good morning 37 thank you for joining us. monday morning september 22nd i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. you know steve knows all what is is ahead for us. >> we have a lot of low clouds and very mild conditions. warm ocean temps and very mild lows. a lot of them in the mid 60s. a couple systems inching closer. there is a couple i mean a couple. there is a lot of 60s here. 66 sfo. temperatures expect to the north are mainly in the 60s. there are a few 50s here. calistoga is in there. petaluma low 60. 57 lake port. it's a little cool for some. a west or northwest breeze for almost everybody here. we do have an on shore push. low clouds will burn off today.

fog, sun, mild. humidity is high. even though temps are near average here is sal. about 19 minutes not really a huge problem here. the traffic continues to move along very nicely. all the way down to the bay bridge toll plaza. there are no major problems get into the area. i will mention in case you are joining us. highway 37. it opened on saturday. it happened well ahead. it has been open. traffic is normal there. we are following a serious crash involving two cars on

highway 4. tara moriarty is joining us live from the crash scene in pittsburg. >> reporter: what is ewe about -- unique about this crash it starred on the freeway but ended on a frontage reamed rode. the tow truck is taking away a white pickup that flipped over just after 5:00 this morning after it crashed with an orange colored car on the freeway. the chp says the two cars hit each other. perhaps during a lane change. and the white pickup went sailing over the highway barrier and on to this road. there is a lot of glass and debris all over the roadway here. the driver of the pickup suffered cuts to the fore head but some minor injuries. the other driver walked away without a crash. highway 4 westbound is in the direction of the morning commute. although the crash didn't happen on the freeway, drivers have slowed down a bit to look at the scene. as you can see if you come back

here live, right through the railway, you can see everything is looking sluggish at the moment. we're live in pittsburg i'm tara moriarty dust. the california highway patrol is investigating a deadly accident involving a young woman walking on the freeway near walnut creek. it happened just after 11:00 last night on interstate 680. chp says a woman in her 20s got out of her car and ran in front of another car and immediately hit and killed. investigators say her car had broken down and she had called a coworker for assistance shortly before that deadly accident. the driver stopped and now cooperating with investigators. the chp is also investigating a deadly accident on northbound 880 in san jose. that happened a the 10:00 last night near past come road. according top officers two cars crashed, someone was ejected from the car. that person died at the scene. all lanes were shut down for several hours but have since reopened.

time is 6:03. vallejo police searching for the gun involved in a deadly shooting outside of a motel. it happened late yesterday near interstate 80. a 23-year-old man was shot several times. he was pronounced dead at the scene. a second victim a man in his 70s was also shot but is expected to survive. a gunman escaped in a black car. we still don't know what led up to the shootings. several people out of their homes after two fires that started within three hours of each other. the first one broke out just after 4:00 yesterday afternoon on santa clara avenue. firefighters blame unattended food on the stove that caught fire and spread. the second fire was reported on buena vista avenue shortly after 6:30. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. the secret service is reviewing security procedures at the white house after a man jumped over the fence and made it inside. it happened friday evening just

after president obama and his daughters left the white house boarding a helicopter on the south lawn. four minutes later on the other side of the building a man armed with a knife jumped the fence and ran into the north lawn and got into the white house before being stopped by the secret service. >> have to do something with the fence. even if it's something as simple as curving the bars over toward the street side. the pennsylvania avenue side. right now they don't have time. >> the man that jumped over the fence 42-year-old omar gonzalez is due in court today. gonzalez is an army veteran that served three tours in iraq. his stepson says he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and needs treatment. three afghan military officers that came here to the u.s. for training were reported missing over the weekend. the men arrived september 11th at joint based cape cod massachusetts for military exercises. they were last seen saturday night at a shopping mall in

that area. the massachusetts national guard says all three had been cleared by the state department and there is no indication that they are a threat to the public. some people in san francisco's dolores heights neighborhood are upset about a home construction project. construction started about 17 months ago and according to the san francisco chronicle, neighbors complain about the constant construction noise and they say they haven't been able to park outside of their homes since the renovation work started. many filed complaints to the city but they say nothing has been done. zuckerberg and his wife have filed for at least ten construction permits worth several million dollars. uc berkeley -- infielder jeff kept remember him? he is donating more than $1.5 million to his former school. he wants the money spent on helping female athletes at cal

time is 6:10. yesterday in kenya people marked four years after a gunman killed people at a mall.

