"mornings on 2" begins right now. good morning. we are live in napa, where tension is growing among business owners after a single red-tagged building is creating a domino effect impacting the surrounding businesses. tara moriarty is up there this morning. coming up in a couple of minutes, she's gonna tell us the reason the decision a property owner made before the earthquake is now having widespread consequences on a lot of his fellow business owners. thank you for joining us. it's friday, august 29th. i'm pam cook in for tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's talk about your

weather and traffic. steve knows everything about it. >> i hope so. we have a lot of high clouds and fog. a little change in the pattern. the high clouds coming up from what was hurricane marine. more of those over the north bay. there's plenty off the coast that will start to work their way over. a partly to mostly cloudy morning. 50s, 60s on the temperatures. these are all very, very close. la honda, but 64 from menlo park, foster city. the breeze is the key. 24, 31. as long as that holds, it will be cooler out to vacaville. all the way out to vacaville. westerly at napa, even a westerly component. concord, sfo, livermore, even san jose has had a northwest. but the higher clouds could take a few more degrees off the highs especially if you go mostly cloudy and it sticks around. drizzle out there. morning drizzle. 80s for some. low 90s for others. 60s, 70s by the water. here's sal. >> we're looking at a commute where traffic is lighter.

noticeably lighter than usual as you drive through the bay area at the macarthur maze. it looks pretty good. this is probably what we have for days to come. might see lighter than usual commute on tuesday after the labor day holiday. i want to mention that traffic is looking good at the toll plaza. there has not been a real backup there. it's about an eight, ten-minute drive into san francisco. san francisco has heavy partially and that's because of an earlier crash northbound 101. but mostly because 280 extension is closed from 101 to king street. everyone is on 101 and 101 is backed up now from about silver avenue heading up to cesar chavez. southbound 101 is open. and so is southbound 280 from king street heading out of the city downtown area. back to the desk. we begin with our continuing coverage of the napa

earthquake. building inspectors say the historic downtown courthouse was badly damaged in sunday's quake and now could be shut down for the next two years. repairs could cost as much as $20 million to the building which was built back until 1870s. all cases that are usually handled at the landmark courthouse have now been transferred across the street to the more modern napa county courthouse. some business owners in napa are upset, though, because their buildings are red tagged even though they are structurally down. tara moriarty joins us with more. tara? >> reporter: a lot of people are not happy. contractors and engineers should be out here sometime this morning trying to fix the damaged buildings. you can see the one behind me. this was never retrofitted, this building on brown street. there are buildings like them all over the bay area the on the list waiting to be retrofitted but sometimes the

quake hits first. the problem, there are a string of small businesses on the back side of the building. among them the pizzeria and hen rip's. their owners were forced to turn away customers yesterday because the city red tagged them. that's despite the fact they've been retrofitted. the attorney has been told to re retrofit but hasn't. >> he's jeopardizing everyone. he didn't want to retrofit. >> i was pleading with the city this morning not to red tag him and i was arguing this doesn't make any sense. >> reporter: silver says that he has plans to expand and remodel all of the buildings and do the retrofit work then. he says it's a timetable that the city agreed to. he says that he's being cast as the bad guy but businesses on the brink of a lucrative labor day weekend want to open and

want a lesson learned. now the goal will try to be to get the businesses open tonight. live from napa, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. napa building inspectors say the problem downtown is one of many across the city. they say this historic pink victorian home on oak street actually shifted off its foundation just yesterday. it's among the number -- growing number of buildings near the epicenter that have been ruled too dangerous to enter. the city of napa has now red tagged 170 buildings in the past five days. we have more information about how you can help with earthquake recovery efforts. you can log onto our website. ktvu.com. and click on the north bay tab. 7:06. a wildfire in southern santa clara county, it's 50% contained right now. at least 80 acres have burned on both sides of highway 152 east of gilroy. the chp says the fire was caused by a crash yesterday afternoon on the highway near

kay casa de fruta. no buildings have burned. no injuries reported. a man is fighting for his life after being shot last night in antioch. it happened near 17th and c streets. police found a wounded man lying on the street. he was rushed to the hospital where he's listed in critical condition. at this point, no word on suspects or what led up to the shooting. they had planned to wake up this morning in hawaii but instead they are in oakland. yesterday morning, passengers boarded a hawaiian airlines flight at mineta san jose airport bound for maui. about an hour into the flight, mechanical problems forced the plane to turn around and land in oakland. the passengers were given hotel rooms and their flight was rescheduled for the morning. we're checking in with oakland airport to see if they are on their way to hawaii yet. we're following developing news from o'hare international airport in chicago. told but this a short time ago. at least 14 people were hurt,

