>> reporter: we're following developing news out of san francisco this morning of an accident involving a muni light railcar and a pedestrian. coming up we'll give you an update. there is a very real possibility that the animal was attacking this little boy as he would attack normal prey. >> a 6-year-old child becomes the victim of a terrifying mountain lion attack near a south bay winery. the desperate search taking place right now. this is a tense morning for many parents in the north bay school. the big announcement expected today involving their kids that could send some parents scrambling. also, a critical shortage directly affecting life-or- death scenarios in san

san jose dealing with mostly sunny skies. 68 at noon. 75ish. it should be closer to 83. this will be the coolest day of the week. the low clouds are in place helped along by this little low here. that's it. it's also directing most of the remains of what was norbert away from us. walnut creek, 52. 54 santa rosa. 57ing half moon bay. san jose, is 58. 57 livermore. concord, 55. if you thought it's cool out there, it is. 28 gusts to 33. that's a roaring delta breeze. west at napa, west at concord, west at concord, west at livermore. low clouds will be slow to burn off. if you are off to the sierra, you can see the thunderstorm activity popping up here pretty good. it looks like a morning event. by the afternoon, most of that should push off into nevada. high clouds south and east. plenty of those in southern california. things are far below average. 70s, 80s for some. 60s for others.

here's sal. we have a lot of slow traffic out there to begin this mod morning commute. starting off with a look at the bay bridge backed up beyond the macarthur maze for about a 25 to 30-minute drive into san francisco. no problems on the bridge. in fact, once you get on the bridge, it looks okay. you will be waiting for a bit at the toll plaza. also looking at the nimitz freeway, heading south out of san leandro and into hayward all the way down to fremont, we had a couple of earlier problems as you drive down to the fremont area, we've had heavy traffic from the altamont pass from 680 and then from 680 out of pleasanton heading down the sunol grade has been very slow. this is kind of like the ordinary traffic now. it doesn't get a lot of play. but you need to know that it's out there. san jose, northbound 280 traffic. that's moderate. it will slow down a little bit as you reach highway 17. we're continuing to follow developing news in san francisco where a muni train has hit a man who was walking. the accident happened around 5:15 this morning at third

street and carol avenue in the city's payview district. brian flores is live now with how this crash is affecting muni riders and what we're learning about the man who was hit. brian? >> reporter: hi, sal. good morning. this is the t third line affected. you can see several police investigators. muni investigators. also it's the light rail that hit the pedestrian. they are piecing together what happened. from what we know, this accident happened around 5:15 this morning, as you mentioned, sal. a spokesperson from muni says a man came in contact with a southbound train. he apparently had major facial and head injuries as a result. they say he was taken to san francisco general hospital in critical condition. he may also have possible leg injuries as well. here at the scene is a walker. it's unclear whether he was using it, whether he was in the crosswalk or not. we understand a police

spokesperson is on their way to provide more details as to that. for commuters that take it line. mta says shuttles have been established for commuters. the line is being switched north of here. no trains are moving through here. cars are moving slowly through here as well. a viewer on the approach, there's only one lane going in each direction. continuing coverage for the search for a mountain lion that attacked a little boy. fish and wildlife say the mountain lion attacked the boy like he was a deer. janine de la vega is in that area where in the last 30 minutes, the search for that mountain lion started back up. good morning, janine.

>> reporter: good morning. yes, fish and game wardens and tracking dogs are out. they are miles into the trail here behind picchetti winery looking for the mountain lion. yesterday, the tracking dogs were able to find the lion's tracks but country pick up a scent. they are hoping to have better luck today. now, yesterday, park rangers and fish and game are out -- were outside here. they know that this animal, they are searching for it, it is aggressive and dangerous. they want to get rid of it because it was treating a 6- year-old boy as prey. yesterday, the boy was hiking on with his family on the zinfandel trail. his parents had to physically fight the big cat off the boy and it ended up following the family back to their car. the boy suffered lacerations to his head and shoulders and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. he's now in fair condition. authorities will use their specially trained dogs to help

