fire season erupts in california, this wildfire burning along the road to tahoe has exploded in size. doubling to more than 8,000 acres. >> good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. across northern california, fire crews are scrambling to save homes as our fire season is really starting to heat up. this newest fire is the boils fire it's burning near the community of weed north of redding. it started at 1:30 this afternoon and has already burned more than 100 homes. authorities say the wind driven

fire has been jumping from trees to structures. at least 1,500 people have been evacuated. so far the fire has burned 350 acres and is just 15% contained. right now at least 11 wildfires are burning across the state keeping fire crews busy and homeowners on edge. >> reporter: less than two hours ago, more than 100 residents attended a briefing at sierra middle school. sheriff's officials let residents where there are mandatory evacuations and where

road closures are. >> tonight calfire tells me the fire has doubled in size since this morning. it has now burned 8,600 acres and it's threatening 500 homes. the sky covered in a giant cloud of smoke. >> this is our property, the front porch. >> the home was billowing in ashes. i said that's it. let's gut out of here. >> reporter: samuels voluntarily evacuated his family including three dogs, a rabbit and a bird. the samuels were among several families watching the fire from a grocery store parking lot. >> there's a lot of anxiety just like anyone would have when you're afraid of losing

your home. >> reporter: the fire is becoming difficult to fight with the rough terrain and uncooperation of mother nature. there's only 5% containment. around noon about a dozen firefighters had to deploy their fire shelters. >> the wind direction they had a wall of fire. they were able to get into their escape zones. >> reporter: those firefighters escaped to safety. homeowners say they have an added concern. >> when you're sitting and waiting, worried about looters. calfire says homeowners are double protected. firefighters are battling the fire wild el dorado county deputies are protecting neighborhoods to keep out looters. i'm told the aerial attack will resume when it's daylight again. live in pollock pines, amber lee. those firefighters in pollock pines are getting help

from the bay area. this afternoon a contra costa county strike team met at the cordilia strike trucks. at least two other strike teams are joining them on the front lines from alameda county and marin county. their deployment could last a week or more. let's go to ktvu's chief meteorologist bill martin. >> take a look, the big fire up here happy camp complex that's been going on for a week. the king fire more recently started this weekend. that's just two. check out the fires in northern california. we have a bunch of them. now this is the driest period ever recorded in california history. and you ask what the weather pattern is that's fueling it, that's the weather pattern. the climate is dry. it's never been this dry. since we've been recording history 1849. over 150,000 acres on fire in northern california. temperatures today they're pretty warm and we had 99 up here up in the lake county

area. we had 86 up toward whisky town. still very hot. the conditions are going to stay this way for a while. there's lots of smoke showing up in the lake tahoe area up around truckee as well. i'm going to be talking about a chance for showers in the forecast. you don't think that would help out a ton, that's a possibility. when i come back i'll detail it for you. >> fire crews are battling yet another wildfire. the courtney fire started over the weekend and is burning hurst. so far it has destroyed more than 30 homes and several dozen other structures and vehicles. another 200 homes are evacuated. the fire has burned 320 acres and is now 35% contained. our coverage of these fires burning throughout the state are being covered on ktvu.com,

while buganvia plant. they invited them inside. >> so we gave them a clipping. they were very nice, friendly. >> reporter: the men and woman came back the next day asking for more clippings. once they were in the home again the man and woman suddenly became violent. >> he just jumped on me. he tried to put a tip in my arm, my mouth. >> reporter: the man turned on the woman. >> she wanted to kill me. >> reporter: with the elderly couple tied up the robbers wheeled their safe out of their home. even after she had beaten up, this 90-year-old woman was able to escape her home. hopped a fence behind her property and run to a neighbor's house to call for help. >> i don't know how i did it

but i climbed it. >> reporter: pa says she did get a good look at the robbers. the men and woman were tall and thin, spoke english with an unusual accent and the man had a fake limp. they drove off in a blue two door sedan. el cerrito police believe the robbers had been to the neighborhood before and may have tried to talk their way into other homes. >> i said sometimes it's not nice to be good to somebody. because people will abuse you. just be careful. >> el cerrito police say they have all of their detectives working on this case. they're asking anyone who may have had contact with the couple that resembles those attackers to give police a call. workers at transit are scheduling a protest. only eight machinists plan to