four of them seriously after a shuttle bus hit a median early this morning. police say the bus was about a half a mile from one of the terminals. traffic started to back up. some people started to get out of the their cars and taxis to walk to the terminals to catch their flights. what the airport says is the busiest travel day for this big holiday weekend. a high school football coach in solano county is accused of stealing thousands of dollars intended for his steam. parents and players of vanden high school say the money was supposed to pay for equipment the kids can't afford. this is youtube video of the coach. this was during a 2012 interview. he was arrested and booked into jail and later released on bail. he's not commenting on these accusations but his wife says lies are being spread about him. >> people do this. he's coached there for 21 years. this is his thanks.

>> the players they are only spaying they are -- saying they are surprised by the charges. the school district is concerned and is investigating. the coach has been placed on leave. happening today, california expected to become the first state in america to ban plastic grocery bags. state lawmakers are expected to give final approval to the controversial measure after a long and heated debate. environmentalists strongly support the ban. they say discarded plastic bags kill marin life. but bagmakers say the ban will cost their industry hundred of jobs. this ban would take effect next year. state lawmakers would follow the lead of counties and cities. a mysterious building is going up in cupertino. as usual, apple is not saying much about this. so we sent alex savidge down to the mystery building to see what he could find out.

anything yet, alex? >> reporter: no one is allowed to get close to the building on the de anza college campus. i walked up to the fence behind us and the guard politely asked me to back away. she told me i was too close. this is the building here behind us. the mystery building that has a lot of apple fans buzzing this morning in the middle of the deanza college campus. it's a three-story struck that's been set up here. crews are working around the clock to get ready for apple's upcoming product launch that's less than two weeks away. let me show you the invitation that's adding to the mystery here. it was sent out yesterday, a big announcement happening on september 9th. no specifics here. the invitation simply reads, "wish we could say more." but the location is certainly significant. it was 30 years ago when steve jobs unveiled the first macintosh computer inside the flint center here. what's unclear, is why apple

needs to put up this temporary building next to the flint center. during the unveiling, tech insiders are expecting them to show off the iphone 6 with a larger screen and possibly the so-called eye watch, the wearable computer. they expect this to be the largest product launch ever. it appears the company is gearing up for quite a big crowd. security is tight around thissing about white building, the mystery building. security guards aren't letting anyone get close to the place and everyone is tight-lipped about what might happen inside. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. good at creating hype. so is google. google has launched product wing. that's the name for a secret product. they've made 30 successful deliveries for people in the cattle country so far. the unmanned aircraft takes off and lands and hovers using four

welcome back to "mornings on 2." it is now 7:15. police near sacramento looking for a man who crashed a u-haul truck into a home. it's an incredible story. it happened at 5:30 yesterday morning in citrus heights. the truck crashed a few feet from a 4-month-old baby sleeping in her crib. she was not hurt. but witnesses say the driver of that u-haul truck took a bicycle out of the back of the truck and rode off. bay area law enforcement agencies are increasing dui patrols for the labor day weekend. 2 investigates examines extra efforts to keep repeat drunk drivers off the roads. law enforcement frills are tracking what's called the dui hot list. the dmv provides the license

numbers of dui repeat offenders. officers then do the leg work to find the names, addresses, photos and vehicle descriptions of drivers likely to reoffend. >> most of them have multiple dui convictions and suspensions on their driver's licenses for convictions for driving on a suspended list. >> the list is private but the people on it know they are being watched. they've received letters identifying them as repeat offenders an warning them of severe criminal penalties if they drive. the nfl has tough new penalties for players involved in domestic violence. first-time offenders will be suspended for six games. repeat offenders may be banned for life. the tough new penalties came after the nfl got a lot of criticism for the two-game suspension given to ray rice. he was involved in a domestic violence case earlier this year. >> he definitely needs to go sit down and think about that.

