chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we like it give you a sense of the damage. that is a photo of the crash. on the left that is from google maps before the crash happened. new developments in the fall out from the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion. pg&e fired three executives because of improper e-mail communication with regulators. for years pg&e has been criticized for having a relationship with regulators. ktvu's tom vacar reports from san francisco on how those e- mails came to light. >> we want everybody to know and understand we will live by our code of conduct. >> reporter: pg&e fired its senior vice president. its vice >> we have taken action here today. we separated three officers

from the company. higher ranking officials. creating a new position to over see all affairs and we are asking him to come in and be a special advisory. >> reporter: they say the firings come from pg&e's taking a look at itself. >> we did a review going back 5 years. we looked at 65,000 e-mails. and we did find these e-mails that rise it the level of violations and we have taken action today. >> reporter: for its part the california public utilities commission made changes as well which we will discuss at 6:00 p.m. including firing one person and potentially several more. the other issue is, even though pg&e did review the 65,000 e- mails, the successful lawsuit by the city of san bruno to get

7,000 lawsuits that revealed this lawsuit. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. happening now, a strike announcement this afternoon from workers with a major bay area transit system. mechanics with the golden gate bridge district plan to strike tuesday. ktvu's david stevenson is covering the talks for us and joins us now for what this means. >> reporter: the coalition that speaks speaks for the unions says the one day strike will not impact service. it could be of what could come if the contracts aren't resolved. this stems from talks on a contract that expired in april. a new contract is what they are working on. district workers say a 3%

increase isn't off setted by healthcare contributions. the fear was workers could strike this week shutting bus or ferry service. instead 8 mechanics will picket tomorrow in front of district headquarters joined by 50 other union workers. >> our members are aware of the potential negative impact a strike could have on commuters. >> we are encouraging the union to come back to the bargaining table to get this settled. >> reporter: bract talks have been suspended. at 6:00 p.m. how some fear a strike could impact their life in the bay area. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. southwest flight diverted to oakland this afternoon because of a problem in the cockpit. it took off at 2:34 p.m.

the pilot declared an emergency. a flight control system was not functioning as ittiate. as it should. minnesota vikings star running back adrian peterson today made his first public comments about the child abuse charges he is facing. he said in part i am not a perfect son. i am not a perfect husband. i am not a perfect parent. but i am without a doubt not a child abuser. no one can understand the hurt i feel for my son and for the harm i caused him. my goal is always to teach my son right from wrong and that is what i tried to do that day. he was reinstated today after admitting he used a branch to strike his son. he said he was disciplining him the same way he was disciplined when he was a boy. today the vikings general manager defended the team's decision to reinstate adrian

violence and sexual assault. she was promoted to vice president of social responsibility. she will work with three other women on issues related to domestic violence. they have worked in the field for years. according to the league they will work to find initiatives aimed at raising awareness and decreasing domestic violence. the union representing players is planning to appeal the suspension by baltimore ravens running back ray rice. he was banned from playing after video of him was released showing him punching his fiance. the nfl players association has till midnight to file that appeal. here at home the chp is getting reports of damage and gather new witnesses after a major accident on 880. the crash was reported about

3:00 a.m. this morning. first responders rushed 9 people to the hospital. at 5:30 a.m. this morning the freeway was still shut down and the traffic backed up. it was a nightmare for commuters. crews were clearing the crash, the freeway was shut down till 9:30 a.m. this morning. ktvu's katy eustis is live now with an update on the victims and the investigation is growing? >> reporter: the three people that were transported in critical condition, chp says they are all still alive and at this point investigators are asking for witnesses who may have witnessed the initial crash to please come forward because they are trying to determine what caused this collision. >> lord, know, know, and i see him hit that center divide and launch. >> reporter: flames illuminated around 3:00 a.m. this morning after a big rig plowed through the center

divide. >> i hear the impact. i am like, oh, god, no, no, no. >> reporter: chp says a big rig driver swerved to miss a car stopped in the right hand lane on south bound 880. it struck the middle card rail. detectives are following leads as to what caused it to lose control initially. >> we have been receiving phone calls as a possible vehicle that fled fled the scene. >> they located a vehicle but are working to find the driver. the big rig stopped in the north bound lanes and the interstate was shut down. first responders transported 9 people with injuries. three of them in critical condition. life flight landed on the interstate. drivers dodged crunks of concrete -- chunks of concrete and debris. >> i can't believe this.

