i'm cristina rendon. tori campbell is off. we begin with preparations underway right now for a natural disaster. san francisco public schools are taking part in an earthquake drill in response tonight napa earthquake. alex savidge has more. >> reporter: good afternoon. well, what happened in napa this past weekend was certainly an important reminder that everyone needs to know what to do when the shaking starts and with that in mind, we were hear inside la fayette elementary school in san francisco this morning for a very important drill. after hearing an emergency announcement from the principal, this was the scene as students in this fifth grade class all immediately dropped to the floor, got under their desks and covered their heads. this was part of a districtwide earthquake drill prompted by sunday's 6.0 quake in the napa area. after the students sheltered under their desk, teachers

evacuated their classes out to the playground and some kids say they understand how important this kind of practice is. >> there will be times when earthquakes will happen when we're at school. we need to be ready for it and know what to do. it shouldn't be a surprise to us. >> because if you are in a real earthquake, you need to cover your head so you don't get hurt severely or if it hits your leg it's not as severe. >> reporter: and the phrase you might remember during earthquake drills is duck and cover. but these days students here in san francisco are taught to shelter and cover. the idea of sheltering implies protecting yourself. one of the teachers here told me that ever since sunday's earthquake she's been talking to her students about how to respond in the case of a disaster here and she says she was proud of how her kids did today. >> i think they did a fantastic job. they are san franciscans. so of course, none of this was new to them. many of them have been through

little jolts before. but today's activity is gonna make them even more prepared. >> reporter: the principal here told me the students at la fayette elementary do earthquake drills about once a month but today's drill will be especially help f.m. and that's because he says the kids are practicing so soon after a real earthquake and for that reason, they tend to pay closer attention. we're live this afternoon in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, alex. now to our continuing coverage of the napa quake. building inspectors say the city's historic downtown courthouse was badly damaged and could be shut down for the next two years. repairs could cost as much as $20 million. it was built until 1870s. always hayess have been -- cases have been transferred to the courthouse across the street. the sit is hoping to restore water to everyone in napa by the end of the day. at this point, it's not clear if the city will reach the

goal. we've learned there are 20 water line leaks that are still needing repairs. that's down from 120 breaks right after the quake. currently, there are about 200 customers still without water. that's compared to the nearly 400 customers who didn't have water this morning. one pizza parlor in downtown napa is shut down despite going through the earthquake with flying colors. it was retrofitted before the quake. but the buildings that back up to the peteia shop are considered -- pizza shop are considered dangerous. the lawyer who owns the brown street building has rejected calls to retrofit the properties. >> the idea of spending a lot of money on that when it's not necessary doesn't make a lot of sense to me. >> he says he doesn't think it's necessary. >> it looks necessary to me. >> . >> the property owner says the city is overreacting. he plans to expand and remodel

all buildings and will retrofit them at the time. he says it's a timetable the city agreed to. napa building inspectors are continuing to go through the city looking for unsafe buildings. they red tagged this historic pink victorian home as it shifted off the foundation. it's among the growing number of buildings that have been ruled too dangerous to enter. they've red tagged 170 buildings in the last five days. as a sign of the city trying to recover, the annual city napa nights concert tonight will go on as planned. and we have more information about how you can help with efforts. go to ktvu.com and click on the north bay tab. a walnut creek creek police officer is on paid reeve leave -- paid leave after he was arrested for allegedly attacking a woman with a bat. he's accused of wearing a mask and attacking a woman walking

in richmond at 2:00 on august 15th. she ran out of gas and was on her way to get help when she was attacked. the chp is investigating a late-night motorcycle crash in oakland that killed a female rider. it happened before 11:00 last night on northbound 880 where the freeway intersects with westbound 880. officers say a woman in her 30s hit the plastic lane dividers between the lanes and crashed her bike. they say at this point, it doesn't appear any other vehicles were involved. >> the medical team arrived, and they were able to look over the rider and state that the rider at that time was deceased. >> the chp shut down several lanes on northbound 880 right after the accident. those lanes have since reopened. investigators say alcohol was not a factor in the crash. oakland chp is asking anyone who witnessed this accident to call them. the redwood city police

