instead of 70-degree temps we have 50s and 60s. we are down a good ten degrees. a little component of a westerly breeze for some. and most locations are losing that due south wind. very warm and humid yesterday. so fog, sun, warm. still not as humid. there is still a little bit of moisture in the air. thank goodness not as bad as we had yesterday. 80s through the interior. here is sal. steve, good morning. happy friday. we are looking at a decent commute for the toll plaza. although it is crowded, we don't have any huge delays. you can see 880 ramp which is the ramp on the left still looks pretty good if you are using fast track. it should be a very small delay for you coming into the toll plaza. about ten minutes to 15 minutes to make that drive into san francisco. 880 north and southbound

looking good. 880 southbound from downtown oakland all the way to hayward is still in good shape. and if you are driving into south bay, northbound 101 still looking good from the southern part of san jose all the way to mountain view. let's go back to the desk. topping our news this morning a south san francisco plumber behind bars after police say he beat a man to death at a gym. tara moriarty is joining us now from bally total fitness where this brutal attack happened. >> reporter: the manager doesn't come on shift for another half hour so we are hoping to talk to him. if you look to the left hand side, you can see this is a very wide open gym so everyone can see each other while they are working out. but there are two pockets in the back corner where the weights are. it's kind of hidden so the crime could have happened there without anyone noticing. this crime happened 9:30 wednesday night. by thursday morning police had

arrested 36-year-old kenneth. a gym member told us -- with a solid steel bar normally used to lift weights. gym members we spoke to this morning say they are shocked that such violence happened here. >> i haven't seen any kind of fights before. not even people yelling at each other or using profanity or getting upset or yelling or acting crazy. >> >> reporter: the victim who has not been identified was rushed to san francisco general hospital where he later died. asaco is being held without jail at the jail. the south san francisco officers and a special agent with the department of homeland security made the arrests. police will not say why that agency was involved. he hopes to get more answers a little bit later this morning. live from south san francisco i'm tara moriarty.

happening now it's iphone 6 release day and some people already have their new gadgets. the phones went on sale in asia over night. there were long lines to get into stores in japan and hong kong. here in the bay area people have also been lining up for several days to get that new iphone. alex savidge is live for us in palo alto where the doors will open in less than two hours. alex. >> reporter: mike, good morning to you the wait is almost over for those die hard apple fans. we are here outside the apple store on university avenue. you can see the black curtains are up. the apple employee is here guarding the front entrance. all of those iphone 6s they are inside. these are all the people waiting to get their hands on one of the devices. this is the line and it goes a long, long way. it goes all the way down to the end of the block and then stretches around the corner. and this line began to form on

tuesday afternoon. hundreds of people are waiting here. it goes all the way to the other side of the block. people have their lawn chairs, they have mare blankets, they have their tents set up. everyone caption to get their hands on that new iphone 6 or iphone 6 plus. of course the device boasts a larger screen. people we have talked to out here say they haven't had any second thoughts about camping out for the new phone. >> because the iphone 6 plus just seems very awesome. it's good apple is making a bigger phone. >> the other one just doesn't work. >> it does but this is better. >> reporter: apple first unvailed the new iphone at a highly publicized event a little more than a week ago. and since then the company has shattered sales records. preorders more than four million people have preordered the new iphone 6 and 6 plus. and people who did the

preorders, they won't be receiving them for another month or so and that is why you see this kind of scene out here. hundreds of people waiting in line because they can get their hands on the iphone 6 later on today. what we have is apple employees walking by here. they are going and registering people so they can reserve their phone and if people want to at this point they can then leave the line. the store opens up at 8:00 this morning. that is when people will get their hands on the new iphone 6's. live in palo alto alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >> a lot of excitement there. thank you. >> for all the nonapple fans samsung is taking orders for its newest smart phone. it will be available october 17th. preorders begin today. it features a much larger screen at 5.7 inches which is slightly bigger than the iphone 6 plus. samsung is making the note edge with a side screen to display

