now at noon, oakland police are hoping surveillance cameras captured a morning home invasion in the city's laurel district. we're hearing from residents who live in the area as police continue to search for one robber. last month's napa earthquake forcing dozens of inmates into the county jail to transfer. the damage the quake caused and what officials fear inmates have might have done with peeling parts of the building. and a wildfire raining in southern california. why it's so important for firefighters to get a handle on it so quickly because of

today's conditions. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. a frightening morning for a man and woman in oakland's laurel neighborhood after they were held at gunpoint in a home- invasion robbery. ktvu's alex savidge is live with the key evidence the investigators have to go on. alex? >> reporter: tori, good afternoon to you. surveillance cameras did capture this early-morning crime, according to police. a man was heading out for work leavings his home this morning when confronted by at least two armed roners who came up -- robbers who came up to him while he was getting on his motorcycle. those men forced the victim back inside his house. the man and woman who live at this home on bayo street were shaken by this early-morning home invasion. police say neither were hurt. the 911 calls came in around 5:30 this moving. officers got here fast enough to arrest one the robbers nears the house. but -- near the house. but a second robber poelt --

bolted out the back door and ran through neighbors to get away. >> i was guess he was happening the fence. sounded like the gun went off zblrkts right after the robbery, officers scoured the neighborhood with k-9s but never made any more arrests. police are hoping surveillance cameras will help them track down the criminals. >> there is a lot of videos in the area. we're hoping that will help us identify and locate the other suspects. >> reporter: the early-morning search had neighbors on edge. none of the nearby schools were locked down but police say at laurel elementary the kids were kept inside just to be safe. oakland police haven't put out any descriptions of the people they are still looking for this afternoon. but they do say police are fairly confident they will be able to capture and track down all of the people involved in

this disturbing crime. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, alex. well, police need your help identifying two men suspected of a home invasion in fremont. investigators released these surveillance photos. they say the men kicked in a side garage door of the victim's home on the morning of august 12th. once inside the home, police say the men forced the victim to empty his safe at gunpoint. about an hour after the home invasion, a black ford fusion similar to this one dropped off one of the suspects at a bank in san jose. police say the suspects used the victim's debit card at five different south bay locations. police are investigating a brutal assault on a woman that led to her death. homicide detectives are looking into several leads and questioning several people of interest. jang joins us live from -- janine de la vega joins us live from san jose to tell us where

they are in the investigation and also community reaction. >> reporter: we're here on 15th street. this is where a woman's body was found. we were told by law enforcement that she was violently attacked. her body was left mangled on the sidewalk. you can see there's crime technicians. they are still picking up evidence on the sidewalk. right now, detectives are back at the station trying to squeeze information out of the people they took into custody. police sift through piles of evidence. homeless sleep and headache out in the area -- hang out in the area. they pump information about a woman who was killed here. >> she's harmless. i can't imagine someone would hurt her. it's crazy. >> there appears to be a lady laying on the sidewalk. i can see she's -- i don't know. there's blood running down in the sidewalk in the gutter now. it looks bad. >> reporter: police at 2:30 a.m., a transient walking in the area found the woman face down on the sidewalk. officers arrived 57 found she

had been attacked -- and found she had been attacked. she was pronounced dead at the scene. >> there's trauma and blood. she's wearing clothes. we don't know if there's stab wounds or gunshot wounds. >> reporter: officers roped off the area, which is close to highway 101 and started to can vance for witnesses and evidence -- canvass for witnesses and -- and evidence. we were told three people of interest were taken into custody for questioning. police search for a motive and the circumstances that led up to the killing. those who work in the area say it can be rough and crime happens among the homeless population. >> is it surprising? you have the element. there's bound to be trouble. >> reporter: and back out here live, later on in the morning, police had roped off this carl's junior you are looking, which is across the street from the homicide scene because they found a bloody paper towel and a trail through the drive-

through. they are unsure if it's related. just as a precaution, they did collect evidence here. again, all of that needs to be tested to see if it's related. this is the city's 26th homicide of the year. still no arrest. we just checked in with police. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. new details on the shooting of a security guard back in march. officers opened fire on the man after he allegedly pointed a taser gun at them. now, the medical examiner's report has been released. it indicates that the man's taser had been discharged and that marijuana was in his system. the report also says that he had a history of mental health issues but refused to take medication. he had more than a dozen gunshot wounds according to the report. crews are battling a new wildfire in southern california. we've been watching flames race up a mountaintop in silverado canyon in the cleveland

national fore-- foree. that's in round -- forest. that's in orange county. the fire has burned 200 acres since it started before 11:00 a.m. the fire is burning in exemtrily -- extremely rugged terrain. record heat is expected this weekend but winds are calm. president obama has declared the napa earthquake a major disaster. the declaration makes federal funding available to the state and to local and tribal governments in napa and solano counties. it's estimated that last month's 6.0 quake did more than $400 million in damage. in his letter requesting help, governor browne estimated the statement had $80 million in costs eligible for reimbursemented. and barbara boxer released this statement "i thank the question for his swift response in approving a declaration for california which will help our

communities rebuild after this devastating earthquake. it's critical that the administration move quickly to approve individual assistance to help families affected by the quake get back on their feet." at the county jail, dozens of inmates are being forced to transfer because of earthquake damage. jail officials say the move has not happened yet. no one was allowed inside except staff 157bd inmates -- staff and inmates. ktvu has learned the worst damage is in the hallway that goes from medium to high risk offenders. that's where the wall separates from the floor more than a foot. officials say engineers have deemed the building structurally sound. there are 264 inmates there. 60 of whom are being transferred. >> initially 20, 21 female inmates that are going to solano county and very soon. as you can imagine, we don't give the exact dates for safety and security reasons when we're moving the inmates.