them today. >> first we have to find the trail. once we get them on the trail, we can hopefully get the animals to pursue the scent as they can go along and catch up to the lion. >> reporter: mountain lion sightings are common. attacks on humans are rare. authorities say because this mountain lion has proven to be a threat, it will be shot and killed. fish and game will test the dna with the dna from the clothing to see if it's the same mountain lion that attacked. train out here near picchetti winery -- trails out here near picchetti winely will be closed because of safety. the department of fish and game says mountain lion attacks are rare in california. in fact, since 1986 there have been just 13 incidents involving 14 people. the most recent was in 2012 when a 63-year-old man was attacked in nevada county. three attacks were deadly. the last person killed was a 35- year-old man at whiting ranch

park in orange county in 2004. fish and game say if you see a mountain lion, do not run. instead, make some noise and wave your arms in order to appear bigger. 7:07. we're still following developing news from chicago, where four children were killed overnight in a deadly apartment building fire. the -- this happened on the south side. a 5-year-old child was killed along with two boys, ages 10 and 14, and a teenaged girl. the children's mother and her boyfriend were critically hurt. two of the children were found inside of a closet. firefighters say it appears one of the older children died trying to protect a younger child. well, this morning, the 700- acre wildfire still is burning inside yosemite national park. that fire forced the evacuation of one of yosemite's biggest attractions. a san jose family tweeted this photo you are looking at showing some of the 100 hikers

on half dome waiting there for a helicopter rescue yesterday. that iconic peak is almost 5,000 feet above the yosemite valley. >> we weren't sure what the fire behavior was going to do. we knew there were a lot of people in the area. we just wanted to make sure that we would be able to get everybody out safely and not put them in a situation where they wouldn't be able to get out or it would be too late for them to get out. >> firefighters say lightning stagetted the fire dash started the -- firefighters say lightning started that fire. the main roads into yosemite, they are still open. firefighters are getting the upper hand on a fire outside of yosemite. this one is about ten miles east of mariposa. it's now 70% contained. full containment is expected wednesday. the fire started friday. it's burned about00 acres. the -- about 300 acres. the evacuation order has been lifted. still no word on the possible

cause. 7:09. today marks one year since a huge wildfire on mt. diablo. the morgan fire started on september 8th, 2013. it burned more than 3,000 acres near clayton. investigators determined the fire was started by a target shooter. no charges were filed. a group called nerds for nature is helping track the recovery on mt. diablo. it's asking people to take pictures of the burn areas. those images will be merged to create a crowd sourced time lapse of the recovery. if you want to take part, go to our website at ktvu.com and look under the web links section. a missing 6-year-old autistic boy was found safe at a san jose homeless camp. police are praising the person who found him. little sergio zepeda was found earlier yesterday morning when a homeless man called 911 saying the child wandered into an encampment near monterey highway and lewis road. police had been searching almost 20 hours and sergio was

found three miles away from the home. the homeless man said sergio was naked and shivering when he wandered into the homeless camp. >> they had wrapped him up in a blanket. given him food and water and it was our boy. >> family members still have lots of questions about how the boy was so far from home. but police say there's no evidence that he was abused and no foul play is suspected and police will nominate the homeless man who called 911 for a good samaritan award. 7:11. happening now -- the power is out this morning for more than 4,000 homes and businesses in the east bay. the power went out near newark and fremont just about two hours ago. pg&e doesn't know when it will be back on. that's because it's not sure yet what caused the problem but pg&e is investigating. we'll keep you posted. financial trouble for a north bay preschool. coming up at 7:30, the surprise

washington, d.c. after their summer recess and their to-do list includes passing a spending bill to prevent a federal shutdown at the end of the month. they have only a few weeks on the hill before hitting the campaign trails before the midterm elections. all 435 seats in the house are up for grabs on november 4th along with a third of the senate. some supporters of immigration reform say they feel betrayed now that president obama has decided not to take executive action on immigration until after the november election. and republicans have accused the president of caving to political pressure. in june, president obama announced plans to take executive action on immigration by the end of the summer after house republicans failed to take up a bipartisan immigration bill that had already passed the senate. >> i think it's terrible. they always use our community and believe me i'm a democrat. but i'm tired of waiting. >> it's time for him to comply