that ain't right. >> i got my grandson here. they are looking for role models. i think when we have players do those kinds of things, it sends the wrong message. >> ktvu news got those reactions last night. the nfl's new domestic violence policy takes effect immediately. >> the raiders' rookie quarterback derrick carr made his case to be the starter for the season opener a week from sunday. he completed 11 of 13 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns including this one. raiders beat the settle seahawks. can you believe, that 41-31 last night. raiders' quarterback matt schaub didn't play. he was resting a sore elbow. the coach says the team has three guys that can be starting quarterbacks. he will have matt shaw, he will throw on monday just to see how his arm is looking. jim harbaugh will decide which quarterback will back up

kaepernick. gabbert through a pass last night but was just 4 of 11 for 60 yards and then josh johnson came in. he was 14 for 17 for 135 yards and three touchdowns. the 49ers ended their exhibicks season with a 40-13 win over the houston texans. now, tut had a chance to go behind the scenes at the 49ers' new home in santa clara. all access pass levi stadium, it was due to air for you live last sunday but we pushed it back because of coverage of the napa earthquake. you can watch it this sunday at 11:00 p.m. the woman known as the serial stowaway is speaking from a jail in phoenix. she said she doesn't sneak on planes because she likes to travel. she wants to make a point. >> my question is why has the agovernment allowed me to get pass security points?

why is the government allowing that to happen portraying me as a potential threat to security as opposed to addressing another issue. >> 62-year-old marilyn hartman gave a tearful rambling interview yesterday saying she's homeless and suffers from what we callses whistle-blower trauma syndrome. she's accused of trying to sneak on board multiple flights without a ticket in the bay area and then was arrested at a phoenix area earlier this week. the jail says it can recommend psychological evaluations but cannot demand one without a court order. a photo has emerged of a park ranger drunk driving in humboldt county. you can see he's asleep. that's a beer can on his lap. he was packed on the avenue of the giants. the person who took the photo tried to wake up ranger but couldn't and called 911. chp arrested him for dui and the state park stripped him of his peace officer status and

put him on administrative leave. >> and now pam cook is talking about him. we're talking about sal. friday morning, traffic lighter than usual. >> yeah, it's because we have a holiday, as you know. labor day, the last hurrah for summer for many and people are taking long weekends. you can see by looking at the traffic, the carquinez bridge, the macarthur maze commute on 80 has stayed steady at about 20 minutes which is pretty good for this time of the morning. you can see that traffic is just moderate coming down into the berkeley area. we also might see some lighter that than usual traffic on tuesday after the holidays. people might want to get one more day out of this labor day weekend. you can see the traffic is light at the bay bridge toll plaza. this is exactly why 280 in san francisco was closed this weekend between 101 and king street northbound. they are doing some repair work and they figured this was a good time to do it when traffic

volumes were light. as we look at the nimitz freeway, northbound and southbound 880, the traffic continues to look good. there are no major problems on the highway. the traffic is looking good heading south into hayward. let's go to steve. >> beautiful sunrise for many. if you don't have the fog because the higher clouds from what was once category 5 hurricane marie, it's falling apart, sending in these clouds. real quick, leslie aguilar said you never mention rodeo. why is that? i love rodeo. i just don't get any information. if you send information, i would be happy to mention it. the high clouds are right there. we're gonna go mostly cloudy for a while. you can send me sunrise pictures if you want. carrie just did. i know she's out towards benicia and temperatures are 50s and 60s. it's gonna be a cool day. the cloud cover will take a few degrees off the highs from yesterday when we had 90s

inland again. 50s, 60s. really not moving. fairfield's breeze has been roaring 21 to 31. that's a signature of a cooler pattern. napa, oakland, even livermore has a puff of a westerly. chloe from clearlake sent a beautiful picture. nice shot of clearlake with partly cloudy skies. drizzle in there. higher clouds. it will be breezy. 60s, 70s, 80s to near 90. again, the high clouds may take a few degrees off these. but if you get any sun, the humidity factor will be higher as well. 86 walnut creek. 90 livermore. pleasanton. 88 degrees. 81 san jose. more sun to the south. higher clouds look like they are favoring areas to the north. and -- a few on the peninsula, 71 san bruno. daly city 66. been a couple of reports of some drizzle around or mist as well. a lot of high clouds. that will take us into a cooler pattern for the weekend. it does look warmer on monday. two americans died fighting

welcome back to "mornings on 2." 7:25. 135 students from a school in the tenderloin in san francisco, they had a field trip. it was just down the street. but it seemed like a lifetime away. the kids walked from their school, the san francisco city academy to at&t park, a mile and a half through san francisco's toughest streets. most students had never been to a major league baseball game

before. >> we're here. >> they live in the city. a lot of times they don't make it pass the one-mile block they live in. this is an awesome opportunity for them to get out and see the world around them. >> the field trip was sponsored by lefty o'doul's kids' foundation. they arranged for tickets and lun. and then the giants gave them the perfect end, they won. america's newest tennis star lost. in the first round, she became the first 15-year-old since 1996 to win a match at the u.s. open. she did win the second set last night but was overcome in the third. the crowd is behind her. some fans were sitting in their seats at the court for hours just so they could see cc play.

