police in the south bay investigating an early morning assault which may have involved one of their own. and the foam after 70-year- old man who was severely beaten pleading for if public's help in finding his attacker. the latest on the fire in the mission district and what prevented them from entering the building. good afternoon. right now police in the south bay investigating an assault

involving an employee with the sheriff's department. we have the exclusive story and joins us live. >> reporter: we are behind a strip mall that has numerous asian businesses in it. back here we found fresh blood. we found blood on the stairs leading up to the back of the restaurant. this is where the astall took place. -- assault took place. police say they were called at 4:00 this morning actually a few hours after the attack occurred. officers say three men ended up jumping a man while he was behind the restaurant off of capital expressway. they did exchange words right before the attack but investigators won't reveal what was said. initial reports are that the victim is a deputy but the sheriff's department will only say it was an employee of the department. the victim refused medical attention and at this point

it's unknown if he was beaten badly. there are several security cameras in the area and police will be reviewing the video to see if it captured any of the attack. police are investigating what lead up to this. at this point police have not captured any of the men involved. rubin, my colleague, is following this story. we'll have more at 5:00 and 6:00. ktvu channel 2 news. a man beaten at a park is asking for help finding the man's attacker. they say wong was collecting recyclables and got into an argument with another man. that man punched him. the man appeared to be part of a group having a party. the party continued while he laid on the ground. we spoke to his son-in-law who did not want to appear on camera. >> . it shocks all of us.

in some respects our family has been turned upside down because of this. we are asking for the public's assistance. if you have any information call the haywardpolice department. >> he has undergone two surgeries and has not regained consciousness. a suspicious man followed a 13-year-old girl home from school. it happened near petaluma. she said the man repeatedly asked her to get in the car and followed the girl for nearly half a mile. >> at one point she started to run and he was following alongside her the whole time. definitely brazen. >> she described him as dark skinned. early to mid-30s and acne scared face. he was drive possibly a toyota prius. it had seat covers with a pink hello kitty logo. this is a sketch police

released based on a description. they say the latest incident happened wednesday night when a 17-year-old jogger was attacked. the girl was able to fight and get away. two other similar attacks were reported last month. right now firefighters still on the scene of the building fire in the mission district. we are live from the scene with how extensive the damage is and what will happen to the building, tara. >> reporter: it is even more dramatic. take a look behind me here of all of the backpacks, luggage and clothes. all of this will have to be hauled away. firefighters say this building will need to be demolished. we are on mission between 22nd and 23rd streets where flames tore through the store yesterday sending a huge cloud of smoke over the mission district.

many people were grabbing masks and scarves to protect themselves from the smoke. because it was so deep it twisted steel support beams and will need to be torn down. >> it was packed with different inventory. when it collapsed on top of what was on the first floor it created a thick pile of fuel. naturally all of that fuel underneath that our hose streams can't get to directly once we start to move the piles of debris will expose pockets where there could be hidden fire. >> reporter: three near by businesses sustained smoke and water damage. two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation. the owners are working with their insurance to get the green light. meantime arson investigators are waiting to get inside here to try to figure out what exactly caused this fire. if fire chief has said that the business has been sited twice for 20 -- since 2009 for

conditions and narrow exit routes. mission between 2nd and -- 22nd and 23rd is shut down. utility crews allowed in this area but civilians are not being allowed. this could go on for the next couple of days. if you live in the area and need to get through i would advise trying to take the bus or using other routes. >> thanks. a lot of clean up there they still need to do. thank you. investigators try to go figure out if a burning candle sparked an early morning fire. it started just before 5:00 this morning at the building on core bin avenue. no one was hurt. crews were able to keep the fire contained to the fifth floor unit. the people who live in that apartment told us a leaked candle leaked that fire. >> they told me they were very sorry, the place was on fire. it looked like a movie. >> fire investigators looking into the reports about a candle. the exact cause of the fire is

unknown. firefighters do think it was an accident. a memorial service being held at walnut creek to remember a chp officer killed in the line of duty two years ago. on september 4th 2012 he was shot and killed by a driver while making a traffic stop in alamo. he left behind his wife and four children. his best friend remembered him as fun loving and dedicated to thechp and his family. >> his kids were his life. he loved his and loved his family even more. >> many colleagues from the 320 squad were in attendance. the stretch of 680 was did kateed to officer youngstrom. today and tomorrow you can expect to see more than 75

