really, it's really cancelled. so it was just surreal. cancelled for their safety. after burning for a week, smoke from the explosive king fire spreads. and sends these triathletes home. it's one of the most popular competitions. smoke from a fire made it

difficult and danger for them to week. all week, organizers said the race was on, hoping it would be. even as the fire raged. more than 3,000 competitors waiting on the breach. with shouts, some cried. >> i had tears too. then my husband came. >> reporter: this athlete trained for three months. >> i had a banana ready. i even made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. i had towels to dry off after the swim. >> reporter: had the iron man happened, she would still be running right now. the last leg of a 15 hour race.

participants pay up to $3,000 to enter. there's only a handful of iron man competitions so competitors plan ahead and travel far. >> at noon, 1:00 it was really bad. you couldn't see in front of you. it was pretty bad smoke. >> reporter: trivalley racers took a picture before they left. not the end they wanted. >> if this is the race you wanted to qualify for, it takes it really difficult. there's other races but there's in other parts of the world. >> reporter: competitors did not let smoke stop them. they took to the race any way. >> we're going for a ride and we're going for a run. >> this is a fun work out. you have to have a positive atty to do.

right -- positive attitude. right when we got here the sun was rising, so i can say i was swimming in lake tahoe when the sun was rising. >> it's like walking around a camp site all day but without the smores. >> reporter: this picture of disappointment. a good natured pout. that club sent 40 racer and volunteers. you may recall the rim fire last fall cancelled the lake tahoe triathelon. the diamond international resort at south lake tahoe evacuated all guests. the hotel reopened today, the staff was concerned about the direction of the fire and the smoke in the air.

>> there was a little help from above in the fight against this fire. the king fire is now 17% contained and has grown to more than 80,000 acres. more than 2,000 people remain evacuated because their homes are threatened by the flames. in just one week, the wildfire has swept 50 miles north from its origin outside sacramento to the tahoe national forest. but firefighters today say they got some help from mother nature in the form of lower temperatures and some moisture in the air. >> humidity is a little bit higher. and the wind is to our backs right now. right now the fire just kind of backing on itself is not burning with intensity. a man from pollock pines is accused of intentionally setting the fire. william huntsville has pled not guilty. >> i know it wasn't much but anything makes a difference. >> any little bit helps.

rainfall actually measurable. most rain gauges right around the fire zone around .2 to .4. this was the radar late this morning and into the afternoon hours. right now, no rainfall in the area. in fact, here is the latest on the satellite. just a few lingering clouds out thereto with partly cloudy skies. here's a look from earlier today indicative of all the moisture in place. right now it's 66 degrees in pollock pines. take a look at the fire zone. the forecast for tomorrow, thankfully we're not forecasting strong winds but still a bit of a breeze out there. as far as temperatures the higher terrain in the upper 60s, lower elevations right around 80 degrees. but we do not have any warnings in place, no red flag warnings in place through the sierra tomorrow. just a bit of a breeze with a couple of changes in the weather pattern. i'm tracking a weather system that will bring rain to the

sierra and rain here. i'll have more coming up at 10:35. you can stay up to date with the latest fire conditions with our new ktvu weather app plus you can get bay area weather information, it's available on iphones and android tablets and smart phones. it happened at the howard johnson in and suites right off interstate 80. police say one victim was shot several times and pronounced dead at the scene. the other victim was shot once in the head and was taken to a hospital. there's no word yet on that victim's condition. police say they're looking for at least three men who left the hotel in a black sedan. if you have any information on the shooting you're asked to call vallejo police. police in the central valley recaptured the last of those five inmates who escaped on a jail sunday night. the prisoners broke out of the mad era county jail just north of fresno. four of the inmates were

captured 24 hours after they escaped and a fifth was found today. authorities say all five are gang members facing charges racing from attempted murder to burglary. it's still unclear tonight just how the fire broke out. three young men are facing murder charges in san jose last month. the three men are in their early 20s. they were booked into the santa clara jail on suspicion of murder. the three suspects are accused of killing lawrence roel santrias on august 22nd at the parking lot of a 7/11. before santrias was shot he had a brief exchange with the men that were in the car. santrias was pronounced dead at the scene. yellow police tape blocks an interception at a collision. that cyclist suffered critical injuries. tonight a team is looking at what happened.