and actually do something about this now. not tomorrow. now. >> analysts say the decision is welcome comed news for -- welcomed news for some democratic senators in close races. the white house says the president is still expected to take up the issue of immigration by the end of the year. 7:15. 2 investigates uncovered a high- pressured telemarketing campaign. it targeted some of the bay area's most vulnerable people. we discovered a company that calls spash-speaking immigrants with a very aggressive sales pitch to buy english-learning dvds. one oakland woman said she received a barrage of out of state phone calls demanding hundreds of dollars. when she refused to buy, she says they claimed to threaten to deport her. >> this is outrageous. i would consider it a scam.

intelligence officials, they say they now know the name of the man with the british accent we saw in the video beheading james foley. they used facial recognition technology to provide an image of the man known as john based only on his eyes. early reports named the former london rap musician as the main suspect but that's not been confirmed. it's not known if that same man carried out the execution of steven sotloff. this afternoon, a one-stof earthquake relief center is opening in napa. it's a place where people can get earthquake assistance information and connect with resources. that includes city and county building permits, financial assistance, and counseling of the center opens at 1 -- counseling. the center opens at 1:00 on first street. sal has a lot of stuff to

they should be closer about 83. sunnyvale at 75. a lot of 60s on the coast. san bruno upper 60s. low/mid-70s. woodside, palo alto and atherton, 74. fog, sun, nice. warmer takes over on wednesday and even warm to hot for some thursday and friday. well, it appears the drought is taking quite a toll on nudist colonies. the mercury news reports that lupeen dodge is dangerously close to running out of water. they are one of 15 community water districts that have less than a 60-day supply of water left. la honda and the lake berryessa resort also made the list. now, the grass on the botchy ball court at lupeen lodge is so ground and brittle that some guests have been forced to wear shoes. they say this is the state's smallest water districts and gets water from wells and a creek. 7:22.

was. they honored us. they wouldn't let us honor them. hard to keep from weeping. >> many veterans say the trip provided closure. for some it was the first time talking about the war. the fremont firefighters union raised $30,000 to help pay for the trip. >> as we approach the 13th anniversary of the september 11th attacks, the family of a new york firefighter who died that day had some special comfort, this metal bracelet commemorates michael j.auden who was killed. his son wore it. but he lost it ten years ago when he was just 11 years ago. about two weeks ago, a woman found the bracelet on a beach. she tracked down the familied a returned it. incredibly, that woman's mother who recently passed away was also a new york firefighter. 7:26. the emergency calls unanswered for more than an hour.

the critical shortage in san francisco that could be puts lives on the line. >> reporter: it's a tough situation for parents, teachers and kids at this novato preschool. that's reportedly going to close for good at the end of the day today. we'll tell you what teachers say led up to this announcement. westbound 24 traffic is moderately heavy on the way from walnut creek to oakland. but we do have some slow traffic waiting in oakland. we'll give you the drive time for the bay bridge. plenty of low clouds in place. temperatures below average. but it won't take long to warm up. we'll tell you when coming up.

service. this is a live look at the scene. muni said the man who was hit was near a crosswalk and a walker found at the scene may belong to him. san francisco police are reviewing video from onboard the train. >> we have video on board and cameras looking into what the operator saw, looking outside of the vehicle to see what the passengers saw and we have surveillance camera in the surrounding area. >> that's paul rose, muni's spokesman. the man was taken to san francisco general hospital with head and face injuries. muni riders are being put on buses, a shuttle bus in tharyia. let's. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza, you can see traffic here is backed up for a 25 to 30- minute drive time from oakland side to san francisco. and quickly, i want to take a look at the south bay map. 101 has been plagued by a couple of crashes. i would use 280. 85 is getting cloer.