9 pounds of opium found inside soap at san francisco international airport. they are seized tuesday. agents provided these pictures. it contains 66 bars of soap but each bar had been carved out, and stuffed with opium. officials say the box was delivered by thailand. they won't tell us whether or not anyone has been arrested. we know more about the crash at the reno air races. a wing malfunctioned on the plane. according to the report portions of the right ring separated from the plane before

the crash. the pilot was 64-year-old lee behel of san jose. that is him on the right next to his plane. the report will be updated throughout the investigation which the ntsb says could take a year. in san francisco police are looking for two suspect whose shot a man. it happened before 8:00 a.m. this morning. police say the suspects walked up to the victim while he was waiting for a ride. they took off in a dark green victim. the victim is being treated for injuries at san francisco general hospital. firefighters are worried that winds could shift as they struggle for control of a fire that triggered hundreds of evacuations. the king fire is burning 60 miles east of sacramento. it grown to 4,000 acres in three days. at this point it is only 10% contained. more on what firefighters are

up against today. >> reporter: it was a full aerial assault today as cal fire plans dropped flame retardant while helicopters used water to battle the fast moving king fire. a blaze that forced crews to use a fire shelter today. the firefighters are all safe. but the afternoon winds spread the flames further and send white smoke miles into the air. >> 500 homes that were threatened. we want people to stay out of them for now. >> reporter: are the residents in the area have been forced to evacuate. you can see why the fire is still very hot, active and dangerous. the concern is that it will spread from this side of the road over here and go up the canyon to where more homes are located. so far no homes have been destroyed. in part because many did a good

job creating defensivable space. clearing brush and flammables away from their homes. >> defensible space. it provides for a much more defendable environment. >> reporter: ktvu channel 2 news. cal fire says a wildfire damaged or destroyed 75 structures. the fire is threatening 1,000 homes and prompted evacuations evacuations. the fire started after 1:35 p.m. this afternoon. it is now 200 acres. it shut down part of interstate 5 and cut power to 5,000 people. no word on what started the fire. hurricane odile made land fall in carla churchill -- cabo

san lucas. the storm was a category three when it hit. 15,000 tourists had to ride out the storm. remnants of hurricane odile are expected to cause down pours in southwestern part of the united states later on this week. i can't imagine how terrifying that must have been. i read one quote from someone, it is the scariest thing that ever happened to me in my life. let's go now to our chief meteorologist, hurricane odile is weakening? >> yeah. but slow. it is still a hurricane and it is moving over land now. let me show you what is happening now. you can see our clouds to the north. weather system that will impact us later in the week. you can see it working its way up. you can see it through here. see the center of it, here now. typically when they hit land fall like this, the terrain breaks down the wind speeds and

it falls apart but it hasn't happened yet. tuesday it will drop down to a tropical storm. but here is the movement. as of now it is a category one. the eye is over land. there is rain occurring in the area. what happens now, the moisture drains off, it will get into the jet flow and move into the desert southwest and create a ton of thunderstorms. it will move across the middle part of the country too, through the mississippi valley. we will track that for you. this is a story that continues to cause problems. there will be major rain and thunder and lightning as it moves along. 85 in antioch. cooler today. right? like that. it has been hot. we had a hot run. started to cool down. noticed on sunday. these are the highs -- or over night lows. mid-50s.