al-shabab militants claim responsibility for that attack. back in this country investigators in pennsylvania may have found one of the weapons belonged to the accused cop killer. it's an ak47 style gun. there it is. according to authorities they think the alleged shooter eric frein was planning to use it in the future. he's accused of ambushing two state troopers in pennsylvania september 12th outside the police barracks. one of them died, the other was injured. investigators believe frein is still hiding out in a rugged forest. he was added to the fbi's ten most wanted list last week. all five inmates that escaped from a central valley jail are back in custody. four of the inmates were captured in maine terra on saturday night. the fifth was found yesterday. authorities say all five were

gang members. it's still unclear exactly how they escaped. 2 investigates discovers police are trying to upgrade a controversial cell phone tracking system. possibly making it even more powerful. internal records from oakland police show opd, fremont police, and the alameda county district attorneys office are upgrading a device called a sting ray. this allows them to find the location with a few feet. anyone nearby can have their cell phone systems intercepted. >> law enforcement agencies have these devices, are using these devices, but we're not really sure how they are using them. how frequently they are using them. and there is a lot of secret city about that process. >> tonight at 5. 2

investigators reveal what we know about the sting ray. its capabilities and concerns that your privacy may be at risk. for the first time we are hearing from the pilot that was forced to crash lane his plane in new york. 65-year-old tim cassell was making his regular trip from san jose to his family's resort in death valley. 20 minutes away from his destination, the plane's propeller broke in half. his plane began hurdling toward the ground at 2,000 feet per minute before crashing in a remote canyon. he was able to crawl out of the wreckage. his only thought surviving long enough to see his family. >> i was worried about her. about my wife. i knew that she wouldn't know what was going on. over the next several days it would be difficult for her. >> i didn't care about the plane be i didn't care about anything in the plane expect

for him. >> cassell was found the next day by rangers. he is recovering from three broken ribs, cuts, and a fracture in his face. it is the biggest slide on mount chaeta in 20 years. this slide could be blamed on the drought. tornado cleanup is under way in rochester hills, michigan. a tornado touched down there over the weekend. no one was hurt during the brief but powerful storm. it was an f-1 tornado. severely damaged several homes and knocked down power lines. police are looking for a woman caught on video stealing a package from the front porch of a home. it shows the woman running up to the door and leaving the package. the police department has also

posted this video on its youtube page hoping someone will recognize her. the woman is about 25-30 years old. weighing about 25 pounds with long blond hair. nip with information is asked to call police. you are busy already. >> we are busy. we do have highway 4 look for you. highway 4 dave and pam is a little slow. we had that earlier crash that really didn't back up traffic opinion it was more of an eyesore. the lanes were not blocked. it's already slow from lone tree to lodge. you get to the toll plaza, we have a 25 minute delay between the oakland side and san francisco. have a lot of slow traffic getting out to the bridge. once you make it on to the

span, it does look good. already slow on the altamont pass. and also 680 going away from 580 heading down to pree mont it's slow through almost all of pleasanton. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a very good morning. counting down summer highway. we have until 7:29 tonight that we can say hello to autumn, fall. today will feel not really fall like yet. it did a little bit yesterday with that low cloud deck. more so later in the week. they will be slow to burn off. probably sooner than yesterday. series of weak systems moving into the north. that keeps the fog bumped up. a few 50s farther to the north. a lot of 60s here. concord 63. same toward san ramon. a lot of low 60s here with that

low cloud deck. sfo west. san jose west. so the westerly breeze or some kind of it is there. very warm ocean temps. 64 warm degrees. tropical clouds looks like they are finally clearing out of the desert southwest. just a little bit hanging on. over all tropical storm polo did what we thought this time. did not zig instead of zag. it went out to sea. it fell apart. it was never as strong as odile. odile made category four. this was a very weak hurricane. so don't have to worry about that anyone. it is gone for now. 55 ukiah. sacramento at 60. next couple of series of systems are moving into the

north. there is a lot of energy out here. next system looks like thursday morning. it looks like rain for the north bay. not until late wednesday. this will probably slow down but there is our system. when they align like that, they stall out a little bit. and early thursday. that is projection right now. still have a ways to go. same for the rainfall projections. it looks good up to the north. lesser amounts farther south. fog, sun, mild. breezy at times. probably not as windy as yesterday. warm along the coast or those ocean temps. 70s to very low 80s. and 60s and 70s coast and bay. temperatures on the mild side here. a lot of moisture. a little warmer tuesday. we cloud it up wednesday night.