good morning. labor day weekend just about to kick off for many people. that means hitting the road. ktvu's brian flores is looking at how travel is hitting your wallet. the factors that are expected to make this the busy weekend in six years.

good morning i'm pam cook. >> i'm dave clark. we have a low cloud deck and a high deck. it was hurricane, category 5, marie falling apart sending in a lot of the higher clouds. we have a beautiful sunrise, thanks to the beautiful pictures. sp weather you can also facebook. some of that fog might be slow to burn off. 60s and temperatures on the 50s. these are all really close. north bay, coast, inland. all of these are signs along with the higher clouds of a little bit cooler pattern here. fog, sun, clouds drizzle for a few. misty. the breeze has picked up. it's out of the west. 60s, 70s and more upper 80s now. here's sal. we're looking at a nice- looking drive this morning on a friday. a lot of people don't go on the friday before labor day whether they work from home or perhaps they are on the road for their trip. it's a nice drive from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze and we do have a lot of light traffic at the

toll plaza of the bay bridge as well. you can see it here. traffic is moving along nicely coming into san francisco. no major trouble here. no trouble on the san mateo or dumbarton bridge as you move over to the fremont area, 880 has been nice. even into the livermore valley which is notorious for a bunch of slow traffic. it's very light. while the roads are light now if you are headed out of town later this afternoon, you can expect a lot of people. ktvu channel 2 reporter brian flores is live in berkeley with the reasons that this labor day weekend is expected to be the busiest for travel since 2008. brian? >> reporter: hi, sal. good morning. there are a lot of different factors into why that is. it may not seem that why in terms of gas prices in the bay area. nationwide, gas prices are lower. as we take a look at commuters, perhaps getting to work before the long week. some we spoke to say no matter what the prices are, people need a vacation. the predicted numbers from aaa,

they say 34 million americans will travel more than 50 miles or more this weekend. they also say that 86% of those travelers are planning on hitting the road for one last road trip before the summer ends or school begins. what makes this interesting, even though gas prices are averaging around 3 hoey 41 nationwide, 4.01 in san francisco, hotel rates are up 6% from last year, people want to get away. one person said he's planning on staying home this year. but he understands why people would want to leave. >> i think people have gotten out of the scary phase of why sop traveling and this and that -- stop traveling and this and that. if the gas is $4 a gallon, we still want to have fun and travel. it's another way to release stress, have fun. you can't keep yourself tied in. you have to get out and travel and live a normal life. >> reporter: now, aaa says there will be a 1% increase in air travel. they say airfares have risen 2%

with the average ticket costing around $219. that's up $5. aaa says with more people traveling, it's a good sign for the economy as more people are headed back to work. what's also interesting, aaa says while more americans are optimistic about their financial situation, they are more willing to take on debt. they are finding more people are willing to use credit cards instead of disposable income to fund their travel prance this -- plans this year. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. the long weekend has also become a holiday when retailers advertise big sales. 65% of consumers plan to go shopping during the long holiday weekend. that's up from last year. some of the especially good deals include major appliances, new clothes, somer clothing and patio furniture. the chp investigating a late-night motorcycle crash in

oakland, a woman cyclist was killed. this happened about 11:00 p.m. on northbound 880 where the free intersects with westbound 80 east of the toll plaza. a woman in her 30s crashed her motorcycle into the white plastic lane dividers. at this point, it doesn't april peer any other vehicles were involved -- appear any other vehicles were involved. >> they were able to look over the rider and state that the rider at that time was deceased. >> the chp closed several lanes on northbound 880 right after the crash. those lanes have since reopened. investigators say alcohol was not a factor. if you have any information about the crash, contact the oakland chp. meantime, the redwood city police department will conduct a motorcycle safety enforcement operation today. they will be out patrolling areas popular with motorcyclists in areas where motorcycle crashes happen a lot. they are gonna crack down on drivers and on riders who are

