landed right on all of these cars. >> i woke up to her screaming. >> buildings deemed not safe to enter and people are still without water and power this morning. we have live team coverage of the aftermath of the bay area's biggest earthquake in 25 years. good morning. thank you for waking up with us today. here's a live look at downtown napa. a lot of the damage can be seen here. dozens of buildings are red tagged. that means they are not safe to go inside and that includes this one. many beautiful old buildings with significant damage. all the schools are closed today so crews can go in and inspect those buildings make sure they are safe for the kids. alex savidge is in napa this morning.

he was there yesterday morning as well. just a couple hours after the earthquake hit. he will have more on the extensive damage in the city. good morning, i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. you expect a cool day. >> that is true. we have for us the lows are mainly in the 60s. mainly low clouds. 24 gusts to 28. it's been up to 39 gusts at travis. the water temps are very warm. half monobay 65 degrees. there is that cloud cover

swinging in rapidly. cooler, breezy today. some afternoon sun. cooler. and then 67. we do have problems on the east shore freeway. first i want to take a look at the live picture we have of the drive time here between the carquinez bridge and the maze. it will go up because of a crash. i can move it to the maps heres it is west 80 at central. the backup continues to build pretty soon. we have stop and go traffic out of richmond. it's already slowing out of richmond. the crash west 80 at central. we also want to -- the road is open on the way over to sonoma raceway. it is slow to 121 but all the roads are open. 29 is slow as it normally is.

again those roads are open. napa city streets are closed. westbound 580 livermore very heavy traffic over the altamont pass and getting into dublin. i want to mention the bay bridge toll plaza backed up to the mccarthur maze. northbound 101 san francisco looks good. let's go back to the desk. we continue to follow the very latest developments in the aftermath of that magnitude 6.0 earthquake that hit the bay area. it hit at 3:20 yesterday morning. significant damage has been reported in the napa valley but also in vamp -- to be cd j is

at the vallejo. but first let's go to alex savidge. you're in downtown napa. dozens of buildings have been determined to be too dangerous to enter. and now you have new information from pg&e. >> reporter: all around the downtown area, this is the scene. you can see places have been boarded up. all of them deemed far too dangerous for anyone to go inside at this point. many of those buildings are older and have that

unreenforced masonry that came crumbling down pap down. a lot of buildings with new construction were damaged as well. there will be county and city offices that will be closed today. and there are quite a few businesses in the downtown napa area that was hit hard by the quake including a number of stores that sell wine. as you can imagine we are in the napa valley. they had a lot of their product, a lot of their wine came tumbling off of shelves and it was all destroyed. one business owner says he alone probably lost $100,000 worth of wine. and we also did just get an update a short time ago on the power outage situation in this area. 150 homes are still in the dark this morning. they work hard throughout the night to get the power back on. >> it took training pg&e trains

for this. emergency crews were ready to respond. and we had crews in the area all day and throughout the night. and we've been staging over at the napa county airport. >> reporter: and the other big issue that is concerning county officials here is the school situation. schools are closed today in the napa valley unified school district. that includes schools here in napa and american canyon.

[ inaudible ] assessing how much damage was done in terms of a dollar figure. they cannot put an estimate on that at this point. live in napa alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. emotions are also running high at a napa mobile home park where four homes were burned to the ground. yesterday's earthquake ruptured a gas line and knacked three dozen homes off of their foundation. the quake also ruptured the water line that feeds the park with so with little water pressure fire crews had to tap into another line nearby. they did provide a spaghetti dinner for those that lived in that park. thankfully only two minor injuries are reported. the red cross has opened a second evacuation center to help anyone who does not have a place to stay. one is at the crosswalk

community church. the second is at the florence douglas center. both are open for over night stays. the red cross says at this time they are not accepting any donations of food or clothing. it looks like hundreds of people in napa may not have water for a week after yesterday's big quake. the quake ruptured 60 water pipes and dozens of water mains. as of last night 600 homes still had no water.