looks like rain on thursday to the north. and lingering friday. maybe even into saturday morning. >> thank you. used car prices are sliding as more people are trading in their old cars. it is good news for shoppers but could spell trouble for more car sales. that brings down the price. auto dealers say the supply of used cars could continue to grow for a couple of years. aaa reports gas prices are also falling as oil companies switch over to the cheaper winter blend of glass. san francisco has the highest prices in the country at $3.89. around the rest of the bay area prices $3.75. that is 25 cents lower than last year. prices could continue to slip unless crude oil production is interrupted for some reason. hundreds of thousands of people marching for change.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. two people died, 48 others hurt after a tour bus overturned in delaware. police say a bus went off the ramp and went down an embankment. people who saw the crash rushed over to pull the passengers out before first responders arrived. one woman was trapped underneath the bus and died at the scene. another woman died at the hospital. the passengers were una sightseeing tour and traveling from washington, d.c. to new york. a chp helicopter had to be called in to rescue a man near mount caca. he was riding an atv in steep terrain when he crashed and killed. they had to use off road vehicles to reach the man. the chp hill top -- helicopter was called in to get him out. and san francisco firefighters rescued a person and a dog trapped on a cliff.

that happened near fort funston yesterday evening. the dog went over the edge and the owner got stuck trying to rescue the dog. no injuries are reported. time is 6:23. it has been nearly a month since the napa earthquake. many are still rebuilding their homes, cleaning up debris and helping their neighbors. mental health experts say it's important to pay attention to emotional health as well as rebuilding. >> they are cleaning their homes, they arely building and repairing and all that goes on. we forget about ourselves. we need to repair ourselves as well. >> in addition to the chair massages and one on one counseling, there were other forms of therapy that included

taking quake damage items like broken mugs and turning them into something useful again like a moe sayic. several buildings owned by napa county were fadly damaged. that has left the county scrambling. some of the work space it has found so far, warehouses, laboratories, and offices built back in the 1980s. officials say it will take time and money to get all of their staff into permanent locations again. nasa's maine spacecraft is getting down to business. controllers will spend the next six weeks adjusting its altitude. scientists believe it could provide clues as to how mars went from being wet and warm to dry and cold. >> so in essence that is our

if it's not, it's pushing the upper 50s. there is a lot of 60s. 64 foster ever city -- foster city. menlo park even los altos hill low 60s. once the fog burns off we will have lots of sunshine. a little breezy at times. very warm on the coast. 70s to 80s inland. 60s and 70s around the bay. here is sal. steve, good morning. we are looking at a commute that is a lot busier than it was. you can so how heavy it was here. it is going to be pretty busy in berkeley. also in richmond. 23 minutes is not too bad. that time keeps inching upwards. average speed is 50 miles an hour.

let's move along and take a look at the toll plaza where the traffic continues to be slow temperature it's about a 25 minute dry time getting into san francisco. i do want to mention highway 37 is open. it opened on saturday. a lot earlier than expected. 37 is open. already slow traffic on it. we've had a lot of slow traffic westbound. 58230. just a lot of slowing. ly put a drive time up here between grant line rode and 680 it's 42 minutes. tara moriarty is joining us live from the scene. >> police have cleared the scene. there was quite a bit of glass and debris in the roadways. one of the tires popped off the pickup truck involved this

crash as well. this accident happened shortly after 5:00 this morning. what is unique about this crash is it started on the freeway but ended on a frontage road right next to it. we're on california avenue. highway 4 westbound. when we arrived on scene first, the white pickup was on its roof. it flipped over after it crashed with an orange colored car on the freeway. the chp says the two hit each other during a lane change and the pickup went sailing over the highway barrier and on to this road. the chp says the driver of the pickup suffered some cuts to the fore head, minor injuries, he was taken to the hospital. he is described as a man in his 40s. the other driver walked away without a scratch. the crash did not block any freeway traffic. we're lye in pittsburgh i'm testimony -- we're live in pittburg i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news.

