fire crews trying to save homes across northern california are hoping for help from the sky tonight, with a chance of rain in the coming hours. good evening, i'm julie hainer. >> i'm frank somerville. fire crews are making progress, but they could sure use some help from mother nature. happening now, the first rain of the season. tonight, we're starting to see green on our stormtracker 2 radar, and we have a live picture from the golden gate bridge, where cooler, moist air is moving onshore from the pacific. we have team coverage tonight. kate's amber lee, is back at the king fire. that fire has now grown to

almost 28,000 acres. first though, we go to our chief meteorologist, bill martin, and where it's raining right now. >> in fact, we're already getting reports of rain in the northern counties. we've had rain showers in guerneville. this is going to help firefighters out greatly in northern california as this moist system moves onshore. you see the showers are still well to the north of us, up near eureka. the showers are now moving into the fire zones, up by happy camp, up towards weed. a big time help for firefighters, as we move into a different weather pattern. 90degrees in the fire zone. the last couple of days 15% humidity. watch what happens tomorrow, it brings rain showers to northern california, maybe a quarter inch of rain in some places. humidity is going to quadruple, and go up 40 or 20% in some places. it also means showers here. i'll have the specifics on that

after the break. now to the raging king fire in el dorado fire. fire officials tell us it has doubled in size in the past 24 hours. there is still no end in sight. this is the fire closest to the bay area. it's burning along highway 50 at pollock pines. amber lee has been there each night this week. she joins us now live, and tells us, hundreds of people don't know if they're homes are going to make it. >> reporter: julie, we're just off of highway 50 here at pollock pines. take a look behind me. if you look closely, you'll be able to see the orange glow just behind those trees. fire crews tell me, they're burning a line around it to keep it from spreading. the people forced to evacuate are still waiting, and worrying about their homes. as night fell, this family was outside. keeping an eye on the smoke plumes that's emanating from the king fire. >> you can go right around this

corner, you can see the smoke. the smoke plumes, and you can kind of gauge how it's moving. >> reporter: one indication is towards her home. she and her family are now staying in a motel after evacuating yesterday. >> in the morning, it brings the smoke back into this direction. so it's like waking up to a mist. >> yes. >> like being in a stephen king movie. >> reporter: own this is real. fire officials say more than 120,000 homes are threatened. >> sad. fearful, a little bit. but there's some point where you just realize you can't control it. >> reporter: control of this fire continues to elude fire crews. they describe the king fire's behavior as extreme, and active. it has now grown to almost 38,000 acres, more than doubling its size just since yesterday, but containment is

only 5%. >> right now, we're trying to think of the containment line on the south side of the fire, and we'll just keep moving steadily until we can get a box around it, and stop that fire. >> reporter: it was easy to spot the large plume of smoke that looked like a cloud in the distance. up close, the fire spread in several directions, sparking more anxiety. >> there were communities that got evacuated today. it did have enough of an impact on communities. >> reporter: this family hopes the weather shifts in their favor. >> just on the verge of tears. and then you get past that. >> reporter: fire officials do not have an estimate for when crews will get the upper hand. they tale meal they'll just have to wait and see if the weather turns in their favor tomorrow. reporting live at pollock pines in el dorado county, amber lee,

ktvu news. in far northern california, crews now have 60% containment on a wildfire that has devastated the small lumber town of weed. losses there are staggering. 150 buildings damaged, or destroyed, including 110 homes. the community north of i-5 north of shasta lake is pulling together to support one another. >> reporter: there is nothing left at the alvarado home. the swing set melted with only the chimney left standing. >> a lifetime. we lived there three years and two weeks. >> reporter: there was barely enough time to grab a few of

their most precious belongings. >> mostly photo albums. my wedding ring. >> reporter: phillip lost his motorcycles and comic books going back to 1961. >> about 300 of them. >> reporter: even though the alvarados lost everything in their home, for some reason, phillip felt compelled to check the mailbox. >> opened it up, and it said, so sorry about your house. we couldn't save it. >> reporter: here it is, sorry about your home. it was already on fire when we showed up. we moved your trucks to the other side of the road. thanks for leaving the keys. it was signed cal fire siskiyou. >> i cried. >>

shortly before the accident. it's happened again, another nfl player being accused by domestic violence. police in phoenix arrested

arizona cardinals running back, jonathan dwyer after practice. this is his mug shot from the maracopa county jail. police say the case involves a 27-year-old woman, and an 18- month-old child. dwyer is facing five counts stemming from two incidents at his home in late july. one of the charges is aggravated assault, causing a fracture. the cardinals have deactivated him for sunday's game with the 49ers. the owners of the minnesota vikings say they made a mistake, and are now barring running back, adrian peterson from all activities. peterson was charged with child abuse after hitting his 4-year- old son with a switch. >> we value the community, and especially our fans. in the end, it really is about getting it right. >> the vikings benched peterson last weekend, then they reactivated him for the game coming up on sunday.