you are in vallejo where some of the streets and buildings they are still off limits. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. numerous buildings have been red and yellow tagged. most of the damage is here in the downtown area. they have georgia street. it has been closed off to traffic for the past 24 hours. there are public work crews here on stand by. they are watching the brick building there that you see because they tell me that it is structural unsafe. here is video of that building. this was from yesterday. on the outside it looks all right. but we are told bricks and debris came tumbling down. it's vacant but there are eight residential apartments next door. those people were evacuated.

awnings and broken windows and glass that was throughout the city. >> >> reporter: here is surveillance camera video. you can see the windows broke. most of the instruments did stay in place. damage done at homes and apartments has prompted the red cross to set up a shelter for over night stays. that is located at the florence douglas center. a crane will be brought in sometime today to remove the wall there on the side of that brick building because they tell me it is unsafe. as far as the water situation goes there was 16 water main breaks that happened yesterday

but vallejo water does say that was all taken care of. as of 8:00 p.m. last night. the schools here in vallejo will be open today. this morning, we are expecting several building inspectors to come throughout the city to inspect the buildings. reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. federal emergency officials have flown over the napa area to exam the quake damage. that is a key step to help the area recover. ground level inspection cannot start until it's safe for crews to go inside the buildings. that may be days before that can happen. after that the federal government will decide what it will do for the quake victims. we have more earthquake coverage on our website. you can see the list of buildings that have been deemed too dangerous to enter. and we have several slide shows of the damage right there on our home page at ktvu.com.

welcome back to the morning news. new this morning san francisco police say a man crossing geary boulevard was killed. he was hit by a muni bus. this happened around 1:00 this morning near lion street. police tell ktvu news a man was not in a crosswalk when that bus hit him. his name has not yet been released. police say they will give us more information about what happens later this morning. also new information this morning on the tragic hit and run death of a two-year-old girl in san francisco. the san francisco chronicle says police say the girl's aunt was talking on her cell phone

when she left the child unattended in the middle of mission street. that is when a car hit and killed the little girl. 25-year-old lore sha gauge was charged with felony child endangerment last week. police are still searching for that hit and run driver. back to our coverage of the napa earthquake a 98-year-old church is off limits because of a significant damage to the building. news chopper 2 flew over the first united methodist church. the facade of the church separated from the roof line. we are told a lot of damage was done to the inside of that church as well. our time 16:16. one downtown business in napa that survived a quake turned into a popular gathering spot. the bar was packed most of the night. some were tourists that were heading home after spending the day at the raceway. people that live in napa say they needed a spot to get away after spending all of that time cleaning up. some skate borders in napa

have found use for some of the roads that buckled under the earthquake. the quake caused a makeshift ramp and other obstacles that skateboarders are loving. theory saying partly sunny perfect for skate boarding. right now the street is closed to traffic. but it is open to skate borders. we are not sure when the crews will go out there to fix the road. the big quake in napa hit nearly ten hours before sunday's 49ers preseason game. it did have a direct impact on the fans making the way to the new home of the niners. crews spent most of sunday morning inspecting the the light rail tracks heading into the stadium. that caused 20 minute delays. cal train was still able to provide special service to the game. ace train service to the game was canceled because of extension track inspections. concerns over the quake and possible transit trouble may have effected attendance at yesterday's game as well. there were tens of thousands of

empty seats during the 49ers game. niners ended up with their first preseason victory beating san diego 21-7. sunday's game wases first test of the new turf at levi stadium. jim harbaugh called in for replacement sod after several players found themselves slipping and sliding on the field. the turf used yesterday was a big improvement but still just a temporary solution. there will be a whole new field before the home season opener against the chicago bears on september 14th. time is 6:18. let's get you moving. sal, the east shore. everybody behaving for you? >> i would say not really. there are a couple of cars. the only good thing i can say is there was a noninjury accident so no one was hurt but the car was blocking lanes. let's take a look at the east