and if charges should be filed. ktvu's cristina rendon tells us about neighbors efforts to try to help that injured cyclist. a crash that happened in seconds turned this berkeley hills neighborhood into a crime scene for hours. police say a cyclist traveling southbound collided with a car headed east on unis around 6:30 this morning. >> it's a recently steep road. we do a group ride out here every sunday. i'm always telling people, keep an eye out and be careful. >> reporter: the impact tossed the cyclist. >> this is a tragedy and it's not unexpected. >> reporter: john rucula says the hillside sees many cyclists who chronically blow through many intersections. >> with all the trees and houses it can be hard to see,

either stop signs or if a car is coming. so it's really easy to get to just miss if somebody else is coming. >> reporter: the area is a popular spot for cyclists who could only watch as crime scene investigators diagrammed a crash, carefully taking photos of witnesses. >> we have spoken to several and believe that we have a good accounting of what occurred here. >> reporter: police reminding cyclists to obey the rules of road. >> it's easy to forget that you're that as -- that vulnerable when you're out all day riding a bike. >> cristina rendon, ktvu news. police are investigating a robbery that happened outside of a house party. a man in his 20s was reportedly stabbed in the chest. a witness tells us the violence stemmed from a fight between

two groups of people outside the party. there's no word yet on the victim's condition or if police have made any arrests. we now know the names of the men shot and killed in richmond last night. dayton daily and 20-year-old clarence wallace were both shot around 5:30 at fourth and bissell streets. bailey was pronounced dead at the scene while bissell died at the hospital. the party was sprayed by 44 rounds of gunfire on thursday. police have been investigating both injuries. so far no arrests have been made. 42-year-old mitchell curtis powell was arrested after a third incident near the fairfax police department. a similar incident happened less than a mile away in fairfax two weeks ago. police say powell is now booked in the marin county jail. an investigation is under way in san francisco to find

out how gallons of fuel spilled into the bay out of a world war ii era ship. the leak happened on the o' bryant. that spill created a sheen on the water near the ship. measuring about 100 by 150 yards. today crews surrounded the spill with about 6,000 feet of boom and used vacuum trucks and skimming vessels to try to remove the fuel. a missing santa rosa team is back home tonight. rebecca weaver's family reported her missing back on wednesday. they were concerned because she requires daily medication. police launched a search but learned this morning that she left her home voluntarily. weaver returned home after she realized that her family and police were looking for her. >> instantly i saw this flash of something take off from the front of the airplane.

he crash landed his plane in a remote area of the sierra nevada. many spent 18 hours in the cold before being rescued. his family calls it a miracle. for the first time we're hearing about what went wrong 13,000 feet in the air. tim castle says it was his faith and determination to get back to his family that helped him survive last monday's plane crash. ktvu's azenith smith live with his remarkable story, azenith. >> reporter: considering what he went through, tim castle is a very tough guy. he chokedded up twice. once when we talk about his family, and then when he talk

about his rescue. >> did my normal preflight check. did my normal preflight briefing. >> reporter: the 65-year-old pilot took off in his piper cherokee plane. yet 20 minutes away from his destination and high above the valley his plane split in half. >> i saw a flash of something take off from the front of the airplane. it started vibrating so violently that i could see the metal around and fiberglass around the front of the airplane start to buckle and shift. the plane felt like it was moving like this. >> reporter: descending 45 miles per minute, he struggled

to escape. >> as i was fighting this airplane down. i was thinking please heavenly father let me at least survive this. and i did. >> reporter: he crawled out of his plane with three broken ribs, two sprained angles. the one thing racing through his mind. >> i was worried about her. about my wife. because i knew that she wouldn't know what was going on. and over the next several days it would be difficult for her. >> i didn't care about the plane. i didn't care about anything in the plane except him. and, just let us find him. >> reporter: he wrapped himself with blankets and airplane covers. the next day, rescuers spotted him. >> as i look up to my right i

could see two rangers coming. it was pretty nice. >> reporter: the former eagle spot attributing his faith, training as a pilot and motivation to seeing his family again. now he can't stop counting his blessings. >> first blessing was i walked out of the aircraft. hobbled out of the aircraft and was able to survive the next night and would have survived more had i had to. >> reporter: now he says his guardian angel was his co-pilot on that plane. the family is now working on removing the wreckage. live in san jose, azenith smith, ktvu channel 2 news. >> some story. new at 10:00 tonight, san francisco firefighters jumped into action to rescue a person and a dog trapped on a cliff .

we're told the dog went over a cliff and the owner tried to rescue the animal. there were no injuries reported. authorities looking for a cop killer say they found an automatic weapon that likely belongs to the suspect. eric freene is accused of ambushing authorities. they believe he is hiding in west virginia and hid his weapons for future use. the man who climbed the fence of the white house is expected to appear before court tomorrow. he made it across the lawn and to the white house before he was stopped. the 32-year-old is a veteran

who served three tours in iraq. his stepson says he suffered from post-traumatic disorder and needs treatment. he was awarded several medals including a marksman badge. to fight with the islamic state. other wise known as isis or isil. the president is proposing a resolution compelling countries to adopt laws making it illegal for citizens to travel abroad to join terrorist organizations. u.s. intelligence officials estimate that 15,000 foreign fighters are now in iraq and syria. more than 2,000 are thought to be europeans along with 100 americans. meantime the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. said other nations are pledging support for the night against the sunni extremists however she would not name