this low-pressure system sets us up tomorrow, a day cooler than today. it will be more fog at the coast. more breeze. tomorrow is like today. no big changes. as we head into wednesday and thursday, this weak weather system comes up next to the coast and brings us a chance for showers. wouldn't that be great? you know, foothills where they need it, they could get a half inch of rain. that is what could happen. also moisture from the hurricanes we have seen in the eastern pacific. south of san diego. we will watch it. this is a ways out. we could see sprinkles wednesday and thursday morning. the fog forecast for tomorrow morning, back to the coast. and it stops and it burns back. goes away tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow a lot like today. we saw clearing along the coast. highs tomorrow at the beaches

p.m. >> burglars follow a san jose woman to the store, slash her car's tires and then break into her house. her 20-year-old son was home at the time. he had to escape through a window. ktvu's azenith smith is live after speaking with the victim here. >> reporter: this is one of 11 reported burglaries in the district friday. it isn't clear if they are connected. the suspect stole jewelry and the lengths they went to steal it has the victim in disbelief. >> reporter: quiet and safe is what one san jose woman describes her home. that is until friday. >> i feel afraid. every time when somebody knock on the door i feel afraid. >> the victim asked not to be identified. around 10:30 a.m. friday morning she ran an errand. when she got out of the store

she saw her tires slashed. then a call from her husband. >> go home. somebody entered the home. >> reporter: her son was in the kitchen, he locked himself in the bedroom, jumped out the windo and called -- window and called 911. [ indiscernible ] >> he was looking for help. >> reporter: police found the suspect's car. two men are in custody. the victim recognized them as the ones parked next to her at the store. >> it is nerve-wracking where people are, you know, desperate enough to follow you home and follow your schedule. that is scary. >> reporter: the victim now plans to install doors made out of iron and an alarm system. she is grateful saying it could have been worse. her son says the suspects were warmed guns and a knife. >> i feel lucky because i heard the stories from different people they can lose so many

stuff. they life. >> reporter: we tried to get more information from san jose police about this case. we were told detectives are working the case and no additional information is available at this time. reporting live in san jose, azenith smith, ktvu channel 2 news. friends of a man who was shot to death by a police officer over the weekend are speaking out today. ktvu's rob roth spoke to the friends and the police about what prompted the use of deadly force. rob? >> reporter: the investigation into the shooting is now in the hands of the contra costa county district attorney. >> reporter: police returned to the scene this morning when a shooting happened. a few feet away sits a memorial in front of the liquor store where he was fatally shot by a police officer early sunday morning. the owner says he knew him since he was a little boy. >> i loved him.

i miss him now. like my son. >> reporter: in this surveillance video we can see him walking to the store and make a funny face. police say he appeared intoxicated and police say an officer encountered him outside. you can see the officer back up and raise his arms before firing. >> we have the officer's statement and witness statement that the the suspect was trying to take the officer's gun. we will be able to prove that. >> reporter: a store clerk who witnessed what happened told ktvu channel 2 news that he was trying to avoid being hut in handcuffs but did not try to grab the gun. police understand there is concern in the community. >> we need be transparent and accessible. listen and acknowledge if people are suspicious we will hear what they are saying. >> reporter: he worked for his father's business just a few blocks from the shooting.

new information tonight about the bank robbery that led to a deadly police chase in stock son. jaime ramos is facing more than 30 charges. two other suspects died in the gun battle along with misty holt-singh. police say she was likely used as a human shield. authorities believe they identified the person who drove the suspects to the bank. he is pablo ruvalcaba and they announced the arrest of a 16- year-old. federal agents are offering a