weather information, clocks, and other info. the company has not said when that will be released. happening today a man accused of intentionally setting the massive wild fire will be in court at 1:00 this afternoon. 37-year-old wayne allen huntsman faces one felony count of arson with aggravating factors since two firefighters were injured battling that fire. huntsman is in the eldorado county jail on $10 million bond. huntsman set the fire last saturday in very steep terrain just minutes after the fire started a cal fire investigator was on the scene and he found the shot where the fire was developed. that fire is at 73,000 acres now with only 10% contained. nearly 3,000 people had to evacuate their homes and a total of 12,000 homes are threatened. >> he doesn't rank up with child no testless tours but --

molesters but he is not far behind. >> it costs $5 million a day to fight that fire and the federal government has agreed to pay 75% of california's cost. huntsman has prior convictions for assault, vehicle theft, and receiving stolen property but not arson. now ktvu news had a chance to talk to huntsman's sister. tamny told us on -- tammy told us on the phone that the arrest stuns her. she also believes the charges will not stick. >> he has worked with my step dad doing tree work. we have always been out in the wilderness. we have gone camping numerous times. >> she told us her brother is a good person and they were extremely close when they grew up together in santa cruz. we asked about huntsman

criminal history and she insists he put all of those problems behind him. fire crews are close to fully containing the other wild fire. the wild fire in the city of weed is 85% contained. however, there was a flair up yesterday which raised the burn acreage to 479-acre. 150 homes and businesses have been damaged or destroyed with another 1,000 still in harms way. this map here shows the ten major wild fires burning in california. most of them are in northern and central part of the state. 6600 firefighters are working on these fires. redwood city recycle her has agreed to pay a large fine for polluting the bay. had two large fines last year. this time the environmental protection agency ordered simms to pay inertly $190,000 -- pay nearly $19,000. that belt moves metal from a shredder on to boats. we are learning police were

police took a report but it appears the vandalism is rundale. >> we did not find any damage here within the station here. there were no threats. no letters. no phone calls or anything like that. and crews were safe. >> san jose fire stations do not have surveillance cameras but video from nearby businesses can help in the investigation. three bay area lawmakers are calling encases' attorney general to investigate the latest controversy tied to the san bruno pipeline explosion. on monday three executives were

where a mountain lion was seen standing over a dead deer last week. authorities caution people to be smart when it comes to mountain lion habitat. there are more than 46,000 mountain lions living in the bay area. parking spots will be a bit greener. that is because it is parking day. several cities including san francisco, san jose, and morgan hill are taking part but beaware you do still have to feed the meter. before you park you have to get to that destination. let's check 234 with sal and see how you are looking. >> a little bit there, mike. that is right. good morning to you once again on this friday. things are a little better but there is still a little bit of a crowd out there. let's take a look at the golden gate bridge coming in from marin county. it is a very nice drive heading down to the toll plaza. there are no major problems on the commute in that part of san francisco over to downtown. and if you are driving on

westbound bay bridge, we talked about this about a 10-15 minute drive and 880 is getting a little bit more crowded. san jose into south bay this traffic looks okay as you drive on 101, 280 and 85. 580 westbound to grant hind we have a crash there. a little bit of slow traffic. for the most part it is a little belter today than it has -- better today than it has been for the last few days. 6:16 let's go to steve. sal, thank you. good morning everybody. low clouds anding to around. the low cloud deck a by-product of yesterday's system. humidity is down. thank goodness. man, yesterday was tough for us. the low. there it goes. it's a weak little guy but it's on its way to southern california. it will put on the air breaks. and then eject out on sunday. giving us partly cloudy skies. still shower activity near reno. rain ends, morning fog and the rain is done from yesterday. even though not everybody got in on it. there were pretty good totals

