off at 10:30. firefighters from salinas, colma, kentfield and san rafael are taking part. as of last night, the king fire has charred more than 18,000 acres. it's 5% contained. a record drought hot temperature, wind, steep terrain, some of the challenges firefighters are up against. >> it's something on one hand is very exciting but at the end of these opportunities, you don't realize how exhausted you can be. but during it, i think you are running on a lot of adrenaline to keep going. >> hundreds of homes in and around pollock pines are under evacuation. the king fire is threatening 1600 homes and 800 additional structures. smoke made air quality so poor that some schools near reno had to cancel sporting events.

ash was raining in truckee. contra costa county has sent up an engine to relieve crews. another destructive fire continues to rage in siskiyou county where flames have wiped out areas. it's north of redding. flames have destroyed or damaged 150 buildings, including 100 homes. two churches, a school and a sawmill were also burned. at times, the fire moved so fast that residents say they only had a few minutes to get out of the way. >> had to run up the back hill. get our stuff. we were fortunate. our house didn't burn. 25 houses in the area. probably five survived. >> evacuation orders are still in order. the fire has burned 375 acres. we just checked with calfire. it says the fire is 25% contained. the cause of the fire is not yet known.

details about the 2012 mass sheeting at a university. according to witness accounts, suspected shooter juan goh stormed into a room where nursing students were taking a test. he clutched the school receptionist in one hand and a .45 caliber pistol in the another. witnesses say he shot and killed the receptionist and continued to gun down people in the room. seven people were killed. goh is currently at napa state hospital and it's unclear if he will ever stand trial. police flooded an oakland neighborhood this morning searching for burglary suspects. police say they received a citizens tip this morning that burglars were climbing into a home through a bathroom window in the area of kern avenue and sutter street. when officers arrived, the burglars took off. police closed the coolidge offramp on 580 to search the area. but so far no arrests have been

made. chp is working to identify two people killed in a fiery crash in pleasanton late last night. ktvu's alex savidge has more on what may have caused the accident and one family's close call. >> reporter: witnesses saw this sports car speeding along 580 last night. moments before it flew off the freeway, hit a tree and bust into flames. the crash touched off a small brush fire that was quickly contained. and inside this charred wreckage, officers found two bodies. >> i heard a breaking -- like someone was putting on their brakes. >> reporter: regina newton who lives in a church off the freeway heard the crash at around 11:00 last night and when she saw the fire, she quickly realized there was no way anyone survived. >> i was worried about, you know, the people inside and then, you know, their families because it's just -- it is a sad way to end your life like that. >> reporter: identifying the

victims in this case will be difficult because they were so badly burned. chp investigators right now are going over evidence that was found here at the crash site hoping it will help them figure out who was inside that car. and just before it veered off the road, this car clipped the front of an suv on the freeway. the chp says there was a family inside with four kids but they weren't hurt. >> the difference between being involved in a collision and then tragically involved is a matter of inches or seconds. they are very lucky. >> reporter: investigators don't think this car was involved in a race last night. they are trying now to nail down exactly how fast it was going and what caused the driver to lose control triggering this fiery wreck. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. a new controversy is renewing calls for the head of california's public utilities commission to be fired. michael peavy has held the job for the past 12 years.

but critics say he's become far too powerful. they also say he's become too cozy with pg&e executives in the wake of the san bruno pipeline disaster. those critics include jerry hill of san mateo who is worried about peavy's control over the agency that regulates pg&e. >> that control is what has created the culture at the puc. so until he leaves, until he's gone as president, we won't see the change. >> private e-mails that became public earlier this week, show pg&e went judge shopping in a critical rate-setting case directly tied to the san bruno pipeline disaster. three top pg&e executives were fired and a top aide to peavy resigned. happening today, the house of representatives is set it vote on a resolution to allow the u.s. to give assistance to moderate syrian rebels to fight isis. if approved by the house and

the senate, the rebel would receive $500 million in equipment and training from the pentagon. the plan does not involve troops on the ground and today, president obama speaking directly to u.s. troops repeated his assistance they will not have a combat mission in iraq. that's despite the joint chiefs of staff saying yesterday he may ask the president to send ground forces if they are needed. >> as your commander-in-chief, i will not commit you and the rest of our armed forces to fighting another ground war in iraq. >> today, isis released a new video challenging president obama to send in troops to fight in iraq. dozens of people evacuated after three cars went up in flames early this morning in the south bay. why there was concern about damage to a nearby creek. certainly been in need of rain. we might be getting some. mark tamayo is tracking a

investigators are trying to figure out why three vehicles caught on fire this morning outside a campbell apartment complex. it was a frightening ordeal for people who live there. ktvu's janine de la vega tells us why there was concern for the nearby creek and what they know so far about this fire. >> reporter: fire investigators rummaged through charred remains of this van in hopes of figuring out why it went up in flames. a neighbor took this picture showing what it looked like outside of the cedar apartments on union avenue at 4:00 a.m. this morning. >> i heard a loud explosion like a big bang. i opened the curtains and saw the flames. flames about 15 feet were coming out of the van. >> reporter: the flames spread to the honda and suv. the fire station is located several door downs. so firefighters responded quickly and were able to put out the fire in 15 minutes. >> one or two of the vehicles' gas tanks were affected by the fire. we had a fuel leak. don't know how much but the crews fairly quickly recognized the fact that there was fuel in the water from the firefight.