that prompted a backlash, and criticism from fans, sponsors, and politicians. peterson remains on the payroll, but cannot return to the team until his case is resolved. if it does go to trial, it means he may not return until next year. two bay area congresswomen are calling on the nfl to crackdown on players accused of domestic violence. ray mcdonald has been arrested for felony domestic abuse, but not been charged. niners have allowed him to play, citing due process. >> anything for football. i'm an avid 49er fan, but this is disgusting. i expect more from my 49ers. >> our coach says that, you know, innocent until proven guilty, due process, all of that. but the fact is, he shouldn't have played. >> the two bay area democrats said players should be

suspended until evidence can prove innocence, or guilty. the raiders owner, mark davis is now speaking out. he told the mercury news he feels the same way. a couple from daly city says they were ripped off by a thief who posed as a water department worker, and some of the things that were stolen can never be replaced. kate's rob roth tells us how it happened, and also how this case might be linked to scams in other bay area cities. >> here's where he came and he turned on this water. like that. >> reporter: 85-year-old olga besin says they never imagined a man who worked for the city water department would steal some of her beloved items. >> it just makes me angry.

it should have never happened. >> reporter: her 92-year-old husband rosario, a world war ii veteran, injured at iwo jima. his father's gold pocket watch is missing. >> i was thinking about giving it to one of the grandkids eventually. >> reporter: she says last friday, a man carrying two phones came to her backdoor. >> and he had a piece of paper, and he was telling me about rust in the water. he says that's what i'm here to check. so i said, well we don't have rust. he says but we have to check it. >> reporter: while she and the man were in the bathroom. >> he was here like this. >> reporter: she says another person she never saw must have been in her bedroom, stealing her safe and rings. >> i had all of her jewelry.

i'm mad. i even cry. >> reporter: similar scams have also happened recently in san francisco, sunset district, and in burlingame. >> we have investigators assigned to this case. part of their follow up is they're going to contact other bay area police agencies. >> reporter: police say they're looking for a hispanic man, 35, to 40 years old, with a medium build, and short hair. >> so i believed him. which i shouldn't have. >> reporter: police are urging people to call them first, before allowing anyone they don't know into their home. in daly city, rob roth, ktvu news. how a special needs student was picked up early, and dropped off alone. >> rain showing up. the system moving south, and when parts of the bay area could start seeing showers. >> next, a bay area mom dying of breast cancer, but she had one last dance that she wouldn't miss for the world.

moment. >> reporter: frank and julie, it is a story of hope, and strength, and the power of love. a bay area woman determined to live long enough for one last dance with her son on his wedding day. ♪ [ music ] >> a beautiful fairy tale wedding. a magical moment for san francisco newlyweds, ryan and caitlin manning. made even more extraordinary by what happened after they said i do. >> it was very special. >> reporter: ryan's mother, 61- year-old mary ann manning, was not going to led the deadly disease stop her from fulfilling a dream. >> she said this was her goal. she wanted to get to this wedding, and she didn't care how she did it. >> reporter: and she wanted to dance. determined to beat the wreckage of cancer on her body, mary ann placed her hands on her son's shoulders, and the two

delicately swayed to somewhere over the rainbow. >> i think that everybody kind of realized what they were seeing. they were seeing an incredibly strong woman doing a magnificent thing. a miracle. >> reporter: a miracle, her family says, because months before the wedding it appeared mary ann was losing her battle, confined to a wheelchair. >> it was incredibly emotional, especially to see her pop out of the wheelchair. for the days leading to, we were helping her do everything. even walk. to see her jump up, it was just amazing. >> reporter: an inspirational display of determination, and tearful show of a mother's love. >> absolutely, no doubt that that woman, you know, a very strong woman, fought incredibly hard to get to that point. >> reporter: it is a moment these three siblings will treasure forever. three days later, on september 8, their mother would pass away, leaving a family

heartbroken, but with a heart warming memory. ♪ [ music ] >> mary ann's children tell me that they have no doubt that their mom was living for that wedding. exactly 72 hours after the ceremony began at 5:30 p.m. is when mary ann took her last breath. a memorial service will be held on saturday in pleasantton. frank and julie, isn't that one of the most touching and sweetest things that you've ever seen? >> it's like she literally used all of they are strength just to make it to that wedding. >> it's beautiful. that video they'll treasure forever. such a hard story to tell, but thank you, heather. on our facebook page, we have posted more video, and photos of that last dance. you can join in the conversation, and share in your message of sympathy on ktvu channel 2 on facebook. the legal battle over american flag t-shirts at a high school in morgan hill appears to be over now. a federal appeal's court in san francisco declined to hear the