speeding, who are making illegal u-turns or maybe under the influence of drugs or alcohol. san jose's police department says it will return a military vehicle it received from the u.s. government. it's like a vehicle like this one. it was built to survive explosive teeb vices in afghanistan and iraq but according to the mercury news, the police department plans to return the vehicle after national backlash about the militarization of police departments in the wake of the deadly police shooting in fus, missouri. officials told the mercury news it wasn't worth the dge to the department's image. a woman found in a dhar was parked outside of a church was stabbed to death. a passerby called police after seeing a woman inside a car in a parking lot outside of dwras church on ketman -- grace church on ketman. the church's pastor said the woman had no apparent connection to the church. >> knew it wasn't associated

with anything that happens here. no relationship to our programs and the people who participate in our programs. >> the woman's name has not been released. no arrests have been made. it's san jose's 26th homicide of the year. the santa clara county sheriff's office is looking for answers about another deceased woman found yesterday west of morgan hill. the badly burned body was found along a busy road. they spotted smoke near oakland avenue. they got out of their cars and found the body about 20 to 30 feet from the road. investigators say the body was burned beyond recognition. they are treating the case as a homicide. 7:37. it happened again. second time in less than a week. a flight was diverted after passengers started fighting over a reclined seat. now, this flight was heading from miami to paris on wednesday when it made an unscheduled stop in boston. police say a man became angry

when the passenger in front of him reclined her seat. a crew member tried to calm the man down but two air marshals on the flight intervened. the man was arrested, and then he was taken to the hospital because of a preexisting health problem. he was arraigned at the hospital on a charge of interfering with a flight crew. on sunday, you may remember, united airlines flight was diverted to chicago after two passengers on board argued over reclining a seat. in willow glen, people are saying the city is wasting water. one woman says for almost a month now she's been watching as four gallons of water every hour leaked into a gutter. nancy flurky says she's called the city. they told her the broken valve is not a priority because it's not causing property damage. >> i feel as a citizen i've been doing my part. >> the city council came out just the other day about what you must have any leaks at a househow old repaired within

five days. now we're here with a city leak that's been 28 days. >> now, miss flurky created the sign counting the days the water keeps flowing through the streets. they say the leak can't be mixed because other utilities have to be notified. a water company spokesman says no water company has zero leakage. he says san jose's leak rate is 7%, less than half of the national average. a high school teacher in newark has been reprimanded after she posted tweets about her summer school students. "i already want to stab some kids. is that bad? 19 more days." now, the tweets by the history teacher, hodges were published in the san jose mercury news. while parents and fellow teachers were shocked, many students expressed support for the teacher. >> maybe she did get mare carried away but i feel like

all of the teachers have the right to express themselves. >> kind of disheartening to hear that a teacher would say things like that. >> hodges told the mercury news she never expected anyone to take seriously what she posted. they've taken appropriately disciplinary steps and confirming that she's still teaching but her twitter account has been taken down. a santa rosa mother accused of choking a boy she thought was bullying her daughter will not be charged. delia bratcher-garia said she told a boy to stop bullying her daughter. the boy claims she choked him. yesterday, the prosecutor said they will not fire charges. he said they received different stories from different witnesses. the santa rosa mom said she's happy to have her name cleared. some napa business owners are seeing red this labor day weekend. in the next hour of "mornings on 2," the reason they are losing a lot of money this

on 2." 7:43. we're coming up on the first anniversary of the new bay bridge. the new eastern span has now been tested by 12 months of traffic in its first big earthquake days ago. the 6.4 billion-dollar eastern span has had more of its spare than trouble. there have been broken bolts and rods and major cost overruns. caltrans is dealing with that along with finishing the bike path all the way to treasure island. caltrans is also finishing up the landscaping at the eastern landing and completing a number of small projects on the main span. we're following developing news within the last hour. britain's top security official raised the terror threat in britain from substantial to severe. that's the second highest threat level in means of terror

recruitment video posted by the militant group al-shabaab. the fbi contacted troy's mother in 2009 telling her her son might be in danger. a few weeks after that, she got word that troy had been killed. two men are behind bars in the sonoma county jail this morning accused of a shooting in windsor. the gunfire yesterday morning led to an air and ground search that shut down roads and put several local schools on lockdown. sheriff's deputies say the suspects shot a man, then dropped him off outside of a market on windsor river road. he's expected to survive. but officers arrested the two men after a brief chase and they are questioning another question suspect. and cal/osha is now investigating the death of a san francisco public works employee who was hit and killed on the job. it happened yesterday morning on quint street in the bayview district. we're told that the victim, 52- year-old alvin andrews was one of several workers picking up trash along the street when he was hit by a crew truck.

