10 days of demonstrations and protests in ferguson missouri and people across the country and around the bay area continue to watch the tension situations there between the community and police. and for some here in the bay area, it's hitting them particularly hard. good evening everyone i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. one bay area family says they share a unique connection with the family of michael brown. the young black man shot and killed by police. they sat down with ktvu's allie rasmus to talk about it. she's in the newsroom now to tell us what they said. allie. >> reporter: oscar grant's uncle came back from a week long trip to ferguson, missouri. he and his wife met with the families of michael brown. that's johnson with the father of michael brown. the two families share a unique

and painful bond. >> this has happened to us, this is has happened to many other families just like us and you. >> reporter: 18-year-old michael brown was killed by a ferguson police officer 10 days ago sparking outrage in his missouri community. oscar grant was shot and killed by a b.a.r.t. police officer. >> the advice i gave to the father was to continue to pray. i do understand the anger and the pain. >> reporter: since brown's shooting there's been demonstrations in missouri and clashes with police. police have urged protesters to stay home after protests turned into vandalism. he and his wife said they took part in protests and they took pictures. >> this was all day every day. it was tremendously organized. they had a clean up crew. people that were picking up trash. >> reporter: 78 people were arrested last night.

many of the people detained came from out of state. but johnson says not all of the outsider are provocateurs. >> we are outsider. we came there for the simple fact that we felt justice was being threatened again. >> johnson says he also spoke with ron johnson seen there on that picture. he's with the missouri highway patrol. he is the man in charge of the police response in ferguson right now. he says johnson told him he got a call from b.a.r.t.'s police chief raney to offer advice on how to work with the community after an officer involved shooting. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. one man is in custody, three other people are hospitalized after this spectacular high speed crash in sausalito. police say it was incredibly lucky that no one was killed when a suspect tried to outrun a sheriff's car and crashed right into the outside tables at a cafe. ktvu's john fowler with more.

>> reporter: this horrific crash alarms people. a violent multicar crash closed the street at noon. >> i heard a huge thud and i ran out to see what i could do. >> reporter: ariano did something that some would call heroic. watch this. i obtained this video from a surveillance camera. a pursuing sheriff's car also crashed. witnesses say the suspect buick was traveling about 750 seven -- 70 miles per hour. the driver jumped out and ran. >> i just turned around and saw him right here. he looked nervous. i thought there he is. there's the guy. we just chased him back. he ended up going on the roof and we got him. >> reporter: on to the roof as the suspect talked to ariano.

>> i said it's not worth it. why don't you turn yourself in. as i was tilling -- telling him it's not worth it i was thinking, boy i hope he doesn't have a gun. >> reporter: passers by pulled a woman passenger and a 2-year- old boy from a car. another driver was also injured. bicyclists freed this lucky man pinned by the suspect's car. >> several good samaritans came and moved the car away from him and he walked away. >> the chief said it's fortunate no one was killed. neighbors say the bad guy certainly chose the wrong town to try to evade justice. reporting live in sausalito, john fowler, ktv you -- ktvu channel 2 news. an arrest in the hit-and- run of a little girl in san francisco. but it is not the driver who is behind bars. police arrested 25-year-old gauge for felony child endangerment. she is the aunt of that little

girl known as mimi. the two-year-old was killed by a hit-and-run driver over the weekend. while walking in a crosswalk in san francisco's mission district. so far the driver of the car has not been found. we are waiting for more information tonight from police who will reportedly speak to the media in about 30 minutes about this arrest. a rural part of marin county is the scene of a deadly plane crash investigation tonight. a single engine plane flying from oregon back to its home base in san carlos went back down last night. the crash started a grass fire and a long overnight search in the fog. fire crews finally located the wreck after the fire was under control. authorities say they have recovered the body of the pilot who was the only person on board but they haven't identified the person yet. the plane was having engine