those countries or detail their level of involvement. hundreds of people rallied for climate change. the people's climate march through manhattan was part of an international day of action that included about 2,800 events worldwide. the event had a party like atmosphere that focused on the serious issue of global warming. organizers say it drew more than 300,000 people. among them the u.n. secretary general key moon, former vice president al gore and actors decaprio and mark rufilo who says he is doing it for his children. >> i want to do my best to give them the best world that they deserve to have. >> climate change is the defining issue of our time. and there's no time to lose if we do not take action now. we will have to pay much more. >> today's event precede a

officers change hats from cops to social workers to therapists. >> it could be something that can kind of go sideways pretty quickly. >> reporter: san francisco has a wealth of services to get people off the streets and into treatment programs. yet many refuse. every day, more and more people come here especially into the haute in search of something that often doesn't exist. >> you can offer people help. you can offer them all the resources but you can't force their hand in doing that. >> reporter: of the city's 1,600 patrol officers about 200 are trained in crisis intervention. james and lilly says the training has been invaluable and they point to the help they gave this woman, amanda. >> i've been clean 11 years, he's been clean longer than that. >> it's essential that people who live in the community whether they're residents, merchants or transients they need to feel that police are all agents for them. >> these two members of the

crisis intervention team clearly seem dedicated to try to make the streets safe for everyone. the san francisco police academy has a new class of officers who are learning the techniques used by the cit. protesters today called for an end to the war in ukraine. tens of thousands of people marched in moscow to call to an end to the war between russia and rebels. since the fighting began between ukrainian forces and prorussian separatists back in april more than 3,000 people have died. >> it's an international country, it's a war. the real victims and with one country invading the territory

businesses to rebuild. noelle walker was in napa where many took time away from clean up to clear their minds. >> when justin prizer planned to remodel it was just the kitchen. >> this big box is a new sink. >> reporter: the quake turned his plans upside down. >> the plastic walls actually started to come down. >> reporter: the earthquake turned a kitchen reno into a whole house renovation when it shook century old plastic to the floor and broke windows. >> today i'm finally at that point where i'm finally finished with destruction. >> reporter: there's still destruction visible in napa and the recovery and rebuilding is taking a toll. rebuilding napa takes many helping hands. >> making people feel better. >> it means a big thing. before i came here my neck was full of knots and a migraine headache and i feel it just melting away. >> reporter: a rebuild napa

and the group next door says mcdonald should be off the field until the issues surrounding his domestic violence arrest are resolved. they submitted a proposed resolution to the city of santa clara but they were told they missed the deadline for tuesday night's council meeting. dianne feinstein is weighing in on the nfl's handling of the recent incidents. >> this has gone on too long. it is getting too bad. and this chain, these teams have to set an example for the rest of society. >> feinstein says she believes the a player is arrested he should be suspended. meantime san jose police tells us a burglary was reported at ray mcdonald's home last night around 10:45. sours sours-- sources tell us the home was empty at the time of the break-in and the thieves

stole some items which were mostly electronics. authorities are trying to find a 48-year-old man who could be at risk. friends and family say he just wasn't acting like himself then just disappeared without his wallet or cell phone. he was wearing a suit but it's not known what color. authorities in the peninsula are warning people about another mountain lion sighting. it's the second time this weekend. this comes just weeks after a 6- year-old cupertino boy was attacked. that mountain lion was killed and the boy is recovering. the iphone hacker is at it again with the release of nude photos of celebrities.

other photos have surfaced including photos of kim kardashian, hope solo and others. the leaks began three weeks ago with photos of lauren. and a call to turn down the volume at this year's electronic music festival apparently worked. >> about 20,000 people were expected at the two day event at shoreline amphitheater. this year concert officials repositioned stages and speakers to lower the volume after more than 100 complaints from neighbors about the noise last year. police say they received far fewer complaints this weekend. officers say they made about 100 arrests mostly all drug related. san francisco is known for its festivals that sometimes push limits. the one of a kind tradition

there. closer to half-moon bay, san francisco, oakland, hayward even parts of the north bay as well. the clouds will continue to get their act together and push back into the bay overnight. current number is 64 in san jose. oakland 66. santa rosa 61 degrees and take a look at these wind speed out toward fairfield. winds sustained at 28 gusting to 33 miles per hour. oakland airport wind out of the west at 12 miles per hour. fall begins tomorrow evening, the equinox at 7:29. basically the last day of summer as we get ready for the start of fall tomorrow. lots of cloud cover out there near the coast and near the bay. areas of fog with mostly sunny skies. our short term forecast model picking up a chance at 7:00. still patchy fog for the

numbers over the next couple of days and we will gradually thicken up the clouds on wednesday. there's our rain clouds on thursday. we will trend back up, especially by sunday. day seven there back into the upper 80s well inland. we'll keep our fingers crossed keep that in mind for your morning commute. police in the east bay are trying to upgrade a controversial tracking system potentially making it everyone more powerful. internal records from oakland police show that opd, fremont police and the alameda county district attorney's office are jointly applying for federal money to upgrade a device called a sting ray. it allows police to find a cell phone's location within just a few feet. the privacy advocates say everyone can have their cell signal intercepted criminal or not. and the new capabilities are
