standard. on 580 westbound that is another commute that shows me things are better than usual. we do have a little bit of slow traffic. you will see crowded conditions. 6:02 let's go back to the desk. we begin with our continuing coverage of the napa earthquake. building inspectors say the problems are far from over. this historic home shifted off its foundation just yesterday. it's among the growing number of buildings that are deemed too dangerous to enter. some business owners are also

angry their buildings are also red tagged even though they are structurally safe. tara moriarty is joining us now from downtown napa where the unsafe building is putting where another unsafe building is putting those businesses at risk. >> reporter: contractors and engineers will be out here soon to try to strengthen the damaged buildings like this one you see behind me here. right across the street from the courthouse. it was never reenforced before the quake. there are buildings like them all over the bay area. on a list, waiting to be retro fitted. the problem is the city is concerned that the brown street building pose a hazard to a string of small businesses that border them. the lawyer whole owns the brown street buildings has been toad for years to retro fit but hasn't. >> the idea of spending a lot of money on that when it's not

necessary doesn't make a lot of sense to me. my buildings has been through earthquakes. >> pretty much everyone on this block has been retro fitted and spent a significant amount of money on that. >> reporter: silver believes this city the over reacting. he has plans to expand and remodel all of the buildings. he says it's a timetable the city agreed to. he says he's being cast as a bad guy. live from napa i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >> napa's historic downtown courthouse was also badly damaged on sunday's quake and may be shut down for the next two years. repair costs could hit $20

million. it was built back in the 1870s. the cases normally handled at the landmark courthouse have been transferred across the street to the more modern napa county courthouse. we have do have more information about how you can help just log on to our website. a wild fire in southern santa clara county is 50% contained this morning. at least 80 acres have burped on both sides of highway 162. the chp says the fire was caused by a crash yesterday afternoon on the highway. that is a well known area. an eastbound traffic control one lane is in effect right now. no buildings have burned. no injuries have been reported so far. a man is fighting for his life this morning after being shot in antioch. this happened last night at 7:30 near the intersection of 17th and c streets.

at this point there is no word on suspects or what led up to the gunfire. bail has been set at $1 million for san francisco man suspected of killing his girlfriend. 48-year-old jewel appeared in court yesterday but did not enter a plea. he killed 42-year-old mary on tuesday morning. firefighters found her unresponsive after responding to a medical call. they say the circumstances were suspicious so they called police and police say she died of blunt force trauma. she has watched as four gallons of water every hour leaked into a gutter. nancy says she has called the city. they told her the broken valve is not a priority because it's not causing property damage. >> i feel as a citizen i've

to addressing another issue. >> maryland gave a tearful interview yesterday saying she is homeless and suffers from what she calls whistle blower trauma syndrome. she is accused of trying to sneak aboard multiple flights and then arrested at a phoenix airport. it can recommend psychological evaluations but cannot demand one without a court order. they had planned to wake up this morning in hawaii but instead they are waking up in oakland. yesterday morning passengers boarded an hawaiian airlines flight bound for maui. about an hour into the flight they had mechanical problems forcing them to turn around and land in oakland. a high school football coach is accused of stealing thousands of dollars meant for his team.

police near sacramento searching for a man that crashed in a u-haul truck. that one into a house in citrus heights. the truck stopped a couple feet away from a sleeping four-month- old baby in her crib. the driver of the u-haul took a bicycle out of the back of the truck and road away. bay area law enforcement agencies increasing their dui patrols for the labor day weekend. 2 investigates exams extra efforts to keep repeat drunk drivers off the roads. law enforcement officials are tracking what is called the dui hot list. the dmv gives the license numbers of dui repeat offenders to the police. the police then do the leg work. tracking the names, addresses, photos, and vehicle descriptions of drivers likely to reoffend. >> most have multiple dui conditions, multiple suspensions on their driver's

or the day off. i think. this is a look at the bay bridge. we have lighter than usual conditions. i know this has something to do with the holiday coming up. some people take four days. this happens all the time. ahead of major holidays. you might see people stretching it out on tuesday as well or even the entire week. as you get up to westbound 92 as you head out to the high- rise, it's a ten minute drive across the span. no trouble getting over to 101 and the silicon valley. we haven't talked about the south bay a lot. and you know why? it's good traffic there. 101, 85, and 280 are all doing very well. we don't have a lot of slow traffic at all. hopefully it will stay this way. here is someone that is up at and at 'em steve paulson. >> i have no choice. falling apart tropical storm marie sending in some of the clouds. most of those earlier clouds were up to the north bay. moving pretty quick. you can see the projection here. it looks like it will take most of these to the north. south bay looks to be mostly sunny here. once any low cloud deck burns off. it moves into the colder water and high cloud deck is about all we get left of it. 50s and 60s on the temps. i doubt these move too much because everyone is reporting cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. low 60s foster city is in there. not much of a difference. the 24 gust to 31 at travis that is a difference from 24 hours ago. it was not that strong. mainly a westerly component for most locations. sfo, even hay ward. with a puff of a northwest. 61 up in ukiah. 59 monterey. 71 down in san diego. you can see the higher clouds