in the russian river. friday morning fog. it will be mild to warm. especially coast and bay. 50s instead of near 70. so we are down a good 5-10 degrees for some on these lows. napa airport 60 in fog. and then the higher elevations they have cooled down. we are seeing a little different pattern there. west, southwest at 12. at least it's not due south. yesterday it was due south. and northwest san jose things are quieting down in southern california. arizona does a little bit. nothing compared to where it was. there is still a tropical storm. 70 miles an hour polo. it though is not nearly the beast if you will that odile was and it's showing every sign

of moving west, northwest away from cabo san lucas. the stirring currents are not as favorable. 45 in tahoe. 60s from sacramento to ukiah and monterey. and l.a. at 70 degrees. low clouds are there and will burn off. it looks like a quiet weekend. fog, nights and mornings. but then our senator mccain the low will be down here. watch how that ejects out. if you are heading up to the citier we could get shower activity. i want to direct your attention to next wednesday. it looks like a pattern change. we'll see. we'll see ways away. fog, sun, warm but not as humid. and it's really warm on the coast because water temps are about 64-65 degrees. so above average temps san francisco oakland parts of the bay. inland temps are near average to slightly above. they are all pretty close to where they should be. about the same on saturday.

it looks like gradual cooling trend. and then a much cooler pattern by tuesday. >> thank you, steve. the largest initial public offering a stock here in the u.s. hits wall street today. stock in alibaba's holding company will trade in the next few hours. the stock price set at $68 a fair. that makes the company worth $21.8 billion. most analysts expects alibaba's price to go upright away because there is very high demand. the tech equipment brooks is shutting down its petaluma facility. 85 people are expected to be laid off from the plant on friday. theybrooks says most of the work has been moved to asia and producing equipment in sonoma county and shipping it overseas is expensive and difficult. governor brown signed new legislation in hollywood. it's the new program that more

trying to get home. mexican police are increasing patrols after lewders emptied store shelves. a couple said they felt very unsafe. the hurricane destroyed hotels, ripped down trees and caused massive flooding. the heavily damaged airport is being powered by emergency generators. >> we didn't know when we were going to get out. we are happy we did. there is a lot of people still there and i hope they send more planes. there weren't enough planes. there was not enough military. there was not enough police. >> consulate officials tell ktvu there were about 20,000 tourists, most of them american in cabo during that storm and 5,000 had left by early yesterday afternoon. san francisco supervisors scott weiner is speaking out about his decision to take the hiv prevention medication. daily use of true vada can reduce the risk of contracting hiv by up to 99%.

florida, hawaii, take your pick. that was extremely humid. the water temps are still about 65 warm degrees. so the coast will be near 70 degrees. there is a tropical feel there. but aa lot more 50 -- but a lot more 50s and lower 60s. 50s for lafayette. walnut creek is in there. a little more westerly for some. so once the fog and there is fog especially in the north bay. it will be sunny, it will be mild to warm. not as humid but still muggy for us. 80s through the interior. 70s around the bay. right now we are looking at a commute where traffic is getting busier. but we don't have too much going on. this is highway 24. between pleasant hill road and the caldecott tunnel. it's an eight minute drive.

between walnut creekish and oakland it's not bad. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, there is a little bit of a wait going on. it seems to be a little milder than it was the other day. there are no major problems. highway 4 is a little slow in antioch. we will see slow traffic in pittsburgh gets over to concord. highway 36 is open now. it will close tonight. friday 10:00. and will reopen monday at 5:00 a.m.. they will be doing repaving work and 37 out of commission for this entire weekend and for next weekend. let's go back to the desk. a south san francisco plumber is in jail this morning after police say he beat a man to death at a gym. ktvu tara moriarty is joining us live this morning from bally total fitness where word of the assault is sending shock wave through the area. >> reporter: the manager said they will be taking extra security precautions here at the gym. but what exactly those are, they haven't told us. we know a lot of people have