a bicycle is in critical condition. police say a car collided with a man in his 60s. ? i'm always telling people to keep an eye out. >> not all the cars stop. there is a lot of rolling stops. there is a lot of near misses. >> berkeley police say the driver involved in that crash yesterday did stop immediately and cooperating with investigators. right now it's still not clear if the driver will face charges. heavy smoke from the massive king fire burning in eldorado county canceled. >> air quality officials have remmed the -- recommended the event be canceled. >> the iron man lake tahoe was

called off just minutes before it was supposed to start. the concern unhealthy air for the 3,000 participants. athletes come from around the world to compete. they train for months. but despite being dis appointed, some say it's the right call. >> i think it is the right call. it is unfortunate learn sad. >> noon, 1:00 it was really bad. you couldn't see in front of you. >> others ignored the air quality warnings and decided to do the race course on their own. they between $800 to $1500 to enter that event. no word if they will get a refund. the king fire continues to grow. the fire has grown to nearly 88,000 acres. at least ten homes have been destroyed. changing weather conditions can fuel the fire even more. winds could pick up this week. more than 5,000 firefighters

including teams from the bay area are there to put the fire out. 12,000 homes are still threatened. proposal to add a third rain on the richmond san rafael bridge is moving forward. katie utehs is in san rafael right now. good morning, katie. >> reporter: the bridge is large enough to accommodate three lanes as it once did. the proposal would open up a lane. the additional lane of traffic would be used during peak evening travel according to the marin independent journal. the goal is to ease congestion on 101. no construction would be necessary to widen the bridge because it's already wide enough. instead the right shoulder would be utilized as a lane. the plan would require restriping or new signage. >> i think that would probably

be outstanding. a real good suggestion. as long as there is enough space for each lane. >> the bike lane is the more complicated of the proposal as it would require barricades to separate vehicles and cyclists. a study of the proposal is expected to be released early next year. $3million has been allocated for design services. coming up in our next report, we'll have more from some people about why their concerned about adding a bike lane. live in san rafael i'm katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police investigating a weekend burglary at the home of 49ers star ray mcdonald. sources tell ktvu news it happened late saturday night at the home on bentley ridge drive. police say at least one burglar broke into the vacant home, stole valuables. mostly electronics. ray mcdonald was in -- the 49ers have created a

controversy because they allowed ray mcdonald to continue to play despite his recent arrest on allegations of domestic violence three weeks ago. 49ers suffered another tough loss and another collapse on the second half of the game. they were dominant in the first half but that was followed by disaster in the last two quarters in phoenix yesterday. the 49ers lost to arizona 23- 14. the 49ers have been overwhelmed by a score of 52-3 in the second half. the loss yesterday dropped them to 1-2. they are two games behind the cardinals. as for the oakland raiders they are on their way to england after they lost to the patriots. the raiders are still without a win so far this season. and it was their 15th straight loss in the eastern time zone. oakland will now play the miami

dolphins in next weekend's special nfl game in london. we learning more about ray rice's appeal of his indefinite suspension from the nfl. he will argue that tmz edited the tape at the center of his domestic violence case. it shows rice punching his then fiance. his appeal all demand the ravens reinstate him and pay him his entire $3.5 million salary for the entire year. starting tonight part of the exit off the bay bridge will close for the next several months. talking about the folsom street exit ramp from westbound interstate 80 it will be closed to traffic from 11:00 tonight through the middle of march. the part of the exit that goes to fremont street will stay open. the workers will be repositioning the off ramp. it's part of a project to make the area more pedestrian friendly. it will also make more room for