$5,000 reward for information about a weapon recovered at the scene with no serial number. congress is considering legislation to protect a consumer's right tapost negative online re-- to post negative online reviews. it would make it illegal for businesses to fine customers who make bad reviews. he says it is a violation of free speech. his legislation is similar to a california bill already signed line law. urban outfitters is apologizing for a sweat shirt many are calling outrageous. this is the kent state university sweat shirt that appears to be flattered with blood -- splattered with blood. it was offered for $129 on the urban outfitters website. the kent state university

while you are being asked to cut back we discovered water leaks in the bay area are taking weeks, months to fix after they are reported. a huge amount of water is at stake when we can least afford it. ktvu's eric rasmussen with how the job has got an lot bigger. >> they handled 400 calls reporting water waste last month. last year, 20. when it comes to leaks there

have been thousands of calls. crews can't always get to them as fast as customers would like. >> reporter: signs of the drought are all over the bay area. if brown is the new green it is no wonder sights like these have people fired up. at this east bay mud dispatch center they are fielding more calls than ever about water waste and water leaks. 2 investigates obtained a list of all 3,112 reports of leak through july this year. one of them -- >> you would see water in the middle of the street down the cracks. >> reporter: in front of his house in berkeley. >> it was a nightmare. we lost sleep over this. leak from a pipe under his street flooded his basement. cleaning up the water and the

mold cost him $20,000. east bay mud confirmed a series of leaks. one in march took 67 dize fix. more waters lost than he could ever try to conserve. >> from the amount of water that was coming in it would take weeks for us to use that much water in our home. >> they settled with him for $15,000 and says it is doing additional testing in the area now. so far this year they say it fixed its most priority 5 leaks in less than one day 97% of the time. p4 in a week or less 87% of the time. on a 4,000-mile system it is a never ending job. >> reporter: do you feel pressure to get the leaks fixed faster? >> there is an awareness of

that expectation. >> reporter: we asked san jose water for a record of all of its leaks this year when neighbors say leak there was allowed to flow for a month. >> i feel like i am doing my job. i think they should do their job. i mean, that is it. >> the private utility declined to provide a list but says its loss is less than 7%. the san francisco public utilities commission provided a list of 500 water leaks and breaks through july but no information about how long it took to respond. for many the challenge is maintaining an aging system of pipes that is only getting older but a long term fix won't be cheap. they replace about 10 miles of pipe a year at $2 million a mile. the goal is to replace 40 miles

in. come in, 60 -- or 70s. 80s. 90s want to stay east of the area. nice day tomorrow. a lot like today which was cooler than the last couple days. temperatures tomorrow 70s, low 80s and cooler than it was today because of this low- pressure system. as this low-pressure system translates out, another one punches in. that is on wednesday and thursday. we could see a chance for sprinkles which would be wonderful. it would be. wouldn't it be great to get a half inch of rain? be great on the yards. we will track that. that is the big story in the weather center right now. we could use rain. this is the biggest drought in -- as long as we kept records in california. goes back to 1849. a long time ago. the fires that we will be talking about at 7:00 p.m.

instants involving -- separate incidents involving sharks. a surfer came face to face with a shark. ktvu's janine de la vega tells us what happened. >> reporter: the skies were over cast monday morning. in the sand a new sign warning of a predator. on sunday a woman told rangers she saw a shark 50 yards from the shore. >> she reported seeing thrashing around in the water. and a seal being thrown up into the air. she saw blood. and the head of a shark. >> rangers learned of another shark. he was surfing there saturday and was taken by surprise. >> caught my second wave. barely got into it and i was popped in the air by 10, 15

the injuries they suffered. the bruises and the cuts were still visible on their faces and arms. the couple explained a man and woman in their 40s knocked on their doors on friday. they said they admired their flowers. the couple let them into their home, gave them cuttings and it wasn't till later that day they realized their money and wallet were gone. at the time they didn't know who took the money. the next day the robbers come back again. this time with a dolly. once the man and woman are inside the home they turn violent. they beat the woman, punching her in the face, and tried to stab her in the neck. they bound her and her husband with rob and duct tape but the woman was able to escape, she hopped a fence in the backyard to run to a neighbor and called for help. >> she is still in
