ago. breaking news out of the north bay. we just obtained this incredible new video of a car slamming into a popular cafe in sausalito after being chased by sheriff's deputies and interrupting a peaceful morning breakfast. good afternoon, i'm tori campbell. tara has more. >> reporter: good afternoon. this was a very dramatic breakfast for a man who was sitting down outside of the popular cafe underneath the yellow awning that is there. he was enjoying his morning coffee. let's take a look at nearby surveillance video that shows the crash unfolding. around 9:00 this morning, a silver sedan came speeding through the intersection of speed street and bridgeway. it slammed into a ford focus, which smacked into the front of the hair salon and side swiped the suv. the deputy was trapped inside

and the suspect's car careens up to the sidewalk where it kills a man eating breakfast at fred's place. >> the man who was pinned against the wall actually walked away. several good samaritans came and moved the car away from him and he walked away. >> reporter: policesy the -- say the suspect was involved in a domestic violence incident yesterday in marin city. the deputy recognized him and tried to pull him over. a female passenger and two-year- old child in the suspect's car were injured. the victim in the minivan was transported. the deputy was not hurt. miraculously, the customer walked away without a scratch. we don't know the extent of anyone's injuries in the minivan or suspect's car, but a bystander told us the child was not in a car seat and appeared to be okay. the suspect will face felony hit-and-run charges.

he tried to run away after this happened good samaritans were able to track him down and pen him down until authorities arrive. john fowler will have more on that on our later broadcast. >> thank you, tara. a small plane crash that killed a pilot and sparked a grass fire in marin county last night is under investigation today. the plane was flying from oregon to the bay area when the pilot had engine trouble and went down in the rural part of the valley. the single-engine beechcraft plane was trying to make an emergency landing when it disappeared and triggered a search in heavy fog. this is photo of the wreckage. after three hours of searching, the sheriff's deputy spotted a brush fire and the plane was located in the middle of the burn area. >> the aircraft sustained severe amount of damage as a result of the accident. and there is still a lot of the

fuselage left. the tail section. these are all things that will be looked at closely by the ntsb when they arrive in the afternoon. >> the fire burned 40 acres at last check and was 75% contained. authorities believe the pilot was the only one on board, but the plane was registered to two people. we have a new development to tell you about on a story we told you involving a hit-and- run accident in san jose. the police are telling us the driver responsible turned herself in. this is the second hit-and-run crash on the same street the past two days. jannie de la vega has more. >> reporter: good afternoon. the police have the female driver in custody. they have been interviewing her and trying to determine whether or not to book her for hit-and- run. we don't know what she told investigators about the crash.

police officers had support a road block -- road blocked off after people in the area called in tosay a car slammed into the man. the female driver returned to the scene two hours later. >> there are a lot of reasons why people leave. that will be a part of the decision-making process as to whether charges are filed. >> reporter: officers are trying to figure out how fast she was travelling and if the victim was jaywalking to determine who was at fault. investigators were out at the same stretch of road on sunday. a block away, a bicyclist was hit and killed while crossing the street. the driver of that crash left the scene and is still at large. >> it's very dangerous and sad. >> reporter: it's a main thoroughfare with a lot of pedestrian traffic. people living and working in the area are not surprised and say the crosso walks don't help. >> and they -- crosswalks don't help. >> they will still keep coming. >> reporter: we observed this

man trying to cross. the lights flashing, signaling vehicles to stop but car after cars ignore it. eight cars pass before one yield. >> to label something as a problem area, we have to look at a bigger period of time to make that determination. so, certainly we'll be analyzing this to see what we need to do to help mitigate these types of incidents. >> reporter: the hit-and-run crash prompted some to be more careful. >> i have jay walked before. but, i think i am better safe than sorry. the crosswalk would be good to use. >> reporter: police need witnesses to both accidents to come forward if they have any additional information. right now, police don't have much on the suspect vehicle from sunday night that killed 53-year-old sun hong wynn. janinedela vega. >> thank you. and police in san jose have just announced the arrest of a suspect in a drunk driving

crash that sent 10 people to the hospital. the officers arrested 22-year- old brian qayar on suspicion of drunk driving, felony hit-and- run, and resisting arrest. he's accused of causing a fiery crash sunday night on ocala avenue near capitol expressway involving eight cars. aipalityo -- palo alto martial arts instructor is facing a child molestation charge. the 39-year-old jorge alberto tejada put his arms around a 17- year-old employee and tried to kiss her. the police say the girl repeatedly pulledda,way until he released her. it happened last year and was reported in may. the police say they're not aware of any other victims but are asking anyone with information to contact them. officer, what is going on? >> this area is not safe to be here anymore. okay. >> are you moving the protestors or media or what? >> everybody. >> continuing coverage of the violent protests in ferguson, missouri. ten days after the deadly police shooting of 18-year-old

michael brown. last night, two people were shot and 31 were arrested and two builds burned. some people in the crowd were throwing molotov cocktails and frozen water bottles at officers. today, attorney general eric holder is getting ready for his trip to the area tomorrow. and ktvu's kyla campbell has more on the' action to the violent protests and the federal civil rights investigation. >> reporter: the president said authorities in ferguson need to distinguish between the peaceful protestors and criminals taking advantage of a teenager's tragic death. >> that is a small minority of folks and may not be residents of ferguson, but they're damaging the cause, not advancing. >> reporter: the justice department and fbi are looking to answer one big question: why did this police officer shot and kill 18-year-old michael brown when he was not armed?

