>> one of the issues is, for us trying to locate the fire, makes it difficult. early on we tried to make an aggressive attack so i decided to pull everyone out for safety, we pulled everyone out, went to an exterior operation. we attacked the operation from all four sides. we contained the fire to that building and the building to the right of it. at this time we are worried bowl structural problems. we had a floor -- about structural problems. we had a floor collapse. >> thank you, chief. we will check in with you later. we have been told these are old buildings. they have no fire abatement walls. concerns about collapse. fortunately this was retrofitted for earthquakes. the brick walls did not collapse on the firefighters during that time and this is not the first time this

building has been on the fire department's radar. we are working on that and we will have more on that at 5:30 p.m. reporting live in san francisco, patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we want to show you the store that caught fire. this is from google maps. one of those places that sells everything. this shows the store just lined with t-shirts, backpacks, purses, soccer balls. if you have been inside you know they are packed with all sorts of goods. these pictures were taken in may. >> this is on the ground about 20 minutes after the fire started. the smoke so thick you could barely see the police car. as you wait, now you can get an idea of how thick all the smoke was and how much of a problem it caused for firefighters. that video was taken half a block away from the fire but

there was so much smoke that people several blocks away said it was tough to breathe. ktvu's noelle walker has been talking to people drying to deal with all that smoke down wind from the massive fire. >> i covered a lot of fires but this was tough to cope win terms of the smoke. we drove through it on the way here and right now we are several blocks away, but till a half hour ago we had to use masks because the smoke was so thick it was hard to speak or even breathe. >> reporter: today it is covered in smoke. >> you could see the smoke coming. >> like a volcano thick smoke spewed. the air was smoking. people took -- smoking. people took -- choking. people took cover. >> my grandchildren they are as

felony counts including kidnapping and false imprisonment. ktvu's john sasaki is at the jail where he learned the case hit a snag. >> reporter: the rapper charles mitchell could be released anytime now. prosecutors need more information before they could proceed with the case. >> reporter: charles mitchell or mark sanford as he is known, as been in jail since tuesday. the area. we have also learned the store that burn said may have had problems in the past. ktvu's patti lee is live from the scene. what have you learned about the business? >> a couple things. it has not been sited but there are complaints about the way the merchandise was stored, a fire hazard but no citations. the main concern right now is that parts of this building could still collapse. the fire is not yet out. it is mostly contained. investigators are here, they are trying to find the cause of the fire, which started around 1:00 p.m. and devoured this building which was made mostly of wood. three other buildings were also damaged. including an apartment building where 20 people live. these buildings built before fire codes existed and firefighters say they were lucky this had retrofitted

brick walls that made it more sturdy but the fire chief said it is the merchandise and the way it was stored that led to complaints in the past and made it a danger today. >> i was just told that with this particular property i believe they were sited in 2009 and 2013 with over crowded much much -- merchandise. i am told both times the violation was abated and they corrected the problem. we have our arson team on scene. they will determine the cause and origin. >> reporter: that could be a little while away. crews are expected to stay here through the night, still checking for hot spots and this fire is not yet out. no one today was seriously hurt. when you look at this smoke that enveloped the neighborhood from the ground up, it is hard to believe only two

district. the conditions that made it a difficult fire fight. >> trying to keep kids in school. >> elementary school student who is drunk is more likely to become a high school drop out. >> having success getting and keeping kids in the classroom. >> ktvu channel 2 news starts right now with breaking news. >> a difficult battle for firefighters as a store in the mission erupts in flames sending thick smoke into the sky for blocks away. good evening. hello. i am frank somerville. >> and i am julie haener. >> the fire started after 1:00 p.m. this afternoon inside a store on mission street between 22 and 23 streets. news chopper 2 was over head as firefighters arrived on the scene to find the flames burning through the roof of the business. we have live team coverage

tonight. ktvu's noelle walker spoke with people who were impacted by the heavy smoke but we begin with patti lee and why the fire was extra challenging for firefighters. >> it wasn't just the hazards outside, it started the minute they arrived on scene. black smoke starting from the ground up. these streets are blocked off. there is a one block perimeter around the fire, 23 and mission. we are told this fire is contained but it is still not out. still a lot of potential structural damage to this building that caught fire around 1:00 p.m. and you can see these flames coming through the two story building which was filled with merchandise, a lot of it made out of plastic and that is what caused a lot of problems for the firefighters. it was hard to see, it was hard to breathe and this was a problem they encountered the minute