trouble. 36-year-old brad parker was an avid rock climber, surfer, yoga instructor and chef. parker proposed to his girlfriend in yosemite and she said yes. then he went on a climb. park rangers said parker was climbing alone and wasn't using ropes when he fell. the friends say he died doing what he loved. >> the other side of that would be stop doing something that you absolutely love to do. that's not a way that we would choose to live our lives and obviously it's not a way that brad would either. >> parker's family plans to scatter his ashes in two places he loved, hawaii and yosemite. next month it'll be four years since a pipeline destroyed a san bruno neighborhood and killed eight people. new at 6:00, ktvu's tom vacar looks now at the gaping wounds that are still very visible in that community. >> reporter: this is sered

build all the homes. >> i don't think anybody really imagined the extend of the work or how long it would take. >> the cities dragging their feet i think. i think pg & e is dragging their feet getting these lots sold. >> reporter: the three way deal between the city, pg & e and the contractor is still being negotiated and the building season is just about over. best guestimate. >> spring of 2015. roughly 18 months maybe a little more quick than that. >> reporter: come on, it should be done by now. >> until then. >> yeah, it does remind us each and every day of what happened that night. >> reporter: pg & e which stands to make a profit on their lots issued a statement saying it's working with the developer and hopes to see the lots purchased by the end of the year. tom vacar, ktvu news. an israeli owned ship has left the area after being

blocked from unloading it's cargo. ktvu was over the scene as the ship left for los angeles. a spokesperson for the long shore workers says workers were reluctant to pass through protesters and unload the cargo because of safety concerns. >> police today broke up what they're calling a chilling plot to carry out a massacre at a southern california high school. investigators say officials at south pasadena high school were the first to learn about it. two boys were arrested yesterday. the police chief says the teens were using the internet to research automatic weapons and explosives and told police they planned to kill quote as many people as possible. >> we had talked about you know the outcome and how, how dire it was if the police ended up responding to a shooting like that. and they said they were willing to die for, for their plan. it wasn't so much a cause as it was a plan.

>> the two teens are charged with making threats and conspiracy. police say there will be extra patrols on hand for the first day of school on thursday. and this week cal state east bay has scheduled two drills simulating a shooting on campus. the first exercise just wrapped up about an hour ago. a second exercise is set for thursday afternoon. csu police along with hayward police officers are taking part. police are boosting patrols in one neighborhood because of problems with vandalism. they say about 20 vehicles had paint splashed on them last night in the area of santa rosa avenue. police say the paint was also on fences, sidewalks and the road. some people are saying that the paint came off easily but others are still trying to assess the damage. police say they've received previous reports of people having their cars scratched and their tires slashed in that area. we now know the name of the man suspected of stabbing a staff member inside glide memorial in san francisco

yesterday. police say 29-year-old lawrie of oakland was arrested on board a munni bus a short time after the attack. he's now facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest and an outstanding warrant. the man was taken to the hospital. they say his injuries are not life threatening. the city of oakland is trying something new to make parking easier when demand for parking spots is at its highest. mayor quan and other city officials unveiled what they call a flexible parking district in mont claire today. prices will be lowered on residential blocks where demand is low and raised on blocks where demand is high. >> we want people to be able to come here and find a place to park when they're ready to come and have dinner or have lunch or do what they need to do without having to leave the community because they can't find convenient parking. >> hourly parking rates at

meters in the flexible parking district range from $1 to $2.50. if that program works it could be expanded to other parts of oakland. it's a controversial plan but it's putting new officers on the streets of san jose. why the police officers association says these community service officers may be in harm's way. heavy rains and severe flooding in arizona. we'll show you flash flood waters sweeping through city streets and neighborhoods and leaving drivers and residents stranded. >> i'm tracking the chance of wet roadways for your morning commute on wednesday. i'll show you if areas that could see it. it makes me happy to go on the computer.