picket tomorrow. the unionists represent 450 workers they're not happy with contract negotiations. the district says it pays competitive wages and that this strike won't affect the 27,000 people who use the buses each day or the 5,500 people who ride the ferry. >> i probably wouldn't come to sausalito and tiburon as much. i would probably stay on the other side where i'm coming from. >> reporter: at this point there's no talking going on. bridge district officials tell us they have negotiated in good fate. made compromises and they would like to get back to the negotiations table. the three executives are senior vice president of

regulatory affairs thomas bottroff, trina horner and brian cherry. >> reporter: julie it is clear from these e-mails that execs here at pg & e were very worry ied about a judge being assigned to the san bruno case. and it's only because of e- mails this case has come to light. more questions about pg & e and the association that overseas it. >> there's a lot going on between the puc and pg & e that shouldn't be going on. >> reporter: now we're sees just what's being going on behind closed doors. >> very, very disturbing. >> reporter: officials sued to get e-mails and communications between the utility and commission. these new e-mails released today show pg & e was pushing for a certain judge to be assigned to an upcoming case about how much rates will increase to cover the costs of pipeline improvements stemming

from a disaster. in an e-mail to carol brown, top aid of peavy, vice president of regulatory relations cherry complains about an administrative judge assigned to rule on the case. saying quote, there's a huge line of distance between wrong and wong. brown says she will see if anything can be done. cherry replies, please, please, check. this is a major problem for us. >> pg & e needs to be held accountable for pulling the strings of the puc. >> reporter: mark tony applauds the firings but says for the corruption to really end president peaty must also go. >> when you have this kind of collusion you don't get safety, you don't get accountability and you get skyrocketing bills that nobody can afford. >> reporter: for its part pg & e says these type of communications will no longer

occur. >> it's not something we take lightly. we're accountable for what happened and we took action. >> reporter: carol brown she resigned from her postat the puc. and michael peavy agreed to step ape side from that rate setting case and from the vote on whether to uphold the $1.4 billion fine against pg & e for the deadly san bruno disaster. i'm heather holmes, ktvu channel 2 news. the u.s. military launched a new phase of air strikes against islamic state militants. the air strikes targeted isis or isil fighters south of baghdad after the request to the iraqi security forces. until now, the u.s. has only used air strikes to protect americans and american interests. in the meantime, secretary of state john kerry had representatives of 11 nations in paris. they're trying to fight the

the quick charging, zero emission, all-electric smart electric drive. just $139 a month. it's been about 24 hours since a category three hurricane named odile hit cabos san lucas and people are still in shelters. it is the safest place for them to be right now. people in baja california were hit hard. >> about 135 people needed hospital treatment but no deaths have been reported. cabo san lucas is littered with collapsed walls, downed trees and power lined plus smashed windows. many of the tourist hotels were damaged. mexican officials also reported looting until police were able to move in and take control. it's estimated that some 26,000 tourists were right in the area

when odile swept in. we spoke by phone to one of those tourists, harry fong from castro valley he said odile hit about 3:00 a.m. >> we were on the first floor of the hotel. heard loud gushing of water and we basically had 30 seconds to get out of the room it was insane. >> reporter: fung says he can see a lot of damage right now he and his 11 friends are safe but they're stuck on the third floor of their hotel above the water that's contaminated with raw sewage. he says there's no power, very little food and so far at least no help. >> trying to save every bottle of water we have. trying to ration whatever crackers that we took from the buffet. >> reporter: fung also says they're supposed to fly home tomorrow but they don't know if they can even get to the airport or if there will be a plane for them. >> reporter: right now that airport in cabo is closed but

it is expected to reopen tomorrow. no one got in or out today. flights were cancelled at san francisco and other airports around the country. officials in mexico say powerful winds damaged terminals and some people had to ride out the storm in the baggage area. any sick tourist and the elderly will be the first to leave. now to the bay airport that was damaged by that airport in napa. three weeks later controllers at the napa county airport are in a temporary facility using radios and binoculars to direct planes. new at 10:00, debora villalon live with an exclusive look at how air traffic controllers are trying to make due. >> reporter: by >> reporter: -- binoculars are big right now. >> it's a little cramped here. >> reporter: and their tower is on a trailer barely off the