department will be conducting a motorcycle safety enforcement operation today. officers will be patrolling areas popular with motorcyclists in areas where motorcycle crashes frequently occur. they will be cracking down on riders speeding, making illegal u-turns or are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. even though it's the start of the lane i day weekend, there's no break for drivers caught in traffic jams. some some of the worse gridlock was in san francisco. brian flores has more. >> reporter: good afternoon. you know the phrase want to get away? several commuters wanted to get to work this morning. behind me, though, you can see caltrans crews working on the retrofit going on on northbound 280. it's important work considering the napa earthquake on sunday but there's big headaches for several commuters before the labor day weekend. well, into the morning commute headed to san francisco, it was gridlock. slow and go, bullpen. if you were near the 280/101

interchange, you saw it and would probably frustrated. >> the report i got was probably at 10:00 a.m., there was delays. we were trying to -- we have been telling the public to expect significant delay during this closure. >> reporter: caltrans says contractors needed the extra day during the week because they are doing double the work than the previous closures on july 4th and memorial day. but despite warns about the closure, the commute was not pretty. northbound 101 backed up to candle still. northbound 280 backed up at times to daly city. caltrans says this was the best alternative. >> on the long run we could have done long-term projects that could take this project take a year long. people would have had to have these closures day after day for a year. >> reporter: they hope this could be done before the tuesday 5:00 a.m. deadline. aaa says travel this weekend could be the busiest in six

years. >> i would think people want to, you know, cut loose and have a good time and get out of town and there's no better way to do that than going on a three-day weekend. >> reporter: aaa says more than 34 million cars nationwide will hit the road starting today. despite gas prices still over 3.50 a gallon, hotel rates increased along with triple fare, aaa says it's a good sign people are going on vacation. >> i think people have gotten out of the scary phase of why stop traveling. if the gas is $4 a gallonnen, we still want to have fun and travel. you can't just keep yourself tied in. >> reporter: as we take it back out here live, it's not every day that you get to see the cesar chavez offramp closed down. but again, caltrans wants you to be aware that all traffic being diverted on northbound 101, several events going on. the giants' game.

give yourself dra time or take public transportation. we are live here in san francisco, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. commuters will pay more to ride san francisco muni starting monday. the single ride fare will go up $2.25. the cost of the monthly pass that includes b.a.r.t. will rise to $80 from the current $76. muni only passes will cost $68 up from $66. fares for seniors, disabled and youth riders will not rise. muni says these fares are the first fare increases in five years. nascar champion tony stewart will return to racing after hitting and killing another driver this month. he talked publicly about the crash for the first time this morning. on august 9th, he hit kevin ward junior during a difrt track race in -- dirt track race in new york. he said it will affect his life forever, but adds get back in the car and spending time with his racing family are helping him get through this difficult

the united kingdom raise the terror threat level to the seagd highest over developments in iraq and syria. they say this is a designation that a terrorist attack is highly likely. but it's suggested no intelligence is likely that a threat is imminent. britain's prime minister plans to introduce new laws to combat terror suspects. >> what we're facing in iraq right now is a greater and deeper threat to our security than we've known before. >> white house officials say currently there are no plans to raise the terror alert level here in the u.s. but they say the u.s. is watching the

movements of americans who have gone to syria or iraq to train with isis. a wildfire burning in southern santa clara county is 50% contained. at least 80 acres have burned on both side of highway 152 east of gilroy. the chp says the fire started after a crash on the highway near casade fruta. no structures have burned. no injuries have been reported. the new san jose fire department will be hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for its newest fire station. the department is relocating fire station 21 from the current site on pleasant pleasant road. firefighters say the new station will have a modern design to help reduce response times. the ceremony will be at 3:00 at the new location on south white road. construction is set to be complete by december of next year. a man is clinging to life after getting shot in antioch. it happened around 7:30 near the intersection of 17th and c

