an oakland police vehicle strikes a man as he crosses the street. we are at the scene learning more details as the investigation unfolds. good evening. thanks for joining us for the special postgame edition of ktvu channel 2 news. we begin with developing news. tonight a 58-year-old man is in critical condition after being hit by an oakland patrol car. >> christina rendon live with more details. >> reporter: we can tell you that a portion of east 12th has been shut down for about six hours now as this investigation continues. if you take a look behind us, this is the intersection with the pedestrian was hit, and you can even see there is still some of the pedestrian's items scattered on the street.

now, this all happened around 2:00 this afternoon on the 300 block of east 12th. an oakland police officer spokesman says one of their officers was responding to a call but was not traveling very fast. they say he didn't even have his lights or sirens on. but the officer was passing through this intersection when he hit a pedestrian. we're told that victim is a 58-year-old man from oakland who was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. when we took video earlier you could see that man's items were scattered on the street and the police department tells us their officer is shaken up. >> we're looking at cameras in the area to see he if we can find video that may have captured the incident. they are looking into that right now to give us a better idea of the cause of the collision. >> reporter: and police are now saying that they don't even know if that pedestrian was in the marked pedestrian crosswalk. it's obviously something they are looking into. they are doing a very thorough

investigation. they have been out here for about six hours and they are asking anyone with information or anyone who may have had cellphone video of this accident to give them a call. live in oakland, christina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. and now to our continuing coverage of the napa quake. a new look at surveillance video shot sunday morning as the earthquake hit. you are looking at the commissary building at the train yard. the video is just another reminder of how powerful this earthquake was. napa valley businesses are hoping for a big labor day weekend crowd. six days after the 6.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the region. labor day weekend and the start of the grape harvest are usually two big draws for visitors. today businesses recovering from the quake spruced up their fronts to let tourists know they are open and ready for business. >> every hotel, i have gotten many calls to ask, is it okay to come? should we plan for a different

time? we have been able to say please come, you're going to be fine. >> tourism generates $1.4 billion annually for the region and 25,000 usually come to napa for the labor day weekend. a santa rosa man died, two other people-injured after falling hundreds of feet off a seaside cliff in daly city. according to the coast guard they broke through a fence running along the fence at palisades park at about 4:30 this morning. they fell teen 250 to 300 feet to the beach below. firefighters say that 29-year-old sean carrington was killed. the two unidentified survivors were taken to a trauma center. part of a busy bay area freeway was closed for several hours today because of an overturned cement truck. it happened on highway 4 in anitoch. the highway patrol shut down all westbound lanes until the wreckage could be removed. it's unclear what caused the cement truck to turn over. there is no word on injuries to

the dryer. the highway patrol says the lanes were reopened just about 11:15. the highway patrol in sonoma county is looking to witnesses to a deadly hit-and-run crash. it was just west of petaluma. the chp says a 2007 chevy pickup truck collided with a mazda. that driver died at the scene and the pickup driver escaped on foot. police have identified the victim as a 51-year-old man from napa. caltrans says traffic is flowing smoothly from the peninsula to san francisco tonight despite the partial closure of interstate 280. it's closed if the 101 interstate to king street for retrofit work. northbound traffic is detoured on to 101. two hinges are being replaced. that should allow the roadway to expand and contract during an earthquake. officials say the work was planned well before the napa quake, but say that the tremblor

is a remannedder of the danger posed by large earthquakes. the family of a san ramon women missing since wednesday says she has been found. the search crews from 11 counties have been searching for 77-year-old luba lusherovich after she walked away from her home at about noon on wednesday. her son tells us that she suffers from dementia. family members say she was found just this afternoon in the norris canyon road area of san ramon and was taken to a hospital suffering from dehydration. meantime, in burlingame police are looking for an 82-year-old woman who hasn't been seen since thursday. a silver alert was activated for sharon faish. she was last seen driving a black 1988 toyota truck with a california license plate 3r67862. police say that she suffers from medical conditions and that could leave her disoriented.