but we approximately -- another 30, 40 male inmates approximately will be going to solano county. >> napa county officials say the major issue was the crumbling concrete walls. when staff noticed inmates were peeling away parts of the wall, they realized they could use those parts as weapons. one of the bay area's most important seismic safety efforts is underway in the east bay hills. massive water mains almost 100 years old are being replaced before a major earthquake strikes. tom vacar spent the morning on site and shows us the work. >> reporter: in the oaklands hills, east bay mud is replacing the aqua ducts. three water main pipelines 4.5 in die am mill ter and another 2-foot under pressure. >> these pipes date back to the '30s. they are rivet odd steel.

>> it's not just that the pipelines serve 800,000 people. they why just a few feet away from the hayward fault, a fearsome fault that could -- fearsome fault that could destroy them. >> 50% of our pipes are more than 50 years old. some are 100 years old. >> reporter: as an engineering feat, it's remarkable because it's happening in small areas completely surrounded by homes, highways, railways that were not here when the pipes were first laid. but no services will be lost because the existing pipes will be decommissioned as the new ones come on line. east. bay mud expects to complete this in a year. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. some drivers in walnut creek being wrongly ticketed

genetic tests have confirmed that the mountain lion state of wild officials killed this week was the same mountain lion that attacked a 6- year-old on sunday. it did not have rabies. this follows another mountain lion spotting just before so:340 on -- before 10:30 on devonshire boulevard. in that instance, as resident reported a mountain lion standing over a dead deer. deputies did not find the cat. the city of walnut creek is working to fix a glitch in parking meter sensors that's leading to innocent drivers getting tickets. the issue is with the in-ground sensors that will tell the meter when the vehicle leaves the spot. it appears some of those sensors are too sensitive.

the city says a large trucking by or a car parked too close can trip the sensor. when a meter is reset, the time goes off showing no time left and that can lead to a parking ticket. >> you end up coming out with a ticket. you have no idea what happened. it's a little frustrating. >> the city says it's following up with every complaint it receives to ensure a ticket is reversed if it was wrongly issued. a single car crash in richmond sent two people to the hospital overnight. it happened at 11:00 on san pablo avenue just south of hilltop drive. police say a driver lost control and crossed all of the lanes before plowing through a fence and hitting a tree. two people in the car were airlifted to the hospital in serious condition. we're getting a new look at what happens to guns recovered by the oakland police department. a company has been melting scrap metals for years. it's been used for high rises

in san francisco and levi stadium in san francisco. the oakland police department uses the facility to melt down hundred of weapons used to commit crimes. the guns are put into metal boxes, locked and sealed before being transported to the facility under tight security. >> these are weapons that can be on somebody and hurt somebody innocent. i'm glad to see them go. >> while most of the guns were seized by officers, others were turned in during the buyback program. developing news on the search for a pilot after two u.s. navy jets collided over the pacific ocean. the jet were pop rating off the -- operating off the u.s.s. carl vinson. this is file video which is based in san diego. it's on a mine hoff month -- nine-month mission. one pilot has been found.

the search goes on for the other fight. surveillance flights are under way over syria. the cia are revealing the number of isis militants is twice as high as thought. kyla campbell has more. >> reporter: as the u.s. prepares for expanded airstrikes against isis, the cia says anywhere from 20,000 to more than 31,000 militants are fighting for isis. that includes about 2,000 westerners and a dozen americans. the obama administration says right now, u.s. swins -- surveillance flights are over syria. president obama wants congress to approve $500 million to our moderate syrian rebels to fight isis on the ground. he's finding republican support. >> somebody's boots have to be on the ground. so i do believe that what the president has asked for, as the

it was visible over a huge area, even spotted by some in sacramento. vanderburg says they didn't have a launch that could have caused the light. however there is a strong solar storm expected to hit earth and experts think the light could be tied to the storm. and that could disrupt satellite data, including gps. scientists say it's been several years since a storm this size came near the earth. no major problems are expected. apple's brand-new iphone 6 and 6 plus went on sale for preorder at midnight. why some people had difficulties trying to reserve their new devices and which one is already sold out. at 1-800-dentist, we're about one thing.

u.s. retail sales are higher than economists had forecast in august, suggesting the federal reserve might start hiking interest rates sooner than expected. the wall street appears headed for its first weekly loss since the start of august. the dow is down 64. the nasdaq down 24. s&p down 11. preorders for the new iphones began at midnight but in just five hours, the larger version, the iphone 6 plus, already sold out. many people who tried to preorder said there were long

delays on the online apple store for several hours. had slightly more success on major sales order websites. delivery and in-store sales begin a week today. but the 6 plus is not expected to ship until mid-october. a federal court has unseemed 1500 pages of documents from yahoo's! fight against the fight over user data demanded by the nsa. the sunnyvale company refused to hand over data in 2008 saying it was a violation of fourth amendment rights against unreasonable search and seizure. yahoo! says the government threatened to slap it with a fine of $250,000 a day. yahoo! eventually gave up the information after an unsuccessful legal challenge. hewlett-packard has been fined for bribing russian officials. the company pleaded guilty to felony companies and said the bribery was done by a russian