shore freeway. you can see the drive time is up to 33mys and now i can scroll to the one i wanted to show you. west 80 at central. this is -- was blocking a lane. the traffic is going to be busy as you drive out of richmond. stretching almost all the way back to hill top. so that is why. let me go back to emphasize. the drive time is 33 minutes and normally it's about 17 minutes. so we are already at double that drive time. let's go to other live pictures bay bridge. you can sees traffic here is backed up for a 25-30 minute delay coming into san francisco. downtown san jose in the silicon valley looks pretty good. you can still jump ahead of the crowd in most of these commutes. >> hold on there a second. >> oh my goodness. >> trying to get information from pam and everything. we have low cloud deck.

solid. there is a system dropping down that is picking that up and moving it locally inland. it's also swinging in cloud cover toward the sierra nevada. it looks like it will fly out of there just as fast as it moved in. setting up a strong delta breeze. 60s on the temps or a few 50s. they are running. they being the lows. running about 24 gusts to 28. there are gusts to 39. 39 miles an hour gusts at travis. 15 concord. 13 out of the west, southwest. a little bit of a southerly breeze. what is new? that continues for most. san jose southeast. livermore has a west. hayward has a west. trying to turn west, southwest. water temps no, this hasn't. matthew tweeted me and said is this elle mean owe? 65 degrees. 63 point rays.

and even bodega bay. 61 degrees. so the water temps are very warm. it is not el nino though. we will focus our attention on hurricane marie. category four. 145 miles an hour winds. it is moving northwest at 12 miles an hour. it will move boom colder water and send up a strong south swell be for us we are keeping an eye on the moisture. we've had tropical clouds since july as you know. one forecast model is very, very strong. i'm bringing that moisture into the bay area. this upcoming weekend it has since backed off. for us it will be a cooler day today. breezy. this looks to be the coolest day of the week. morning low clouds. afternoon sun. temperatures will be in the -- they should be closer to 86 for concord. 87 for livermore. san francisco, oakland though a little closer to average.

die and fremont felt that. a couple in napa got a rude awakening when part of their bed fell on to them. they were pinned beneath their head board and two mirrors. they couldn't get out and neighbors eventually heard them and they got out. hundreds of people in missouri are expected to attend the funeral service for michael brown. the unarmed teenager shot and killed by a police officer. the funeral will be held at friendly temple baptist church. michael brown's father says he appreciates the public support but asks protestors don't rally today. >> all i want is peace while my son is being laid to rest. can you please, please take a day of silence so i can -- so we can lay our son to rest? >> 18-year-old michael brown was shot and killed more than

ktvu channel 2 morning news. monday, august 25th i'm dave clark. >> beautiful old buildings. i'm pam cook. we will get to that top story in a moment. first we want to start you off with weather and traffic. how is the day look something >> cloudy and cooler for many here. system moves into the north. fog bank has no problem making a strong surge. inland the low responsibility for it is right here. up on northeast california near the oregon border and swinging in cloud cover for the sierra nevada. 50s and 60s. awe lot of 10:s on the lows and the sea breeze for many. 65 warm degrees monterey and half-moon bay. with ther temps are running very warm. it may swing in partly cloudy

skies. a cooler breezy to blustery day. afternoon sun for some. but still slightly below coast and bay. here is sal. all right, steve. traffic is going to be busy an interstate 80 westbound. it is very slow this morning because of earlier problems and once again the drive time here is a thing that is usually not that high. 32 minutes. ly show you why. we had an earlier accident here. westbound 80 at central. that accident is gone. but traffic is going to be busy in the area. i left the icon there to show you where the crash was. west 80 at central. the accident was there. it has moved but traffic has backed up into pinole and richmond. you can see traffic begins to slow in hercules. kind of a big commute. all the major ones are open but there are street closures in the city of napa because of building damage you will see in