expressed surprise over what happened inside of this gym. you can see how wide open it is and how it would be difficult to pull something like this off without a lot of witnesses. the killing happened around 9:30 wednesday night and by thursday morning, police had arrested 46-year-old kenneth asaco on homicide charges. gym member told police asaco attacked another gym member with a solid steel bar normally used to lift weights. >> i knew it was a severe blow to his fore head. it was bloody. but i asked my brother how is he? is he dead? is he going to make it? i go i don't know. >> reporter: we're here at the bally total fitness. the victim that has not been identified was rushed to san francisco general hospital where he later died. asaco is being held without bail at the san mateo jail. south san francisco officers and a special agent with the department of homeland security made the arrest. police will not say why that

agency was involved. we're live in south san francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. happening now the big day is here for apple fans if you didn't preorder you have top wait or wait in line for the iphone 6 and the very popular bigger iphone 6 plus. ktvu alex savidge is outside the apple store in palo alto. alex, stores don't know how many phones they will get. >> reporter: pam, it is true. the people all the way at the end of the long line they could be out of luck. but they have a sense of optimism this morning. this is a sea of people that you are up against. if you are waiting in this line. we are not even halfway down this line and you can see hundreds of people leading up to the entrance to the apple store which is up there on the right hand side. and that is where all the activity is focused this morning. this is the store in palo alto on university avenue.

this line first began forming tuesday afternoon and take a look at how far it stretches. it goes all the way to the opposed side of this block. people have their lawn chairs with them, they have blankets and tents set up. and of course they are all here for the bigger screen. that is what everybody is telling us. they want to get their happened on the new iphone 6 plus. most people are looking for the plus. but of course you can also get the iphone 6 with the slightly smaller screen as well. the device also has plenty of other upgrades and toys people are excited about too. one of the first people in line we talked to him a short time ago. he told me the last few days have been rough. he has been sleeping on the sidewalk. well i guess we will not hear from him. we don't have his sound bite cued up yet. what he said is it's been difficult for him. he's been sleeping on the sidewalk and he confessed to maybe he got here a tad bit early because he didn't see anybody else start to line up for at least another day after he was here. so in any case, people are

anxious. you can see as we bring you back out here to a live picture some of the apple employees are walking the lines here. they are handing out water bottles and snacks and coffee. just trying to make sure people are comfortable here as they wait in this line. hundreds of people in this line. some people near the front of the line they have already registered so they will be guaranteed their phones. the folks further back no guarantees there will be enough phones here. again the people at the back of the line they are keeping their fingers crossed. live in palo alto alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. there is a bit of a scare for one man in australia who got his hands on the iphone 6. >> we have all dropped our phone but not usually when you walk right out of the store and happened on live tv.

an interview with television station in sydney. he was one of the first ones out of the store. it fell right on to the concrete. was it face down. no. luckily it was face up and it didn't break. this morning we are learning new details about 49er ray mcdonald domestic violence case. they revealed -- made three months before his arrest. he responded from a 911 call saying his fiance grabbed his gun during a heated argument. >> no shots were fired but the police report says the woman held the gun at her side until the man told her he was calling police. >> mr. mcdonald felt strongly enough that he needed to call 911 as a result of his fiance possessing and holding a

handgun. that in and of itself is very significant. he obviously did call 911 for a reason. >> and legal experts say this incident could help mcdonald if he plans to say he was acting in self-defense when he was arrested on charges he attacked his pregnant fiance three months later. the tackle has not officially been charged after three weeks after that defense. you can now add the name 4er legend jerry rice to the growing list of people who strongly disagree with the decision to play mcdonald. >> it's important to let people know we are not going to tolerate that. players need to recognize look if i do something like that, i'm going to get suspended or i could be banned from the league. >> jerry rice has joined 49er greats in publicically stating mcdonald should be benched.