motorcycle police officers from various departments in california, nevada and oregon show off motorcycle skills. it goes at pierce 30 and 32. admission is free but donations go to the families of fallen officers. the number of recruits the falling short of expectations. the academy will have just 29 cadets compared to the goal of 60 recruits per academy. the last class at had -- had only 29 recruits. president obama today vowed to dismantle the islamic state and they agree on taking swift action which he coulded a savage nation. he made the remarks before leaving a two day nato summit

california has joined 14 other states where same section marijuana is legal to ask the supreme court to overcome other states bans. 17 other states filed a separate brief. both sides -- states are arguing the need for guidance from the high court in such a rapidly changing legal environment. >> all states will know how to move forward whether or not they are upheld the states will have a clear path to walk. >> yesterday a u.s. appeals court in chicago ruled that gay

marriage bans in wisconsin and indiana are unconstitutional. justices will sit down for the first session on september 29th. chevron agreed to pay for air quality violations. the settlement is for vapor leaks, uncovered drains and excess hydro general sulfide and fuel gas. it does not include that sickened hundreds of people. air quality officials say violations have been corrected and didn't cause any significant emissions. 41-year-old man facing assault charges. this cell phone video shows a man in the striped shirt. police have now identified as alevo. he claims he thought the elderly man exposed himself to his son.

it happened on labor day in san jose. police in one neighborhood are making a point to ticket drivers who posed a threat to pedestrians. this is the wrong video here. we'll continue telling you about that story. we road along with an officer and the captain says his officers responded to 317 calls for injury collisions in the past 12 months. they say keeping people safe is a top priority. now, police say on a recent day they issued 12 citations in 30 minutes to drivers not stopping for pedestrians at one intersection. continuing now with a story across the pacific, lava is flowing on hawaii's big island. it prompted the observatory to change the warning from a watch

san carlos avenue. firefighters from near by redwood city posted this video on twitter. they got the call this morning and it took them almost an hour to free the animal from the netting. the buck who appeared uninjured scampered off. outside our doors the clouds are clearing and we have a fabulous looking afternoon at least for most of us. we'll continue with this typical summer-like pattern as we head into your weekend. giving you a look across the bay there you can see a bit of patchy fog. for the most part we have mostly sunny skies, a shot over the east bay pointing to the west. you can see low cloud cover and fog as we work forwards -- towards the west coast. mostly cloudy conditions but for the most of us partly cloudy to mostly sunny. this is how it will go for your weekend. we'll have morning clouds followed by afternoon sun. mild to warm around the bay and

our inland communities will be warm to just nearing a bit hot. we are talking near 90 degrees for the inland communities. outside right now we have fog along the coastline just inside the bay. partly cloudy to mostly sunny at this time. it will continue to dissipate into the afternoon. the winds will remain offshore. right now fairfield reporting 16 miles per hour. could increase just a bit as we get into the spend of condition on your friday. a beautiful pattern for outdoor lunch. along the coast mid-60s in san francisco. a few areas just lightly cooler than yesterday. by a few degrees we may not notice so much.

investors seeking safety leading stocks back into positive territory following a morning slump followed by a disappointing august jobs report. taking a look at the big board the dow is up about 40 points over 17,000. apple announced plans to beef up security measures days after nude celebrity photos were leaked. it will now use e-mail and push notifications when someone tries to change password or connect an unfamiliar device to an apple account. hackers were able to get into

photo collisions through fishing attempts and by guessing passwords. notifications will begin in about two weeks. amazon using u.s. toastal service on a trial basis. the 60 day experiment started the first week of august. small grocery items are shipped in insulated bags to the customer's doorstep. because the items are delivered in insulated bags delivery trucks do not have to be refrigerated. they could expand the service beyond the city and go nationwide. this will be the first test of the stadium's new turf which is the third layer of grass since it opened last month. crews ripped up the original sod because of complaints about unsafe footing. tomorrow's match starting tomorrow night between mexico and chile. and we will be tracking any