5:00. and that's putting more pressure on 101. it's putting more pressure on city roads. give yourself extra time if that's your commute. you may want to think about -- well, i don't know. using some side roads or going a long way around. bay bridge is a good way to get into san francisco right now if you are coming in from the east bay. it's light coming in through the city. no major problems there. also looking at 880 in oakland. getting a little bit of crowding past the coliseum heading north. back to the desk. we're beginning with continuing coverage of the napa earthquake. building inspectors say napa's historic downtown courthouse was badly damaged in sunday's quake. it may be closed for the next two years and the price tag for repairs may be as much as $20 million. although the cases are normally handled here, they've been transferred to the modern napa county courthouse. some business owners in napa are pretty upset because their

buildings are now red tagged even though their buildings are structurally sound. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live from downtown napa, where one unsafe building is putting some of the others out of business. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. we're actually standing right next to the courthouse that you are just mentioning. across the street is where the problem is that we're talking about. we did see some construction crews arrive a short time ago. we know that contractors and engineers are gonna be out here sometime this morning to strengthen damaged buildings like this one on brown street. this was never reinforced before the earthquake. you can really see the damage there. there are buildings like them all over the bay area, on a list waiting to be retrofitted. but sometimes the quake hits first. the problem is the city is concerned that the brown street buildings that are retrofitted,

some retained no damage but were red tagged and they are retrofitted. one building did not. >> the idea spending a lot of money on that when it's not necessary doesn't make a lot of sense to me. my buildings have been through earthquakes. they are over 100 years old. >> pretty much everyone on this block has been retrofitted and have spent a significant amount of money so when somebody drags their feet, maybe needs to put the screws on harder maybe that lesson is here for us to see. right behind us. >> reporter: now, silver believes the city is overreacting. he has plans to expand and do the retrofit then. he says that if the timetable that the city agreed to, he said he's being capped as the bad guy. businesses want to open on this lieu krative weekend -- lucrative weekend. now the goal will be to get

we have a mess on our hands in san francisco because of the closures on 280. partially because of the closure, i should say. 280 is closed from 101 to king street in the northbound direction and northbound 101 traffic coming into the city is just forced to stay on 101. that's very slow this morning we had an earlier accident in the area. 280 coming from daly city as i trace the line here.

his wife is out on bail. now, the couple owns california car sales in antioch. they are accused of misleading customers about the true mile an of used cars on their lot. 2 investigates was there when authorities raided the business back in june. 8:16. bay area law enforcement agencies, they are increasing dui patrols for the labor day weekend. 2 investigates examines extra efforts to keep repeat drunk drivers off the road. now, law enforcement officials are tracking the dui hot list. the dmv gives the license numbers of repeat offenders to police. the police do the legwork. they track down names, address, photos and vehicle descriptions of drivers who probably will reoffend. >> most of them have multiple dui convictions, multiple suspensions on their driver's license with convictions for driving on a suspended license. >> now, that hot list is a private list but the people on it know they are being watched.

they have received letters identifying them as repeat offenders and they've been warned of severe criminal penalties if caught driving. 8:17. sal, unfortunately, handling a big mess. looking at it. >> we had an earlier crash on northbound 101, pam and dave. silver avenue but the traffic was already busy and it's already busy because of the construction closure on 280 from 101 to king street. i can go to the maps first and show you that 101 is backed up into south san francisco and 280 is backed up from highway 1, 19th avenue, daly city. all of that stretch from daly city to the maze is slow and 101 is slow north of san bruno in south city trying to get in san francisco. it makes sense. people are not allowed to use 280 northbound and they have to be on 101 and that's just causing a big traffic jam. the earlier accident didn't

good morning. welcome back. we're fooling right now developing news -- following right now developing news in san francisco. a traffic mess. a crash on northbound 101 mixed with the closure of interstate 280 is causing a huge traffic jam right now. some of the people out there on the road, they are bailing and they are using the city roads and they are becoming jammed. all of this as people are beginning to hit the road for the labor day holiday weekend. nikes. brian flores is out there now. he's checking on the mess out there. the backup. and in a couple of minutes, sal and brian will give you the latest information. thank you for joining us. friday morning, august 29th. i'm dave clark. we're also checking on your weather and traffic. steve's right there. i am, indeed.