the st. louis rams have cuts to the first openly gay player in the nfl from its regular season roster. michael sam seen here practicing with the rams was a star at missouri and a seventh round drafted choice. the coach described it as a football decision that could have happened to any draft choice. sam has until tomorrow afternoon to be signed to another team. he could be retained as a practice squad player by the rams. we are hearing from 49ers linebacker aldon smith for the first time following his nine-game suspension. smith issued a statement saying, in, i apologize to my teammates, coaches and the entire 49ers organization and 49ers fans for not being able to contribute on the field for the next several weeks. over the last year i have learned a lot, and i am working hard to grow from my experiences. the nfl announced that penalty against smith just yesterday. it comes after repeated brushes with the law since 2012, including smith's arrest on drug charges and weapons charges and

a dui along with being belligerent and uncooperative with security screeners at los angeles airport. he says he will work to support his teammates during his suspension. >> watch a ktvu news special about the 49ers new home. tomorrow night at 11:00 catch all access pass levi stadium. it will air right after the 10:00 news. now to that developing news, developing crisis in the middle east. 680 militants today posted the beheading of a lebanese soldier on mode media sites. they called on the families of 18 other captured soldiers calling for the release of islamist prisoners. this comes as u.s. secretary of state john kerry is calling for an international response to the growing influence of isis militants in the middle east. it has prompted the united kingdom to raise its terror threat to severe meaning an attack is likely to happen. isis is expected to top the

agenda when kerry and chuck hagel attend a nato meeting in whales next week. protests turned violent. police fired tear gas on demonstrators who were reportedly trying to storm the prime minister's home. it was the latest in a series of protests demanding the resignation of prime minister sarif. he says he will not step down. the protests have been going on two weiss. european leaders meet to discuss what can be done to avoid a full scale war between russia and ukraine. european union is giving russia a one week ultimatum to scale back intervention in ukraine or face especially economic sanctions. dominic dean tally has the latest. >> reporter: european union leaders meeting saturday to discuss the growing military crisis in ukraine and preparing to slap new sanctions on russia. >> we are in a very serious, i would say, dramatic situation.

we may see a situation where we reach the point of no return. >> reporter: the eu says it's been a major push by russian troops to further their army onto ukraine soil while russian president vladimir putin staunchly denies it. >> thousands of the foreign troops and hundreds of the foreign tanks now on the territory of ukraine. >> reporter: several ukrainian soldiers were killed as pro-russian soldiers were passing through a hufford corridor saturday. >> they were given a place to exit but they were shot. it is a violation of international conventions. >> reporter: shelling also continues in the region. mortar blasts destroyed part of a soccer stadium overnight and causing a fire that engulfed the entire arena residents were digging trenches and laying sandbags as they expect russian advancement in the coming days. >> i came here to help because

lawmakers wrapped up their session early this morning. reporter kevin oliver has more on some of the big decisions before the governor and one bill he has already expressed support for. >> reporter: they work in retail, cook your food, and all sorts of jobs. but according to a recent study when nearly 7 million people in california need to call in sick for work, they get no compensation. >> it's absolutely -- i don't get it. i mean, sick worker is not a productive worker. we need sick time. >> we can't tell when we're going to get sick. it's not something that you can control. >> they are taking care of people or interacting with the public. we don't want them to come to work sick. >> reporter: lorena gonzalez of san diego has been working on the bill since she took office. >> it's three days. but at the same time it's transformative. it's the biggest expansion workers right that the state has seen probably in 30 years. >> reporter: the bill will require all employers to provide three days of sick leave to workers every year. a crude basedden the number of

hours work. the governor who rarely talking about pending legislation issued this statement after the bill was passed. tonight the legislature took historic action to help hard working californians. this bill guarantees millions of workers won't lose their jobs or pay just because they get sick. the sick pay bill was opposed by business groups, but its designation as a job killer was dropped hours before lawmakers approved the bill. >> this is going to change people's lives and we really did not want it risk it by putting it off another year. >> reporter: the only workers not covered are home health care workers and gonzalez hopes they eventually get sick leave as well. >> gonzalez says she hopes those home health care workers will be covered under a new labor agreement. the bill is now awaiting the governor's signature. a legal marijuana growing operation in the sierra has sucked thousands of gallons of much needed water.

the department of fish and wildlife says that some 13,000 plants were discovered recently on the reservation. rangers say each plant needs between 8 and 10 gallons of water, all of which was drained from the tribe's main water source. in addition, rangers say that the debris and cans left by the growers can cause trouble for wildlife. >> part of the problem, under can see what the effect of wildlife is. these are all teeth marks from the bears that ripped these cans open. metal cans. so the bears, when they rip it into pieces they cut their tongues, teeth, and gums. >> it's likely the marijuana grow was the work of an international drug trafficking operation. no arrests were made but the rangers cleared out thousands of plants, ten miles of plastic irrigation pipes and 10,000 pounds of trash. health officials in san joaquin county have issued an

