tenth street. paul, what do you have? >> reporter: for the last hour the roadway has been shut down as they are rallying, but it's been very peaceful, no problems with the police, no problems with the protesters out here but they say they're just having a little bit -- they don't have a problem with the training the officers are getting just the type of training they are getting during urban shield. >> it's a full-scale training exercise for first responders. some of the tactics and the military-style equipment has come under fire from those in the community. >> the military training is not for the community. it's for the war. >> reporter: they say teaching the officers this is unnecessary. they safer say ferguson

is a perfect example of that. officers say it's a shame things have come to this but they're fighting a new type of battle. >> there's violent people out there and there's people that want to do harm to us and the citizens, and because of that we have to be properly equipped and trained. >> >> reporter: this is something that san jose police are addressing. the department is returning the surplus -- [indiscernible] -- and you can see the protest is still going on. the people say they're going to start taking to the streets. broadway is closed, and it appears it's shut down to 14th, so a good distance of broadway closed down. as you can see, people are peaceful, and officers will be out here all night long.

you can see down the street here, and it's down past to 14th. the people here say they're going to start walking and marching down and we'll be there every step of the way and bring you more as it develops. i want to say it's been very peaceful. they're saying they are going to city hall and we'll be there and bring you the latest as it develops. to shoot or not to shoot in it's a life or death question that may get harder for bay area police departments. this week officers in the east bay confiscated several fake- looking assault rifles. >> reporter: it's a concerning discovery for the police because the weapons have the barrels of the gun covered with an orange tip making it look fake but they are in fact

real and it's that that has lawmaker lawmakers concerned. >> reporter: two of them look fake but they are authentic. >> the probably is the orange plastic tip. >> reporter: they mimic a toy gun and they can be dangerous weapons in the wrong hands. >> this orange tip indicates it's not real, when in fact this is. >> reporter: police found the guns inside a home and arrested three men they say were connected to an illegal grow house nearby. >> i didn't believe there was such a thing that exists. >> a criminal who wants to make this gun look fake and just hesitate. >> reporter: they say it put law enforcement at risk in a shoot-don't shoot 'situation. >> the officers will be forced to shoot regardless if it has

the plastic tip on it. >> reporter: the proposed bill was written after the shooting death of a teenager, lopez, killed by a sheriff's deputy who mistook his fake gun for a real one. in this case, if these real guns were used on police, even the slightest hesitation could just a tragedy. >> reporter: we have called others to see if they encountered similar things and they say it's not been the case so far and they hope it stays that way. >> today authorities identify add woman who burned body was found last thursday as a san jose mother of four. she was 35-year-old teresa calocci. investigators are looking for information about any cars or people seen in the area near

morgan hill last thursday. >> we want to focus the investigation on where she was the last several hours and several days before she was found dead. >> today we found people posting photos and writing condolence messages on facebook about their friend. one of her close friends from missouri said she was, quote, in a bad relationship and wanted to come home. her brother told us he didn't know if she was in danger. the number of recruits is short of expectations for the academy. they'll have just 29 i am comparison to 60. the last recruiting class also had 29. they are facing a staffing problem. fire crews are still on the scene following yesterday's 5-alarm fire. two firefighters

that hospitalized have now returned to duty. they were treated after breathing in some of the smoke from that fire. the smoke blew all across the mission district and the smoke is still lingering. we have more at the scene. >> reporter: right now we have just learned that demolition crews are here on the scene. they've been talking to firefighters here. and they say the building must come down because of so much damage. firefighters are keeping onlookers across the street. >> i smelled it like maybe two blocks down. i'm surprised it's not worse. >> during the fire there was a lot of thick, toxic smoke due to the materials inside the building. >> reporter: the hot fire began about 1:00 yesterday afternoon and two firefighters were injured and briefly hospitalized. the heat and

boxes of goods prevented any firefighting inside. this afternoon many people said they'll miss this store. they call it an anchor on this block. >> a lot of people depended on this, you know, smaller prices, you know, better deals. >> reporter: owners toured the building with firefighters who said demolition is on a fast-track. >> they want to get the streets opened up and impinges the streets and businesses in the area. >> reporter: we are live and we've learned the owner of the company will begin shoring up the building tonight, empties the contents and then demolish it over the next several days, and this will keep this block of mission street closed for the next several days. it will be a painful problem for the buses here, but it will allow firefighters and investigators to find out what caused the