thank you, dave. we have low clouds and a lot of high cloud. we're about ready to go cloudy. this man is pushing over us along the san mateo coast, peninsula. it will make it to the east bay and parts of the south bay. look for mostly cloudy conditions. some of the fog, if you are underneath it, you are like what clouds? all of the remains of what was hurricane marie find of falling apart and heading in our direction. there might be a sprinkle or two to the north. but i think a lot of clouds. that's about it. 50s and 60s. slow to recover. some of these temperatures are not warming up that fast because of the cloud cover and more of a westerly breeze. a couple of returns on radar. if it falls, it would be up to the north. a lot of high clouds today. that also adds humidity to the mix. but we have more low clouds and a westerly breeds. it equals a cooler forecast today. of os, 70s -- 60s, 70s and mainly 80s. here's sal. we've been talking about it now for a bit. northbound 280 and 101 are a mess getting into downtown san francisco because of the peninsula because of the 280

closure and an earlier accident. i think it's more now the 280 clesh ure between 101 and king. northbound lanes are closed. sunday lanes remain open. northbound lanes are closed from -- well, they closed yesterday, they will be closed all weekend for them to do some construction work. people are staying on 101 as they have to and that's very busy getting into downtown. 280 is backed up out of daly city. 101 is backed up out of san bruno. the best advice, give yourself extra time. someone asked if this is gonna affect traffic later today. no way to tell. it depends on how many people have gotten out of town. let's take a look at the other extreme. light commute getting in san francisco from the east bay. it's been a eight-minute drive getting into the city with no major delays. if you are driving this morning in san jose, the freeways look pretty good. 280 northbound in san jose as you can see looks fine. back to the desk. >> all right, sal. as the quake cleanup in napa goes on, waste removal crews

are busy hauling away debris. as of yesterday, they picked up 2.6 million pounds of debris. four times the amount they normally pick up in a four-day period. now, there are three locations where you can drop off waste out there. they are at first and laurel streets, the las flores community center and third street. if you had earthquake damage, you can get help cleaning up as well. tomorrow, the fuller brush company and raybel bank will be passing out brooms, mops, dustpans and more. they will hand them out at the bank parking lot on trancas street. they will do that from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. we have more information about how you can help with the earthquake recovery efforts. go to ktvu.com. click on the north bay tab. the chp is investigating a late-night motorcycle crash in oakland that killed a female rider. it happened just before 11:00 last night on northbound 880

where the freeway intersects with westbound 80 just east of the toll plaza. officers say a woman in her 30s hit the white plastic lane dividers between the lanes and crashed her motorcycle. they say at this point, it does not appear that any other vehicles were involved. >> the medical team arrived. they were able to look over the rider and state that the rider at that time was deceased. >> now, the chp shut down several lanes on northbound 880 right after the accident. those lanes have reopened. investigators say alcohol was not a factor in the crash. oakland's chp is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to give them a call. now, the redwood city police department will be conducting a motorcycle safety enforcement operation today. officers will be patrolling areas popular with motorcyclists and areas where motorcycle crashes most frequently occur. they will be cracking down on drivers and riders who are

speeding. making illegal u-turns or who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. if you are heading out of town for the labor day weekend, expect a crowd with you. a new aaa report says 34 million americans will travel 50 miles or more this weekend. that's more people than for any labor day weekend in the past six years. a lot of reasons why, including the price of gas. even though it's still pretty high in the prayer, nationwide, the average is lower. people we talked to this morning say they know why that's not scaring off travelers. >> i would think people want to, you know, cut loose and have a good time and get out of town. no better way to do that than going on a three-day weekend. i see it. i don't know why it would be so much more than maybe the last year or two. maybe people have more money than they did the last couple of years. >> now, people are also traveling by air. aaa says airfares have gone up

2%. hotel rates are slightly up. but still, that's not stopping people from going on vacation. police in san jose say a woman found in a car that was parked outside of a church was stabbed to death. a passerby called police at 11:00 yesterday morning after seeing the woman inside a car in a parking lot outside of grace church on ketman road. the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. the church's pastor said the woman had no apparent connection to the church. >> knew it wasn't associated with anybody that happens here on a regular basis at the church. no relationship to our programs and the people who participate in our programs. >> woman's name has not been released. no arrests have been made. this is san jose's 26th homicide of the year. in san jose's willow glen neighborhood people are saying the city is wasting water. one woman says for almost a month she's watched as four gallons of water every hour leaked into a gutter. nancy flurky said she called