ground. >> we've got some new trainees here and it's like, this is a great opportunity for them to see this is basic air traffic. >> reporter: so basic, controllers use their cell phones to get clearances to move planes into more distant air space. and they're talking to pilots on just two hand held radios. with reception not nearly as crisp as when they were speaking 60 feet up. the steel frame tower stood strong but the cab at the top shook like a ball on the end of a stick. blasting out the plate windows. >> the wind was just, blowing through this tower cam. papers were flying and glass particles were flying around. >> reporter: the fire chief was grateful it was 3:00 a.m. not p.m. this wasn't his first quake. >> i was up in the livermore travel during loma prieta. back then it knocked me down and i just got back up and

started working again. >> reporter: the controller opened just three days later. using the trailer on the other side of the field ever since. everything that makes this a working control tower is undamaged except the window. 10 pains, 3/4 of an inch thick will take time to replace. >> they were this long, this wide. >> reporter: the glass is special order and might not be ready for a month. but before then they'll move to better temporary digs. how long will you be in this one? >> until this one is complete. >> reporter: a trailer that fits four comptrollers instead of four. >> we'll be able to sit in this tower. we'll have better capability. >> reporter: all of this has been a live drill for the technical staff. >> we learned a lot of lessons out of it. that will help us in a larger emergency. >> reporter: the airport gets as many as 200 aircraft a day. pilots are adjusting, along with the comptrollers who know

they will be telling this quake story the rest of their careers. >> i told mike from the very beginning it's going to be like camping. they're making the best out of a bad situation and they're doing a fine job with it. >> reporter: debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. temperatures today slightly cooler than they were yesterday. and slightly cooler again tomorrow most likely. these are the highs, 80. still hot in antioch. temperatures trending down the next 24 hours or so. a very active pacific right now. you can see all the activity subtropical moisture streaming north. this area as we get into wednesday and thursday has opportunity to bring us a chance of showers. i'm going to talk about that coming up. right now along the coast we have fog free conditions. a little fog will show up tomorrow morning. right now it is fog free. kind of breezy out there. we have windy conditions around the bay. temperatures are on the mild side. 63 in napa. we'll check out the winds. the wind is still blowing up in the delta as well.

we have 36-mile an hour gusts sustained at 28. so it's howling up there. temperatures tomorrow morning upper 50s, kind of like what we had this morning. as a matter of fact tomorrow a lot like today. and then things change around as a system comes in here. we get a chance of showers that would be great wouldn't it. we'll get to that. fog tomorrow morning. this is what shows up not a lot. it burns back quickly. forecast highs tomorrow the reds, those are your 90s. that foot fingerprint our temperature footprint just like today except slightly cooler. when i come back at 10:45, we're going to take a look at the long ways computer models. it's pretty aggressive which will be a great thing for the bay area. so we'll have that in just a few. an nfl star is accused of child abuse. the new claims about adrian peterson as the vickings clear him to play in the next game. up first a car plows into a

a car today slammed right into a historic san francisco bar. the driver was already a wanted man. >> it's a miracle no one was killed. >> reporter: this is the accident that johnny wrangling is referring to. at 9:00 a.m., this bmw came barreling into the car. his employee who was in the middle of his first shift as a bartender told him what happened. >> he heard screeching and saw the car coming directly to the door way and it drove through. >> we had a very busy lunchroom earlier. they had just pretty much let out. >> reporter: this man was behind the wheel.

he was driving southbound on columbus when for some unknown reason he lost control of his vehicle. startling several people and sending two customers to the hospital. >> my first reaction was jesus. someone has to be, must have gotten seriously hurt. >> one has some minor injuries, the other not so minor injuries but both have been taking to the hospital evaluation. >> reporter: english is not the drivers first language but when they did a check, he had a warrant. >> he's now being placed under arrest for that warrant. >> reporter: the bar has been here since 1907: and maybe a few days before they're able to reopen. as for the portion where the car went through, there's a lot of damage done on that side and they're still unclear exactly when that part will reopen. in san francisco, i'm paul chambers. los angeles police say they will investigate the

circumstances that led an officer to handcuff an actress. django star said she and her husband were in their car and kissing. someone called police to talk about indecent exposure. and when police arrived, watts gave his i.d. but she declined. police said they had a right to question them because of of prostitution. they say they're now considering legal action. wall street started the week with a mixed closures. the dow gained 34 points but the nasdaq dropped 48. apple announce today that sales of the new iphone 6 set a

record with 4 million orders placed in just 24 hours. preorders kicked off the last friday. apple says most phones will be ready for delivery this friday but some people have to wait until mid-october because of the high demand. and some i tunes users are saying thanks but no thanks to a freebie from apple. the give away annoyed some people who went on twitter to complain. in response apple released a special tool that allows users to delete the album if they don't want it. 2 investigates a dramatic increase on water leaks and water waste and why some problems take longer to fix than others. two bay area football players under arrest. the criminal charges they're facing tonight after an incident in the locker room.