forty fbi agents are going door- to-door collecting information and u.s. attorneys are interviewing witnesses. >> although these are, you know, issues of local jurisdiction, the doj works for me. when they're conducting an investigation, i have to make sure that i don't look like i'm putting my thumbs on the scales one way or another. >> reporter: the attorney general eric holder is concerned about ferguson police selectively releasing sensitive information in this case. he said he is determined to preserve the integrity of the justice department civil rights investigation. in washington, kyla campbell, can, tvu news. israel launched airstrikes on gaza today after a three- rock -- three rockets were fired from the palestinian territory. they both agreed to extend a cease fire for 24 hours as they work on a long-term deal. the talks are worked on in

cairo with no comments from egyptian officials. there is word that israel's prime minister ordered negotiators to return home and that hamas officials declared talks are over. and today, pope francis is morning the death of three of his relatives who died in a car crash in argentina. the pope's nephew and family were in a car that slammed into the back of a truck. the pope's great nephews who were two years old and eight months old and the children's mother were all killed. the nephew survived. pope francis is deeply shaken and is asking all who share in his grief to unite with him in prayer. tragedy in yosemite. a man falls to his death hours after proposing to his girlfriend. the plans to remember him. another cool start to the day. the clouds are going away and drizzle is clear. rosemary orosco will be here to tell you when dry, warmer weather will arrive. >> and following a massive

the phillip burton federal building on golden gate avenue in the tenderloin last night because of the suspicious device spotted inside a vehicle. they're pictures that were gathered on social media as the situation was unfolding. people posted that they were joltedda, wake when the device was detonated by the bomb squad. the california state senate will debate a new gun control bill this week that was prompted by the killing of six people earlier this year near uc santa barbara. it's called the gun violence restraining order and it would allow law enforcement, family members, or people who live with someone at risk of harming themselves or others to ask a judge to ban that person from possessing or buying a gun. family members are often the first to notice that someone is at risk to be dangerous to themselves or others. >> anything related to end the violence and to protect our children, i am for support of all of that. >> 19-year-old george chen, who grew up in san jose, was visiting two friends near uc

santa barbara when all three were stabbed to death by a roommate, elliott roger who went on to shoot, kill, and injur others before killing himself. his family expressed concern about his mental stability before the deadly rampage. and san francisco teachers are one step closer to a strike. now that the votes have been counted, nearly 99% of teachers opted to take action, concerning's new contract if negotiations fall a part. the district is offering an 8.5% raise over three years while the union wants a 21% raise over the same period. the next bargaining session is scheduled for september 2nd. a hayward elementary school is asking for help after being burglarized twice in two weeks. the classes start next week at colonial acres elementary school. when students arrive, they'll be without computers, crayons, paper, and sports equipment. the school mostly serves low- income families and the school's principal said it will be it of to replace everything

at 1, the 49ers hosting the san diego chargers. a 36-year-old man is being remembered after alling -- fallling to his death in yosemite hours after proposing to his girlfriend. these are facebook photos of brad parker and jamie dial. parker's body was found by park rangers on saturday after he fell from mathis crest while climbing along. the edition of rock climbs and he was an avid surfer, a paddle out will be held saturday morning where the russian river meets the ocean followed by a celebration of life in sebastopol. mandatory evacuations are in effect for 13,000 people in madeira county where firefighters are trying to get a handle on a massive wildfire. the so-called junction fire broke out yesterday afternoon near the highway 41 and highway 49 junction in oakhurst. the fire is threatening 500 homes and has already destroyed eight buildings. the officials are urging residents and business owners

. encouraging economic news that pushed the stock market higher today. home construction rebounded in july, offering hope the housing has regained momentum after two months of decline. inflation remained muted, thanks in part to falling gas prices. the dow is up 81. the nasdaq at its highest level since 2000 is up 18 at 4527. and the s&p is up 10. just checking now, home depot stock is up 6% now and that is after the biggest home improvement store chain reported earnings and revenues that beat analyst forecasts. home depot is considered a bell weather for the economy. people put extra money into home upgrades when they're feeling financially confident. the parents of a uc berkeley student wants everyone to know about the dangers of west nile virus after the 19- year-old daughter got seriously

ill from the mosquito -- mosquitobourne disease. abby murphy ended up in the emergency room twice suffering from a severe headache, rash, and neck pain. the teen thought it might be whiplash from a bike accident. tests later confirmed she contracted west nile viral meningitis, causing the membrane to be enflamed around the brain and spinal chord. they're using facebook to post information about ways to avoid getting west nile. it's expected to take up to three months for the teen to fully recover, which means she will miss the start of the fall semester. and mosquito fogging is scheduled in santa clara county tonight as part of an effort to prevent the spread of west nile. officials plan to concentrate on areas in mountain view and sunnyvale. the fogging is set to start at 11 tonight and last through 2 in the morning. this comes as county officials report a spike in the number of dead birds with west nile this year. mosquito fogging is scheduled in contra costa county, vector

control crews plan to spray an area in concord from 8:00 p.m. to 11 tonight. the smithsonian announced it's adding hundreds to its collection, dedicated to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender history. included are hundreds of items from the groundbreaking tv show will and grace. one of the first shows with principle characters who were openly gay. the show creators have donated original script, photographs along with documentation of the show's impact on the american tv audience. breaking news out of st. louis where police shot and killed a robbery suspect. according to local media outlets, it happened before 1:00 p.m. local time in north saint louis. the man tried to rob a convenience store with a knife. when police arrived, the suspect refused to put down the weapon and tried to attack police when he was shot and killed. we'll bring you more details as they're available. and we're also following a