a moment. and westbound 580 we have a big commute coming out of the livermore valley. quickly to a picture of the bay bridge toll plaza. 2:37 a little bit of slow traffic already. approaching 101 there is an injury crash there. showing you surveillance video from inside a store at vallejo. >> we know the quake was centered near american canyon and a lot of damage has been reported in napa valley, vallejo and american canyon. alex savidge is in downtown napa now. and dozens of buildings are red tagged. >> reporter: yeah a lot of buildings you can can't go into. and a lot of buildings to be

inspected. a lot of businesses damaged here along first street. and also quite a bit of damage. huge chunks of concrete from the facade of this building came crashing down during the earthquake early yesterday morning. this is a building that nearly 100 years old. and you can see the damage that was done here. a lot of cleanup that has yet to billion done. state officials say 100 buildings or so including this one had been red tagged because of the earthquake. all of them too dangerous to enter. and many are older and have that unreenforced masonry. churches and homes have been red tagged as well. california national guard will be doing an aerial survey of all the damage in this area to try to assess exactly what needs to be fixed moving

forward. a lot of cleanup left to be done. there is a bit of good news. the lights are coming back on. pg&e told me all but 150 people now have their power back on here following the earthquake. about 70,000 homes went dark. >> we saw downed power lines. downed power poles. we did have damage throughout the county. both here in napa and sonoma. >> and today all of napa valley unified schools will be closed today. there are no classes in this area. that is because they will have inspectors go into all the schools later on to take a look and see how much damage may have been done to the structures. they will make a decision -- and they will make an announcement at 1:00 this afternoon. and as we bring you back out here live, we are of course in

the napa valley. a lot of wine was lost during yesterday's earthquake. this is a look inside a wine bar here. you can see a bunch of bottles sitting there on the table. the ones that were not thrown from the shelves and destroyed. you can imagine the business owner here and a lot of folks here up and down throughout 1st street will have a lot of cleanup to do throughout the day. it could take several weeks to clean up all the damage done in this area. live until napa alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. two boys and girl clubs in napa will open early today because of the school closures. the napa clubhouse on pueblo avenue and the american canyon clubhouse on benton way will open at 10:00 a.m. and stay hope until 10:00 p.m..

there will be no fee and a membership is not required. all other girls and boy clubs will be closed today. the quake damage was not isolated to napa. the nearby city of vallejo was also hit hard. our ktvu news crew got a first look. at least 40 buildings were damaged. we will have a live record from downtown coming up at the top of the hour. as we told you earlier more than 200 people have been treat maryland. most of the injuries are minor. most people suffered cuts and bruises. >> i fell off of my bed and hit my head on the shelf i have next to my bed. that is how i cut my fore head open and my eye.

>> it has been a very busy day. we are pleased we are working back to normal operations. >> one 13-year-old boy was listed in critical condition. he was hit from debris from a falling chimney. his condition was upgraded from critical to serious. city crews will be busy working today on the damaged roads in napa valley. the earthquake caused significant damage. a large crack spreads right across the road. crews will be working near the corner of white cliff and twin oaks where the shaking broke a water main. >> you have no control. it happened so fast and wow. >> the quake ripped up the blocks of parallel streets with the worse cracking on twin oaks

course. officials say it could be weeks before the napa airport control tower is back open after it was damaged in yesterday's quake. news chopper 2 flew by to check out damage yesterday. however the tower will not be usable until new windows are installed. that is likely to take several weeks. the airport will remain open with pilots talking directly to each other the way they do when the tower is closed at night. the last major quake to hit napa was 14 years ago. about 200 buildings were damaged. a fireplace collapsed on him. despite only giving a 20% chance of survival, he made a