advisory this labor day weekend to avoid potentially toxic algae. it has been prevalent this year because of low water levels and humid weather. this video shows a recent bloom along the stockton water front. experts say there is no way to tell by looking at the algae if it's toxic. so if it's in the water, humans should stay on dry land. notably warmer weather fell over the bay area today. we will have more of the same as we get into the second half of your bay area weekend. giving you a look here at the numbers from today, 95 degrees this afternoon in anitoch. we had 80 degrees in hayward. 71 san francisco. mostly sunny skies. mid-to-upper 60s along the coast in areas like pacifica and to the north 88 in napa, 93 santa rosa. along the peninsula 86 redwood city today. 86 for san jose. temperatures right now as we move into the evening hours

still quite mild, even wham. take a look at the summer evening in anitoch. 84 degrees at this time. 72 livermore. 74 walnut creek. upper 70s in concord. around the bay nice and mild as well. 72 redwood city. to the north 73 in napa, 69 in pavano and 872 it at the airport in santa rosa. the on shore breeze has turned on and it's quite robust through the delta. 32-mile-an-hour gusts with a sustained wind at 25 miles per hour. so that is pushing some cool pacific air into the area for your evening hours. but as we get into sunday more of the same expected with a nice warm-up in store. take a look at this. nightfall over the bay area, what a gorgeous view there. as we get into the evening hours we have the clouds returning to the coast tonight. we will wake up tomorrow with a little bit of cloud cover right at the coast. patchy fog. for the afternoon sunny and warm once again. right now it looks like labor day could actually be the warmest day. we will have look at that the extended forecast. as we get into the evening

hours the clouds slowly begin to reform and by tomorrow morning here we are again with hugging the coastline the fog. it will burn off for the afternoon. we will be left with pacifica to mostly sunny skies from the coast, around the bay, and inland for your sunday. look at the numbers expected tomorrow morning. a lot like today. 70 degrees in oakland. 59 san francisco. 60 in fremont. it's going to be mild with mostly sunny skies for most of us to start the day. and then for the afternoon a near repeat. low 80s in fremont. low 90s in conquered. 86 napa. 94 in anitoch. mid 70s to mid 80s on the coast. temperatures are expected to continue to warm slightly as we get into monday and then back to work on tuesday, temperatures will begin to fall as a cooler pattern moves in. but all in all it feels quite nice out there. feels like summer again for many of us. >> thank you. well, coming up the college

blue skies brought out the crowds today at one. bay area's premiere arts festivals. her red hot skillet liquors were on hand at the sausalito art festival. tower of power tops the bill on monday. 260 artists from around the world exhibited their work and more than 30 wineries are offering up some tastings. there was children's entertainment as well. proceeds from the annual benefit art groups. it runs through monday. it is gay pride weekend in oakland. this year the city is expanding the celebration with a parade. that starts at 10:30 tomorrow morning at 14th and broadway. a day-long music festival at 20th and broadway starts at 11 in the morning. admission to the festival costs $10 and the parade is free. a hot air balloon made a bit of a surprise landing in the

north bay. ktvu viewer rick vinson says that that balloon landed before 8:00 this morning right there on tanny way in the napa valley mobile home park. a fire destroyed several mobile homes after sunday's earthquake there. hot air balloons are a common sight in the area. they don't usually land here. everyone on board was laughing. bay area hockey fans are getting a chance to spend quality time with that stanley cup. the cup went on display at the westin hotel in napa as part of a fundraiser for earthquake relief. the l.a. kings won the cup in june and one of the the stanley cup traditions is they each get to take possession of the cup for some time. tomorrow morning the cup is set to be on display in santa rosa at snoopy's home ice arena. >> . let's head over to joe. >> you feeling a change if the air? >> a little bit. >> it's that time of year. the college football season is 100% upon us.

when you are ranked number 11 in the country, you're supposed to do what stanford did today to uc davis. this game bore no resem blueness to the stunner in 2005. here is the first time stanford touched the football. starts looking for blocks. uses his speed to go 60 yards for a score. less than three minutes into the game a 7-0 lead. and so it went. the cardinal led 14-0 after a quarter. here in the second kevin hogan fires to michael rector for 40 yards and a score. stanford piles up 461 yards of offense to just 115 for the aggies. still in the second hogan finds kristyn mccaffrey. he runs 52 yards to the end zone. 28-0. hogan is not play in the second half. standered led 38-0 at halftime and won 45-0. 11 players got at least one carry for stanford and 12