street. police say they found a wounded man lying on the street. he was rushed to the hospital where he's listed in critical condition. at this point, there's no information on suspects or what led up to the shooting. police near sacramento are looking for a man who crashed a u-haul truck into a home. it happened early yesterday morning in citrus heights. the truck crashed a few feet from a baby in her crib. heard that noise ran to the back. the u-haul missed my daughter's crib by a few feet. >> the baby is okay. the u-haul took a bike out of the truck and rode off. happening today, california is expected to become the first state in the flation to ban plastic grocery bags. state lawmakers are expected to give the final approval to the controversial measure after a long and heated debate. environmentalists on support

the bag. but bagmakers say it will cause the industry jobs. if passed, it will take effect next year. state lawmakers would follow the lead of cities and counties that have already beened plastic bags. two northern california counties want out of california so they can form their 51st state. the counts of modac and siskiyou. they want to form their own state which they've already named jefferson. they believe the split will allow them to create more jobs, improve education and deal with specific issues in the areas. the establishment of a new state is not easy. it requires voter approval as well as approval from the legislature and congress. the daughter of joan rivers says her mother is resting comfortably after being rushed to the hospital for cardiac arrest. the 81 81-year-old was undergoing a procedure on her vocal cords when she stopped breathing. she was taken to mount sinai in new york where she's listed in critical but stable condition. nobody knew it at the time but the beatles made history in

most of the day. i want to get to the satellite view. i want to show you what's going on. you can see very widespread. for some barely noticeable. you are seeing the blue sky with a few wispy clouds overhead. we have a couple of things going on. we have a system riding through the pacific northwest. that's bringing a bit of a cooldown. some of us are slightly cooler right now than we were 24 hours ago. for some of us, not so much. but we also have this moisture pulling in from the south. you see this? this is post tropical storm marie. the system to the north of us, helping to bring in some of that moisture. you can see it's moving right across the bay area and that's what we'll have for today, a mix of low clouds and high clouds. could feel a little humid out there for some. for some of us, temperatures will be slightly cooler for today. i do want to mention in addition to this, for the areas along the beach, especially our south-facing beaches, if you are thinking about going to santa cruz for the holiday weekend, be aware of what's

going on. you may have large breakers due to, again, too that post tropical system. in and around the bay area as we get into the afternoon, notice the clouds begin to thin out for the afternoon, at least away from the coast. along the coast, partly to mostly cloudy all day. inland we'll see the clouds thin out and tomorrow morning, i think they will be back but they will thin out for your saturday afternoon. temperaturewise, 80s in the forecast for novato, san rafael today. get into the east bay, 87 danville. 80 castro valley. 76 in hayward. 83 for redwood city, 68 expected in san francisco today. the extended forecast there with your bay area weekend always in view showing you temperatures will crime a few degrees as we get into your holiday weekend. it will be nice to warm for most of us and again that subtropical moisture should be pulling out tomorrow. >> sounds like a great time to spend outside and enjoy the holiday. >> poi -- poi weather.

buzz is building over apple's next big announcement. there's extra mystery surrounding it. a three-story building is going up next to the flint center at de anza college. the announcement is slated for disease 9th and is expected to focus on the iphone 6 and some type of wearable device like the iwatch. the location is significant since 30 years ago, steve jobs unveiled the first mcintosh computer inside the flint center. crews are working around the clock to get everything ready. and google first made a name for itself on the information superhighway. now it's trying to dominate the skies. google released this video of its project wing program. it sends unmanned drones to drifer -- deliver anything from foods to medicine. the company has made 30 successful deliveries in australia during a test run. packages are stored inside the plane's body and lowered by a

chain of 120 to 180 feet above the ground. the first successful delivery was chocolate bars. a photo has emerged of a state parks ranger arrested for drunk driving in humboldt county. take a look. you can see he's asleep and that's a beer can between his legs. he was parked on the avenue of the giants in redwood state park. the person who took the picture apparently tried to wake up the ranger but couldn't and called 911. chp arrested the ranger on dui charges. the state park's department has stripped him of his peace officer's status and placed him on leave. for the first time in 15 years, a popular bay area tradition has been canceled. every december, tens of thousands fill the streets to watch the children's holiday parade. why it isn't coming back and the response from the community, those stories and more at 5:00. well, thank you so much for making ktvu your choice for