case. you may recall four years ago, live oak school asked students who wore american flag t-shirts on cinco de mayo to turn them inside out, and that caused an uproar. in february, the three judge panel found the school was justified in doing that, because of racial tension on campus. two fast food workers in antioch shutting down because of bad student behavior. customers can still use the drive through at the taco bell on lone tree way, but no one is allowed inside between 3:00 and 4:30 p.m. the same goes for the mcdonald's in the shopping center. restaurant managers decided to temporarily shut down their diners after school, citing student fights, vandalism, and loitering. police need your help finding a man who shot and wounded a man at a crosswalk. >> reporter: take a close look

at this police sketch. this is the man wanted by san francisco police for shooting sunday august 31. investigators say around 2:15 p.m., the suspect was driving near the section of golden gate avenue and broadway street, when he encountered the victim on foot. >> saw her yelling, and the guy was crossing the street. this way. the car was coming this way. >> reporter: this man, who asked us to call him ronald, says he saw the entire incident from his apartment window. >> the car almost hit him, so he went what's up? >> the victim and the suspect got into a verbal altercation. the suspect then drove away a short distance and began shooting. >> reporter: police say those shots were fired from 30, to 50 feet away. then the suspect got closer and fired even more shots. the victim was struck at least two times. >> i was looking out the window, and i saw the guy laying on the ground. >> reporter: the suspect drove off in a car similar to this.

it's described as a silver, or gray newer honda civic or accord. he was last seen wearing a baseball cap on backwards, possibly red in color, with a flat brim. they say this a random shooting, because the two men did not know each other. if you know anything about this case, you're asked to call san francisco police. paul chambers, ktvu news. the family of missing 87- year-old man from bellmont is asking for help finding him. he was spotted at a camp ground near the town of mcleod. his family is now offering a $5,000 reward. it's a 1956 gray mercedes convertible. the family says police stopped looking for him after they ran out of leads. now that the fire in that town of weed has started, that's

also strapping their resources. showers in the morning commute, as we go into tomorrow, we're going to see showers showing up late tonight, early tomorrow morning. that's goes to make for a wet commute. some areas could see up to .2 of rain. which is significant, the roads are going to be super slick. tomorrow morning, sal and steve will be talking about this. as you know, especially in fremont, or san jose, you're just going to get real light, maybe .01 of an inch. but it doesn't take much. roads will get glazed. here's the weather system. i've had reports now of people living in ukiah, santa rosa, windsor, showers falling as far south as santa rosa. very light for the most part. we're not expecting heavy rain especially in the bay area proper. in the port bay, around jener

thousands of tourists, including some from the bay area are still stranded in cabo san lucas, mexico. damage from hurricane odile is extensive. the mexican government is flying people out of cabo on military planes. terry funk called us to say he and his 12 friends have now made it to mexico city, and have booked a flight tomorrow to sfo. in all, about 26,000 foreign tourists were in cabo when the hurricane hit. and the mexican government is now working to fly them out. pulled out of school early by a district provided taxi driver and dropped off at home with no sup vision. ktvu's noel walker is live now

in the newsroom, with why the district uses taxis for transportation. >> reporter: julie, the oakland unified school district buses most of its special needs students, but about a dozen are assigned taxis. this particular boy was assigned taxi service, because of glitches in the service with the bus vender. both oakland unified, and the vender share the blame for this mistake. >> reporter: the yellow bus is one of those iconic school memories. but the beginning of the school year had some false starts and stops. >> anything could have happened to him that day. >> reporter: oakland unified school district assigned her special needs son anthony to a yellow cab to and from school. >> i was nervous, because he has special needs. >> reporter: on september 9, the taxi driver picked anthony up, and pulled him out of class

restaurants, as the drought tips the scales for anyone buying food. you may have had sticker shock at the grocery store, prices on everything, to meat and dairy is going up. >> reporter: the golden great restaurant association says the drought is pushing up prices for local restaurants. farmers markets are also feeling the impact. here at the heart of the city, farmers market. evidence of the drought's impact can be sign at the fruit and vegetable stands. >> there is some produce we usually grow other years, and this year, we're not going to grow them, because there's not enough water. >> reporter: he says his farm didn't plant corn at all this year, and grew only limited amounts of letus.