280 is not that bad getting into the west valley. back to the desk. >> okay, thank you, sal. a shock for parents and teachers. a sudden announcement that a preschool in novato will close for good tomorrow. alex savidge is live with what we've learned about this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. teachers say they will be looking for another place to work and at the same time, parents will be looking for another place to send their kids. according to staff members, the bridgeport academy here will be closing at the end of the day today and it's all because of financial problems. that's what teachers tell us. they say they first figured out that something was wrong late last week when tried to cash their paychecks but couldn't. over the weekend, teachers say they got a group message from the director of this preschool. she confirmed the school would be closing after today. but the message doesn't exactly explain why. according to one teacher, to property here in novato on grant avenue is up for sale right now and teachers think

the school has been dealing with a lack of funds for quite some time. but the owner has not been up front with staff members. now parents who just paid tuition a couple of days ago are rest to find another -- left to find another school for their kids. >> it would have been nice to know a week ahead. we found out not even 24 hours ago and started going online to see what other places have open spots and trying to read more about this. >> it was all a shock to many parents. the school serves dozens of low- income families. many just found out about the closure last late night. it seems as though the director was planning to tell the parents as they arrived for school today, what would be the last day of classes at the school. we have reached out this morning to the school's director and the owner of the bridgepoint academy for a comment on this closure. we have not yet heard back but

we'll certainly let you know when we do. we're live in novato, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, alex. an apartment building fire in alameda blamed for the death of a dog and injuries to a firefighter. it happened yesterday on regent street. four families evacuated safely but two dogs were trapped in the flames. one of the dogs died but the other is expected to survive. a firefighter was also treated for minor injuries. investigators say the firefighter was caused by unattended food left on a stove. san francisco facing a critical shortage of ambulances and the situation got even worse this past week. tara moriarty, live at city hall this morning to tell us how lives are at risk. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. we have reached out to the mayor but we understand he's in mex could for work. he's unable to comment. he has not really said much about this issue. the city had to put out a 911 call for ambulances last night.

basically, meaning there were no ambulances to respond to 911 calls. the city uses its fire department ambulances and contracts with two other companies here in the city. last night, it had to call outside of that pool for the first time in its history. this isn't the first time a call for mutual aid has happened. august 30th, a dozen fire engine companies dispatched toge ms were left without any way to get patients to hospitals and wait times for ambulances were taking as long as an hour and a half. august 29th, friday night, one fire crew had to wait two hours for an ambulance. the city's standard maximum is ten minutes. back in july, we spoke to the fire chief who said that 14 new ambulances would be on the streets by the end of the year to help the problem. >> per the city policy, you can't just keep adding to the fleet. we'll retire those that are old and tired and replace them. what we need is a more reliable fleet as opposed to necessarily

a bigger fleet. >> firefighters tell us they can't wait until the end of the year. the situation is critical now. so far this year, from january through labor day, there were more than 7,000 instances where ambulances were not available for patients. those are called medic to follow calls. in that same period in 2012, there were only 1,450 calls. coming up in our next hour, we're talking to the head of the firefighters union as well as someone from the fire department about this issue to get both sides of the story. live from san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. two men are behind bars after a hit and run that killed two women and a 4-year-old boy in turlock. a woman, her daughter-in-law and her grand chirp children -- grandchildren were walking in their neighborhood saturday evening. a car veered off the road and hit them. the car then hit a nearby home. the two women died the at

scene. the boy was -- died at the scene. the boy was he pro nowbsed dead at the -- pronounced dead at the hospital. police believe alcohol and speed were a factor in the can crash. a veteran homicide detective has been taken off a case because of an affair. kathy zimmer's body was found in the back seat of a car at a san jose airport, rapped in a colorful patchwork equipment. the district attorney's office says the hayes been reassigned to another prosecutor and the case will be ready to go to trial in october. today the federal appeals court in san francisco will consider challenges to gay marriage bans in idaho, nevada

and hawaii. now, hawaii legalized same-sex marriage in december. so that appeal may be thrown out. but the 9th circuit court of appeals has scheduled two arguments on whether the bans should be struck down in idaho and nevada. the appeals court has previously ruled in favor of gay marriage, with the exception of louisiana. a judge upheld a been in that state just -- -- in sta state last week. the founder of chick fayly died. he was 93. he was deeply lee lidgeous. he always insisted that the restaurants stay closed on sundays. two years ago his son dan said he supported the bubbly cal definition of a family unit. that attracted protests by gay

