more erratic winds are expected to make today a tough day for firefighters battling the raging king fire in el dorado county. the fire has already burned more than 87,000 acres and it's destroyed ten homes and 22 other buildings. right now, it is only 18% contained. good afternoon, i'm tori campbell. as brian hickey reports, today the focus is on the changing weather conditions and how the wind could help fuel the king fire, which is still threatening more than 12,000 homes. >> reporter: the second fire camp is up and running. it's to battle the north end of the king fire as crews head out for another day on the fire lines of a fire that's grown to more than 8 -- more thanle 7 -- more than 87,000 acres. crews set up this camp closer to where they need to go to work but also to spread the

here, laundry and shower facilities. everything they need to clean up, restock and head back out to the lines on the king fire. >> that was brian hickory reporting. let's check in with our own rosemary orozco monitoring the fire conditions around the king fire. >> yes, tori. we have warmer, drier air moving into the sierra for the next couple days. the winds will be up. when it's humid an damp, it burns slower and allows them to sort of get the upper hand on it. at this point, with the dry and hot air in place, it will burn faster and hotter. there is also a dense fog advisory until 8:00 this evening for the greater lake tahoe area. you can see it stretches from the north end all the way south and continues on into nevada and farther south of tahoe as well. the dense fog advisory meaning it's tough to drive through there. visibility near a mile in some areas, very hazardous along i- 80. we're talking highway 50 and 89

12:07 pm
they were mostly found in a yard in the playground area. no one knows exactly where they came from. but over the weekend, crews came in and fumigated and part of that fumigation process was focused on portable classrooms that sit on the yard. the principal says when she came in this morning, there were still some live fleas found on campus and on top of that, there was another problem, a water leak in a bathroom caused flooding. the main office and several classrooms had standing water. so that prompted the principal to send all of the students home for the day just after 8:00 this morning. while the flooding prompted the cancellation of process, the fleas are still a concern and one student had several bites. >> he was scratching, you know, just itchy. once we actually looked at him, he did have a bite or two. >> you could see some of them flying, not many. i think there was more on wednesday when i first discovered it. so i don't think that's a huge factor at this point.
12:08 pm
but it is influential. >> reporter: now, with the students gone today, maintenance crews will spend the afternoon cleaning up all of the standing water from that leak. they will fumigate on campus one more time to hopefully kill all of the remaining fleas. the principal is optimistic the kids will be able to return to class tomorrow morning. we're live in hayward. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. alameda county officials have cordoned off part of a street near hayward after reports of a national gas leak. it started after 10:00 outside the hayward city limits. about two blocks away from fairview elementary school where a spokeswoman told us the campus was not affected. this view from newschopper2 shows the activity. pg&e says it capped the leak around 11:18. to pay or not to pay. some san francisco parking meters are confusing drivers. parking on sunday has been free