>> it's $2 a pound. >> reporter: they grew less produce compared to previous years. >> we grew only five rows of tomatoes, this year we reduced it to three. >> reporter: a temporary hiatus, drew to grout conditions. at union square, he's seen a dramatic impact on price, and availability. >> i was just talking to a farmer today that grows olives and almonds, and expects the price of almonds to skyrocket. they're cutting the almond trees down, because they don't have enough water to keep them alive. >> reporter: he says whether it's at the grocery stores, farmers markets, or local restaurants, bay area consumers are in many cases paying more. >> it's really all about the supply and demand, and that drags the price up. >> reporter: and the possible silver lining, a couple of

growers told us, while tomatoes are in less supply, they are sweeter,. people who use air bnb to rent rooms in san francisco, will soon have to pay a hotel tax. today, airbnb says it will start collecting the 14% hotel tax from visitors. guests will see it as a transient occupancy tax. airbnb is already collecting those taxes in portland, oregon. uber and lyft dropped their opposition to the bill, after teffs required to lower the

amount of insurance required when drivers don't have passengers. the polls are expected to open in scotland in less than an hour. voters will make a historic decision. whether they should break from the united kingdom. the question is simple. should scotland be an independent country? recent polls show the no vote has a narrow lead, but a significant number of scotts are undecided. the results are expected friday morning. if voters say yes to independence, the transition is expected to take 18 months. new at 10:00, a renewed effort to find a missing teenager from the south bay who vanished more than two years ago. tonight, the san jose sharks joined hundreds of people to support the search for sierra lamar. azimuth smith was at tonight's fundraiser. >> reporter: sierra lamar's mother tells me the 16-year-old was wearing a san jose sharks

the san mateo county core dmer is trying to identify a body that was found in the bay this afternoon. the sheriff's office marine unit responded to a report of a body in oyster point. at this point, there is no word on a cause of death. a murder charge was dropped today in a berkely homicide case when a material witness couldn't be found. a judge tossed out the case against 26-year-old antwan york, who is accused of killing germane davis. that killing led to another killing in oakland.

the gunman who killed alishia was out for revenge, and alicia is an isn't victim. 11-year-old alia porter was a passenger in a vehicle that veered off and hit a tree. family members described her as a vibrant girl who made the honor roll and wanted to become a teacher. >> this is a very tough time for us. we are just coming together, trying to make the best of the situation in her home, the best way we can. >> funeral plans are now being made for september 16. the family has set up a gofundme page to help. the mayor of toronto, rob

in washington, d.c., the house of representatives voted today to give president obama the authority to fund training, and arms for syrian rebels to fight islamic state extremists. many in congress say they have doubts about the president's strategy against isis. the senate is expected to vote tomorrow. president obama told troops in florida his plans are clear. >> as your commander in chief, i will not commit you and the rest of our arms forces to

also made blog mosts, mentioning times square. new york police say they plan to step up security, while the threat is valuated. iphone users got their first chance to upgrade to ios8. there were complaints about long download times. if you aren't in desperate need tore the upgrade, it might be worth it to wait for apple to clean up the bugs. apple is acknowledging problems with a handful of new apps. company officials say they hope to have them back in the app store by the end of the month. the u.s. geological survey says a lava flow on the big island of hawaii, has reached the edge of a subdivision. since union, it has been heading northeast toward

populated areas. hawaii says the flow has advanced about 350 yards since yesterday. the lava is moving through a forest area. crews say there's no threat of a wildfire. they also say res kents will get plenty -- residents will get plenty of warning, if evacuations are needed. wish we were getting more rain for you, but it looks like we're going to get just enough to slow the traffic in the morning commute. northern california looks like they're going to get a good dose of rain. we've already had reports of rain as far south now as novato. it's not picking up on the radar, but in the novato area, reports in santa rosa. certainly, cloverdale. the novato stuff was just drizzly, but it's just beginning. i think we have a good chance of seeing showers late tonight, or early tomorrow morning. it's cloud cover, just feels kind of sticky. the humidity is on its way up.

73degrees in antioch. 70 in san jose. here's the system we're tracking. drizzle, and sprinkles begin. as we head into the morning hours, it kind of pushes through. main impacts are going to be to the north. the best thing about this is it really damps down the fire conditions. they get a quarter inch, maybe a half much up by shasta. that would be a major help to the weed fire. 4:00a.m. tomorrow, you see the showers. there's plenty of them. then you get into 7:00 a.m. now you know the morning commute is going to be glazed or kind of snow. into the afternoon, around 2:00, a little something else in napa. you get the idea. widely scattered, and boom it goes away. that's it. by thursday night, friday, saturday, and sunday, we're back on schedule.