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. we are following developing news out of chicago at o'hare airport. at least 14 people were hurt. four of them seriously after a shuttle bus hit a median early this morning. police say the bus was headed to departure terminal. more than a dozen ambulances

were sent to the scene. traffic started to back up and people got out of their cars and taxis and walking to the terminals to try to catch their flight. yesterday at a tech conference in san francisco hillary clinton made a comment about the shooting death of michael brown. she says she identifies with the parents of an 18-year-old says as a mother losing a child is any parents greatest fear. clinton also addressed the protests and violence that followed the teen shooting by a white police officer. >> nobody wants to see our streets look like a war zone. not in america. we are better than that. >> clinton made the comments at a technology conference. 135 students from a school in a tenderloin in san

customers without running water in napa. time is 6:34. as the cleanup continues, napa waste crews are busy hauling away debris from sunday's quake. as of yesterday they collected 2.6 million pounds of debris. now there are three locations where waste can still be dropped off. there at first and laurel streets. the last flores community center and third street. if you had earthquake damage, you can get help cleaning up. tomorrow they almost pass out free supplies. including multipurpose cleaners, brooms, dust pans, mops, buckets and more. employees will pass them out at the napa parking lot on big ranch road. we have more information on how you can help out with earthquake recovery efforts. go to ktvu.com click on the

north bay tab. apple always tries to create a little air of mystery ahead of the company announcement. the next one is two weeks away and a bigamistly this -- and a big mystery this time around is a big white building on campus. have you been able to pry the secret out of anyone? >> reporter: i have not. when i try to get next to the building the security guard asked me if i had a bracelet. i did not. i don't know what that is. it's a building that is going up in the middle of campus. crews are busy. they have been working around the clock trying to have this place ready for apple's next product launch which is an event that will happen in less than two weeks from now. here's an invitation that went out from the company. it will happen next on september 9th. no specifics offers.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. if you are heading out of town for the long holiday weekend you can expect more company. brian flores is in berkeley this morning with the factors that are expected to make this the busiest labor day for travel in the last six years. brian. >> reporter: good morning. there is a lot of different reasons why. it has to do with gas prices actually. even though the national average is lower here in the bay area it is higher. as we take a look at commuters along the east shore freeway. some we spoke with say no matter what the prices are, people need a vacation. and the predicted numbers from aaa are pointing to that. more than 34 million americans will travel more than 50 miles this weekend.

86% of those travelers plan on hitting the road before ends or begins. people still just want to get away. >> i would think that people want to you know cut loose and have a good time and get out of town and there is no better way to do that than going on a three-day weekend. i see it. i mean i don't know why it would be so much more than last year or two, but maybe people have more money than they did the last couple of years. >> and people are also traveling in the air. aaa says air fares have risen 2%. costing around $219. that is up from $214. but as we take it back out here live, not everyone hitting the roads. coming up we will speak to one person on why he thought traveling this weekend and we will also provide another

statistic from aaa from the same report that talks about traveling and your debt. brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:44. it's been just about a year since the new eastern span of the bay bridge opened to traffic for the first time. the $6.4 billion project has had more than its share of problems. there has been broken bolts and rods design and maintenance problems. cal tran still dealing with those issues while completing other bridge projects. that includes finishing the bike path to treasure island. >> in order to do that, we have to have that portion of the old bridge removed in order to extend the bike path. >> cal tran is also finishing up landscaping at the eastern landing and other smaller projects. if you live in an area that still allows the use of plastic grocery bags, that may soon

from severe weather photographer. for us we have a little cooler pattern today. high clouds. most of those north bay. south bay looks to be mostly sun isny. the clouds are what is left of what was hurricane marie still kind of floating around there. the fog banks a little thicker here making a stronger push. 59 half-moon bay. 59 novato. fair field always the key. 50s and 60s some of the higher elevations. but calistoga is 54. 56 petaluma. had gusts to 30 plus out at travis. a little south wind at concord. westerly oakland and westerly napa. water temps are still mild to warm. if we can get a northwest breeze we can drop these back into the 50s.

welcome back. time is 6:52. developing news from britain. britain's top security official just raised the terror threat level there from substantial to severe. that is the second highest threat level and means a terror attack is highly likely. officials say there is no evidence that an attack is eminent. they have been concerned about british citizens going to iraq and syria to fight alongside isis and coming back to carry out attacks in england. just a couple days ago police announced 200 of the fighters may billion back in london. meantime president obama says he's not ready to authorize air strikes against isis targets in syria. at a news conference yesterday, the president said he has asked the pentagon to come up with options the u.s. military could take in syria but he said news reports that air strikes in syria are already in the works. they are not accurate. >> i don't want to put the cart

in ferguson, missouri. officials told the mercury news it wasn't worth the potential damage to the department's image. two men are behind bars in a sonoma county board accused of a shooting in windsor. the gunfire yesterday morning led to an air and ground search that shut down roadways and put several local schools on lockdown. sheriffs deputies say the suspects shot a man and dropped him off outside of a market on windsor river road. he is expected to survive. officers arrested the two men after a brief chase. they are questioning another possible suspect. time is 6:55. police in san jose say a woman found dead in a car parked outside of a church was stabbed to death. passer by called police about 11:00 yesterday morning after seeing the woman in a car in a parking lot outside grace church of evergreen. the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. the woman had no apparent connection to the church. it was the 26th homicide of the

year in san jose. the santa claire ram county sheriffs office is looking for answers about another deceased woman found yesterday west of morgan hill. the badly burned body was found along a busy road by a couple of drivers. they spotted smoke near oak glen avenue. they got out of their cars and found the body about 30 feet from the road. this case is being treated as a homicide. cal osha is investigating the death of a san francisco public works employee that was hit and killed on the job. it happened yesterday morning on consistent street. we are told the victim 52-year- old alvin andrews but one of several workers picking up trash along the street when he was hit by a crew truck. initial reports indicate that andrews may have slipped and fallen in front of the truck. that truck driver has been