full recovery. and one of the deadliest quakes to hit the bay area october 1989 a 6.9 magnitude quake centered near santa cruz. 63 people died. . more than 3700 were hurt. rush hour traffic was lighter than normal. we're also following developing news out of weaverville where about 150 homes have been evacuated. the flames continued through 500 homes. there could be more evacuations. strong winds quickly spread the flames about 650 acres. weberville is just at the base

welcome back. 6:44. et quake even stronger than the one that hit napa over night. there are reports of damage to buildings and at least two injuries. that shaking was felt as far away as the capitol city of lima. they are cleaning up at several napa wineries after yesterday's quake. christien kafton is live in napa now to tell us how some of the winery damage could effect

the area's economy. >> reporter: business owners are still cleaning up after that big quake. emergency workers are asking visitors to stay out of the downtown area while that cleanup is under way. you can see why again. you can see the damage to the facade of the hotel and the debris that is still on the ground. if you take a look here, you can see the front of the hotel is is closed to pedestrian traffic. but tourism is still a big business in napa county and businesses are encouraging people to visit as much as possible. wineries in the area are also cleaning up. bottles fell to the floor and broke but the tasting room is open at the pearl restaurant here in napa. >> one thing we've been really lucky is the power came back. >> oh my gosh. >> the power came back on which is such a release.

i'm getting ahead of myself. low clouds swinging around. they have a few high clouds there. but there is a lot of low clouds there. and there is a rather strong delta breeze and that will keep temperatures on the cool side. even though the lows are way up. westerly at oakland. westerly at concord. west at the napa airport. west at ashorely breeze. 65 monterey. 65 half monobuy bay. it's not el nino. we just hod a south breeze along the coast since it seems like since the beginning of july. we can't get that northwest wind. hurricane marie has to keep an eye on this for later in the

week. 450 miles from cabo san lucas. it's moving northwest at 12. one forecast model was very bullish. tapping into that and driving in towardous. it has since backed off. but i'm not giving up on it yet. it would make sense since we had tropical moisture. mostly clear after we get that cloud deck to burn off. it could be a slow process for a few today. cooler, breezy. morning clouds. afternoon sunshine for some. a lot of fog around the area. 60s and 70s for many. the inland temps are by far the collection. and then near average on wednesday. time is 6:51. we continue ktvu team coverage of the napa quake.

good morning. welcome back. time is 6:54. these are live pictures. news chapper if t flying over downtown napa for us. look at that quake damage right in front of us. as many as 100 of some of those historic buildings have been red tagged. many city and county offices are closed today. later today the california national guard will do a survey of the damage. coming up at the top of the hour. meantime california's early warning system for earthquakes it did its job. i don't know if you've had your coffee yet. but that alert give us ten seconds of an alert. >> earthquake. earthquake. light shaking in three seconds. >> that will wake you up.

the system is called shake alert. it sends that information to some government agencies and businesses around the state. the state law that was passed last year requires california to set up a statewide early alert system. researchers at uc berkeley says the program is separate from a lack of funding they say they need $80 million to expand the system. and they hope those changes can lead to a warning 50 seconds before the shaking begins. the cleanup will continue today at a napa apartment complex where the roof collapsed on to many cars. at least four carports were damaged yesterday at the charter oaks apartment. just to the west of downtown napa. one woman who lives at the complex says she saw her roof come down. >> the earthquake had just come and i saw the roof collapse. you could hear cracking and a big boom. it landed on all of these cars.

>> some people still without their car then and for awhile. it's unclear how many cars were damaged. it does appear some of the smaller cars may have been spared if they were parked between taller vehicles that kept the roof from crushing them. there is a lot of buzz about the quake on social media. the #napaquake it started trending yesterday morning. people were using it to report damage and injuries. others are citing the moment the quake hit and say they were afraid to sleep. and there were also tweets about very different issues including iraq and syria. social media experts say it's not unusual for people to hijack a trending topic and use it for their own agenda. pet owners are still looking for cats and dogs that got spooked and took off. they have postings from people that are looking for their