light to proceed to the platform here. the pedestrian was near the crosswalk at the time. mta also says the light rail was moving slowly because it was approaching the station. it happened at 5:15. a man came in contact with a southbound train. apparently hit the front side part of the train. he apparently had major facial and head injuries as a result. he was taken to san francisco general hospital. the lastest we heard he was in critical condition. >> at this point, it appears the pedestrian made contact with the side of the train. we're gonna work with the video and work with the police to find out what happened here. >> reporter: also at the scene was a walker. it's unclear whether the man was using it. police took that and some clothing for examination. there was one passenger on the train as well as the conductor.

it appears the line has been moving for ten minutes or so. but the bus bridge will remain here for a few minutes to kind of supplement the morning. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> happening now, a search team is out looking for a mountain lion they consider dangerous to the public. it attacked a 6-year-old boy yesterday afternoon on a hiking trail near cupertino. janine de la vega is there now with an update on this morning's search. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. well, searchers have been out here for the past two hours. it's very hilly out here on montebello road. there's a lot of brush and steep terrain. so far, they haven't spotted the mountain lion yet. yesterday afternoon, two families were hiking on the zinfandel trail behind picchetti winery. they had hiked a mile up the path and just after they turned to head back, the mountain lion pounced. it attacked a 6-year-old boy

from behind and dragged him off into a brushy area. his parents had to physically fight the cat off the boy. we're told the animal followed the family back to their car. the boy suffered lacerations and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. he initially was in serious condition. but he's been upgraded to fair. during their search for the lion last night, tracking dog found its trail but couldn't pick up a scent. >> if you look behind us, the dense vegetation, this is very similar to what it looks like in the field. the tracking conditions are difficult. thankfully, it's not so hot. the heat makes -- the heat diminishes the tracking conditions a little bit. we have a little bit of cool weather in our favor. >> reporter: if authorities find the animal, it will be shot and killed. they will use dna testing from it and the boy's clothing to make sure it's the right animal. while mountain lion sightings are commons attacks on humans

fire around half dome. now, that fire forced the evacuation of one of yosemite's biggest tourist attractions. a san jose family tweeted out this photo here showing some of the 100 hikers on half dome waiting for a helicopter rescue yesterday. that iconic peak is almost 5,000 feet above the yosemite valley. >> we weren't sure what the fire behavior was gonna do. we knew there was a lot of people in the area. we just wanted to make sure we were able to get everybody out safely and not put them in a situation where they wouldn't be able to get out or it would be too late for them to get out. >> the firefighters say lightning started the fire several weeks ago and over the weekend, it just grew dramatically. the main roads into yosemite, they are still open. firefighters are getting the upper hand on a fire outside of yosemite. this one's about ten miles east of mariposa. it's now 70% contained.

here is a video showing ray rice and janae palmer walking into an elevateert. they are at an atlantic city casino. once inside the elevate, they start to argue. then the fight gets physical. we won't show you the most violent part of the video. it's very graphic. previously released video shows ray rice dragging miss palmer out of the elevator. when that was made public, the nfl suspended rice for two games. well, in response to this new video this morning, the nfl told tmz this morning that "we requested from law enforcement any and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator. that video was not made available to us and no one in our offices has seen it until today." now, following the ray rice incident, the nfl announced a new policy against domestic

there is a lot of moisture here. it will stay east and south of us. very slow to warm up on the temperatures. 57 fairfield, concord, livermore, san jose. santa rosa, 54. 5 p san francisco, half moon bay. if you thought there was a chill in the air, there is. a strong delta breeze all morning long has not let up. a lot of gray here. it will be slow to burn off for some. the thunderstorm activity popping up in the sierra early. i mean, they are already developing pretty fast here. the lightning is not good. the rain is. let's hope we get some of that. southern california, arizona just amazing rain. fog, sun, breezy. higher clouds. they are there. not right here. 70s for many. even some low 80s. here's sal. we are continuing to follow developing news in the bayview district where a man was hit by a muni train. the scene on third at carol avenue cleared a short time ago but the crash affected service on the t line for two hours