an oakland father remains in jail in the shooting with his own son. he is being charged with child endangerment and gun charges in connection with the shooting last week. police say he he was pushing his 20-month-old son in a stroller when the pistol fell out of his pants and went off. the baby was shot in the shoulder but is expected to be okay. tuo pled not guilty to the charges. just after 11:00 last night a news crew spotted flames coming in the parking lot on 29th avenue. flames raced up a giant palm tree. fire crews quickly responded and put that fire out before it spread and there are no injuries reported. the city of oakland is making an about face in which company collects its garbage. the city will give its $1 billion garbage back to waste management. they awarded the contract to a less experienced company called

california waste solutions. the new deal will have waste management pick up trash and drop its lawsuit against the city. california waste solutions will now handle only the city's recycling. oakland city council is scheduled to vote on the deal on monday. there is a big detour for north bay drivers this weekend. highway 37 which is the main road connecting solano, sonoma, and marin counties will be closed in both directions. cal tran will shut down that road between route 121 at sonoma raceway and highway 59. that closure starts at 10:00 tonight. crews needs road cleared of all traffic while they do the repaving work. highway 37 is scheduled to reopen by 5:00 monday morning. the road will be closed again though for more work on the following weekend. accused arsonist. the santa cruz county man facing charges for starting one of the most destructive wild fires burning right now in northern california. coming up in 20 minutes reaction from his family.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 6:42 is the time. there is a new health threat in california particularly for children. the state is seeing its first cases of highly contagious respiratory illness. katie utehs is live in walnut creek with what parents should knee. katie. >> reporter: good morning. i just spoke with two educators. that are doing the good work of teaching young children to sneeze into their elbows and wash their hands frequently. and really that is the only way to stop the spread of the virus. there are four confirmed cases in california. interin children it can cause serious respiratory illnesses.

including wheezing as they try to breathe. there is no cure for the virus so local teachers and health experts say prevention is key. >> as an adult i feel like i got my flu shot on wednesday i feel like i'm taking precautions for me. as an educator, it's our role to educate people. so when we learn something, we can help parents and children be more aware. >> reporter: the department of public health says parents should take children to the doctor if they have any difficulties breathing. kids with asthma are especially at risk for inter enterovirus. and expects the virus to spread in the coming weeks. live in walnut creek katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. happening right now a hearing on capitol hill looking into the threat of radicalized americans becoming agents of

islamic extremists groups and carrying out attacks right here in the u.s.. this is a live picture of the house foreign affairs committee. experts are testifying about the threat for what is called foreign fighters. people with u.s. passports that have trained with islamic groups in the middle east. authorizing weapons and training. the islamic state terror group has relesioned a new video featuring a british hostage it shows john cantily reading from a script. saying the islamic state has been misrepresented by western media and he will reveal the truth about the group in future messages. cantily was taken hostage in november 2012. it happened in the middle of an ethic workshop. it featured avid ye screen and

we are working on for mornings on 2. now back to you on the morning news. let's go right over to sal and a quick look at the roadways. hey there sal. >> we have a problem that is getting into san francisco. westbound bay bridge will be effected because there is a crash in the city on the san francisco side of the bridge. unfortunately it's very foggy. we usually have a camera that can see this. but the bay bridge traffic is effected by a crash on the san francisco side. on west 80 at the 101 split. so again if you are trying to get into san francisco, please give yourself extra time. this kind of messed up our morning commute. had been going pretty well but now we have a big back up getting into the city. i also want to mention the traffic on the san mateo bridge might be a decent alternate for you. it looks okay. you might want to get over the bay using that instead. once there is a crash on the bay bridge it usually takes awhile. northbound 101 there is a crash there. i want to mention highway 50 is

a woman is in critical condition after crashing a stolen car into three other vehicles in san francisco. police say the driver went through a stop sign at 18th and bryant around 7:00 last night. he smash into a mini cooper and two other parked cars. the driver of the stolen vehicle was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. the passenger was also hurt and the driver of the mini cooper suffered minor injuries. that is after its busiest terminal was shut down for three hours yesterday. the airport was placed on lock down while officers searched for a shooting suspect who they believe drove to the airport and hiding in a parking garage. he was eventually tarkenton custody. two other people were arrested in connection with that