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. the coast guard trying to figure out where fuel that spilled in the san francisco bay on saturday came from. less than 50 gallons of fuel spilled near the ss jeremiah o'brien which is docked at pier 45. that spill created a sheen on the water near the ship. crews surrounded the spill with more than 5,000 feet of boom. you can see it floating there. and used vacuum trucks and skimming vessels to clean up

that spill. police in brentwood are urging people not to give money to panhandlers. alex savidge is joining us now from brentwood with the reason police there say they are being nice for people that ask for money is a bad idea. >> pam, good morning to you. members of the police union believe that brentwood has developed a generous reputation and that is drawing homeless people to the city. that is why they are launching a campaign to curb panhandling. this all started when an officer came across a man that was asking for money outside of this bank of america. according to the facebook post, that man told the officer he talked with that day that he prefers to come brentwood because people here are nicer and give him more money. police say that man had $60 cash on will him. this man was a convicted felon and in its post it warned the

public that giving money to panhandlers will only encourage more criminals to come here. people we talk to this morning say this approach seems a bit extreme but they agree panhandling has become a big problem. >> i guess i'm guilty of giving out. but i have seen a rise in homeless in antioch and brentwood lately or the past couple of years there has been a big rise in it. so maybe that is what they need to do. >> reporter: that facebook post also urges people to call police if someone approaches them and asks them for money. the police union says instead of handing out money to people on the streets, they would like people to instead give to a charity. live in brentwood alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. time 16:44. it's now been more than a week since the university of virginia student hannah graham disappeared.

yesterday anen arrest want was issued for jesse matthew who police believe was the last person to see graham. the warrant is for an unrelated charge of reckless driving. while police believe matthew might have information, they don't have enough evidence to connect him to graham's disappearance. over the weekend volunteers kept searching for graham as her parents pleaded for anyone with information to come forward. >> we need to find out what happened to hannah. to make sure it doesn't happen to anybody else. >> graham was last seen saturday, september 13th leaving an off campus party. 6:45 is the time. time to check in with tori campbell for a look at what is coming up on mornings on 2. >> another sign the economy is bouncing back. six years ago there were 3,000 condos on the market in san francisco, today 350.

minute drive getting into san francisco with no major problems. and in san jose we are off to a decent start. let's go to steve. all right, thank you. we have a lot of low clouds in place. a very mild morning for many. a little bit warmer. and even more so. and then we draw our attention to the northwest. more clouds come in. cooler. probably will slow down. that is my -- i've seen this before. but the low clouds are there. temperatures are low. gave us lightning. and then rain up in the sierra yesterday. weak little system there or keeps an on shore breeze. 60s on the temps here.

63 in novato. 66 hayward. livermore is 63. concord is in there. higher elevations have cooled down. yet the lower elevations stuck in that low cloud deck. mid 60s gilroy. a little bit cooler. but not much. westerly at livermore. really mild ocean temps. bodega bay is crazy warm. we need up welling. right now they are really warm. monterey is 62. 40 up in tahoe. 55 ukiah. there are more 50s to the north. it will burn off a little sooner today. we will focus our attention on the developing system coming out of the gulf of alaska which will spread rain in here. low clouds forming over night into this morning.

a little breezy. remember a little breezy dave? slightly warmer today. rain possible if not wednesday night it's thursday morning. again this will slow down allyl bit. expect in northern california. there is the line wednesday night. and then swings this, falls apart on the southern end of it. the northern part should stay in that. means rain on thursday. this could be our first bona fide cold front. but signs are pointing toward a pattern change by wednesday and thursday. fog, sun, mild. 60s and 70s and temperatures well, they are near average to slightly below. especially inland. a little warmer on tuesday. and then we go more fog and a mild pattern. and cloud it up once that cold air gets here. it may take until thursday

afternoon or evening. that will send temperatures down. a little bump up in the temps on sunday. we are watching alibaba stock after its record debut on friday. the ipo ranks as the world east biggest in history. $25billion. the stock price jumped 38%. right now it's opening up at a little more than $91 a share. down a little bit from friday's close. a few minutes ago apple announced it sold more than $10 million iphone 6 and 6 plus models between last friday and sunday. that is a record for a new model in its opening weekend. it is an addition to the record $4 million phones that were preordered. apple ceo tim cook says demand has exfeeded the company's expectation. we are hearing from a bay area pilot he survived after his plane crashed. coming up in 25 minutes why tim