this morning. muni says the man hit was near a crosswalk and a walker found at the scene may belong to him. san francisco police are reviewing video from on board the train. the man was rushed to san francisco general hospital in critical condition. we want to lack at the east bay -- look at the east bay where we had a crash at 88 at tennyson. it's clearing involving a motorcycle. then a crash southbound at decoto. this combination and at lot of slow traffic has made this commute slow. if you are driving here, give yourself extra time, it's taking almost an hour to drive from 238 to thornton avenue. as we move down to the south bay, 101 is in terrible shape. 280 is not too bad getting into the valley. i couldn't -- i would use 280 instead of 101. the toll plaza, a delay getting into san francisco from the oakland side. back to the desk. san francisco facing a

critical shortage of ambulances. the situation got worse this past week. tara moriarty is joining us live in san francisco with some fighting words from the fire chief and there is a new report that may fuel this controversy. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. yes. this is a report by ems jeff myers asking the chief for 72 new hires back in the spring. we know the fire chief asked for less than half of that number from city hall. now firefighters are angry because they why understaffed -- they are understaff and don't have enough ambulances. this was the first time they had to call 911 for mutual aid. it happened over labor day weekend and last night. the city uses the fire department ambulances and contracts with two other companies. recently had it to call outside of the pool. august 30th a dozen fire engine companies had been dispatched. they were left without any way

to get patients to hospitals. wait time for ambulances were taking as long as an hour and a half. august 29th friday night one fire crew had to wait two hours for an ambulance. the city's standard maximum is ten minutes. >> it's pressing upon the firefighters and the paramedics that this situation is getting graver and graver. >> reporter: you want the mayor to do something about it now. >> we need help from the mayor. but we need to know how bad the crisis is. we need to find out the truth and i'm not sure they are getting that. >> in a statement released from the san francisco fire department, there's no question that the system as a whole is strained. with 16 new ambulance personnel we do expect to see a little bit of relief. i would like to emphasize that the engine crews have medical personnel on board that performs basic and advanced life intervents. so far this year from january through labor day, there were

more than 7,000 instances where ambulances were not available for patients. those are called medic to follow calls. in that same period, in 2012, there were only 1,450 calls. so obviously, the problem has gotten out of hand. and now the fire department asking the mayor and the city for help. live from san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a shock for some parents and teachers this morning. the sudden announcement that a preschool in novato will reportedly close for good tomorrow. ktvu's alex savidge is live in novato. alex, you just spoke with the school's director. >> reporter: i did. the director of this preschool says there's just no money to keep the doors open after today. the bridgepoint academy will be closed. it has come as a shock to parents and teachers. teachers will have a find another place to work and parents are scrambling to find another school to send their kids to. >> i'm really sad.

you know, i feel bad for the teachers. i feel bad for the kids. this is a big family here and it's just -- it's just a little bit disappointing. >> reporter: this preschool here in novato serves almost 50 low-income families. staff members say bridgepoint has been dealing with financial issues for years and they knew the place was up for sale. but when teachers couldn't cash their paychecks at the end of lack week, that's when they realized that something was really wrong. over the weekend, the staff got a group message letting them know that the place would close at the end of the day on monday. many teachers believe the owner of the preschool has not been up front about the financial troubles and they feel blindsided by all of this. the director says she has no choice, though, but to shut the doors? >> there's no money. the teachers and i are all in the same boat. we all were unable to cash our

paychecks on friday because there's no money. i don't handle the finances. i have nothing to do with this. my priority is making sure the teachers get their money. >> reporter: and at the same time, parents are also now looking for a refund. they just paid their tuition for this month a couple of days ago. i reached out this morning to the owner of bridge point academy looking for a comment trying to better understand the reason for the sudden closure. we're put in a call to her. put in a message. we'll let you know when we hear back. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. 8:37. 2 investigates uncovered a high- pressure telemarketing campaign targeting some of the bay area's most vulnerable people. we discovered a company that calls spash-speaking immigrants with an aggressive sales pitch to buy english-learning dvds. but some say it didn't end