the city. they told her the broken valve is not a priority because it's not causing property damage. >> i feel as a citizen i've been doing my part. >> the city council came out, what? just the other day about how you must have any leaks at a hugheshow old repaired within five days. we're here with the city leak that's been 28 days. >> well, she created the sign counting the delays the water keeps flowing through the street. they say that leak can't be mixed because other utilities have to be notified. a water company spokesman said no water company says zero leakage. he also says the leak rate is 7% which is less than half of the national average. a high school teacher in newark has been reprimanded after she posted menacing streets. about her students. "i already want to stab some kids. is that bad? 19 more days." the tweets by the history

welcome back. 8:43. we're following breaking news for you. huge delays for freeway drivers heading into san francisco on the beat ginning of this labor day weekend. the horrible traffic out there is tied to the construction project on interstate 280. ktvu's brian flores is out there in san francisco. you see it. what's going on? >> reporter: well, as you mentioned it, dave, it's backed up, traffic here along the 101/280 interchange. you called it yesterday. i mean, they did the closure at 2:00 on thursday, not many people had the day off on friday, it was expected. it's pretty bad toward the interchange. 280 backed up to daly city. the 101 is backed up to south san francisco. a little bit of good news. as we take a look at in the distance, southbound, obviously all of the lanes are open. traffic is moving there nicely. as we were driving up, we're

off third street going towards bayshore boulevard and the 101 northbound. when you passed the curve, traffic was moving nicely. as you approach san francisco it get better. but a huge backup on the 101/280 interchange. i got off the phone with the chp a few months ago and they say that overall traffic is bad. keep in mind that drivers are getting off on the side streets. ail alemany looking bad. if you are heading in this direction in san francisco, add extra time. there is a huge backup because of the 280 closure this morning. we'll provide you updates on the news this morning as well as twitter and facebook. we're live here in san francisco, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:45. a mystery building is going up on the campus of de anza college in cupertino. it's connected to the upcoming apple announce on thement on --

announcement on the 9th of september. no details. but alex savidge has been snooping around talking to truck drivers. you've been trying hard. >> reporter: we're trying. apple's next product launch, likely the new iphone will happen here at de anza college in cupertino. the company is apparently going all out for this event. they are constructing this three-story building in the middle of campus and you can see there's fencing that's gone up all around this place. we'll give you a look at what's going on beyond the fencing. this is the mystery structure that has apple fans so excited. you can see how tight security is around here. there are guards everywhere keeping people back and this is the invitation, the company sent out about its big announcement happening the week after next on september 9th. no specifics here. the invitation reads simply we wish we could say more. but the location of the event is significant. 30 years ago, steve jobs unveiled the first measure

where i want it. northbound 101, you can see backed up to south city. 280 is backed up to daly city. some of the side roads, alemany road is a mess. there are no issues at toll plaza. that looks pretty good. no major problems getting into the city. the rest of the afternoon commute -- or the morning commute looks good getting up to highway 17, 280, 101 and 85. let's go to steve. >> all right. thank you. a lot of cloud cover, low clouds, fog. a high lot of high clouds -- a lot of high clouds. category 5 hurricane is now visiting us, marie. if you have the clouds, i don't see anything. denise said it's great in rockridge. if you go far enough north and east, you can find the higher clouds. they are right there. even if you have a little bit of sun, i think we'll see partly to mostly cloudy skies. that's all that's left of marie. a lot of this is heading in our direction. i think today is the day for most of that cloud cover. it should move south.

50s, 60s on the temperatures. too much cloud cover here. a little more of a westerly breeze coming down a little bit. but still steady at 20. had gusts to 35 earlier. water temperatures from 63. bodega bay. 64 for san francisco. buoy, monterey, everyone is close. we need a northwest breeze to get some of that cooler upswelling. it has not happened yet. maybe next week. you can see the cloud cover streaming from the sierra nevada right over the sacramento valley over us. there could be a few sprinkles to the north. i doubt much happens here. there's a few returns on radar. but this is a back worse than the bite. a lot of cloud cover. fog, sun, clouds. drizzle. probably over with right now. a lot of high clouds. more clouds to the north bay and then a little bit more sun to the south bay. 60s, 70s, 8 o 90s. the cloud cover could take a few degrees off the forecasted highs. that's always a tricky, tricky forecast. 70s, 80s to a few low 90s. combine a breeze and temperatures will slide down a little bit.
