus. a way of bonding and highlights street safety. >> for their safety. because there's a lot of cars here. >> reporter: 10 pedestrians have been killed in collisions this year. on friday a hit-and-run driver killed a 2-year-old girl in a south of market district. >> seeing that makes me want to be safer especially crossing the street. >> reporter: san francisco is the first city to lower speed limits to 15 miles per hour around all of its schools, but

some schools are at least partially exempt from the 15- mile-per-hour zone rule. >> the streets that they reside on are busy streets. which is counter intuitive because those are the dangerous streets. >> reporter: parents today said they're stepping up to make sure their children don't step into a crosswalk. >> as pedestrians, we have to look into that also. we can't just rely on a crossing guard. >> reporter: david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. a rock climber from the north bay has reportedly died in a climbing accident in yosemite national park right after he proposed to his girlfriend. relatives say 36-year-old brad parker of sebasta pool was

climbing cathedral peak. after he proposed to her, they separated and he went on to climb nathes crest. he is described as an experienced climber who did not use ropes. how this phenomenon has taken people closest to the cause by surprise. and people in the bay area could wake up to cold weather. and next a marine's young wife found dead her neighbor now under arrest. what investigators say may have been the motive. ♪

we have breaking news now from san jose where a man has suffered life threatening injurys in a hit-and-run collision. here's a live picture right now from the scene. san jose police say the incident took place near center road and oldem drive at about 8:15 tonight. the victim said to be an adult male was taken to the hospital. police say the driver took off and is still not been found. at this point there's no description of the vehicle. our crews on scene are working to find out more about the

at the radar. sweeping through, not picking up on anything. that's because the low clouds are below the beam and falling is the drizzle below the beam. you can see very widespread. there's a system off the coast. it's helping to provide that lift that we need in order to again get that drizzle. it could be drizzle even a few patches of light rain for tomorrow morning. this morning we actually had some accumulation along the coastline. some of our coastal hills we could see that again tomorrow morning. this system is going to continue to shift south i think by tomorrow morning it'll be in and around the monterey area and make its way toward southern california by the evening hours tomorrow. but temperature wise we're going to be a lot like what we had today. mid-80s for some of our warmer locations which is unseasonably mild for our inland communities for mid-august. 68degrees as you get going tomorrow morning in antioch 60 in concord. 59 redwood city. i think we'll have widespread clouds once again. and the possibility of some