there. one oakland woman said she received out of state phone call demanding hundreds of dollars. when she refused to buy, she claims they threatened to deport her. >> this is outrageous. i would consider it a scam, taking advantage of a vulnerable woman. >> today, at 5:00, see what happens when 2 investigates finally gets that salesman on the phone to answer ktvu's questions. 8:38. an apartment building fire in alameda blamed for the death of a dog, also injuries to a firefighter. it happened on regent stret yesterday afternoon. four families evacuated safely but two dogs were trapped in the flames. one of the dogs died. the other is expected to survive. firefighter was also treated for minor injuries. investigators say the fire was caused by food left unattended on a stove. today, the federal appeals

court in san francisco will consider challenges to gay marriage bans in idaho, nevada and hawaii. hawaii did legalize same-sex marriage in september. so that appeal may be dismissed. but the 9th circuit court of appeals has scheduled two hours of arguments on whether bans should be struck down in idaho or nevada. the appeals court has previously ruled in favor of gay marriage so have federal judges across the country, except in louisiana where a judge upheld a ban in that state just last week. new this morning, a new addition to the royal family has been announced. ktvu's pam cook is in the studio with a surprising part of the news and an anticipated nickname for the baby. good morning, pam. >> good morning. well, buckingham palace confirming that the duchess of cambridge and prince william expecting their second child. now, the police department tweeted out this photo at oxford university. kate was supposed to be with

william at the event but reportedly not feeling well. the police department tweeted out the vip has arrived, hashtag royalfamily, hashtag dukecambridge. the official announcement came via twitter. this came from the monarchy. the duke and duchess very pleased to announce that the duchess is expecting their second child. and david dammy ron already in with his congratulations and tweeted out, many can brach lakeses to the duke and duchess of cambridge. i'm delighted that they are expecting another baby. the timing of the announcement was a bit of a surprise. kate middleton not even three months along in her pregnancy, the reason for her announcement is because she's suffering, once again, from severe morning sickness. the office for the couple says kate is being treated at kensington palace. she also suffered from this during her first pregnancy with for instance george who just

we're still following developing news in san francisco's bayview district. early this morning a man was hit by a muni train. it happened on third street and carol avenue. this did affect service on the t-line for about two hours. the muni says the man who was hit by near a crosswalk and a walker found at the scene, it may belong to him. that man was rushed to san francisco general hospital listed in critical condition. this morning a 700-acre wildfire still is burning inside yosemite national park. the fire forced one of yosemite's biggest tourist attractions to be evacuated. a san jose family tweeted this photo showing some of the 100 ike hikers on -- hikers on half dome waiting there for a helicopter to rescue them yesterday. right now, there is a search for a mountain lion, one that attacked a 6-year-old boy on a hiking trail behind the picchetti winery near

cupertino. that child suffered scratches and puncture wounds and is recovering. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live near the hiking trail. what's the latest on the hunt for that mountain lion? >> reporter: good morning. no sightings of the mountain lion yet. but they are ready for a full day of searching. the last attack on a human from a mountain lion in california was back in 2012. they searched for six days and theferrer found it. they want to put a lot of effort in tracking down this animal because of the danger. park rangers know this animal is aggressive and watt to get rid of it because it was treating a 6-year-old as prey. the family was hiking when the mountain lion came from behind and dragged the boy off into the brush. his parents had to physically fight the big cat off him and the cat ended up following the family back to their car. the boy suffered lacerations to

its head and shoulders and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. he's now in fair condition. the authorities are using their specially trained dogs to help them track down the lion scent. >> they could potentially work all day into the evening hours until it gets dark. we may not even see them. at this point, they are gonna do their best to identify and track down the lion. >> mountain lion sightings are common. attacks on humans are rare. when they get close, they are tranquilized. but because this mountain lion is a threat, it will be shot and killed. they will use dna to see if it's the same mountain lion. the trails out here near picchetti winery will remain closed for public safety. reporting live from cupertino, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. as expected, 49ers' defensive tackle ray mcdonald started against the cowboys in dallas during the season opener. he took the field one week after his arrest on domestic