new video tonight from oakland where right now police are investigating a homicide. officers tell us they found a man dead on 76 avenue on international boulevard. police received the call a little after 8:00 tonight. they say the victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds. at this point investigators are not identifying him. since it is so early in the investigation they don't have any information on possible suspects. two bay area football players are facing criminal charges tonight after police say they hazed a younger teen member. maureen naylor is live at livermore at the school in the center of this incident, maureen. >> reporter: police tell us that the incident the hazing incident happened inside a locker room at this livermore charter high school. now tonight, two football players 17 years old each face misdemeanor charges after investigators say they held

down a freshman teammate and shaved a portion of his head. and officers tell us there's video of the incident. >> police say the hazing incident happened on the campus of livermore valley charter preparatory high school. around 7:00 last wednesday night. tonight we were there at the same time as the high school football team left practice with gear in hand. several players tell us they could not talk and multiple parents aware of the incident did not want to comment. the two teens were arrested friday night which was also the team's first home game. tonight we met these soccer players that go to a close by school and heard about the incident. >> i don't think it's fair. because it was two kids that were smaller than him. so i don't think it was fair for the kids. >> reporter: they say his coach has told them he has a zero

tolerance. >> if a player does any hazing or bullying, they're out of the team. >> reporter: they face charges of hazing, false impressment and battery. there's a third teen on the video that could be arrested although that has not happened yet. we reached out to the coach but have not heard back from him. he's already charged with child abuse now minnesota vickings peterson is facing allegations that he abused another one of his sons. peterson says that they received photos of another child covered in bandages and questions by his mother that she questioned a whooping in the car. the statement said in part, i

am not a perfect son, i am not a perfect husband, i am not a perfect parent, but i am without a doubt not a child abuser. the vickings reinstated peterson today. he is expected to play on sunday. peterson is due in court to face his child abuse charges next month. the nfl is making a move, a new move now in an effort to come up with new policies on domestic violence by its players. roger goodell announced the league has hired four women to shape those policies. anna isaacson will work with two other women on domestic abuse. ktvu's noelle walker says the team knows there's traffic

problems but fixing them is going to be a work in progress. >> reporter: when the game ended 70,000 people flooded the streets. >> it was mayhem. >> reporter: some took to  twitter calling the traffic ridiculous. am tweeted, never again will i go to levi's stadium until they solve this traffic disaster. another tweet, i am just trying to get out of my neighborhood. photos showed brake lights. doug wakefield counted his blessings. >> we could look out and see nothing but red lights not moving hardly at all. traffic and that was for a couple of hours. >> reporter: the 49ers acknowledged there are two problem lots but say despite traffic problem predictions before the stadium was built there was no way to test traffic flow. >> they didn't think about the traffic when they built this

david campo extended an invitation to facebook to discuss the facebook real name policy. the san francisco's drag community and others say the policy is discriminatory and potentially dangerous. a meeting is set for wednesday. 2 investigates water leaks draining our supply. >> from the amount of water that was coming to our basement it would take weeks for us to use that water. we deaf any factually need some rain. we could get some this week. i'm tracking when wet weather could arrive and how much is expected. this is the board he was riding when a shark went on the attack. >> it popped into the air like 10 to 15 feet. >> the steps being taken to keep people safe at a popular beach.

shark warnings are up in santa cruz county after one very close encounter. life guards are telling people at sea bright beach to stay out of the water. on saturday, bo browning was surfing when he said a 15-foot great white shark took a bite out of his board and sent him flying. >> out of nowhere i was popped into the air by probably like 10, 15 feet. and i looked down and saw a shark. roll over on my board. and i think took a bite on the way down. >> then yesterday a woman at sea bright beach told park rangers she saw a great white shark about 50 yards from the shore attacking a harbor seal. warning signs were put up telling people to stay out of the water for three days.