>> reporter: firefighters shored up the drains and blocked the fuel from going into the los gatos creek. as a precaution, 40 residents were evacuated. they were let back inside after an hour. >> there's nothing right now that shows that broke in and started the fire. it doesn't look like it started on the outside at all. it's all from the inside going out. >> reporter: these tanks with chemicals inside that include propane were pulled out of this van. fortunately, none of them exploded. fire officials say if they had, the fire could have been much larger and caused more damage. i'm glad everybody is safe and nobody got hurt. >> reporter: while people are questioning what started the fire at this point, investigators say the cause is undetermined. in campbell, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. a target store in petaluma was evacuated because of a pungent odor that filled the store. three fire trucks and three ambulances responded to a call about a sulfur spiel at 9:30 --

smell at 9:50 this morning. there was concern about toxic fumes. so fire crews installed four gas monitors. they determined the odor was caused by a sewage problem in the janitorial part of the store and was not toxic. employees were checked to make sure they were okay. >> we evaluated approximately 30 employees from the target store. four of the employees had moderate respiratory and headache symptoms. they were treated and released at the scene and then the rest were evaluated but not needing medical attention. >> it's not clear how many customers were in the store at the time. target planned to call a plumber and the store was back open by about 11:00 this morning. the city of san francisco is hoping to shame property owners who have not had -- made their buildings seismically safe. city officials plan to post signs on hundreds of apartment buildings and hotels that violate seismic safety laws. many of those earthquake standards were put in place

following the 1989 loma prieta quake, which heavily damaged the marina estimate. the city estimates 4,000 buildings are still in need of being retrofitted under the law. overnight a magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit off the coast of guam. it was centered in the pacific oaks about 25 miles northwest of guam and was more than 100 miles deep. scientists say the quake did not cause any major damage and was too deep to trigger a tsunami. so far, there have been no reports of any serious injuries. amtrak today kicked off rail safety week with an event in emeryville. people riding the train signed a banner pledging to be track smart. caltrans says california has more avoidable rail-related fatalities and injuries than any other state in the country with more than 600 each year. the mother of 14-year-old jenna betty killed by a train in march was at today's event. >> the sound of a train is very

quiet. it sounds like a big rig. and they come upon you really, really quickly. >> caltrans spokesman also says trains are often difficult to see and they need a mile to come to a stop. well, a lot of sunshine here in the bay area. here is our live camera looking out towards san francisco. a little bit of haze out there. but a beautiful wednesday afternoon across the region. but look what's happening up to the north as you can see a frontal system. this looks like maybe an october or another satellite image. but look at this. rain showers approaching cape mendocino. this will be a factor in the forecast as we head into late tonight and early tomorrow morning. right now, you can pick out the shower coverage approaching eureka, also just approaching cape mendocino. right here, though, we are in the clear with a few high clouds approaching parts of southern mendocino county approaching parts of sonoma county throughout the afternoon hours as well. current numbers, it's mild out

there. take a look at the readings. san jose mid-70s. look at downtown san francisco checking in at 71 and already the lower 80s out towards walnut creek, concord in the upper 70s at 79. for -- for tonight, more sunshine on the warm side. the temperatures will be in the upper 80s. here is our live camera looking out toward the golden gate bridge. a beautiful wednesday afternoon. tomorrow completely different story. more clouds and we could be tracking showers, especially for the thursday morning commute. and then it looks like a warmer forecast as we head into your bay area weekend. as you can see, high pressure still has been in command of our weather. we've been trending down those temperatures as you can see, this weather system we've been watching this developing basically since last weekend. this area of low pressure, this cold front, later wednesday into thursday. light rain showers up to the north. some cooler temperatures. bay area wide but even the shower chance could extend down towards parts of the south bay as well. here is our forecast model. we'll put this into motion.

in insurance coverage. it must report any accidents related to a self-driving car. during testing, there must be a driver always in the driver's seat to take control of the car just in case. >> audi has always been, you know, pushing forward on the latest technologies. i'm not shocked about it. >> california joins michigan, florida and nevada as the states that allow the road tests. one study suggests that by 2025, as many as 230,000 new self-driving vehicles a year could hit the roads. that number could grow to 12 million by 2025. mountain view and pleasanton have made a list of the most liveable cities in the u.s. newton, massachusetts topped the list followed bide bellview, washington. mountain view came in third, cited for low crime rate, strong schools. pleasanton ranked fourth for property value, schools and low