fire. live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2. >> investigators are trying to determine if a burning candle was the cause of an early-morning apartment fire in san francisco. the fire broke out in the building on corbett avenue. nobody was hurt. firefighters managed to keep the fire contained to the unit on the fifth floor where it started. the people who live in that apartment told neighbors that it was a candle that started the fire. >> they told me they were very soarry, and the -- very sorry. >> they are looking into reports about the candle but regardless of what caused it, they believe it was an accident. $950 million of the proposed $1.4 billion fine stemming from the pipeline blast is earmarked

for the state's fund. the state senator said most of the money should go to pipeline upgrades. p-g & e has announced plans to appeal. this interchange is now dedicated to this police officer who was killed. the widow and four children watched the unveiling. the 37-year-old officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop two years ago at this interchange. his partner said he was always giving. >> the conversation we had, our last conversation, and that was him offering help to me, and the key word there is "offering" help. he didn't have to. he did. >> the memorial was packed with family and friends, including many fellow officers. they remembered him as fun-loving

and devoted to his family, his job, and his church. 49ers' defensive tackle ray mcdonald will play in sunday's season opener against the cowboys. harbaugh's announcement came one week after he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence against his pregnant fee fiancee. he said he has the lib liberty. police have said mcdonald's fiancee had visible injuries although no charges have been filed. a downtown store owner has been arrested on suspect [indiscernible-loud suspicion of dealing selling crack cocaine. his store is located on east santa clara street. investigators say they watched for a month before

making an arrest. this area is under a flash-flood warning because of strong winds and low humidity. this fire has burned through more than 82,000 acres. it's about 19% contained. no structures have been destroyed or damaged. closer to home in lake county, cal fire investigators are still looking for the cause of this calistoga fire. flames have destroyed two structures. continuing coverage of the earthquake. several more creeks have dramatically increased their wart flow since the earthquake two weeks ago. this is video from a creek in vallejo a week ago. scientists say shock waves open up fractures

in bedrock allowing ground water to flow rapidly into surface streams. using drones without a warrant is on the governor's desk. police concurrently obtained recordings from helicopters and street cameras and atm machines without a warrant. advocates say just because drones are a new type of technology, it doesn't make them any different from other devices. >> so if you don't need it for a helicopter or if you don't need it because you're standing on the sidewalk, we don't think it makes sense for you to have to obtain a warrant in order to use one of these new technology vehicles. >> they say the legislation is premature since there's not many agencies that currently have them. police using social media to fight prostitution. we'll tell you about the consequences for people caught up in it. a ceremony in east bay honoring a group of ordinary

the south san francisco police department is warning the community about a scam. police say several victims have received calls from somebody who claims they owe money to the federal government. caller says the victim must pay immediately using a prepaid card to avoid being arrested. police are reminding people, stay on alert if asked for personal information over the phone. police are investigating two robberies that may have been committed by the same man. the robberies happened about two miles apart, the first on

monday at a walgreens store, and then on wednesday at a 7-11 on central avenue. here's a look at the suspect caught on surveillance on both occasions. police say the man handed the clerks a note saying he had a gun and he demanded money. the man may also be linked to incidents in san mateo and san jose. in richmond the police department is using a new weapon in prostitution, facebook. 11 men are learning a hard way, with a very lasting public impact. >> reporter: 23rd street in richmond has a history of prostitution. last night police conducted a sting in which undercover officers help bust 11 men for solicitation. >> we had a wire which a lot of the conversations between the

undercover officer and the the john is recorded. they didn't know that today their faces would be on the department's facebook page . >> they use it to shame and embarrass the suspects. >> reporter: we did a story six months ago about this. we talked to this individual about how bad it was on 23rd street. he says since then it has improved. >> traffic has slowed down, very few that come by here during the day. the traffic on ohio as quieted down. >> reporter: the demand now is clearly still there which is why police still use that tool in hopes that it will detour other suspects. that solicitation is a misdemeanor and they argue posting the photos is too harsh a punishment that lasts for too long a time. >> we'll take the photos down

after a period of time. >> reporter: richmond police are warning any potential john the pictures they post are as unflattering as it gets. nine otherwise ordinary people were honored today for great acts of bravery and kindness. the red cross alameda heros breakfast took place this morning. the heros are nominated by community members to acknowledge people showing outstanding encourage and dedication and character. this individual heard cries for help in a park and spotted a boy in trouble in the water. >> i started running and he got lucky. i went straight for the kid. >> reporter: ktvu was one of the sponsors. similar awards will be given out across the rest of the bay area counties.

a massive yacht has been cruising across the bay area that's been having people call ktvu looking for answer, the mystery. we caught a glimpse of it.