everyone though, surfers and kayakers have been ignoring those signs. part of the right wing broke off when the plane crashed. the investigation is expected to take about a year. pilot lee veel was the only one in the plane when it crashed. seen here talking about how excited he was to be flying in the race. authorities think pablo rubalcava may have drove two bank robbers. two other suspects died in a gun battle along with hostage

misty holt singh. authorities say she was used as a human shield. a california state senator resigned after lying about where he lives so he could run for office. rod wright was sentenced to three months to jail for perjury. he claimed to live in inglewood but a jury determined he actually lived outside his senate district. today he offered his resignation effective next monday. president obama is expected to announce he is sending 3,000 personnel to africa to fight the outbreak of ebola. the president is expected to fly to the cdc to thank the volunteers. the giants are trying to keep their play off hopes

tonight, two investigates finds out some leaking pipes in the bay area are going unfixed for weeks even months. this while we're being told to conserve water. the drought has more people on the look out for water waste and water leaks but ktvu's erik rasmussen found out crews don't always respond as quickly as customers would like -- eric rasmussen. >> reporter: signs of the drought are all over the bay area. if brown really is the new green, it's no wonder sights

like these have people fired up. >> good afternoon east bay water emergency. >> reporter: at this east bay m.u.d. resource center. >> the consumer is reporting it's running on to the sidewalk. >> reporter: they're fielding more calls than ever about water waste and water leaks. two investigates obtained a detailed list of all reports of leaks to east bay mud through july this year. one of them -- >> on a day like this you would see water right in the middle of the street down these cracks. >> reporter: right in front of ron andrews house in berkeley. >> it was a nightmare. we lost sleep over this thing. >> reporter: andrew says a leak from an east bay pipe flooded his basement. cleaning up the water and the mold cost him more than $20,000. east bay mud confirmed a series of leaks that the location. one many march took 67 days to fix. more water lost than andrew's could ever try to conserve in this drought. >> from the amount of water that was coming in our basement.

it would take, it would take weeks for us to use that much water. in our home. >> reporter: east bay mud settled with andrews for $15,000. and says its doing additional testing in the area now. so far this year the utility says it's fixed its most critical priority five leaks in less than one day 97% of the time. p4s in a week or less 87% of the time. >> we're going to shut this off. >> reporter: on a 4,000-mile system, supervisors say it's a never ending job. evaluating which leaks to fix first. >> do you feel more pressure to get those leaks fixed faster now that everybody is looking so closely. >> there certainly is an awareness on our part of that expectation. >> reporter: two investigates asked san jose water for a record of all these leaks this year when neighbors in willow glen say a leak there was allowed to flow for nearly a month. >> i feel i'm doing my job as a citizen. i feel they should do their

job. that's it. >> reporter: the private utility declined to provide a list of its leaks but says it's water loss is less than 7%. bet better than the national average. the utilities commission detailed a leak but no information on how long it took to respond. >> that's where the leak was happening? >> yeah. >> reporter: the challenge is maintaining an aging system of pipes that's only getting older but a long term fix won't be cheap. >> reporter: east bay mud repairs a mile of pipe at $1,000. >> e-mail two investigates at ktvu.com. a lava flow is creeping closer ever closer to a rural subdivision on the big island

of hawaii. the lava is now only .1 of a mile from the edge of the subdivision. no homes are in imminent danger. since june the lava flow has crept 10 miles and could cut off a main highway by early next month. and we've got some weather to talk about here. we've got weather systems offshore that are going to have an impact on us as we go into the next couple of days. we'll get to that. we'll get to odile which has now been downgraded a few hours ago. now it's a tropical storm that has winds of 65 miles per hour. let's check the track on it. here's the story with odile. as it moves north through the northern part of baja it's going to shift and get pushed. they're going to get hammered with rain and thunder and lightning. this whole moisture plume is going to travel to the northern part of the country. it's a story that will continue

to grow as we go through the next few days. actually probably this will be the story for the next several weeks as you go east. the temperatures today 67 in concord, 67 in antioch area. it's pretty warm. or mild out there right now. tomorrow is going to be slightly cooler than today because of this low pressure center. and just, i mean it's the same day basically but slightly cooler. as we go into wednesday night into thursday. this system gets close. grabs a little bit of subtropical moisture and brings us a chance for showers. wednesday night into thursday morning. it would be great. so this is a long range model. it has a broad brush it's not really that detailed but will give us a closer idea. you start seeing sprinkles showing up around santa rosa. you see the moisture plume. it's not well organized. the dynamic of the flow is not organized like you would see in the wintertime. but there's a lot of moisture and you're going to get some rain out of this somehow. into 7:00 a.m. you're going to see scattered showers into the bay area.