breaking news out of sacramento where a patient is being treated for possible ebola virus. officials say they are treating the patient in an isolation room. and they're taking all the precautions to protect other patients and staff. they el pa -- el emphasize this is a case of possible infection. san jose police say a woman was arrested hours after returning to the scene of a hit- and-run that critically injured

a pedestrians. the driver who hit him had sped away but police say two hours later she returned to the scene. >> there's a variety of reasons why people leave. and certainly the officers will be looking into that. that will be part of the decision making process as to whether charges will be filed. officers are still trying to figure out what led to the collision including how fast the driver was going at the time. less than 24 hours earlier police were along that same stretch of road where a car hit and killed a bicycle rider on sunday and that driver also left the scene. police say the person was in a dark colored honda civic. they believe the car did suffer some damage as a result of the collision. the san jose police department's new training program is triggering controversy. for the first time ever the department is training civilians to handle low priority cars. new at 6:00 tonight, azenith

knit -- smith got a look at the program and found out how the district is planning to deal with the program. >> reporter: these 25 officers beating out 300. >> ever since high school i knew i wanted to be a san jose police officer. >> you guys get the final on thursday. >> reporter: the program is part of the basic investigating and reporting of low property crime where no suspect is around. >> you can't control the crowd. >> reporter: with 54,000 the officers will wear blue uniforms, and ride in ford marked vehicles. these community service officers won't be armed with a gun or handcuffs but they will have this. pepper spray, a flashlight and if they get into trouble they can always radio a police officer. yet critics including the san

jose police officers association say that's not enough training in case a suspect should return. san jose police sergeant andrew kearny disagrees. >> we designed the program so they will not be put in harms way. >> reporter: he's also firing back at those who say these officers are a band aid fix for the real issue of hiring real police officers. >> we're trying to hire as many police officers as we can. but with the current political climate and some things that have happened we just aren't able to do that. >> former police dispatcher knows that too well. >> it's frustrating to have to tell people we don't have anybody available to go to the calls. >> reporter: that's why she and valor are eager to prove that it can be done. >> we're going to be there to help get crime down. >> azenith smith, ktvu news. the trainees are set to graduate from the classroom

this thursday. and then go into three weeks of field training before they hit the streets next month. flash flooding in arizona led to some dramatic rescues today. check out these pictures here. a rescuer climbs into a mini van that was submerged in water in an effort to get the driver to safety. in all, crews were called to help at least a half dozen people who were trapped inside their cars by that flood water. the national weather service says up to 2-inches of rain fell in about an hour in northern phoenix this morning. the storm knock out power to nearly 3,000 homes but fortunately no major injuries have been reported. nothing like that for us. unfortunately. we've got dry conditions to continue through the five day. temperatures are going to warm slightly over today's numbers. these were the highs today. little warmer than yesterday. sunday was kind of chilly. 63 in pacifica. highs tomorrow maybe a degree or two they budge up.

the marine layer is really deep right now. so when i see deep i mean fat and thick. that marine layer is up around 3,000 feet in some places. almost not even an inversion at all. it's so broad that the fog is flowing over the hills and already making its way into some of the inland bay valleys. we're going to see a chilly foggy kind of evening with fog for everyone when you wake up tomorrow morning. the reason for that is our low pressure center the the north: here is where the fog is now. pushing into san francisco. pushing across toward san pablo, toward richmond. fog tomorrow morning just like we had this morning be plenty of coverage. we'll see fog here in the next couple of hours we did have fog earlier in southern alameda. but the idea being this low pressure to the north of us has created a very deep inversion. you can see that when you look at the temperature footprint. this isotherm map. you see the greens and yellows

how far inland they are and it's august. that's a pretty cool footprint. san francisco right now it's 68 degrees. that's a live picture and you're looking obviously no the west. because if you were you would be seeing plenty of fog. san francisco just like today. in terms of temperature. you wake up foggy and you end up pretty much mostly cloudy in san francisco. the forecast as we go into tomorrow then you're looking at 76 in napa. 67 in sausalito, air quality is good. fire danger is down. santa clara valley with good, strong winds cleaning out the atmosphere the wind are blowing in fairfield. blowing over 30 miles per hour. airports had wind up over 25 miles per hour. five day forecast with the bay area weekend in view then. there you go a little bit warmer today. a little warmer as we head toward the end of the week. but it's subtle stuff. this is really similar to what we saw last week. minus all that subtropical moisture. i'll think of something to do every night. trust me i'll come up with
